Jeannine McHaney Jeannine McHaney joined the Texas Tech faculty in 1966 and in addition to being a professor of physical education and the director of women’s intramural sports, she served as Tech’s first volleyball coach for nine years. The Women’s Athletic Department was established in 1975 with Jeannine as athletics director. She remained one of the top administrators in Tech Athletics through many changes in the department always fighting for opportunities for women for the rest of her life. Long considered the driving force behind women’s athletics at Texas Tech, Jeannine passed away in 1994. Each year a student-athlete from each women’s program is selected as a Jeannine McHaney Scholar and one of these is then crowned the McHaney Scholar Student-Athlete of the Year each year at the annual TECHspy awards. The award winner exemplifies the standards established by Jeannine McHaney in the areas of academic achievement and athletic excellence as well as service to the community and the university.
