Students from the Atlanta C-3 Schools will be acting in a full length play this month, something that hasn’t been seen at AHS for several years. The play “Prom Night Goes Bad, is about four high school seniors that arrive at a country lodge for their prom. But, things go askew from the start. They show up at the wrong lodge, their car won’t start, the phone goes dead, and disco music plays inexplicably. The lodge is haunted! It all leads to a bizarre prom night no one will forget! The production will be Thursday, May 17th beginning at 7:00 p.m. with a meal served by the Booster Club before the presentation at 6:00 p.m. Cost for the dinner theatre will be $10.00 per ticket with dinner reservations being made by May 11th. Call the school at (660) 239-4211. Tickets for the production only are $5.00 per person.

me grow?” Food Power Adventure, a popular traveling exhibit, gives elementary students an inside look at how the body turns food into energy. Students start at the pizza farm to learn where farmers grow ingredients like wheat and tomatoes. At the food packaging and labeling area, students inspect labels on milk cartons for nutrition facts.

After a stop at the cafeteria to select healthy foods, students make their way into the digestive system so they can change their food into the power they test at the muscles and bones stations. “Food Power Adventure is the kind of active learning experience students need to help them see how the food they choose gives them the energy they need to play and grow,” said Sheri Turner, School Nurse with Adair Co R-II School. “In addition to being a fun way for kids to learn about nutrition, the school is also meeting its wellness policy goals and state education standards.” The MU Department of Nutritional Sciences created Food Power Adventure with partial funding from USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Blonde But Blunt

Gilbreath-McLorn House Hosts Afternoon Tea

BY BECKY JEFFCOAT EDITOR/PUBLISHER lpnews@marktwain.net

I’ve met some incredible people in my life, but one person has been an influence on me for about four years now, knowing me inside and out, front to back, side to side, poker face to poker face, she always has my back and is always there when I need her and sometimes to my demise, there when I don’t think I need her. But having those special people in our lives is what helps us keep going, makes us keep moving, they motivate us, cheer us on, tell us our weaknesses, call at that time when you think everyone has forgotten you and make us smile without even saying a word. My Best Friend is a person who works her rear off, at work and at home, takes care of others, like me and her family, figures out a way of getting things done when I believe there’s no time and the only trite I can see that she possibly needs to work on, is keeping the trash out of her truck. We have best friends to tell our troubles to, our secrets to, our defeats, our wins, our glory, share our happiness with and just count on, unconditionally!! I know everyone has one of these friends, but sorry to tell you, I have the BEST ONE!! Sometimes out of the blue, she texts with a simple suggestion, the weather, a Cardinal score

JEFFCOAT or even an unscheduled poker game. There are weeks that I don’t even talk to her for 3 or 4 days, but I know if I need her, well, she’s there. In a word or I guess two words, BEST FRIEND, means you are never alone, ever, no matter what. Call, no answer? Leave a message, they get back to you, sooner or later, sooner is always better, but people are busy, they rely on you to be there for them just as much as you rely on them to be there for you. In some cases, a best friend means a spouse, a parent, a child, a classmate or a neighbor, mine is none of the above, she’s just her, and that’s okay with me. I suggest if you don’t have one of these special people in your lives, you should get one, pronto!!!! Makes a world of difference. I want to wish every Mother, every female Best Friend, every Mother-ToBe and anyone who has adopted that little neighbor kid next door a VERY HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!! Keep It Kool, Bec

The Trustees of the Gilbreath-McLorn house hosted an afternoon tea for 19 local ladies of La Plata on Sunday, April 29th. Inspirational speaker Neal Matticks enlightened and encouraged community involvement for restoration and renewal of the significant historical locations in the La Plata area. Matticks presented a timeline of Missouri’s statehood, rural economics and the early development of La Plata. This set the stage to a better understanding of W. T. and Sarah Gilbreath’s lifestyle, financial status and the significance of the Victorian home they built in 1896. Matticks having grown up in La Plata conversed with Olive Gilbreath-McLorn in the 1970’s. He expounded on her education, international travel and her literary accomplishments. She had a deep interest in the Russian culture and wrote about her travel and experiences both in Russian and China in the early 1900’s. The Gilbreath-McLorn house, 225 North Owensby, offers private tours by appointment. We have an event calendar which is open for private meetings and club gatherings. The next public open house is scheduled for Sunday, May 27th , 1-3 pm.

In the gospel of John, the 15th chapter, Jesus talks about being the one true vine and we are the branches that grow out from that vine. This is a story word picture of our relationship with Jesus. We need Him so that we can do any real and lasting good in the world around us. Just like the nutrients flow from the true vine to all the branches of plants, so Jesus feeds us our spiritual nutrition so we can keep doing good for God. Jesus gives us goodness, kindness, wisdom, love. Jesus tells us that without Him we can do no good things. We do have a choice though. We can try and do some good without maintaining a connection to Jesus. We will get burned out without Jesus to rely on. We will soon run out of the energy to continue the work. We will fail in our attempts. We need faith in Jesus Christ to keep going. Without Jesus we cannot please or glorify God. Without Jesus we certainly cannot earn salvation from the evil in the world. Salvation only comes as a result of our faith in Jesus Christ

From The Mayor’s Desk by Charlie Thompson, Mayor, City of La Plata

PASTOR THOMAS as Lord and Savior. It is that faith in Jesus that makes it possible for us to continue in this life. Like any relationship we have, a good relationship with Jesus requires communication. We must talk to Him about what is going on in our lives, our hopes, our dreams, our cares, an our fears. We must also study the Word of God in the Bible. These are important so that we can be connected to Jesus and fed by Him for our daily needs. So is hanging out with others who are connected to Jesus. Stay connected to Him always. Denzil Thomas, pastor Atlanta, Mt. Zion, and La Plata United Methodist Churches

If any of you would like a few extra dollars, and sometimes a lot, here is a way. Iron and steel junk is bringing good money right now. There are many old automobiles parked and junked around town. What a good time to get rid of them and improve the looks and value of your property. There are people that will actually come out and get them, load them, and take them off and pay you a good percentage. Take advantage of this situation while it lasts. We get many complaints about how unsightly these old abandoned cars are, and justifiably so. Also, on the positive side, I had the opportunity to work at the District Track and Field events hosted by our school on Saturday. What a wonderful sight to see hundreds of youth competing and trying instead of out running

Good Luck Graduates! with a heavy heart. At that moment I didn’t care about my hair or my cap. I was scared. The building that once felt like a prison, felt like home. I was saying goodbye to my teachers but I promised I would take their wisdom with me. I no longer looked at my school as a prison. It felt more like my security blanket. What was to come of me now? I had a million thoughts racing through my mind. Finally diploma in hand and numb legs it was time to move my tassel. It was time to become an adult and think for myself. As I moved my tassel I looked at my family and their joyful tears. I was no longer scared but more excited. If I could only be as happy as they were, then I’d be okay. Good Luck to all area graduates and God Bless You now and in the future!

BY SHEENA BERRY ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE lpnews@marktwain.net

Graduation time is near. I sit back and watch all these young ladies and gentlemen flourish into men and women, I can not believe its been six years since I walked across that stage and stepped into adulthood. I proudly powdered my nose and made sure my cap was on just right. Everything “had” to look perfect for that “special moment”. The moment when I got to move my tassel to the other side and my momma would scream with joy. That moment when I could look at my parents and notice those prideful tears rolling down their cheeks, and they were for me, I did good! As I heard my name it was my time now. I stood and walked towards Seniors Grant Roberts, Weston Smith, Rachel Shahan and Danielle Boren on the first day of their senior year. These the stage shaky and students will be graduating this year.

Where Does The Time Go?

BY BECKY JEFFCOAT EDITOR/PUBLISHER lpnews@marktwain.net

Where do I start? There are children that I used to baby sit that I have watched grow upalong with their siblings, friends, etc. I may have even baby-sat for their parents because I’m friends with many of the children’s grandparents! Even for those I didn’t baby-sit, I am amazed at each and every teenager

as they turn the page from diploma to college and job applications. These kids have embraced the upbringing of a rural community, which not only means their parents, families, friends and parents of friends did their jobs correctly and well. Those neighbors who allowed kids to mow their grass for a few bucks, the guy at the grocery store who carried the groceries out to the car, or a favorite teacher who gave wisdom played a large influence

Congratulations

on these kids, and those memories will always remain with them. As a newspaper reporter and photographer for the local schools, I’ve seen it all- from scholars to athletes, over-achievers to drama queens and even some “don’t want to be here” students. Each child is a different example of our teachings and examples of the way we perceive life and the choices we make. We, as adults, can help enhance to young minds

and watch them mold into strong and energetic individuals. Sometimes we don’t always make the best choices, but we learn from our mistakes, thus, in return making the world a better place in our small corner of the world. I am very proud of all the seniors, but there are a few special seniors and parents that I would like to credit. Robert Smith, you and Lori have brought up two very handsome, polite, athletic and sweet boys.

They will both do well in life and thanks to your both. Your boys don’t realize just how lucky they are to have you in their lives. Congratulations Dalton! Rhonda Waddle, you’ve been a wonderful parent to your own four children, but Jake and Shelby Shelby are truly lucky. Marrying Bryan was a blessing for you, but those two children are fortunate to have found a loving mother and wife for their father. You really hit gold!

Good luck in the armed forces Jake, we are all very proud of you. I was blessed to watch you grow from a child to a young man. Congratulations Jake! Koni Hagar, well you finally did it! You got Hali through school and she is a beautiful young woman. She will go very far. I’m sure her goals are set high and she will achieve those with the support of you and the rest of your family. Congratulations Hali! Brad and Louise Smith, I don’t know Katie very well, but from what I’ve seen in the past few months of including Brashear into our newspaper, she’s a lovely young lady and your eyes shine every time you talk of her. Congratulations Katie! Doug and Paula Clarkson, Joe is a fun, smart, hard working and handsome young man. I consider myself luck to be family. He will find happiness in life and be close to his family forever. Congratulations Joe! Kelcey Smith, well, what can I say? You and Ralph have made a miracle. Weston is a great kid and has a lot going for him. He’ll be fine. Congratulations Weston! Congratulations to All Area Graduates! Aim High!

Missouri Scholarships and Grants

Senior year!!! What an exciting time – but, sometimes it can be confusing, too! On one hand you are cramming in a lot of social activity, and on the other hand you are filling out applications to college. It’s like you have one foot in the present, and the other in the future. There is one other thing you really need to consider for your future – a scholarship or grant to help with expenses. Every year there are thousands of unclaimed scholarships – and dollars – out there that no one ever gets, because no one ever applied for them. Don’t let that be you!!! Check out the opportunities we’ve listed below – but realize these are just a few of hundreds out there. Go by and see your guidance counselor for more. Have a great year – and a happy life!!! Note: Many of the scholarships listed below have financial need as a consideration, and, if so, you are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Last weekend was the last meeting of Conference Council on Youth Ministries (CCYM) with our graduating seniors. This meeting is always one of mixed feelings; sad to see them leave, thankful for all they have given to ministry in the Missouri Conference, and excited for what they will be doing in the years ahead. It is important to honor and celebrate with our seniors as they transition to a new phase in their life. Most churches will do something to recognize their graduation from giving of gifts, breakfast, dinners, roastings, parties, and the list goes on. Sometimes though the students and their families

and the church sees this as another check off. We got them out of high school and they are now gone. There is very little contact between the students and the church. They do not connect with a church in the area where they go to school/work. Or they are staying home to work/ school, but have few friends still around and even have little time between work and school to cultivate new friendships. The church no longer has a place for them. Oh, maybe during Christmas break they have a Sunday School class and a couple people show up. This past weekend at a college conference they were talking about how

scary the freshman year is. The church can be the one consistent place in their life. It is important for the home church to stay in contact. Have folks from the home church visit the college campuses, take the students for pizza, have the local church pastor, campus minister join in the pizza. Send the names and contact info to the campus ministers at the campus where students will attend. A contact list is on the web site. If there is no campus ministry, contact the local church in the community. If you have students staying at home attending junior college, partner with other churches in the area and develop a campus ministry group. There are

a few local churches that have begun to minister to college students in community colleges. When students graduate from high school, they do not graduate from the church. As we work together through our connectional church, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of students. We can continue to celebrate the ministry that they can offer. The greatest joy as a parent is to see your children grow into adulthood. The greatest joy as a church is to see our youth continue to be in ministry and make a difference in the world.

College Funding Tips For First Year Students

Finding ways to pay for college, especially if you’re a high school student looking forward to that first year on campus, isn’t easy. But there is a wealth of options out there for you if you do your research. A good strategy is to start looking at where you’re going to come up with college funding early, as deadlines will be important for you to pay attention to as you navigate the financial aid application process. Explore the resources available to you by filling out that financial aid application for FAFSA-based funding, looking to your intended college for college-based funding, investigating private loans and alternatives outside of federal student loans, and considering working through school if you can balance employment and college. Browse through our site to find college funding options that will fit your needs and help you pay for that degree. And don’t

forget the most desirable source of funding – college scholarships – that you won’t ever need to pay back. Conduct a free scholarship search on Scholarships.com to see awards that you’re eligible for that could help ease the stress of finding college funding. FAFSA-Based Funding The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, will be one of your first steps in determining where you’ll need to go next as far as supplementing your financial aid package. Most federal aid programs will require it, and most colleges won’t consider recommending financial aid opportunities to you without it. Applications are available starting January 1st of each year, and are available online for faster processing. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) back that will show you the FAF-

SA-based funding you’re eligible for. The college funding determined by the FAFSA will include Federal Pell Grants and other need-based grants, Federal Stafford Loans, the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students, or PLUS Loans, and campus-based aid such as Federal WorkStudy opportunities and the Federal Perkins Loan program. College-Based Funding College-based funding will more often than not also be determined by what you fill out on your FAFSA. Work study programs (where the paycheck you make at an oncampus job goes directly toward your tuition and fees), the Federal Perkins Loan program and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant fall into the campus-based aid funding category as they are distributed directly by the college. Colleges will require more information

Missouri Department Of Higher Education College Search Tips In these tough economic times, many families may need additional money to help pay for college. Federal and state financial aid programs may not be enough. Seeking and applying for private scholarships from non-profit foundations and other organizations may provide the extra help needed. Here are some suggestions about how to find legitimate scholarships. “Like” the MDHE’s Facebook page, Journey to College, and visit its scholarship section often. The MDHE is often notified when new private scholarships are available or when a scholarships’ application period opens, and this information is added immediately to Journey to College. Follow the MDHE’s tweets via Twitter, and have these communications sent to your cell phone. The MDHE communicates scholarship information as well as other resources for students and their families. Ask businesses, community groups,

schools, and religious and civic organizations in your local community or state about scholarship opportunities. Check your local library for scholarship books. Keep looking! The more you search, the greater your chances of finding additional programs. Keep the following tips in mind when using the Internet or a scholarship search organization: Be cautious of scholarship scams. Contact the Federal Trade Commission for more information. Do not provide credit card information to use a free scholarship search. Read the fine print carefully. Many online financial assistance search services request information about you so they can find financial assistance programs for which you may be eligible. Some of these companies may send you information about other services that they provide or sell your information to another company.

about you and your parents’ finances than federal programs, meaning the difference in funding from your college and the government could be substantial. Still, your intended college will also be a good source for scholarships and grants available only on that campus, especially if you have a stellar academic record or other abilities and characteristics desirable to the college. Put some thought into the kind of program you’d like to pursue, as many colleges will offer awards based on your field of study. Try out a free college search to see what your intended college offers, and the kinds of scholarships and grants awarded there. Private Loans and Alternatives For students who have exhausted other sources of college funding, private loans may be the answer. While they once were scarce, private loans have become increasing-

ly common over the last two decades, and despite problems lenders faced during the latter part of the 2000’s, they are likely here to stay. Traditional bank-based private student loans are the most common option, but they are not the only one available. Credit unions also offer student loans, often at very competitive interest rates. State higher education agencies, as well as some philanthropic organizations may also offer student loans to certain groups of students. Finally, new student lending alternatives are emerging constantly, including web-based services that match students with private individuals interested in helping fund their college educations. Employment and College Like private loans, the role employment plays in college funding has shifted over the years. While it used to be common for students to work their

Despite this shift, however, employment still plays an important role in college funding. College employment can still help minimize your student loan debt by helping cover your living expenses. Financial Aid Myth-Busting

“Only students with a high Grade Point Average get financial aid.” This is a common misconception. While it certainly can’t hurt to earn high marks in school, falling short of an A+ average does not mean you will wind up washing dishes 60 hours a week to pay your way through college. In fact, most federal student aid programs don’t even consider a student’s grades, provided he or she maintains a reasonable grade in their program of study. This doesn’t imply that you should start shooting for D’s—by all means aim for the stars, but don’t feel as though you have to be a child prodigy to receive financial assistance for college. “Applying for financial aid is time consuming.” Not so, in fact, it is probably one of the easiest ways that you are likely to ever encounter to receive free funding. If you are in need of financial aid, it is worth it. The process seems tedious; however,

it doesn’t actually require much of you. Let’s be pragmatic for a moment— how long would it take you to save $20 thousand dollars on your own? Certainly far longer than the few months it takes to obtain thousands of dollars in financial aid. “There isn’t much aid out there, anyway.” On the contrary, student financial aid in 2005-2006 rose to over $130 billion. Though not everybody will receive a federal grant, the kind of aid you never have to repay, there are plenty of low-interest student loans offered by the government. Other types of aid, like scholarships, are offered by all sorts of different organizations and most colleges provide some sort of financial aid package. Contact all of the colleges you may be considering attending and ask what type of financial aid you can expect to receive based on your personal situation. This could be a deciding factor when it comes time

Congrats Grads!! Good Luck!!

to choose a school. “Financial Aid is only awarded to minorities.” While there certainly are some scholarships available exclusively to minorities, the money from federal student aid programs is not disseminated in this way. Funds are awarded based on financial need, not race, ethnicity, or gender. When you fill out your FAFSA, you will notice that information about your ethnicity is not even required of you. Everyone has the opportunity to receive financial aid. “Billions in scholarship money goes unused each year.” This all too common misconception is perpetuated largely by certain fee-based professionalscholarship search services. This is their way of trying to entice students into giving them money for something that can be found elsewhere for free. You’re not likely read this fallacy on any free website or publication. While

there is plenty of financial aid out there, these folks would like you to believe there is a surplus of scholarship funds and only they have the information that can help you get it. Don’t forget to visit www.scholarships.com to conduct a free scholarship search and to get more free financial aid information. “Financial aid is only for exceptionally needy students.” Unless you fill out your FAFSA form, you will never know if and how much aid you actually qualify for. Thousands of students are awarded aid every year; it is possible to receive financial aid if you are in need but not necessarily needy. Financial aid comes in many forms, and the truth is that even a small award helps. Don’t sell your self short of receiving aid from the government, submit your FAFSA as soon as possible. “It’s only financial aid if it’s free.”
