Term 3, 2015

Term 3 is drawing to a close. Major projects are done and marking is underway. Just in time to start the next Year 12 course!!! The TAS Leadership Network has been launched with the leaders coming together for a two day induction in Sydney. There is still plenty of space for teachers to join up so if you know or are someone in need of some mentoring in your TAS learning area, join up using the link on page 3. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge and thank the leaders for coming forward and being so enthusiastic about the project. STEM education continues to be in the news and a national strategy is being developed. If there are good things in STEM happening at your school, let me know so we can share your success in this newsletter. Don’t forget that SchoolBiz is our main method of communicating information to teachers and schools. Please check it weekly for news and any opportunities for professional learning.

Industrial Arts Machine Tools contract released Two copies of the Industrial Arts Machine Tools Contract has been sent to every high school in NSW. Safety is a critical aspect of TAS subjects and procedures must be revisited regularly. Please ensure you consult this document before purchasing equipment and follow the procedures provided. Following these procedures will protect both you and your students. “Principals are advised that use of this contract is mandated and is specifically excluded from alternative methods of procurement including the Local Schools, Local Decisions Policy purchasing arrangements. This is to prevent substitution with equipment that does not meet DoE safety requirements and prevent purchases from alternate suppliers. Schools must not purchase any machine tools other than those available on Contract DECAM13-15.” Soft copies of the document are available from the Asset Management Website:

ROBOCUP RoboCupJunior is a project-oriented educational initiative that sponsors local, regional and international robotic events for young students. It is designed to introduce RoboCup to primary and secondary school students, as well as undergraduates who do not have the resources to get involved in the senior leagues. A number of our public schools participated this year and did very well. Congratulations to all those teachers and students who competed. Two teams from Camden Haven High School took out equal 3rd place in the GENII Soccer and 3rd place in Open rescue. Secondary rescue was won by Crestwood High School and Junee High School came in second place while Moruya High School achieved second in the Open Soccer. Fort Street High School dominated Lightweight Soccer, taking out first, second and third places. Congratulations also goes to the public primary schools Lindfield Public School (second and third Primary Rescue), Mullion Creek Public School and Hamilton South Public School (First and second respectively in Primary Dance). Some of these teams are now fundraising to attend the National competition in Adelaide at the end of September.

Animals in Schools Updated information on the Animals in schools website.

Updates on sheep and goats Vaccinations: Veterinarians can provide advice on vaccination regimes that are appropriate to the age and class of sheep. The 5 in 1 vaccine is a popular core vaccine used for sheep. The vaccination program for sheep should commence at marking time, a booster given four weeks later and then annually. While the administration of subcutaneous vaccinations are a category 3 activity the exception is for vaccination to prevent Ovine Johne’s Disease (OJD). Students must not administer the Gudair vaccine as it is harmful if it is accidentally injected to humans and great care must be taken to ensure the correct administration site on the animal. It must be administered subcutaneously, high on the neck, below the base of the ear. Further information is available at OJD fact sheet and the Gudair vaccine – User safety information The address is: http://nswschoolanimals.com/ There will be redirect placed on the old site so that you will automatically be sent to the new site.
