The Grand Prairie Quilt Society met Wednesday, March 13, at the Stuttgart Public Library with eight members present. President Glenda Landreth opened the meeting with a thought for the day: “Being creative is not a hobby; it’s a way of life.” The March treasurer’s report and the February minutes were read and approved. STUDENT OF THE MONTH

ARKANSAS HISTORY

New Brass on Site

Matthew Lunsford of Dumas has been named the PCCUA DeWitt campus “Student of the Month” by English instructor Matt Forrester. Lunsford is currently on-track to enter the Nursing Program at PCCUA. Lunsford says that he has enjoyed his time at PCCUA. He says, “It is the perfect transition between high school and a four-year college. I have met many new friends and I have great instructors. I have learned many new life lessons, and I feel that I am prepared for whatever life throws at me.” One unusual hobby that Lunsford has is disc golf, sometimes referred to as Frisbee golf. Many people have never heard of it, but he learned about it when he was 14, and he has been playing ever since. He has been in a few tournaments and has won one trophy! According to Lunsford, “PCCUA DeWitt is a great place to begin a post high school education. The staff is great and I have never felt cheated or lost. It is a small campus so class is easy to find. There’s no reason that PCCUA DeWitt shouldn’t be on someone’s college list in this area.

Lt. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith assumed command of the Trans-Mississippi Department on March 7, 1863. The 39-year-old Florida native was an 1845 graduate of West Point and served credibly in the Mexican-American War. His current record showed he wasn’t performing too badly in the present war either, primarily in the states of Virginia and Kentucky. Although he didn’t fit the mold of a military genius, he was hardworking, brave and competent. He replaced Lt. Gen. Theophilus Holmes who was demoted to commanding the District of Arkansas, one of three sub-divisions of the Trans Mississippi. From his Little Rock headquarters’, Holmes had focused most of his attention on Arkansas while mostly ignoring the remaining vast territory entrusted to him. Gen. Smith, on the other hand, selected the centrally located city of Alexandria Louisiana for his headquarters. Before leaving Richmond, the Inspector General of the Confederacy had advised the new chief that supporting the defense of Vicksburg should be his first responsibility. Though he assumed command in Louisiana, he moved immediately to Arkansas in response to despondent outcries from Little Rock of confusion, disorder and demoralization in the army and civilian population. He reached the capitol city on March 17 where he was greeted by an over-elated Holmes who had never wanted the job in the first place. He reported to Richmond that things were not as bad as he had thought they were, though he acknowledged a want of system and order. Smith attributed the rapid return of absentees to their regiments to energetic measures taken by General Holmes. While anxious to give President Davis’s West Point friend as much credit as possible, the removal of Maj. Gen. Thomas Hindman at his own request and the return of Maj. Gen. Sterling Price were the underlying reasons for the soldiers fleshing out the ranks. Also the healing effects of the first balmy days of spring probably contributed as a morale factor. (Margaret Ross, Chronicles of Arkansas, Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock Arkansas, March 24, 1963.) Gen. Price had been the kingpin in Gen. Van Dorn’s army when led to Corinth after the battle of Pea Ridge a year ago in March. The return of this charismatic Missourian produced an instant bang among the Arkansas and Missouri soldiers. Also his return was hailed by the Western press and did much to dispel the gloom which had settled among the troops as a result of recent defeats in Arkansas. Though he was saddened to have left his loyal legions at Vicksburg, his enthusiasm was now growing at the prospect of invading Missouri and gaining the resource rich state for the Confederacy while simultaneously forcing the Federals to loosen their grip on the beleaguered city. Poor Gen. Smith. He entered his duties with despairing misgivings and soon declared his “vast empire” with undeveloped resources was non-sustaining and without means. (Robert L. Kirby, Kirby Smith’s Confederacy, Columbia University Press, 1972).

Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” And that even applies to the DeWitt City Council. Mayor Ralph Relyea informed council members at Monday night’s meeting that DeWitt’s proposal for the street repair grant discussed at last month’s meeting was approved by the state. The grant will allow the city to pave Maxwell Street from DeWitt Middle School to Highway 1, excluding the section paved last year. Since the grant was approved, the Council had to pass a resolution to accept the grant, which they did unanimously. The Council discussed Ordinance 580 which deals with posting street numbers on residences and businesses. “We have a very serious problem of house numbers not being displayed properly or at all on houses,” said Mayor Relyea. It is difficult for the fire department and patrolmen to find a particular house in an emergency if the house does not have a number displayed. Since more 911 calls are coming from cell phones as opposed to landlines, council members also voted unanimously to amend Ordinance 580 by striking the phrase “phone service” from the original ordinance. The amended ordinance will now read as follows: “The owner, tenant or occupant of each and every residence and commercial building located within the geographical confines of the City of DeWitt, Arkansas, shall cause to be displayed upon or about each such residence or other structure, the specific street address assigned to this residence or structure in conjunction with the establishment of an enhanced “9-1-1” system in Arkansas County.” Mayor Relyea said that citizens will be allowed a short period of time to make sure they are in compliance with the ordinance before law enforcement starts issuing citations for noncompliance.

Church Members Honored for Their Years of Service

WEEKLY SERMON

What Is It to Win a Soul? By Pastor William Wood

Isabella Riley and Verbena Tolbert were honored for their many years of service at the Mt. Zion MB Church in DeWitt. Riley has been with the church for over fifty years, and Tolbert has been with the church for over sixty years. Riley (left) and Tolbert (right) are pictured with Mt. Zion’s pastor, Rev. back from creating the universe and declared, “It was very good.” It’s the intrinsic goodness of God’s creation that proved that nature and the created order were worthy of study. Dr. Peter Hodgson, professor of nuclear physics at Oxford University said, “Christianity provided just those beliefs that are essential for science, and the whole moral climate encouraged its growth.” Historian Herbert Butterfield stated, “Science is a child of Christian thought.” It is a well-documented fact that for much of history Christianity and scientific study have been allies and not opponents. The list of prominent scientists who believe in God is impressive: 1) Nicholas Copernicus, 1473-1543, is the father of modern astronomy by suggesting on mathematical grounds that the earth traveled around the sun. He held office in the Polish church as Canon at a cathedral. 2) Galileo, 1564-1642, in spite of persecution, was

a devout Catholic Christian. He said, “There are two big books, the book of nature and the book of supernature, the Bible.” 3) The greatest scientist of all time, Sir Isaac Newton, 642-1727, distinguished himself not only in the discovery of the law of gravity, but in optics, astronomy and calculus. He believed in the inspiration of the Bible and wrote religious books as well as scientific books. He believed no sciences were better attested than the religion of the Bible. 4) Robert Boyle, who gave his name to “Boyle’s Law,” was a devout Christian: 5) Louis Pasteur, who developed pasteurization, had faith. 6) James Simpson, who paved the way with anesthetics for painless surgery, when asked, “What do you think is the most important discovery of your life?” replied, “The most important discovery I ever made was when I

The Lutheran Churches of South Arkansas County Invite You To Worship:

We cannot say too much about the winning of a soul to the Lord! No other subject is as important as this, and perhaps none other is as neglected. We are born here on earth to be able to choose where we are going when we die. So what is the real meaning of winning a soul to the Lord? Is it just an emotional experience that produces streaming eyes and flowing tears? Is it only an impulse to turn over a new leaf in our book of Life, and by setting our mind, trying to do better? Is it promises we make when our emotions have been stirred by the music in a church service or by the preaching of coming judgment? All these things may happen when a soul is saved, but the real work has not been done until God’s spirit moves on the scene and supernaturally changes our heart and mind! It often happens that converts that are born in excitement die when the excitement is over. They are like some insects that come out on a warm day, but die when the sun goes down. A real, true zeal for God, brought about by the New Birth, will be consistent with common sense and reason. Raving, ranting and some kind of fanaticism are the Products of another zeal, not according to the word of God. So what is the Process by which a soul is Led to the Lord? One of its main operations is instructing the Person, by the Gospel, so that he may know the truth of God! Instruction by the Gospel is the starting Place for All real work that will change the human mind. Jesus said, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations… teaching them to observe all things, whatsoever I have commanded you, and Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Teaching begins the work of saving a soul and finishes it too! The Gospel, according to the Bible, is “Come unto me, incline your ear, hear me, and your soul shall Live.” It is our duty then, to give the wandering, lost souls something that is worth listening to. We are to Preach the Gospel to every creature, and that is not done unless we teach them what the Bible says about being born into this world Lost and separated from God! How can we know we need to be saved until we know we were born Lost? And how can we know we were born Lost unless we hear and believe the Gospel that declares it? And how can we hear it without a Preacher, and how can they Preach unless they have been saved and then called to Preach? And so we say to you who may not know you are Lost, the same thing Paul said to the Romans, “ Wherefore, by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death Passed upon all men for that ALL have sinned.” (Rom. 5:12) But we will not Leave you in this great darkness, I will tell you something else that the great Apostle Paul said. Incline you ear to this, because it is something worth listening to! Rom. 5:18 – “Therefore, by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation, even so by the Righteousness of one (Jesus Christ) the free Gift of Righteousness came upon ALL men unto Justification of Life.” If we do not teach men the scriptures we may shout “Believe, Believe,” but what are they to Believe? We may stand and say to them, “Escape,” but from what? We may exhort them to “Repent,” but we must teach them The Law so they know what to Repent of! We may quote scripture and tell them to “Come out of Babylon”(Rev. 18:2). But we must teach them what Babylon is! We are not to try and save men out of the dark without telling them what darkness is. We must Preach Gospel doctrines plainly and simply, trusting our Lord to shine His Light on it, wheresoever He will. This Gospel has in itself the Power to convict us of our sins then cause us to hate them! Our salvation is not yet sealed, unless we hate our sins! A Person whose soul is saves has a Repentant Heart! Amen.

Through the efforts of these volunteer committees, DU is able to pursue its mission of conserving, enhancing and restoring North America’s wetlands. The Stuttgart chapter made the Top 100 list as one of the organization’s best fundraising chapters over the last year. The Stuttgart chapter earned a spot in the Top 100 out of the more than 2,700 DU chapters nationwide. DU’s event fundraising system has become a model for other conservation organizations around the world and has funded a significant portion of the more than 13 million acres of wetlands and associated habitat DU has conserved since 1937. “DU chapters across the country are showing that the future of waterfowl populations and the wetlands that filter our drinking water and protect us from flooding are important to them and to their communities,” Newman said. “The more money we raise, the more habitat we can conserve and the closer we are to preserving our waterfowl hunting heritage. I would like to personally thank all our Top 100 chapters for their achievement and look forward to seeing them among our distinguished chapters next year.” Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, DU has conserved more than 13 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever.

HELP WANTED

DeWitt School District Nominated for Monsanto Fund Grant

BY VALENYA FRANKS EDITOR editor@dewitt-ee.com

The DeWitt School District has applied and been nominated for a $10,000 Monsanto Fund Grant. The Monsanto Fund invests money to strengthen math and science education in rural communities. However, the district needs more help to ensure it receives the grant. The number of nominations the district receives strengthens the application. Those eligible to nominate the district must be at least twenty-one years of age and actively engaged in

farming a minimum of 250 acres of corn, soybeans, and/or cotton. Eligible entrants can also include those who own 40 acres of open field vegetables, or at least 10 acres of vegetables grown in protected culture. Entrants must reside in eligible counties where a minimum of 30,000 acres of corn, soybeans, cotton and/or vegetables are planted each year. For more information or to nominate the DeWitt School district, visit http://www.americasfarmers.com/growruraleducation/. At the recent DeWitt

School Board meeting, it was revealed that the district is still fighting with the cafeteria fund, being two payments behind and $20,000 down due to equipment replacements. However, the district has seen an increase in enrollment with 482 students at DES, 81 at GES, 324 at DMS and 394 at DHS. This increase will help with the first and third quarter average, which decides the district’s budget. The 2013-2014 calendar will basically remain the same as last year’s with addition of a mandatory four-day training

in June for teachers that will be geared towards Common Core. The spring break schedule for the 2013-2014 school year was questioned, in which the board was informed that state law mandates that spring break must be scheduled the 38th week from the first full week in July. This means that spring break will generally fall on the second to last or last week in March. There was a request from the senior class to use the high school cafeteria for prom on April 13, which was approved by the board. There was

also a request from the Civil Group in Gillett to used the old Gillett school building for their annual Gillett Heritage Days, May 3 and 4, which was also approved. A summer painting project has been proposed to spruce up the DES, DMS and DHS buildings and campuses. It was stated that it has been eight years since the elementary school has been painted, and the awnings and blue trim at the high school could use some touching up. The school district will take bids throughout the state from paint-

COMMUNITY NEWS News In &Around Gillett Gary Kestner Elected President of Equipment Dealers Association By Darla Grantham Shoes still being collected As you clean out your closets for spring, remember the shoe drive still being held. Old shoes get a second life when they are sold to exporters and recyclers for resale or materials for new items. The money is used to purchase welldrilling rigs, water filtration systems, and other supplies to bring clean, fresh water to those in need. Tie the shoestrings together or wrap a rubber band around them and drop them off at First Baptist Church, or call Darla Grantham for pickup. Men’s Ministry Cook-Off Brother’s Keeper’s Ministry of First Baptist Church had its first annual chili/gumbo cookoff Saturday, March 16, 2013, with Randy Grantham taking 1st place prize in chili, and John Trites taking 1st place in gumbo. Peggy James, R.J. and Hannah Hackney and Gunner judged the competition between the 10 men participating. Family and friends joined in afterwards for dinner and

dessert. Leisure Club Holds March Meeting The Leisure Club met in the adult Sunday school room of the Gillett United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 12. Eleven people were present. After playing several games of Bingo and selecting prizes, the hostesses, Dorothy Connelly and Muff Christine, served delicious refreshments. Connelly, Leisure Club coordinator, had each person present choose a piece of paper from a basket to determine the door prize winner. Most of the papers ranged from “You’re a loser,” “It wasn’t worth much anyway,” “You’re luck’s as bad as mine,” “Sorry, better luck next time,” to “Boo hoo hoo.” Margaret Carlow selected the winning slip of paper that read “Lucky You.” The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 9, in the Adult Sunday School room of Gillett United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with Dorothy Faye Dixon and Sue Berry as hostesses. Come join us and enjoy the fellowship.

At the Arkansas County Quorum Court meeting, it was revealed the Records of Preservation was planning to honor donors and volunteers sometime this year in the form of a seminar at the Agricultural Museum in Stuttgart. The Records of Preservation also received a $103 donation in memory of Gail Milliken’s motherin-law. Two mass e-waste col-

lections have been scheduled for Arkansas County. The Carroll Lester Memorial Recycling Center has been a huge success since its opening in December 2012. While it’s still working on an ewaste tub, over three tons of plastic, paper and glass have been collected since its opening. The city of DeWitt has recycled eight to ten tons of paper. The more recycling a city has, the more money that city will save on trash due to a reduction in the waste stream. As a result, this leads to less trips to the Pine Bluff waste management plant. An ordinance appropriating funds of $1,000 to Bellpoint Storm Pods bank account was brought before the court where it was passed and approved. A resolution was also passed to reapply for a grant to help fund voting enhancement such as digital voting and electronic poll booths. It is a yearly grant to help with the election process. Judge Cox mentioned two bills that were going through the House. The first is the 911 bill. It was originally proposed to add thirty-five cents to cell phone bills to help

with 911 funding. However, it was decided that forty cents would be added to cell phone bills, and the fund would be split between 911 funding and Connect AR. Connect AR is working to bring high speed or broadband internet to rural areas. $17 million of the money from the added forty cents on cell phone bills will go to Connect AR to increase DSL and broadband in rural areas. About $2 million will go into the 911 fund with the funds being split between counties. Small counties will receive $40,000 for 911 funding, medium counties will receive $28,000 and large counties will receive $15,000. The second house bill Judge Cox mentioned was about ADEQ (Arkansas Department of Environment Quality). If someone from ADEQ writes a ticket for code violation and an engineer has to be hired to fix the violation, the bill suggests that ADEQ provides the engineer. This is to ensure that the correct plans are drawn up the first time, which will shorten the amount of time it takes to fix the violation.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Crockett’s Bluff, Ethel & St. Charles News By Margaret Aycock Last Wednesday, March 6, J.W. & I had to travel to Monticello for my appointment with my eye doctor. While in Monticello, we visited with several friends and even got to tour my old home place and visited a little while with the new owner, Crystal Hart. It made me homesick. Then we went to lunch with Danny & Andra Brown, very dear friends of ours. At Dr. Claycomb’s office, we met another good friend, Christine Kellum. She even came home with me and stayed until Saturday morning when Shirley Jackson and I took Christine back to Monticello. I also attended a birthday party Saturday afternoon for Louise Childers, honoring her on her 80th birthday. Her children hosted the party at the DeWitt Community Center at the DeWitt Park. Bro. Charles Floyd and wife, Shirley Jackson of DeWitt and Bob and Ida Newkirk of St. Charles attended the John Conlee concert

in Stuttgart, Saturday, March 9. Jo Alla Nutt of DeWitt, formally of Ethel, visited a while with J. W. amd me Friday evening. The committee for the up-keep of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel is requesting donations for the maintenance and mowing of the cemetery for the year 2013. Due to the increase in size and mowing expense, our cost has escalated. We appreciate the loyalty you have shown to the cemetery up-keep in the past and trust that you will continue to support it for our loved ones who have passed on. Please send donations or memorials to: Jo Alla Nutt 121 West 14th St. DeWitt, AR 72042 Thank you for your support! The committee for the mowing and maintenance of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery for 2013 is taking bids at this time. They should be submitted no later than March 25, 2013. We are sorry if this is a little soon, but one of the members has

6th in a Series: Questions About the Christian Faith

u CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6A

Thank you to everyone who attended the appreciation service. - Isabella Riley

“How do cells reproduce and how does DNA control and dictate the processes within our bodies?” “When was the earth made?” “When did creation begin?” On the other hand, religion and the Bible address the “Who” and “Why” of creation and nature. “Who created the world?” Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” And “Why did God create in the first place?” Science attempts to answer how some things work. But the greatest scientific research and discovery in the world will never answer the “Who” or the “Why” question. That’s the realm of faith. The Hebrew psalmist stated it most beautifully and concisely for us all: “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who have pleasure in them. Full of honor and majesty is His work.” Psalm 111: 2,3. In the

New Testament the Apostle Paul observed “Ever since the creation of the world, God’s invisible nature, namely His eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made” Romans 1: 20. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (Psalm 19: 1). God has revealed Himself in creation and supremely in Jesus Christ as witnessed to in the Scriptures. Science is the study of God’s general revealing of Himself in creation. Biblical theology is the study of God’s special revealing of Himself in Jesus and the Scriptures. Every scientific breakthrough, be it in medical science, physics, biology, astronomy, etc., only serves to give glory to the brilliance, power and design of our unseen God and Creator, our Heavenly Father, “who made the heavens and

the earth.” Science and the Bible complement each other rather than contradict one another.

Is There a Conflict Between Science and Christianity? discovered Jesus Christ.” 7) Albert Einstein, the greatest physicist of the 20th century, was Jewish and said, “God created the universe by imagination.” The evidence of these persons’ lives and accomplishments clearly establish that a Christian believer does not have to check his or her brain at the door when we enter the Church. 2. Science and Scripture Don’t Contradict Each Other. There are more disagreements and apparent contradictions within science itself than between science and the Christian faith. The essence of scientific study is based on observation of quantifiable experiences and results. When it comes to nature and the created order, science attempts to answer the “how” and “when” questions: “How does the earth revolve around the sun?” “How does rain fall from the sky?”
