Dilbert Biswell, La Plata, MO RADIO COVERAGE SURVEY BEING CONDUCTED BY MSHP Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, would like to make the citizens of Troop B aware of a radio coverage survey. Patrol members and retired Patrol personnel will be conducting a radio coverage survey on new communications equipment for the entire Troop B area in Northeast Missouri. The survey must be done on every road and area to ensure overall system performance and is scheduled to begin in the Troop B area on August 13, 2012. At times, citizens will observe unmarked patrol vehicles traveling at a very slow rate of speed in some of the more rural areas in Troop B. The unmarked vehicles are occupied by one Patrol member or a retired Patrol employee and an employee from the Motorola Company. The field testing is expected to last 40 days. For further information or questions, please call 660-385-2132.

The Santa Fe Lake has some new additions for swimmers, young and old. The Park and Recreation Board has spent a lot of hard work and money by putting up two new slides, two diving boards and a dock, as well as having new playground equipment on the way for the park area. The board spent some ofå the funds from the Elizabeth Carpenter Estate in the amount of approximately $48,000 for all the equipment and installation. The board also plans on adding new additions to the City Park by winter. The large slide hosts a water pump, giving the slide a stream of lake water running down as you slide. Kids have been enjoying the new equipment and it makes a great addition to the lake.

MODOT, AG WORK TO ALLOW HEAVIER LOADS ON HIGHWAYS As the harvest season approaches, farmers in some areas of Missouri are carefully watching river levels in light of Missouri’s extremely dry conditions. Lower water levels on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers can limit producers’ ability to move grain and other farm products by barge. The Missouri Department of Agriculture requested, and the Missouri Department of Transportation agreed, to allow heavier

than normal loads of grain throughout the harvest season. Farmers, private and for-hire motor carriers may carry up to 10 percent more than their licensed weight on Missouri highways. However, the heavier loads are not allowed to use interstate routes. Overweight permits will not be required. All other traffic and motor carrier regulations that normally apply remain in place. This waiver is in effect through December 31, 2012. While

the waiver is in effect, participating motor carriers are limited to: ·A loaded, gross weight no greater than ten percent (10%) above the gross licensed weight of the commercial motor vehicle, ·Transportation only within the State of Missouri, ·Drivers must obey all posted bridge weight limits, ·When crossing a bridge, the driver must restrict the vehicle speed to no more than thirty miles per hour (30 mph) and must center

the truck between two lanes of the bridge. The truck driver must yield to oncoming traffic, and ·Travel on highways other than Missouri interstate and national defense highways – No travel is allowed on Missouri interstate highways or national defense highway routes. All travelers are advised to visit the MoDOT Traveler Information Map at www.modot.org for up-todate road closure information.

WALKING THE BABY

Blonde But Blunt BY BECKY JEFFCOAT EDITOR/PUBLISHER lpnews@marktwain.net

Over the weekend I spent alot of time with family as we attended the Circus on Friday evening sponsored by the La Plata Promotional Committee! We had a great time. Some of the looks on Quinci Jo’s face were priceless. It was her first, but I promise not her last! On Saturday we headed to Brashear for my uncle’s 80th Birthday Party. It was a success. We had a fish fry and a carry-in, so much food the outside of my body hurt as well as the inside!! WoW, my family can COOK!! Eighty years! Well I hope I make it, but not counting on it. The way I ride a 4-wheeler and play poker, I’m liable to wreck and kill myself or get shot under the card table first. Oh I know they don’t carry guns to the poker games anymore like they used to, well I hope they don’t anyway. Hmmm, maybe I should start checking into that, I bluff alot!! Anywho, I saw alot of family I haven’t placed my eyes on for awhile and some I haven’t seen that live in town, grief, where does the time go that we don’t even have enough time to spend with our family that only live a few blocks away. We need to slow down and smell the flowers, or at least sniff out Aunt Mary’s cookin’ and go visit her more!! Some of my cousins were in town for the birthday party, you know, the one’s I only see when hunting season comes around. You would think that if they came all this way to shoot a deer, they could at least stop by and say hey, want to feed me some dinner or something. Good Grief! Oh well, its great to have seen them over the weekend. Cleaned out the storage unit and moved everything to the garage. My kids think I hoard things, but if my brother would come and get his stuff I wouldn’t have so much, besides that I have Sammie Jo’s Christmas

JEFFCOAT Tree, about 6 boxes of my moms precious dishes and pictures, my father’s medals, photos of the war and personal items, I really don’t have much of my own stuff in there. Well I did find my old Letter Jacket, that was a hoot and a holler to see in a box. My kids had a good laugh at that. HaHa! Kids!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh!!!!!!! Got several things done and put away, forgot what it was like to clean out a garage per say, lot of boxes to go through and then you start finding old pictures, trinkets and saying to the kids “look at these” or “I remember this” and of course they don’t care. So what do I do? Just do it some more! hehe Those silly kids think I’m boring, but I have news for them. No way is this Memaw boring. I can keep up with them, well not physically, but mentally, any day of the week. I still got some gusto and they will be dragging tail before the end of the day keeping up with me and my wit. My mind is a gear, always thinking about something. Mostly nothing important, but still figuring out how to make a million. Evidently the lottery doesn’t work. We are charging batteries and getting our pencils sharpened for the Soybean Festival. We will be out there covering events as fast as we can and the paper will be full of fun and bright pictures in the September 5th issue. Looking forward to seeing old friends, making new friends and spending some time with the community. Hope to see you there. Keep It Kool, Bec

Driving through town last week I spotted this gorgeous little girl pushing her baby doll on an errand with grandma in downtown La Plata. Logann Hall and her grandma, Donna Hall enjoyed the nice weather on Friday and took a walk downtown to enjoy the sun.

The 13th Hawkins-Ross Family Reunion The 13th Hawkins-Ross Family Reunion was held Saturday, August 4, 2012, in La Plata, Missouri, at the Silver Rails Event Center with a cooler temperature of high 80s and a rain shower. Missouri has experienced many days/weeks of high 90s to 108 degree temperatures and severe drought. There were 45 attending. Aaron Hawkins, son of Keith Hawkins, was the instigator of this reunion and shared hosting with Janis (Hawkins) Mitten, Judy (Hawkins) Ross, and Beth (Hawkins) Mason. Coffee and doughnuts were provided before lunch. Lunch was catered by Chris Vestal. Before lunch, families introduced themselves and told where they live, number of children and grandchildren, etc. Reverend Robert Agee (son of Wayne and Donna (Hawkins) Agee) asked the blessing. In this age of technology, DVDs of family members and previous family reunions were shown on

a large TV screen and two computer screens. These picture DVDs were created by Jerald Mason. Recorded piano background music was provided by Janis Mitten. A large genealogy poster was created and displayed by Aaron Hawkins, as well as a Hawkins-Ross genealogy book about eight family names: Hawkins, Wolf, Ross, Wilkins, Richardson, Bentley, Syler and Bachtel. Aaron also provided Civil War newspaper articles of family ancestors and a book sent to him from a town in Germany where the Wilkins name was prominent. Denise (Van Hara) Watson provided Ross genealogy records and many Ross family pictures – how wonderful it was to see those pictures. A short meeting was led by Janis Mitten reading previous reunion minutes. It was suggested we plan future reunions to stay in touch, but no specific plans were made. Also present were five

A short business meeting was held presided over by Nancy Belfield. Oldest present was Bobby Buck, 85 and youngest present was Morgan Belfield, 19 months. Traveling the farthest was Donna Magers Shelton of Kansas. One death was reported, which was Vera Easley Helton. Sue Wynne reported a new grandson, Tyson David Blaine Campbell. FAITH

Pastor’s Corner If we invite Jesus in, then we must want him in our lives. If we want him in our lives than we must want him to be comfortable. If we want to be comfortable then we allow him to throw out anything that makes him uncomfortable. That means we allow Jesus to get rid of the sin that is in our lives, even the sin that is comfortable to us like a favorite chair or couch. If we allow Jesus to throw out those sins then we must be ready for him to replace those sins with something else. Just like we replace a piece of old furniture with a new one or when we replace a loaf for bread that has gone bad with a new, fresh loaf of bread. Those sins that Jesus wants to get rid of for us are behaviors that are not healthy for us. They are ways of living that do not lead to eternal life but lead instead to death or separation from God. Jesus will replace these with ways of living or behaviors that are pleasing to God, that lead to eternal life for us. If we allow Jesus to remain in us, then he will be active in our lives and

PASTOR THOMAS will help us to live in a way that is pleasing to God and that will help us to be perfected in God’s love. This means that we love others perfectly, without any response on their part. Our love for others is not dependant on them. We love them in the same away Jesus loves us. Jesus loves us no matter what we do or say. That does not mean we always love or even like or approve of their actions or words. It means that we love them despite these things. Wouldn’t that make this world a better place to live. COMMUNITY NEWS Former Queen Soyas To Be Honored At 60th Reunion The first pageant was held in 1953 when an estimated crowd of 2,000 was present when Toby Baldwin Johnson was crowned as the first Queen Soya. The pageant has been held each year since that time under the direction of several individuals and organizations. Don White, who was one of the initial organizers of the first Labor Day Celebration in 1953, and Lois Bragg served as the coordinators of the event for several years as well as several of the Beta Sigma Phi Chapters. During some of the earlier years, it wasn’t unusual for over 40 contestants to compete for the title of Queen Soya with many young ladies from surrounding communities. In later years, the pageant was limited to only young ladies attending the La Plata R-II School District. Karen Mossbarger Bragg, (1965) and Stacey Bragg Ross, (1987), were the first Mother/Daughters crowned. Donna Fredman Thompson (1973) and her daughter Andrea Thompson (1994) were the only other Mother/Daughters crowned. GOOD THINKING

Going To The Dogs Every country has its wise sayings. Someone recently commented on the state of our nation: “We’re in sad shape; seems like we’re going to the dogs. Which reminded me of some other wise sayings regarding dogs: A barking dog never bites; “A dog is man’s best friend; “Every dog has his day; “He who lies down with dogs rises up with fleas; “Let sleeping dogs lie;“Love me, love my dog; “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks; “The tail doesn’t wag the dog; “The dog days of August. Even the Bible is filled with sayings about dogs: Psalm 22:16 --- “The dogs are all around me, a crowd of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet. In this instance, “dogs refer to the Gentile peoples, or to anyone who is not Jewish. Matthew, in his Gospel, has these words: “Don’t give to dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine. God is instructing His people to live lives of holiness and righteousness; Many people do not know, and do not want to know, what living in a “right relation with God is all about. Some are at war against all that is right and good and holy in life; they trample holiness in C Y

the mud and mire of life, and sling mud at anyone who tries to live a righteous life. In Mark’s Gospel (7:27-28) we find this story: Jesus has gone to another place to get away from the crowds, and to get some R & R. Jesus cannot hide from those who are seriously seeking Him. A Greek women, one of those Gentile “dogs, finds Jesus and begs him to heal her daughter. Jesus’ reply sounds strange to us: “it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs. Perhaps Jesus is merely expressing the prejudice common in his day. Perhaps Jesus sees that his primary mission is to the Jews first, and secondly to the Gentiles. Yet, instead of taking offense, the woman persists: “That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the children’s table. Jesus responds to her persistence, and her faith; He heals her daughter. We live in a dog-eatdog world. At times, we feel that this world is going to the dogs. The forces of Darkness and Evil have brought our standards of living to an all-time low. Selfishness and greed, envy and immorality appear to be winning. We live in a world where corruption and pollution triumph. Instead of trying to work M K

things out, people resort to violence to settle their differences. Hatred and bitterness have replaced love. The Good News is that Jesus Christ can, and will, heal our illnesses, solve our situation, and make life worth the living! Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, has conquored the forces of Sin and Evil and Death! We, however, must show persistence! We must be persistent in seeking Jesus, persist until we find Him. We must be per-

sistent in seeking his help and His healing, for our lives and for the lives of those around us. God is persistent! God actively comes and looks for those who have lost their sense of direction in life, those who have taken a wrong turn and have wandered away from God. God persists in loving us “dogs; in fact, God loved us so much that He sacrificed His only Son on the Cross! God reminds us: “I am with you always; I will never leave you nor for-

sake you! dogs, Jesus Christ can “teach us old dogs new tricks; He is able to teach us how to live a Heavenly

life here on this earth --- IF we’re willing to learn! Dr. Don Kuehle United Methodist, Retired

CELEBRATIONS 60th Wedding Anniversary Celebrated

Hamilton To Wed Cardwell

CARYLE AND PHYLLIS CARTER Caryle and Phyllis Carter of rural La Plata recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their family. The couple was married in Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 7, 1952. For a few years their first home was the “Niehieser” place just west of their present home southeast of La Plata in Macon County on Clover Ridge Angus Farm. Phyllis met Caryle when she carried water on horseback to the men working in the fields. In the early years they had chickens, hogs, dairy cows and sheep, along with registered Angus cattle. They raised corn, soybeans, and wheat and clover hay for crops. Caryle spent his “free time” scything roadsides to make them look neat. Times have changed; the trac-

tors and combines are bigger but the Angus cattle, crops and mowed roadsides are still part of the farming operation. Their children include Cathy Baker of Atlanta and Mike and Daryl Carter of La Plata. Grandchildren are Sharon Pennington, Daron Baker, and Aaron Baker of Atlanta; Jason Carter, Evan Carter and Jesse Carter of La Plata. Great grandchildren are Christina and Ashlea Pennington, Aislynn and Owen Baker and Bella and Brody Baker, all of Atlanta. Caryle and Phyllis are still actively farming. Caryle spends time on the fourwheeler checking cattle and Phyllis prepares lunch for the men. Both still enjoy life on the farm.

Welcome to La Plata R-II School District, home of the Bulldogs. Our mission is to “Educate, Equip, and Empower Students”. At La Plata R–II, we take great pride in providing a professional environment for all students and staff members. Students have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of programs and extracurricular activities. The district’s hope is that our students, families, and entire community will share in the pride that we feel for our school. Communication is one of the keys to success and with the start of a new school year there are changes to get acclimated with. As mentioned in my previous article La Plata JR/HS will implement an intervention period for students that are struggling academically and need extra support. This will be a period of 20 minutes in length where students will be able to be with their teacher to get extra support. Another program that will be implemented this year will be a ZAP Program. ZAP stands for zeros are not permitted. Students not turning in assignments or projects on the due date assigned by the instructor will report

to the Zap room during the twenty minutes as well. The students will have an opportunity to complete their assignments during this time. When students complete the assignment they will be able to leave the room and receive a maximum of 70% for the work finished. Assignments not finished in one week will result in mandatory detentions until the assignment s are completed. The reason the Zap program will be implemented is to impress upon students the importance of assignments. It is a tool used by the instructors to measure what the students have learned or need extra support. Please remember that if you have a question or concern, I am available to assist in any way possible. It is important to remember that the entire staff at La Plata R-II School District is available to assist students in a variety of ways. Parents/Guardians and patrons are always welcome to visit the school at any time. Please check in the school by stopping by the office. For your convenience the high school’s phone number is 660-332-7001. The districts website is laplata. k12.mo.us.

Environmental Grant From National FFA Organization Nationwide grant program supports local chapter to engage in servicelearning project A local FFA chapter has developed a plan to tackle an environmental issue in the community, and now it’s FFA members have received a national grant to bring their ideas to life. The Atlanta FFA Chapter in Atlanta received a $1556.00 grant from the National FFA Organization’s Living to Serve: Environmental Grant program and will begin their yearlong environmental project when the school year resumes. The Living to Serve: Environmental Grants are provided through funding from CSX, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The Atlanta project includes plans to increase their recycling project from collecting paper products to now include plastic bottles from the juice machine and at sporting events, purchase recycling containers for

classrooms and construct a recycling collection bin for the cafeteria. The items collected will be recycled by the Diversified Industries in Macon. The National FFA Organization makes grant funds available for FFA chapters to develop service-learning projects that impact environmental issues in their community. Chapters may apply for up to $2,000 to support yearlong service-learning projects focused on developing and implementing projects that address local environmental needs. The service-learning method challenged members to identify, research, develop and implement solutions to needs within their school or community. These projects illustrate the final line of the FFA motto (“Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve) by encouraging FFA members to unite in service within their communities. The LTS: Environmental Grants take

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The National FFA Organization operates under a federal charter granted by the 81st United States Congress and it is an integral part of public instruction in agriculture.
