LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT October 21, 2013 - Officer Bazarow) was dispatched to Hope Wood Apartments to assist the Sheriff ’s Department. Upon arrival, he was advised that Misty Milliken was under arrest for an Alias Bench Warrant and he was asked by Deputy Bateman to help Deputy Dumond search the vehicle that she was driving. While Bazarow was on the driver’s side of the vehicle Milliken tried to slip her son a bag of green leafy like substance later identified as marijuana. Deputy Bateman then retrieved the bag and placed it on the hood of Deputy Dumond’s truck. Milliken also had a baggie containing three different types of pills that were later identified as Acetaminophen, Methocarbamol, Acyclovir, and Mirtazapine, none of which is a controlled substance but they were seized because they were not in their prescription bottles. Milliken was then transported to Arkansas County Jail and booked in for Possession of Marijuana and for the Alias Bench Warrant. October 21, 2013 - Officer Crossett was dispatched to 1104 South Madison for a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, a male subject came out of the residence stating “Take me to jail.” The male subject then identified himself as Justin Goggins. At this time, Crossett asked Goggins what was going on, but could not give a straight answer. At this time, Officer Brad Bazorow arrived on scene and went inside the residence and spoke with the two female subjects. One female stated that Goggins came in the residence and was talking a lot of bull. Goggins then went to the kitchen and tried to cook and she told him she had already cooked. She then stated that one thing led to another and she got up and Goggins pushed her down. The other female stated that Goggins knocked the first female down and then threatened to slit her throat. Goggins was then placed under arrest for domestic battery and taken to the Arkansas County Detention Center. October 26, 2013 - Officer Spencer made contact with an unknown juvenile on 6th Street that advised there was a party at the corner of Van Buren and 4th Street. He called Officer Truax to the location and advised him of the situation. Spencer went down Jackson Street to Van Buren and from there went on foot to 413 South Van Buren. Officer Truax approached from 4th Street to block off anyone from leaving. Spencer approached the residence and observed two high school students carrying, what he believed to be alcohol (Beer 12 oz Can). They ran into the house, after he ordered them to stop. He pursued after them as they left the door open behind them and were still in plain site. While inside the residence, the owner wanted the officer to exit the residence. He complied but also made all occupants exit the residence and took it outside. While outside all that were over 21 years of age were allowed to leave or go back inside. All that were under 21 were given a Portable Breath Test. Those that were not drinking but under 18 called a parent/guardian to pick them up. Those over 18 were allowed to stay or leave that were not drinking. All that were drinking and the PBT showed presence of Alcohol were made to stay and cited for Minor in Possession and released to their parents if under 18. The lone minor over 18 years of age was arrested and transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center. The home owner said it was his residence and he knew the kids were there. He said he did not know they were drinking. Spencer observed several bottles of Alcohol sitting in the area the Minors were congregating. He went on to say, he had seen them in there dancing around. It should also be noted that the Minors carrying the beer outside were talking to him as the officer approached. The owner was cited for Social Host-3-3-219.
Time to Soil Sample Gardens and Lawns Now is as good time to take soil samples for several reasons. One is that you need a current sample for any fall garden or fall flowerbed changes you may be making. Samples that were run in the spring after a growing season may be different than what fall or winter plants need. Even if you do not plan on planting things for the fall, the potassium and phosphorus should be fairly stable in the soil once summer crops, flowers, etc. quit growing and taking it up. Phosphorus and potassium can be applied in the winter. Do not expect to get any nitrogen benefits
from fall application of a complete fertilizer like 1313-13 in the spring because nitrogen is very mobile in the soil. The exception is if you do have fall annuals or plants that will continue to grow through winter. But remember, you do not want much excessive growth heading into winter months. Fall is a great time to apply lime if the soil needs it. This will depend upon what is to be grown or maintained. For example, most plants grow better with a neutral pH while azaleas need a more acidic soil. One thing to remember when applying lime is that you need to apply the whole amount that is recommended for that sample. Sometimes pelletized lime can be easier to work with especially in garden, yard, or flower bed projects. Lime recommendations are based on regular ag lime. If pelletized lime is used, you can cut the lime rate approximately in half. For example, the soil sample recommends 50 lbs of lime to be applied per 1000 sq ft. Only about 25 lbs of pelletized lime would need to be applied. For soil sampling, collect soil from the top 4-6 inches in several places in the area you are sampling, mix together and bring 1 pint of soil to the Extension Office for processing to the lab. One final and very important reason for sampling in the fall is that the Soil Lab is not as likely to be backed up with samples as they will be in the spring. Remember that soil sampling only costs time and effort but may result in saving a lot of headaches through proper fertilization. For additional information on soil sampling procedures, contact the Arkansas County Extension Office at 870946-3231 or 870-673-2346.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Stuttgart is known as the rice and duck capital of the world, unfortunately the way crime and violence has engulfed our city, I am sure we are becoming the violence and crime capital of the world. 2013 has seen a wave of crime and violence, and it appears our elected city leaders are not concerned. Stuttgart Mayor Marianne Maynard, serving her second term, appears not concerned about this epidemic, as long as it doesn’t occur in her neighborhood. The mayor has not spoken publicly about her plans to combat crime in Stuttgart and under this administration crime has risen to and all time high. The mayor has not held a press conference, or sent out a press release along with Stuttgart Chief of Police Mike Smith, regarding crime and violence in Stuttgart. Earlier this year a 74 year old senior citizen was robbed in her own home; then earlier this week an 89 year old senior citizen was robbed and beaten in her own home as her 92 year old husband helplessly looked on. Enough already. It’s time our elected officials come up with a plan to put more police officers, auxiliary officers and sheriff deputies on the deadly and dangerous streets of Stuttgart. During the fall festival there is a strong police presence in our city. This is the type of police presence we need in Stuttgart almost on a daily basis. When our elderly citizens are being robbed and beaten in their own homes, it’s time to take a stand in Stuttgart. Our elected officials can find the money for police officers, auxiliary officers and sheriff deputies during the festival, then they must come up with the money to keep our citizens safe, especially our

seniors. The mayor must communicate with Stuttgart Chief of Police, to put more boots in patrol cruisers, but the citizens of Stuttgart must know that the very officers sworn to serve and to protect are indeed on patrol and not some place else waiting on a call. This is the reason the mayor must demand to Chief Smith to equip all police cruisers with Global Positioning System (GPS). Our elderly citizens deserve to know their tax dollars are truly going to serve and to protect all citizens who are paying into their retirement fund. Enough already. Stuttgart was once a place where crime and violence were as rare as Mayberry R.F.D.; however, with the sale and use of illicit drugs, time has brought about a change, a change we will never embrace. Chief Smith must do more to protect the citizens of Stuttgart, especially our seniors who cannot defend themselves. Mayor Maynard perhaps should talk with Arkansas County Judge Glenn (Sonny)Cox and Arkansas County Sheriff Allen Cheek about placing more deputies on the dangerous streets of Stuttgart. I know this would have to go before the Quorum Court; however, I am optimistic the court would find the money to place more deputies on the deadly streets of Stuttgart to keep our elderly citizens safe in their homes. I am a staunch supporter of the second amendment (the right to bear arms), and I encourage our citizens, especially our seniors citizens, to arm themselves because they have the right under the constitution to stand their ground in their homes. St. Charles, Crocketts Bluff and Ethel News By Margaret Aycock – 870-282-8030 jaymara@hughes.net The Lester Family Reunion turned out to be a good one. Although, not all family member of past and present were able to come “home” for this reunion, I understand there were approximately 75 attendance. I will have the full write-up and hopefully a picture of the four remaining sister to follow next next week. Elizabeth Criswell of DeWitt, formally of St. Charles, is the oldest living member of Mr. and Mrs. Reese Lester’s children. Shirley Jackson of DeWitt and Ida Newkirk of St. Charles traveled to Louisiana Thursday afternoon to spent several days visiting with Carolyn (West) Rouse of Shreveport. J.W. and Margaret Aycock attended the
chili supper and bingo game Thursday night at the Crockett’s Bluff Community Center in Crockett’s Bluff. We really had a good time as always. The food was delicious and we love the fellowship. Thanks, folks, for having us as your guest. J.W. and I plan to become members at the next meeting which will be in January. Emily Jackson of DeWitt visited J.W. and I Sunday afternoon. We were very glad to see her because now that her family has moved from Stuttgart to DeWitt, we do not get to to see her much anymore. After all, school has started, and that explains a lot. Congratulations are in order for Heath and Katie (St. John) Watson , formally of Helena, on their wedding at the DeWitt City Park in DeWitt.

FAITH & RELIGION WEEKLY SERMON
To Answer Some Honest Questions By William Wood There were repercussions to last week’s sermon, and I do appreciate the opportunity to answer some honest questions. The discussion centered around this statement made in last weeks sermon, “Will you continue to deny that God has already sent the Prophet of Malachi 4:5 to warn the world, just before the terrible day of judgement comes.” (Speaking of the day that Peter prophesied was coming.) Then we stated that, “God Himself waits for your personal answer to this question.” And so some asked after this manner, “Are you saying that we have to Believe that the Prophet spoken of in Malachi 4:5 (The Prophet Elijah) has come and gone before we can go to Heaven? No! We are only saying that you have to Believe that a man came with the spirit of Elijah on him and fulfilled that prophecy, if you expect to go in the soon coming Rapture! In Matthew Chapter 25, the Bible speaks of ten virgins, five were wise and five were foolish. The wise went up when the Bridegroom came, (for the Rapture) but the foolish were left to go thru the Tribulation Period, where they will be purged of their unbelief! Now I will ask you some questions, and I pray you will answer honestly! Do you think you can go in the Rapture denying some of Gods word? For example, do you think you can go if you deny that God sent Noah? The Bible says he came and warned of the Flood, and we have to believe that! Do you think you can go in the Rapture if you deny that God sent
a man named Moses, and that he brought the Israelites out of Egypt? Do you think you can leave in the Rapture if you deny that God sent a man called John the Baptist to point out the Messiah? And what about when Christ did come, and say to the woman at the well, “I am He that is speaking to you.” Do you know you have to believe what the Bible says about these things before you can go in the Rapture? Surely you know this much, having been raised in a nation that was established on the word of God! I do not say that you have to understand all that is written, but I do say we have to believe it all! And I use the word of God to back up the statement. Revelations 22: 18-19 “If any man shall add to the word or take away anything it says, his name shall be taken out of the Book of Life.” Then in view of these things, I ask you this question, how can you think you can go in the Rapture while you don’t believe that God sent the Prophet of Malachi 4:5 to warn us, just before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord? You scholars may say that was John the Baptist, but the fire didn’t fall at the end of his ministry, which was 2000 years ago. But it’s ready to fall now, just as soon as God takes His Bride out of the way! And so we join the ranks of the so-called cult leaders of times gone by, and pray that one day soon we will be called to stand with that small group of out cast at the White Throne judgement. Amen.

Courage Under Fire By Tom Smith
“Take that Bible off your desk!” Such was the command a senior-ranking military officer reportedly gave to one of his subordinates a few weeks ago, saying “It’s offensive!” And, sadly, the soldier obeyed the unlawful command for fear of reprisal. More and more it seems that a climate of hostility is developing in our nation’s military, with the Army and Air Force seemingly leading the way. For a long time there’s been pressure to silence evangelical Christians; but, now it seems to be growing stronger and more sinister in nature. Yes, for many years there’s been pressure on us military chaplains to not end our prayers at a command function with “In Jesus’ Name.” In fact, a few years ago one Navy chaplain was threatened with a court martial for continuing to do so, but the U.S. Supreme court ultimately ruled he could if he was praying according to the dictates of his conscience. Even so, anyone in the military knows that standing one’s ground on such issues can be costly career-wise. Just a few months ago a highly-decorated, Air Force senior master sergeant was removed from his position and told to retire after he differed with his immediate supervisor on the issue of homosexuality. Now we read of Army soldiers at Fort Hood attending a predeployment briefing being told that evangelical Christians and members of the Tea Party were a threat to our nation. And, any soldier donating to those groups or “terroristic groups” like the American Family Association (AFA) could be subjected to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). This comes right on the heels of another report that anyone found sharing his/her faith with someone else could also be prosecuted. Unbelievable!! What in the world is going on?!? It would seem that there’s an attempt to target Christians in the military and silence them. Just last week Mikey Weinstein, an avowed atheist, filed a complaint against the Air Force Academy for using “So help me, God” in its cadet’s oath.
And, I predict they very likely will remove it in light of the current climate to conform or suffer the consequences. But, dear Reader, if they do, where will it end? If we evangelical Christians keep fearing lawsuits more than the sword, we soon shall have no voice at all. And, in light of those courageous, heroic “Champions of Faith” in the past who preferred death over denial of their Faith (Hebrews 11:32-40; Fox’s Book of Martyrs), we can ill-afford to not follow their lead. That’s why I determined a long time ago that the cross on my uniform means more than the rank on my shoulders. If my true Commander-inChief—the Lord Jesus Christ— Who has many more stars than any earthly general, told me to pray in His Name, then I’ll continue to do so regardless of the cost. I never thought I’d see the day here in America where there’d be such persecution of Christians. I can understand it in Islamic nations in the Middle East, but I cannot believe it’s happening right here in “the home of the free and the brave.” Even so, I’ll continue to wear my uniform with pride. I’ll continue to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of these United States. I’ll continue to be sensitive to the pluralistic beliefs of those with whom I serve in the military. But, I will not—I cannot—give in to the pressure or intimidating (terroristic) threatening of folks like Mikey Weinstein or any other individual. Instead, I will continue “laying aside every weight and sin that so easily trips me up, run patiently the Race that is set before me and keep my eyes glued on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my Faith” (Heb. 12:1-2). Here’s hoping you’ll continue to do the same. God bless you. (NOTE: If you’d like to contact Bro. Tom or receive his daily e-mail devotional, entitled “Morning Manna,” you can write him at P.O. Box 10614, Fort Smith, AR 72917 or e-mail him at pressingon@hotmail.com.)

He went through rigorous psychological testing. At the age of six, he couldn’t count to ten. He did not know his ABC’s and was unsure if he was a boy or a girl. He developed murderous impulses and violent tendencies. He bounced in and out of eight different foster homes before finally landing with a family on a farm. What followed were years of identity uncertainties, all while relying on various forms of music and verse as an outlet. He became a loner, then a “skater punk.” He even became a rapper, going by the moniker “Diamond D” and competed in and won rap battles. He was constantly in fights, attacked others and stayed in trouble at school. He was surrounded by violent tragedies, from murders to plane crashes, of family members. After one particularly frightening incident in which he attacked three people, including a pastor and counselor, he finally had an emotional breakdown/breakthrough that slowly began to change his life. “I stopped thinking about my parents and wanting their approval,” he said, “and began thinking about me.” He eventually learned

Derek Clark: Motivator. Educator. By Kevin Brown Holding a guitar with the sticker HOPE emblazoned on it, Derek Clark sat down at Dana’s House last Tuesday. And what he said, you weren’t expecting to hear. Even being somewhat aware of his background, even hearing other horror stories of abused kids before, nothing could have prepared you for this. What he said over the next hour made you flinch. And the kids gathered around him, kids with abominable stories of their own, kids that grew up knowing all about flinching, flinched too. What hurt him in his youth, it hurt to hear. Derek was conceived when his mother was raped. At seven months pregnant, she was attacked by his father in an attempt to kill him. And that was the first time. “So that’s how I came into the world,” he said. The next five years, he would be subject to a tapestry of unthinkable horrors: burned with hot water and thrown in toilets to drown (that’s right, toilets) until his father was sent to Folsom Prison for the criminally insane and his mom abandoned him at a psychiatric hospital, where he wouldn’t see her again for 25 years.

Pet Talk: Howl-Oween Safety
Cobweb covered doorways, porches lined with glowing pumpkins, and miniature visitors draped in white sheets can only mean one thing: Halloween is right around the corner. With the holiday rapidly approaching, it is time to start planning your favorite traditions. In addition to the pumpkin carving and costume parties, keeping your pets safe during this holiday is an importation tradition to uphold. Whether they are your child’s faithful trick-ortreating companion, or the Toto to your Dorothy costume from the Wizard of Oz, pets can be an integral part of your Halloween celebrations. “It is more than okay to dress your pet up in a Halloween costume, as long as the costume fits them appropriately and isn’t too tight,” says Dr. Mark Stickney, Clinical Associate Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “A good rule of thumb is to make sure that you can easily slip two fingers underneath whatever bands are in the costume and to not leave the costume on them when they are unsupervised.” Just keep in mind that while a costume may be cute and funny to you, your pet may disagree. When your pet is accompanying you on your trick-or-treating route, or helping to welcome your sweet-toothed visitors, make sure they are
constantly under close supervision and on a leash. “There is definitely some mischief that goes on during Halloween, and it is highly recommended that you keep your pets inside the house,” said Stickney. “If they are indoor/outdoor animals, this is the night to keep them indoors.” Stickney also recommends that outdoor-only pets be kept in a safe and secure location, such as a fenced-in backyard with the lights on, so you can routinely monitor their whereabouts. People with black cats should be extra certain to keep them safe and indoors, as they are, unfortunately, the target for many pranks on Halloween night. You should also make sure that your pet has proper identification, such as a microchip or a collar with detailed contact information. It isn’t unusual for pets to slip through the frequently opened front door, and if spooked by noisy groups of small goblins, run too far to find their way back. If Scruffy is helping you greet trick-or-treaters at the door, make sure he is comfortable with the intrusion of strangers. Some animals can become overwhelmed with all of the chaos, and growl or even snap at the overzealous guests. There is nothing like an emergency trip to the veterinary hospital to spoil your Halloween fun, so be certain to keep
the candy bowl as far away from your pet as possible. “Candy, especially dark chocolate, is extremely toxic to dogs,” said Stickney. “If they do get a hold of it, call your veterinarian immediately and tell them what exactly they ate and how much of it they consumed.” There are plenty of pet-approved treats to give them other than the leftover Kit-Kat bars they keep eyeing. There are a few tips for decorating your haunted house as well. “One thing to potentially watch out for are any decorations with streamers or artificial spider webs,” said Stickney. “If cats try to catch and eat these, they could contract a linear foreign body which would require emergency surgery to remove.” Keeping open flames, like a candle inside a carved pumpkin, out of reach is recommended as well. Curious puppies or kittens can easily knock them over, getting burned or inadvertently setting your house on fire. Opt for a batteryoperated candle instead. Parents take extra precautions so that their children’s Halloween experience is safe and enjoyable, but it is important to extend the same care to your beloved pets. As long as you follow these general safety guidelines, Scruffy and Fluffy are sure to be in for a howlin’ good Halloween.

ate pickets were driven out. There he learned his advisory was still ten miles distant at Princeton and had sent off a supply train loaded with captured goods besides horses, mules, and former slaves. Lt. Col. Caldwell decided to attack the Confederates at Princeton. But when Marmaduke’s pickets brought news that the Federals were at Tulip, he quickly evacuated the town and move 12 miles to gain the Camden Road. Rather then attempt overtaking the Confederates, he abandoned the pursuit in favor of a 30 mile west ward march to Arkadel-
phia where he expected to find a friendly infantry column. Finding no troops there, Caldwell made an uneventful withdrawal back to Benton, arriving there October 31. The entire expedition was fruitless but for capturing a few men, a large mail, and a dozen mules. The command had taken no rations and expected to subsist on food taken from civilians. But Marmaduke had stripped the country which made for a distressing movement for Caldwell’s men and horses. (Margaret Ross, Chronicles of Arkansas, Little Rock, Arkansas, October 29, 1963)

SPORTS Dragons Fall Against Bobcats. Will Stand Against Bulldogs By Kevin Brown So the Senior Dragons—our Senior Dragons—lost their 2nd straight conference game. So what? So this loss was to a team that, on paper, we should have beaten. Again, so what? So our overall record sits at 4-4 with a 2-3 conference record. So what, so what, so what? There are two games left. Oh, and there’s the little thing as the opportunity to advance to the state playoffs. THE STATE PLAYOFFS! Ever seen those action movies where the hero is fighting the villain and begins to take his/her lumps that scoots us a little closer to the edges of our seats? It has to be that way, right? If our hero simply walks through and destroys everything in his/her path without a blemish, well where’s the drama, the excitement in that? Apply that to our season here and our season now. Our chance at a winning season here and our chance at a winning season now. “They got the momentum early,” Coach Jones said. “And we couldn’t get it to swing our way,” he said. Enough said. Momentum, lack of execution etc. That was LAST FRIDAY. Not this one. So. Deep breath and— Next game. Listen to our Coach: “Our next game will be a great challenge. Star City has had a good season so far, but so have we. We need a great week of practice and our kids understand that. There are four teams with a 2-3 record in our conference. Our Seniors need to pull our team together and get us back on the right path. The fact is, if we just execute, we have a chance every Friday night. When one guy slips up, we give up big plays. We need to have 11 guys doing their jobs together, not 9 or 10.” And pay close, close attention this last statement: “Our kids will keep fighting. We still have a great opportunity to advance to the STATE PLAYOFFS. And if that isn’t enough motivation to practice hard, I don’t know what would be.” A player commented earlier in the season that the chemistry is just different this season. That they’re playing for the guys on their left and right and sorting the glory out later. Team band together on the green. Fans band together in the stands. Do that and playoffs—STATE PLAYOFFS!—here we come.
Junior Dragons Beat Dumas, Take 3 in Conference By Kevin Brown The Junior team wrapped up the season Thursday night with a final victory behind another strong performance in the run game and an excellent defensive outing. What became almost a chorus for the season, Jamarious Bradford had another 100 yard game and a touchdown combined with a monster rushing display by Jamari Gamble, who piled up 131 yards on only 11 carries. Gamble had a couple of scores—one for 41 yards and another from 1 yard out—in the effort.
Dragon Pride Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Bay capitalized on two scores with a couple of 2 point conversions and Jacob Boyd added 18 yards on the ground. The defensive played very well, holding Dumas scoreless until the fourth quarter and forcing a few turnovers along the way. McCoy Sollars recovered two fumbles and Author Dabner blocked a punt. The Dragons finished the season in 3rd place in the conference with the win. “I was very pleased with the amount of kids that stepped up this season,” Coach Horton said. “They played with a lot of heart and gave everything they had on every play. The 13 9th graders
set a great example for the 8th graders. I hope those 13 continue their success on up into Senior High in the years to come.” The coach also added that the team now belongs to the 8th graders, of which many contributed this season. “They have to work hard in the offseason and not be satisfied with what they have already done,” he said. “I am ready to find out which kids will step up for us next year like so many did this year.” As for the fans, so are we.
