THE AWARD WINNING OFFICIAL LEGAL NEWSPAPER OF JUNEAU COUNTY

Pastor will serve Life in prison

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2013

$1.00

BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD A former Necedah area pastor and resident of Tomah will be spending the rest of his life in the Wisconsin prison system. Michael Delaney, 66, was sentenced last week in Monroe County Court on convictions of sexual assault with a child under 16 years of age as a persistent repeater and five counts of child enticement. Delaney was convicted of the crimes in October by a jury of his peers. The life sentence was a mandatory sentence imposed on Delaney for the sexual assault as he has prior sexual assault convictions. The prior convictions came in 1982 when he served prison time for two counts of sexual abuse of a child in Arizona. The life sentence handed down last week came with an exclamation point of 50 additional years as he also received 10 years for each of the 5 counts of child enticement which are to be served consecutive to one another. During the sentencing hearing Judge Todd Ziegler did not mince his words as he handed down his decision when he stated that even if the sentence wasn't mandatory the court would still impose it. "There isn't really anything more serious than this other than homicide," he said. The serious crime occurred in 2008 when Delaney assaulted a 13 year old male victim. According to the original criminal complaint, the crimes happened over a period of time and involved using his position of power including teachings of faith to manipulate the victim while assaulting him. The young victim came forward with his story in 2011 and early in 2012 Delaney was charged. Those charges came within a few short months from Delaney retiring as Pastor from the Church of God of Prophecy in Necedah. The male victim, who is currently in the military, was not present for the sentencing hearing, however he did submit a written victim's impact statement that was read aloud during the court proceeding. In it he stated that he came forward and testified at trial to protect other victims. When The Messenger originally broke the story, early in 2012 on Delaney being held on possible charges of child sexual assault, we placed calls, and left messages at the Church of the God of Prophecy headquarters in Tennessee to ascertain whether or not they were aware of Delaney's prior criminal record in Arizona and if they had that information prior to him becoming a pastor in Necedah. Our calls and inquiries went unanswered.

More on the Transmission Line Last Wednesday afternoon Juneau County area residents involved with the advocacy group SOUL of Wisconsin met with state Rep. Ed Brooks at the Hatch Public Library in Mauston. The purpose of the meeting was to request that Brooks sign on to a letter written by SOUL to the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC) requesting a study and alternative to the high voltage power transmission line being proposed to run from La Crosse to Madison. Leading the meeting with Brooks was Mauston resident

Jane Powers who expressed to Brooks that the group has gathered the signatures of 80 plus area residents supporting their request to the PSC. Included in the letter Brooks’ constituents were looking for a signature on, they wrote: "My constituents are among Wisconsin residents who want the PSC to carefully study all options before committing their money to pay for such a huge and potentially avoidable expenditure. See LINE, on page 2

December 19, 2013

LINE, from page 1 As the rate of increase in energy use has declined to nearly flat and Wisconsin already has a robust enough electrical grid to supply the state's needs, my constituents question whether proposed lines are for instate energy reliability. They do not want to pay for lines that would pass through our state without providing them commensurate benefit. And if in-state reliability concerns indeed exist, they know that many Wisconsin residents and businesses are investing in energy efficiency measures, which would make the proposed lines even less necessary." Rep. Brooks expressed to the group meeting with him that he would send a letter to the PSC on their behalf but he would draft it himself and include that should the PSC move forward with the lines, that he would suggest they look to the route following the interstate rather than cutting through the rural landscape. Brooks insisted that a "plan B" needed to be addressed should the PSC approve the lines. Powers vehemently disagreed with offering up a route to look towards, stating that first a needs study needed to be completed before discussing routes. Others in the audience were also opposed to the suggestion from Rep. Brooks. One man stated that when the lines were first proposed by ATC the company held public meetings where they asked residents to pick one route over another rather than listening any opposition of the lines in general.

"That's what they want, they don't want to hear we don't want any lines, " he said. Powers went on to state that the group would like to see the letter Rep. Brooks would be sending before it was sent. The following day Rep. Brooks issued a press release speaking of the meeting he had with the group of citizens and including with it a letter he wrote to the PSC. In the press release on the meeting it stated: “I thought we had a good dialogue,” said Rep. Brooks. “I’ve conducted almost thirty listening sessions this year, and people have brought up this issue at many of those sessions. It’s an emotionally charged issue, and the PSC has a responsibility to consider all the facts before making a decision that could affect so many of my constituents.” Rep. Brooks has since sent a letter to the PSC highlighting the need for demonstrable proof that increased energy access is necessary, as well as for an exploration of alternatives to high voltage transmission lines. “I wrote this letter to reiterate the concerns that I have heard from folks in the 50th district, and to point out some of my own. I think that there is a feeling in the community that the PSC has not heard the voice of the public in these proceedings, and I cannot allow that to be the case.” In his letter to the PSC he supported some of the concerns voiced at last Wednesday's meeting by

writing: "Over the past year, I have conducted nearly thirty listening sessions in my district. The ATC proposal has been a topic of discussion at a majority of these gatherings. People want there to be a demonstrable need for increased energy access before any projects are approved. Currently, the proposed ATC route will disrupt the lives of many of my constituents, and they want to know that their lives are not being interfered with casually. Impartially conducted scientific studies should be produced to demonstrate the rationale for taking action." However, according to Powers, she was disappointed that he did not listen to their other concern about suggesting a route. In the letter Rep. Brooks went on to write: "Should the PSC determine that these lines are a necessity, I believe the majority of my constituents prefer the northern route that follows the interstate (Alternative Route P-East). This route would disrupt the least amount of farm land and would follow the PSC’s policy of utilizing existing corridors." After reviewing the press release and letter issued by Rep Brooks Powers stated the following in an email to the Messenger on her response to his statements: "We are glad Mr. Brooks wrote a letter but disappointed it was filled with Nimbyisms and said that the majority of his constituents prefer the Northern Route.

A heated discussion concerning the high transmission power line ensued at a recent meeting. There was not one single word uttered at the meeting about route preference nor a nimby sentence from anyone in the room - 87 people signed papers asking for an impartial cost/benefit study, and not one said anything about a route preference. The process considering certificate-of-need should indeed be about need. While Mr. Brooks' letter touches on relevant issues, the comment about routing is premature and not helpful. It appears no matter what happens, Mr. Brooks wants to be on the winning side of the fence. We are indeed grateful his letter to the PSC said "I insist that alternative options to high voltage transmission line be carefully considered."

Parent addresses Mauston School Board on Lice policy BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD A parent that has children who attend Westside Elementary School, Isaiah Pesce, addressed the Mauston School Board during the public participation portion of their monthly meeting on Monday. Pesce issued a concern regarding the district's policy concerning students with head lice in that they no longer send them home when it is discovered. He stated that twice in October his children came home infested, the first time being at the beginning of the month and then the second time near the end of the month. Both times he stated it cost his family time off from work and hundreds of dollars spent in ridding the children and their home of the lice. Pesce stated that he never received a letter notifying parents of the lice issue within the school until after the second time his children were infested. However, according to Pesce, when he went to the pharmacy to get the needed supplies an

employee there did inform him that a problem was "rampant" in the school. Pesce suggested that the board re-examine their policies regarding lice in the schools. It is the board's procedure not to respond to statements made during the public participation portion of their meetings. The issue Pesce brought to the board is one that is being shared and discussed in many school districts across the country. The "no nit" policies where children were sent home when it was discovered they were infested, has changed to a new approach as to not single out children. Experts claim that once lice is detected in a child at school others have already been exposed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 6 million to 12 million U.S. children between the ages of 3 and 11 are infested each year by lice, which do not carry disease. The CDC states the head louse is a parasitic insect that can be found on the head, eyebrows, and eyelashes of people. Head lice feed on

human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp. Head lice are not known to spread disease. Head lice move by crawling; they cannot hop or fly. Head lice are spread by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Anyone who comes in headto-head contact with someone who already has head lice is at greatest risk. Spread by contact with clothing (such as hats, scarves, coats) or other personal items (such as combs, brushes, or towels) used by an infested person is uncommon. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice. According to recent reports CDC officials support more lenient polices of the American Academy of Pediatrics, who in a 2010 report said, "No healthy child should be excluded from or allowed to miss school time because of head lice," adding that "no-nit" policies keeping students out of school "should be abandoned." Reports also state that parents across the country are issuing much of the same

New lice policies had one parent with facts addressing the school board on Monday night. concerns, Pesce stated at Monday's meeting. At the very least Pesce said he felt parents needed to be notified of infestations in schools,

and those notices should happen once a situation is known. "Getting rid of lice twice cost us, in total, over $300 -

that's expensive. The cost is especially hard on families in a high poverty county like ours." he said.

MAUSTON HIGH SCHOOL HAS STATE CHAMPION EQUESTRIAN TEAM

WESTSIDE ELEMENTARY TAKES THE STAGE

Last Friday afternoon parents, grandparents, and friends of Westside Elementary filled the auditorium at Mauston High School for a Holiday Program. By the time the young performers took the stage, parking was a commodity as were the seats in the auditorium. Students wore tie-dyed shirts that were made with the assistance of art teacher Leah Spindler. While all in a unique attire there was a common theme of community as they faced their auditorium. First to take the stage were the kindergarten classes who performed "I'm a Little Snowflake", "Must be Santa", Jingle Bells", and "I Want to be an Elf." The first graders performed next with "Celebrate with Joy," "In the Snow," "Rockin' Jingle Bells," and "Frosty the Snowman." The second graders performed "Hurry, Hurry Christmas Day," "A Silly Holiday Song," and "There's someone in the Chimney." Instrumental performers were Braison Tait, Hannah Rattnude, Peyton Hansen and Morgan Firlus.

The girls told the board members that riding horses has been something each has done for as long as they could remember. Winning was not something they expected, especially since this is the first year of an equestrian team at Mauston. "Alexis was the one who really wanted a team and helped to get it started," stated Michaela. Their coach went on to express that former Mauston High School vice principal Doug Kryder was instrumental in getting the team off the ground, "Mr. Kryder really got it all going. It was him who got us where we are now." EVA MARIE WOYWOD PHOTO

Ambulance association debuts new facility BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD Last Thursday evening the Mauston Area Ambulance Association held an celebratory open house at their new facility on Union St. in Mauston. The 8800 square foot facility offers current volunteers on the force a place to call their own as well as a chance to grow the association and their team. Members of the association gave guided tours to those who came out for the event. The tour began in the administrative section of the building where offices now await workers needing to write reports, or schedule the volunteers.

A large room with a screen provides an ample space for in house training. The room will be open for public use when the schedule allows for it. The building houses five rooms with beds for those needing to spend the overnight hours there while they await a call and a dining area comes complete with a full kitchen. With bays for five trucks the garage area has plenty of room for the association's current EMS vehicles. Those running out on a call will easily find their equipment and gear waiting for them in a dressing area. The new facility has been a long time in the making with

many discussions held over countless years regarding where and how it would be built. The price tag for the facility came in the neighborhood of $1 million, however the return on the investment according to many means a quicker response time. The Mauston Area Ambulance Association is a private non profit organization. Prior to the new facility opening they housed their vehicles, per an agreement, at the Mauston Fire Department's garage.

Elroy’s First Annual Parade of Homes PARADE OF HOMES STOP Located at Dolly’s Pedalers Rest on Hwy 71 right outside of Kendall, a beautiful tree decorated with past postcards sent to the home, which used to be Dolly Pesik’s farmhouse. Owners William and Mary Jo Hill opened the home for many to see on the Parade of Homes Christmas Walk. The Hill’s originally purchased the Pesik home, which includes 60 acres, around Dolly’s home, when they were first married. The Hill’s jumped at the opportunity almost 30 years later to add her acres and put the farm back together. Dolly had lived in the house since she turned 91 years old and is currently in an apartment in Kendall. She remembers when trains flew by the house and rattled everything. When asked why they built so close to the trail the answer was, “the house was built in 1856 way before me and the trains”. When removing some plaster in the “blue bed room” upstairs, a newspaper was found in between the walls with scenes from 1856 of Milwaukee. The house now serves as a place for bikers along the trail or others that need to get away and have a place to stay.

NICE REMODEL The home of David and Jennifer Gruen on Glendale

Road was recently remodeled about two years ago and has quite the amazing view for a backyard. The home was built about 20 years ago and now houses two extra bedrooms upstairs for their three girls with the remodel. The tree, fireplace, and open kitchen area with plenty of lights gave others going through the home a great Christmas feel.

CHRISTMAS SONGS Carolers greeted people at the entrance of the home of Darcy Uppena on County Hwy P. The carolers sang many Christmas favorites as others walked through the home and enjoyed delicious Christmas cookies and hot apple cider. Before entering the home, people were also greeted by the family’s two pet dogs.

GIVING TREE

CHRISTMAS FOR KIDS The Royal Bank has had a long standing tradition of helping kids in the community to have a better Christmas. This year as Shirley Schweiger was putting up the tree that would be the backdrop for many donations, a problem occurred with the tree stand. “You can’t just go out and buy a new tree stand for an artificial tree we found out. So eventually we needed to get a new tree to accommodate all the ornaments and donations,” she said. The older tree will be donated to the Boorman House in Mauston in hopes that they have an older tree stand that will hold it. The gifts that so many generous people donated will be passed out to children in the Elroy community who are in need.

JONES HOME The home of Mike and Jeannie Jones on Monitor Road drew a lot of attention on the tour. The home, now 100 years old, has recently been remodeled with the enclosed porch to be completed soon. When asked how long the updates took the couple to complete, “only a year” was the answer as the hardwood floors shined throughout the entire home and hardwood banisters were decorated with lights and garland. The couple even greeted tour enthusiasts with their Mr. and Mrs. Claus outfits.

The Farmers State Bank in Kendall has followed their annual tradition of having a giving tree for those in the community. Just pick a mitten off the tree and make someone have a brighter Christmas. The gifts are given out to children in need of a brighter Christmas and chosen by name submissions over several months.

Santa arrives by Sleigh BY TASHA MUELLER A few people may have had to take a double look around when seeing Santa located on a horse drawn sleigh Sunday afternoon. Even though it wasn’t his reindeer getting him to town, a couple of beautiful white horses did the trick. Owners Ron and Virginia Mundt of Horseshoe Valley Percherons of Spring Green offered rides on the sleigh

throughout the afternoon as Santa visited with all of the children. Something new for the Hillsboro Lions Club, which hosts the Santa visit, included having the event take place at the Hillsboro Fireman’s Community Center and in the afternoon, rather than the morning and at the North Pole location, located centrally downtown.

Members noted that the Community Center offered more space for the families and cookies, milk and hot chocolate were available. Santa also gave children a stuffed animal of their choice from a tree that was plumb full. Overall, a great turnout of children came by to tell Santa what exactly was on their Christmas wish list.

Dilana (right) and Devon Thayer enjoyed seeing Santa as it was Devon’s first time for the visit and Dilana told Santa was exactly was on her list.

Valerie Miller smiles for a picture after telling Santa what she would like. TASHA MUELLER PHOTO

Elementary students collect food for Plus 1 and Lions Stocking Fund CONTRIBUTED Hillsboro third graders Noah Burmaster, Billy Stekel and Ryan Biermeier recently read a book in class titled “Canstruction.” The book included the ideas for building sculptures out of cans of food and the three students decided that they wanted to have their own contest. Each of the boys are part of the after school program “Plus 1” which provides children an after school experience to become more involved in the community and have a little more fun with friends. Once picking teams from the program’s other participants, it was a competition to see who would come up with the best sculpture. The competition was held on Tuesday, December 10 after school. Of course the boys had to come up with a way to get the cans of food needed for the competition and also any ideas for what to do with the food after the construction was completed. They wrote letters to their fellow students as well as the school’s teachers asking for donations for their project. Several teachers donated money for the activity and when the three went to County Market to purchase their “building materials,” the personnel of the store decided to match the donation can-for-can up to 100 cans. On Monday, County Market Manager Mindy Campbell and owner Andy Gorius came through on their end of the bargain when they delivered 100 cans of food to the school. After the Plus 1 activity was completed, the cans of food were delivered to the Hillsboro Lions Club to be used as part of the Empty Stocking Fund. The Hillsboro Lions Club is still looking for donations

before the holiday season is over. If you wish to make a monetary donation you may do so by sending your check to the Hillsboro Lions Club, P.O. Box 13, Hillsboro, WI 54634. If you prefer you may purchase a toy or take a “gently used toy” to Farmers State Bank, Royal Bank, or County Market. The banks have agreed to donate 50 cents for each new or “gently used” toy left at their bank by December 18.

Christmas Community Dinner BY TASHA MUELLER With 11 years under their belt, community volunteers will again be busy preparing for their annual free Christmas Community Dinner. Sponsored by the Hillsboro Wesleyan Church, helpful hands will be serving a delicious Christmas meal for anyone to stop by the Hillsboro High School Cafeteria located at 777 School Ave. The annual event will be held this Saturday, December 21 beginning at 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Plenty of food will be prepared for those hungry bellies, which includes turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables and rolls. Hillsboro Area Businesses and Groups support the meal. If you are in a need of a ride to the school or delivery of meals, call Greg Zimmerman at 608-479-0145 by December 20.

Hillsboro senior and active athlete Matt Bartels signed a letter of intent on December 10 to compete in track and field at Viterbo University in La Crosse. Bartels, who broke three Hillsboro High School track records, will be a sprinter and a jumper at Viterbo for the 2015 season. Viterbo Head Coach John Metelco is looking forward to Matt joining the V-Hawks team, “Matt is a talented studentathlete who will compete to be a top athlete among our sprinters and jumpers. We believe Matt has shown himself to be very capable of competing successfully, and with continued hard work, he will be successful at the college level.” Bartels is being awarded a scholarship for both athletics and academics.

St. Joseph’s Candy Cane Christmas House Walk Five homes in the Hillsboro area decked out for the holidays opened their doors to friends and neighbors to share their special memories and seasonal traditions on Saturday, December 7. Despite the freezing temperatures, many enjoyed the opportunity to tour the homes and speak with homeowners. Each home had its own unique display and creativity inspired by family, design technique, lifestyle, and love of entertaining over the holiday season. The homes included on the walk this year were; Kristie and Greg Zimmerman’s historical Victorian home built in the late 1800’s, also known locally as the “Kelley Home”, Jim and Michelle Rice’s beautiful grace house on Tinker’s Bluff with over 200 snowmen and animated displays, Dory and Wayne Stahlkopf’s home filled with gifts and memories from family and former students. Dory also entertained visitors playing Christmas songs

John and Dana Rick designed their modern contemporary open concept home themselves, which featured a beautiful open winding staircase and breathtaking views from every window, and Kathy Jo and James Coblentz’s home on Ridge Road, which was Jim and Michelle Rice’s home on Tinker’s Bluff. built in 2012, with beautiful countryside views and meant to be lived in and enjoyed by thoughtful decorations throughout, family and friends. “We were very pleased with the turnout for our very first Christmas house walk and poinsettia sale,” stated Barb Potter, committee chair and St. Joseph’s Memorial Foundation board member. “We look forward to continuing this event and hope that the participants were inspired with the holiday spirit as they toured the homes.”

New Lisbon to join Mauston/Necedah Municipal Court in January BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD At Monday evening's meeting of the New Lisbon Common Council members approved moving forward and joining the Mauston/Necedah Municipal Court. The official date this will become effective is January 15, 2014. Currently overseeing the court is Judge Seth Tully. The council also considered and approved for adoption amendments to sewer use ordinance 3118-02-2013. As it stands any commercial/industry found to have greater than

200 milligrams per liter of biochemical oxygen demand (B.O.D.) or suspended solids will face a charge. Prior to the amendments commercial/industry were allowed up to 250 milligrams per liter. Due to a citizen complaint council members held a discussion on wood smoke coming from Walker's. The company has an outside wood burner. The only decision made was the City would contact the business and ask them to rectify any existing issues regarding the smoke. Jeff Scully submitted a conditional use application for land

Annual Chili Cookoff

Breakfast with Santa and more in Necedah

The 7th annual New Lisbon Mayors Chili Cookoff will be held on Saturday January 18th at the New Lisbon City Hall community room. There will be 3 categories of entries - chili, soup, and bread. They will be looking for people to cook and enter entries and people to come and enjoy tasting. Entries should be brought to the City Hall between 8 and 10:30 a.m. the day of the cook off. A fee of $8 will be good for an all you can eat tasting, however, those entering an item can taste for free. Proceeds from this year’s cookoff will go to the New Lisbon swimming pool repair fund. Donations to the swimming pool fund may also be given any time at City Hall or will be accepted at the chili cookoff. For more information contact Mayor Lloyd Chase at 5625799.

BY STEVE NORLING Saturday, December 14th was a busy day in Necedah. It began at 8:00 a.m. with Breakfast with Santa. This is a free breakfast (with donations accepted) put on by the Necedah Lions each year. This year they served 230 breakfasts to both adults and youngsters. The breakfast is cooked and served by the Lions club members and consists of; pancakes, sausage, applesauce, juice and coffee or hot chocolate. Many children did not really care about breakfast; they just wanted to go sit on Santa’s lap, tell him what they wanted for Christmas and get their bag of goodies from him. Meanwhile, the parents got to mill around and get re-acquainted with friends they may not have seen since last year. They could also go on the cookie walk provide by the ladies of the Methodist Church. There was a great array of cookies, which they assured me, all of the calories were taken out of. Another part of the Lions Club giving back at Christmas is their giving of fruit and candy bags to senior citizens. This year they had some great help with packaging the candy. The three second grade classes from the Necedah Elementary School bagged all of the candy. The three teachers; Mrs. Wargowsky, Mrs. Detlor and Mrs. Riggs brought their classes out into an open area and set up an assembly line and oversaw the process. Those youngsters were having a great time doing the job and knowing that they were helping someone else. This was done on Thursday, December 12th in order to have them ready for the Lions to add to their fruit baskets. If you were hungry later Saturday, you could go over to the Necedah Library and sample seven types of Chili. The cost was five dollars for all you could eat. There were the seven kinds of chili along with cornbread and drinks. This luncheon was sponsored by The Friends of the Necedah Library. There

he owns that is currently zoned for commercial/industry use. Scully would like to use the land to grow and harvest produce. A public hearing on the conditional use application has been scheduled to take place on January 20, 2014. Council members approved issuing employee holiday gifts. Employees will receive $25 in Chamber Bucks. Good news for the city's pool. Council members approved receiving more private donations for future renovations. Currently private donations for the pool stand at $5,475.

All of us at the Messenger wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Thank You! Many thanks to the businesses, organizations, individuals, and the many food drives for food, monetary donations, and all the help through the past year. Without your help we would not be able to keep the pantry open. Also, a special thank you to Bethany Lutheran Church for the use of the fellowship room for our pantry. And we must not forget our faithful volunteers, who come to work each week and when called for extra duty. They are the “backbone” of our pantry.

May each and everyone have a Very Blessed Holiday Season!

New Lisbon Food Pantry were also books and other gifts for sale and gift baskets being raffled off as well as a silent auction for a quilt that was made by the Knit One Read Too club. The luncheon was well attended and the chili was excellent. Everyone in attendance enjoyed it. That included the nine residents from the group home who Penny Oens brought and treated to lunch. To cap the day off there was the Holiday Concert presented by the Necedah Middle School and High School Bands and Choirs. This concert began at 7:00 p.m. and kept attendees entertained for the evening. The program began with the middle school choirs. They

split up their numbers with the 6th graders doing two numbers followed by the 7th and 8th grades. Amanda DeGuire was soloist on the song “Peppermint Winter” The 6th grade band next played two numbers and two more with the middle school. The middle school followed this with three numbers on their own. The high school choir was next with four numbers. The song “Christmas is” featured three soloists; Madison Becerra, Marcel LaFountain and Jessica Schmitz. The song “Tell Me What It’s All About” featured four soloists; Samantha Fountain, Logan Lowery, Joe Hiess and Nichole Lynch. That was followed by the high

school band doing four numbers.

Answer to WIAA realignment for Wonewoc-Center will be January 15th BY TASHA MUELLER With ongoing discussion on when and where WonewocCenter, or even if the school would be realigned with a different conference, an answer will be looming forward to see if the school would be a part of the Ridge and Valley Conference. Athletic Director at W-C, Tory Needham, noted that in regards to the Scenic Bluffs Conference and Ridge and Valley Conference, an answer would be given to move forward with the realignment if needed. “We’re either staying or we’re going,” commented Needham. Another point of information that many have been asking is if it would be only football or all of the sports. “It will be for all of the sports,” said Needham. “If we’re going to do this, we might as well do all of them.” Ridge and Valley currently have eight schools, which for football it would be eight teams with Kickapoo – La Farge as a co-op team and have nine teams for all other sports. Board members touched on the topic of getting a spectator bus regarding travel costs for fans traveling to the away games, with the farthest being De Soto, but also the topic of not having many people take part of the bus. Or, the poten-

tial for parents to ride on the team bus, but many commented on how the teams leave early for earlier games and when they discuss game strategies before a big game. All of the Ridge and Valley team Athletic Directors gave a “yes” approval for the realignment, and not all of the Scenic Bluffs schools had gotten back with Needham. If Wonewoc-Center would get the go ahead to be within a different conference, another team would have to fill in the spot with the SBC, which according to Needham would not be Riverdale. “Riverdale will be staying where they’re at.” Riverdale wanted to get into the Six Rivers Conference just for football, but were denied the request. If the move would be approved, the school would have a greater chance of competition with smaller schools, much like the size of W-C, in the Ridge and Valley. And, W-C would still have the local rivalry with non-conference games. Once the decision becomes known on December 15, the decision will be given to the WIAA and be voted on in the spring. If yes, the change would be in effect during the 20152016 season. Needham stated other comments from other Athletic

Directors as “It’s what best for Wonewoc-Center to do and proceed with what will better the athletic department.” After much discussion, Noll and Lozeau commented to the board that children are having way too many requests for daily drop-off and pick-up locations, which is making it hard to have the bus drivers on a constant schedule. Members had motioned to have parents get on a constant schedule for children of where they need to be picked up at and where they should be dropped off. The board approved of the request from FFA Advisor Jacqui Miller for a Pancake Breakfast to be held on Sunday, February 16. Also, a Europe Trip for June 2015 was approved with Kelly Rueckheim presenting information for the 10-day tour around Athens and the Islands. The exact day, which depends on when other groups are scheduled, will be roughly a week after graduation. The bus contract extension was approved, along with renumbering Policies Series 222 to 221 and 223 to 222. Administrative Professional Development – Credit Reimbursement Policies 223.1 and 223.1 (rule). The next board meeting will be January 20 at 7 p.m.

United Cooperative Cenex stores celebrate good deeds with free fuel As a way to recognize and reward people who go above and beyond for their community, United Cooperative, based in Beaver Dam with locations throughout southcentral and east-central Wisconsin, launched Tanks of Thanks in their Cenex convenience stores, including Kendall, Ontario, Wilton, and Wonewoc. The program, initiated by Cenex® -- the CHS energy brand -- gives free fuel to those who make their communities just a little bit better. “Many of our customers are doing good deeds in their local communities every day,” notes Darlene Peterson, manager of United Cooperative’s Kendall Cenex convenience store. “A teenager who shovels driveways or goes grocery shopping for elderly neighbors, parents and leaders who coach youth sports, and volunteers who organize fundraising efforts – we want to recognize them for their generosity.” The Tanks of Thanks program gives Cenex retailers, customers, and anyone else in the community a new way to say “thank you” to neighbors, friends, and family by recognizing their good deeds and nominating them for free fuel from their local Cenex convenience store. United Cooperative’s Kendall, Ontario, Wilton, and Wonewoc Cenex convenience stores all nominated citizens in their local communities to receive $50 Cenex gift cards for volunteering and doing good deeds. Sharing Supper BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD The December Sharing Supper in Mauston came a couple of weeks early so that Santa and Mrs. Claus could make an appearance and celebrate in the community. This month's event was sponsored by the Bank of Mauston, The Mauston Chamber, and Culvers. Entertainment was provided by students of Christine's Center Stage Dance Studio.

Grandpa & Grandma Gore’s Christmas Season 2013 Dear Family and Friends, May the good Lord shower you with blessings this Birth-of Christ season and bless you with an optimistic outlook. It is time for our annual report. 2013 has been a pretty good year for the Gores. No new strokes, no hospital stays, no disasters. We are going to be great-grandparents again (No. 4). Rachel and Garrett are expecting in March. In December 2012, we unofficially adopted friend Betty Leverenz of Elroy into our family in time for our Christmas party, then hired her to help Mary Ann with the heavy cleaning. She comes every two weeks to vacuum the carpets and mop the floors, upstairs and down. She also washed our windows, changes the furnace filters when needed and found us a crew to clean the basement, including removal of the old fuel oil tank (too big to fit thru doors, had to be cut into pieces) and 50 cement blocks. We had new vinyl flooring installed in the kitchen and hallway. The old tile was very difficult to clean, the new is a breeze. Our old three-piece living room window was shot. It fogged up all the time. We had a new single-pane picture window installed. It gives a much better view. In May, we got Betty to drive us to Belvidere, Illinois to visit old friends Murray & Joy Quincer. It was terrific to see them again. There were lots of family gatherings this year. Our daughters and grandsons came in April and we had a belated Easter party. In July, George & Mary Ann celebrated their 60th anniversary. We threw a little party for 40 guests at the Valley Inn in Elroy. Betty provided the music and our children, grandchildren,

and old friend Rich Bearzotti did the entertainment. Our son Andy and wife Debbie came from Little Rock, Arkansas to participate (Master of Ceremonies), and stayed a week to visit. In August, Mary Ann’s brother Joe & wife Lil threw a big “100 descendants” party, Mary Ann’s brother Don and wife Pat celebrated their 50th anniversary, and we held the Gore Family reunion. In September we had a landscaper level and reseed our lawn and plant one new shade tree. The many holes in our lawn are now filled in. Mary Ann’s last aunt, Amelia (Babe) Maas, passed away in October. She was 95 years old. Also in October, George’s brother-in-law Bill Combs, (husband of deceased sister Shirley) passed away in Missouri. He had Parkinson’s Disease. In November, nephew Don Garland of Concrete, WA (husband of Pam Rogge) succumbed to his long battle with cancer. In early November, George attended the AWSC banquet where his much-admired friend, Bill Pfaff, was named Wisconsin Snowmobiler of the Year. Throughout the year, our living-room blinds have been failing. One by one, the cords have broken. All five blinds have been replaced with heavier-duty ones, and we installed new blinds in the bedroom and kitchen. We held our family Christmas party at our home in Elroy with dinner, a special Classic Christmas Movie quiz, and a white elephant gift exchange on December 14th. Keep that optimistic outlook, you look good with a smile. Next annual report due, December 2014. Warmest Regards, Toots & George

Bill’s Corner BY DIANNA ANDERSON Christmas is always a wonderful time of year and one that Bill Smith enjoys immensely with letters to Santa from area students. It is always fun to hear what the request will be from children and the true concern about Santa's reindeer. Bill Smith will be spending this Christmas in a care facility after a long stay in U.W. Madison. Bill has spent 50 plus years giving his life to the news print industry and would still be going strong if he was able to. I know he has many friends in the area as he has spent the last 30 years in Elroy and covering surrounding areas and communities. Bill would appreciate hearing from his friends in the area, and could use a little cheering up, cards and letters can be sent to: Bill Smith c/o Agrace, 5395 E. Most of you know that my husband had an accident almost a year ago and he had a 7 8 9 TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) as a result. I sure didn’t know much about TBI before this but I know a lot more about it now. Some of 10 11 12 13 it I still have trouble processing. Ray has been asking “what is winter like?” a lot. At first I kinda looked at him like 14 15 16 17 “What??” because I didn’t really know what he meant. even if we weren’t around the day it was given, it reaches to all of us in all ages. The gift was given … all we have to do is take hold of it and open it. We do know the good news that our Savior was born. We can read the account any time we want in the Bible in Luke and Matthew. Once we hear it and believe it, we can be like the shepherds. We can tell everyone the good news. That’s what they did. “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.” Or maybe you’re like the Wise Men, searching until you find him. And once you find him, go back to your own little corner of the world and tell others. You don’t want to keep the good news all to yourself, you’ll want to share it. To me, that’s what Christmas is about. Not simply the birth of our Savior, but telling this great good news to others. It is the great commission. Mark says, “He said to them, ’Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.’ “ I know I believe this and I can actually say I know Ray believes it, too. Whether or not we are ready for Christmas, it won’t wait until we are. It’s almost here and I can say we’re ready. Well, mentally at least. As far as the whole other picture I’m not so sure. I don’t have the cleaning done yet, the tree isn’t up, the presents are not wrapped, I haven’t even made out the cards and I can’t find any cookies in the house. So although we may be ready, the house isn’t. It doesn’t matter though, cause the only important thing is that we are ready. Hopefully you will take time to attend a worship service at one of our local churches. To sing hymns of praise to the One who made this celebration possible and to once again listen to the first Christmas story. Until next week I’ll leave you with this NO-nonsense thought: Let Christmas fill your heart so full it overflows and splashes on someone near and dear to you… or maybe on a stranger. n Nancy J Schneider is a member of The Wisconsin Regional Writers Association and writes freelance. Nature of Things BY MARK DAHLKE Many hunters will remember the past deer season for its bitter temperatures. While I count myself among them, I had an experience in the woods that may stay with me longer than the cold memories; I had a spiritual encounter with a deer. A friend invited me to hunt on his land the day after Thanksgiving. We hoped to harvest an antlerless deer and put some venison in the freezer. It did not matter who shot the deer, we just wanted to make sure of a clean, quick kill. He sent me up the hill behind his house while he finished some chores. My hopes were not high as I climbed toward the stand, for I had seen few deer during the season. The leaves were brittle as eggshells from the skiff of snow and each step sounded like I was walking on broken glass. I was certain every deer within a square mile was heading into the next county. After a painfully slow walk, I finally reached the tree stand and noted the quietness of the woods. After sitting for only 45 minutes, I heard the noise of a breaking twig that echoed across the ridge. It was the unmistakable sound of footfalls on the forest floor. Within seconds, I saw the legs and chest of a deer. I raised my gun and found the deer in my scope. The doe was still a long way off and had no idea I was 15 feet off the ground, surrounded by camouflage. Consequently, she continued on a path toward the stand. I caught a glimpse of movement behind her. My pulse quickened, hoping that a buck followed. My heart rate ebbed quickly

however, as two fawns came into focus. “Dang it. Mom and two kids”, I thought. If they kept coming, so would a difficult decision. The doe led the way, being the ever-cautious mother. She moved slowly, her head working like it was on a swivel checking left, right, and then her back trail toward the twins. The fawns clumsily followed making noise and eating acorns. Mom stayed vigilant. Her ears rotated from side to side listening for anything amiss on the ridge. The fawns continued to behave carefree, relying only on their blind faith in Mom’s instinct for danger. A slight breeze blew and the doe stood stock-still. She tested the wind, oblivious to me perched a mere 50 yards away with my rifle trained on her chest. Suddenly, reality sunk in; in a blink of an eye, this weapon would take her life. The deer appeared relaxed, moving slow and deliberate, giving me ample time to mull over the scene unfolding before me. As I fixed the fine lines of the crosshairs behind the doe’s shoulder, my eyes shifted to the upper left portion of the scope where her head appeared. The momentary diversion formed a strange connection between the doe and me on that late November day. I watched her preen; lift her back leg and scratch. She bent her neck and picked at acorns. The doe was living life on her terms, and in her environment. My mind raced with philosophical questions. What thoughts were in the doe‘s mind at that very moment? Were they purely

Taking Refuge

An Outdoorsman’s Journal

BY STEVE NORLING Well there is not too much going on at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge at this time of the year. However, even though it is not from the refuge directly there is some whooping crane news and it is not all good. Earlier this year nine whoopers were taken to Horicon National Wildlife Refuge for Direct Autumn Release (DAR). Four of these birds succumbed to apparent predation and are no longer with us. One of the cranes left with the sandhill cranes and is now on wintering grounds. However, it is the remaining four that proved to be a problem, they refuse to leave. With the bitter cold weather and snow that we already have, this is not a good thing. As of when I write this, the people in charge of this year’s DAR project are planning to capture them and transport them to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama. In all of the years that DAR has taken place both at Necedah and Horicon, this is the first time that anything like this has ever taken place. Hopefully the four cranes can be captured and transported to Wheeler with no more problems. As I said earlier, there is not much going on at the refuge right now. The snow is not deep enough for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing and the bitter cold and windy weather keeps most people indoors. As soon as the snow gets a little deeper someone will be going out on skis to check the crosscountry ski trail. Refuge Manager, Doug Staller, our law enforcement officer and myself are all skiers and one of us will check it out and let all of you know if the trail is in good condition or not. With the slowdown of visitors and outdoor work much of the staff is working on getting ready for next year. For instance as I stated last week Kara Zwickey and I appeared on Judy Clark’s TV show on December 18th to promote the Junior Duck Stamp Contest, which will be judged in March of 2014. There are also other events that take a lot of work to put together, such as the Eco Explorers Day Camps. These are the kind of things that keep the staff busy during the winter. There are also other items to plan for such as, how to handle invasive, how to best protect the endangered species on the refuge and where on the refuge and how many acres will be burned with prescribed controlled burns. All of these things need to be taken care of now so that when spring comes there is not a lot of planning left to do and the staff can get right to taking care of what needs to be done. Speaking of events, there are three snowshoeing events coming up; one in January, one in February and the final one in March. These are “Snowshoe Habitat Hikes”. There are snowshoes available at the refuge to borrow at no cost. However, there a limited supply of them so if you already have snowshoes, it is best to bring them. Search the grounds for winter wildlife and tracks and finish the day with a cup of hot chocolate. These walks take place from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. I will remind you of them as the time gets closer. The first snowshoe hike is on Saturday, January 11th. Winter is also a good time for all of us to think about what we would like to do at the refuge come summer. It is never too early to start thinking about when and where you might want to go to photograph wildlife or scenery. Think about where you were when you saw that great sunrise or sunset this past year. Try to remember where you saw the whooping cranes or the wolves the day you forgot to bring your camera. Start making a list of areas of the refuge you would like to visit and the time of day. Remember, the best time to see wildlife is early morning and late afternoon. Maybe you need a new camera or a new pair of binoculars, now is the time to decide what you can spend and what level of quality you need. Being ready to go when it is time is the best way to get the photos you want or to see the sights that you want to see. Until next week, “See you at the refuge.”

instinctual: food, safety, and survival? Did she have the capacity to experience emotions like compassion for her children, happiness, or sadness? I hoped not. Inner struggles rose inside. What right did I have to pull the trigger and end her life? Would there be confusion for the fawns? What unforeseen consequences would happen because of what I about to do? There were no answers. By now, she had been in my sights for a long time. Now, all I had to do was wait a few seconds for her to step out from behind a log that covered her vital area. I heard my pulse pound in my ears and my heart thumped against my chest. I am not sure why, however. Perhaps it was pure excitement or maybe the conflicted feelings about what was about to happen. Possibly, it was a little of both because in 43 years of hunting, I never had this much time to think before shooting a deer. It was over quickly, probably less than ten seconds. However, that did little to soothe the clash of feelings I had following the blood trail. Writers more gifted than I have struggled to explain the paradox between the satisfaction a hunter feels when a hunt ends with death and then the ensuing aftermath of sadness for taking the life of a beautiful animal. As I bent down, patted, and smoothed the hair on her side, I realized I am a long way from resolving this mystery that has haunted hunters for ages. Mark Dahlke is a free-lance writer from Mauston. A Place called Deer Camp BY MARK WALTERS Hello friends, This week I am writing to you about what many hunters call the second week of deer camp, which is basically Monday through Sunday of the nine-day deer gun season. Monday, November 25th High 20, low 14 For the first two days of the deer gun season, The Red Brush Gang sits in portable stands, and watches the forests and marshes of The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and The Meadow Valley Wildlife Area. The last seven days are spent pushing deer or should I say, hopefully pushing deer to our standers. This year we were ambitious and it was often in some pretty harsh weather conditions. Unlike the last few years, it seemed that we either did not push deer out to our standers or we missed when a running deer came by our standers (I sucked this year). Today there must have been 18 of us and we pushed 1-mile sections of The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. The story of the day was either deer that were too small, young kids missing or no deer coming to our standers. One of our members has been coming to camp for about 7 years and that is 24-year-old Tim Rittmeyer. Tim did not grow up in a house where he had the opportunity to go hunting and being that he is a very good friend with my nephews, Riley and Trent Schuster, we took him into our camp. Today, Tim shot his first buck and everyone in The Red Brush Gang would agree that if there was someone in camp that we wanted to see fill a buck tag, it was Tim Rittmeyer. Our days are spent carrying a rifle, reading the wind, and trying to walk in a line towards our standers who at the start of each drive are 1-mile away and not in sight. We do this with the aid of a compass, watching the sun, and by doing crow calls. There seems to be more deer the last few years but they like to run behind the drive and or into the wind. Because of logistics, we are not always able to place our standers upwind, and it really ‘bites’ when a drive is completed and we hear several stories of deer running backwards or with the wind and where there might not be standers. Something that is really cool about this gang is that we do our best, but no one gets upset if the deer do not go where they are supposed to, or if someone misses. When someone misses, other hunters make some casual jokes, but everyone knows how easy it is to miss a running deer and the beauty of this season is that almost everyone missed. At the end of each drive we drink water, consume food, and the elders plan the next drive and pick the standers and drivers. If you have filled a buck tag, you are an automatic driver, if you have not; you are on the every other drive system unless you are in poor health. This year it seemed like we saw just as many coyotes as deer. On the second weekend of deer camp we found a dead 3point buck, which would become a huge camp joke. Ryan Moll, who is 25, tagged this buck as it was assumed it had only been dead a day or so (maybe a month) as it was not frozen. When we got the buck to camp I took a whiff and it seemed to have a bit of an odor. Ryan’s dad, Jeff Moll got kind of defensive and told me “don’t even go there” referring

to the buck not smelling like our outhouse on day 9 of deer camp. Naturally I listened to Mr. Moll and instantly named Ryan’s trophy “The Stinky Buck” The jokes about that deer did not stop. Kind of like me leaving my truck window open all night next to the campfire and my new (2006) filling up with ash. Everyday a different adult cooks for deer camp and that is the only day they have to cook. This year, one of our elders did not make it to camp so Riley Schuster and Tim Rittmeyer, who used to just be a couple of little diaper fillers, bucked up and cooked a fine meal for our Friday night (with help from Allie)! This year, as always, the Red Brush Gang had a blast, received minimal amounts of sleep and there was a very somber mood as we took down our deer shack and stored it until next November. Even if I am in an oxygen tent or have Alzheimer’s, or am filling my own diapers; I want to be here until my last breath! Sunset

The Hillsboro Farmers State Bank featured a money tree on their float entry. Unfortunately, the money wasn’t real and could not purchase a hot bowl of soup on Saturday’s chilly evening.

The Silent Rooster, a Wonewoc downtown business, had its first float entry this year with a “Reel in the Holidays” theme.

Boyscout Troop 119 focused on a mining theme with the group float as participants peaked over their boxes and waved to the crowd. The Center Street Coffee and Streets had this float go on through the parade adoring their new slogan, “I heart Wonewoc.” Shirts with this sang are now available at the downtown coffee shop.

A beautifully decorated train in loving memory of Jim Conley focused on believing in the spirit of the holiday season. Cory’s Auto Body sponsored the train.
