LOCH HAVEN RESIDENTS ATTEND MEMORY DAY

Blonde But Blunt BY BECKY JEFFCOAT EDITOR/PUBLISHER lpnews@marktwain.net

Oh my goodness, last week was a very busy week. Work here, work there, meetings, doctor’s appointments, treadmill walking and I began my new class on Thursday night. I’ve decided that one can never be too smart. LOL Even though I already know everything I think my brain is big enough for just a few more things. Which leads me to a joke I heard last week… A lawyer and a blonde were sitting next to each other on the long flight from Kirksville to Vegas. The lawyer leans over to her and asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde just wants to sleep so she politely declines and faces the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is really easy and a lot of fun. He explains “I’ll ask you a question and if you don’t know the answer you pay me $5 and vice versa.” Again she politely declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now somewhat agitated says, “Okay, if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5 and if I don’t know the answer I will pay you $500.” This catches the blonde’s attention and figuring that there will be no end to the torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question, “What’s the distance from the earth to the moon?”

JEFFCOAT The blonde does not say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5 bill and hands it to the lawyer. Now it’s her turn. She asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?” The lawyer throws her a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all references. Frustrated, he emails all his friends and coworkers, nobody has any help. After three hours, while the plane is getting ready to land, he wakes the blonde and hands her the $500. The blonde thanks him and puts it in her purse. The lawyer, who is more than miffed, says “OK” and asks, “Well, so what’s the answer?” Without a word she reaches into her purse again and hands him $5. My point of this joke, ALL Blondes are not DUMB!! LOL Enjoy your week, weather is great! P.S. Still no baby, Quinci Jo is as stubborn as her mama. Keep It Kool, Bec

COMMENT

From The Mayor’s Desk by Charlie Thompson, Mayor, City of La Plata The Mayor and City Hall have received numerous calls concerning the publishing last week of a new ordinance that hadn’t been passed yet by the City Council. Not sure how that came about. Anyway, the ordinance now has been passed by the City Council and signed into law by the Mayor. It does not change any rules or regulations for normal riding of ATV’s, motorized vehicles, bicycles, etc., within the city limits. This ordinance was created to help solve a problem at the new reservoir. Apparently a lot of ATV riding has been occurring within the lake property and on the dam causing a lot of damage. This was discovered while inspecting the CRP land at the lake. ATV trails were clearly being established on both the North and South sides of the lake. Climbing trails were made on the sides of the dam. This is causing problems with

MAYOR THOMPSON soil compaction (lowering of height of dam), vegetation loss, rutting, erosion, etc. The City has been forced to erect new fencing and gates on the lake property to try and halt this problem. Go ahead and ride your ATV’s and other motorized vehicles in the City. However, do it legally. One word of caution! If you carry passengers of any age on vehicles that weren’t designed for that purpose, you or your kids will be ticketed by the police. This is a life threatening situation and these vehicles are not toys. In the meantime, have a great summer.

FAITH

Pastor’s Corner Who is your leader? Do you follow just anyone who volunteers? Does it make any difference? Yes. It does make difference who you allow to be your leader. Some people are better leaders than others. Some want to be your leader just because they want the power and the money that sometimes comes with being leader. Some want to be your leader just because it seems fun when they watch someone else lead. Some want to be your leader just to be in control of someone or something. Some, a few, want to be your leader because they truly want to help others. I don’t know who you’re leader is but I know someone who wants to be your leader. I know of several who want to be, but I really know one who wants to be your leader and I know him well. As you might expect from me, that person’s name is Jesus. What qualifies Jesus to be your leader? For starters, he is the only Son of the God who created you and all that is on the earth and God, his Father, he even created the earth. Jesus was there with him when

~ PASTOR THOMAS God created it all. Jesus also lived for a time on this earth. He didn’t come as a hero on a white horse or even a hero with a shiny car. Jesus came as an ordinary baby boy. Jesus grew up and was obedient to the Jewish religious laws. He lived as one who had nothing, no possessions, no riches. He knew the hurt that comes from rejection. He knew the pain from hunger. He knew everything we go through in this life. He even knew death and he beat death and was raised again by his Father. Jesus is a leader who knows where you have been and where you need to go. COMMUNITY NEWS

City of La Plata Municipal Election Candidate Public Forum Answers The Home Press recently contacted each candidate running for the office of the City of La Plata that had opposition. Candidates were Mayor - Charlie Thompson and Dustin Sawyer; Alderman Ward I - Charles Allen and Sean Herron. Questionnaires were to be returned to this office by Friday March 9th. Those returning their questionnaires are printed below with their picture.

Mayor Candidates

Alderman Ward I Candidates

Number of years you have been a La Plata resident: 11 years and a lifetime in the area.

Number of years you have been a La Plata resident: 40 years.

What do you feel will be your highest priority in the position which are seeking if you are successful at the April 3rd election? Maintain current or comparable services despite a declining tax revenue problem and improve streets with equipment that has been purchased to work with.

What do you feel will be your highest priority in the position which are seeking if you are successful at the April 3rd election? Our city streets need some attention, so I would think this would be one of my priorities.

Is there currently a situation that you oppose in our in the city and/or administration? No

Is there currently a situation that you oppose in our in the city and/or administration? I don’t currently oppose any situations with current administration or alderman.

Charles Thompson Incumbent

What is your reason for filing for the Mayor of La Plata and what do you feel qualifies you for that position? On the job experience with 2 years as Mayor and 2 years as Municipal Judge and a lifetime of business and sales experience along with 43 years of officiating experience for qualifications. Reason for filing - To continue promoting a good environment for citizens and employees of City of La Plata. I am a good listener. I may not agree with you or you may not agree with me, but honesty and trust from the Mayor’s office will always be a goal. My word is good and I’m not a ‘waffler’. Recognize the fact that when a small town Mayor makes a decision it usually effects local citizens immediately and directly, more so likely than any other level of public service or office. What initiatives would you like to see La Plata pursue and why? Apply for more grants, etc., while realizing that there isn’t nearly as much out there as there used to be. More help and proficiency from the park board, particularly as it effects the Santa Fe Lake, which I feel has been neglected for too long. The dam at the lake is a major problem. The dam at the new lake also has problems. Cannot be neglected any longer and not expect major rouble. Install more conveniences in city square park such as barbecue stands, permanent benches, etc.

Sean Herron Candidate

it is my time to step up and serve our community. What initiatives would you like to see La Plata pursue and why? I want to keep this a rural community and help keep the checkbook balanced. Do you feel the city departments, such as electrical, water, street, administrative, ect. are doing a good job? What are your feelings of each department and what do you feel needs to be changed? There is a great group of people working for the city. I feel it is important to listen to their needs and opinions and to work together to make this a great town. Please offer any other comments/concerns that you feel are important and should be addressed as a an alderman? It is important to listen to the community and do what is best for the community as a whole. Number of years you have been a La Plata resident: I was raised in Kirksville, Missouri from 1946 to 1980. I moved back to the area and settled in La Plata in 2007 after my working career because of lifestyle and friendly atmosphere of the community. I have been involved in civic affairs since moving to La Plata.

Do you feel the city departments, such as electrical, water, street, administrative, etc. are doing a good job? What are your feelings of each department and what do you feel needs to be changed? There is always room for improvement. Overall they do a good job. Time clocks have just been installed. Weekly and daily work plans are required from each department among other changes. Please offer any other comments/concerns that you feel are important and should be addressed as Mayor? There are some services that are putting a strain on city finances. Hopefully a way can be found to diminish these losses, but no guarantees are out there. Also, new electrical generators now provide a badly needed power backup source for emergencies that previously has not been available. A lot of improvements have been made to city hall building, but a new site and building may be needed in the not too distant future.

What is your reason for filing for the Alderman of La Plata and what do you feel qualifies you for that position? I feel

Charles Allen Incumbent

What do you feel will be your highest priority in the position which are seeking if you are successful at the April 3rd election? The city infrastructure, especially street repair. We recently acquired equipment to begin the street improvement by fixing pot holes and then the chip and seal of the city streets. An important part will be prioritizing the order of the street repair.

Is there currently a situation that you oppose in our in the city and/or administration? Not within the city itself and not with the new administration. I do not like the fact that our taxpayers in the city have their tax dollars going to the Macon County special road district and getting nothing for their money. Voters can fix this in the April election. The issue is on the ballot to either continue this contribution or reject it. If you have questions, please contact me.

Number of years you have been a La Plata resident: Lifelong resident. What do you feel will be your highest priority in the position which are seeking if you are successful at the April 3rd election? I would have to say my highest priority if elected is to listen to the citizens of La Plata, hear their concerns, answer their questions, and provide solutions to our citizens.

Dustin Sawyer Candidate

Is there currently a situation that you oppose in our in the city and/or administration? Our Cities population has dropped to 1366 from 1482. That is 120 residents that have moved. I’m opposed to La Plata turning into South Gifford, and for that not to happen it’s going to take young blood in our city government.

Things have to change, and change for the good. I understand that things can’t change over night, or to quick as most people don’t like change. But it needs to happen, the only way to do this is to get our younger citizens involved with city government to help make it grow and succeed as a City. What is your reason for filing for the Mayor of La Plata and what do you feel qualifies you for that position? I have volunteered for this city since I could ride a bike, from the Fire Dept., EMS, Park Board, to the La Plata Promotional Committees current President. I feel that being Mayor of La Plata, I can point the City in the correct direction. What initiatives would you like to see La Plata pursue and why? Our utility deposits are crazy – $361.00 for a residence and $468.00 for a business. I think I’m starting to realize why our population is going down. No business, no residence easy concept. So I will do my best to get these deposits lowered so a single family can move to La Plata, and a new small business can OPEN. I understand that people leave without paying bills, but that’s why we have a judicial system. Do you feel the city departments, such as electrical, water, street, administrative, etc. are doing a good job? What are your feelings of each department and what do you feel needs to be changed? I think the departments do a great job for what they have to work with. Please offer any other comments/concerns that you feel are important and should be addressed as Mayor? There are always questions or concerns from citizens. As Mayor I will have an open door policy. Anyone can call me day or night, even holidays. I promise I will listen, I will answer your questions and take action to your concerns. If any citizen has questions for me they can call me anytime 660-341-8659.

What is your reason for filing for the Alderman of La Plata and what do you feel qualifies you for that position? The citizens deserve an Alderman to represent them who has their interests and the welfare of the city in mind. I also have a sincere desire to serve this community. I served on the Park and Recreation Board for two years and as an Alderman of Ward I since April 2010. I believe my background, experience, education and dedication to those principles continue to be my qualifications. What initiatives would you like to see La Plata pursue and why? Depending on the road district outcome, I would encourage the taxpayers to authorize the taxes that went to the road district be allocated to the city Capitol Improvement account and be partly used to accelerate street repairs. The same taxes currently paid would be used in the city. Do you feel the city departments, such as electrical, water, street, administrative, ect. are doing a good job? What are your feelings of each department and what do you feel needs to be changed? I feel we have good employees in all of the city departments and am confident in their abilities. As a breakdown of each department, I see the following as priority items: Electrical - Get the new generators on line so we can get the electrical credits that will pay for the generators and be able to provide power to the city when emergencies or contingences arise. Water - As time permits we need to re-certify older residential meters to validate water and sewer usage. Street - As the weather permits, use the new equipment to start the street repairs with the current funds available. Police - My biggest concern is after hours response time when needed. Administration - No concerns. The new city administrator is working hard to learn the city policies and is doing a great job. Please offer any other comments/concerns that you feel are important and should be addressed as a an alderman? The importance of information. While voters need to be informed, it is even more important for your Alderman to be informed on issues. This means to research the background of an issue and evaluate possible solutions to best serve the citizens. That has been my practice and goal as your Alderman the past two years and will continue to be my goal if re-elected on April 3rd.
