the

Dear viewers and fashionistas: It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you Jamaica's first official collective Fashion, Lifestyle & Destination catalogue: “Du’Look” (The Look). Du’Look represents a bold new beginning for our local fashion industry. Its primary objective is to provide our fashion designers and industry professionals with another medium, where their talents and creativity can be on full display, both locally and overseas. One of our biggest asset as a country, is our people. We have conquered many different areas in sports, business, music and fashion just to name a few. Also, our rich heritage has made us world reknowned as a destination hot spot and thus we have used our greatest assets to bring to you a bold and ambitious project to display some of these attributes. As we embark on our 50th year of Independence, I am extremely proud and would like to take this opportunity to thank Danielle Croskill (Miss Jamaica World 2011), Shakira Martin (Miss Jamaica Universe 2011) and Chantal Zaky (Miss Jamaica Universe 2012). My wonderful production team for their hard work and sacrifice which has made this dream a reality. Thanks guys!...but this is just the first step. Thanks to all the participating designers, photographers, models, make-up artists, stylists, friends and well wishers. Also, I gratefully acknowledge the advertisers who came on board to support us, thank you. Please relax and take your time to carefully browse through the exciting pages of Du’Look Jamaica. Look out for the Augmented Reality pages (the ones with the video icon). The Du’Look team went to great lengths to make our first edition as visually stimulating and as practical as possible in showcasing some of the best of Jamaican fashion. Fort Charles, built in 1656, is the oldest fort in Jamaica. Originally named Fort Cromwell, it was renamed in 1662 to honour Charles II, restored King of England. The original armament of 10 guns was increased to 36 in 1667 and to 104 in 1765. When built, the fort was almost completely surrounded by water, but the area around it eventually silted up. This fort, one of six located in Port Royal, served to guard the entrance to the Kingston Harbour. It was the only one of Port Royal’s forts to survive the 1692 earthquake. Damaged, it was reconstructed in 1699 by Colonel Christian Lilly, chief engineer of Jamaica.

The Historic

Fort Charles Today with the warships and the soldiers gone, Port Royal has become a quiet fishing village, but it is one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Jamaica - let it never be forgotten that for over 200 years, Port Royal was England's biggest naval base in the Caribbean, so strong and powerful, that no enemy dared attack it. Hope Gardens by Jennifer Williams

T

he gardens are the largest public green space in the Kingston metropolitan region, and are home to Jamaica's most popular collection of endemic and exotic botanical collections. By the main entrance is the Cassia siamea grove, which was planted in 1907, and the other mini-gardens within the park - notably the cacti garden, with its rare varietals; the bougainvillea walk with its magnificent explosions of tropical colours; the annual gardens, with numerous species of exotic flowers; the sunken gardens and the lily pond.

The gardens were established in 1873 on a section of land from the estate of Major Richard Hope, one of the original English colonisers who arrived with the invading force of Penn and Venables. It is the largest public green space in the Kingston Metropolitan Region. In the 17th and 18th centuries Hope was a sugar estate and one of the first where water (from the Hope River) was used to turn estate mills. It also includes a Palm Avenue where sago palms are among the oldest living trees, a cacti garden, a bougainvillea walk, a forest and lily pond. Other attractions include a zoo, a lake, a water fountain and even a poet's corner. For more read, please visit: http://www.visitjamaica.com/attractions/hope-botanical-gardens.aspx

Fashiontips... Make the most of your clothing investment, these suggestions can help guide you along your way, happy shopping!!!

Accessorise with style

Remember the basics

Buy what works for you!

Never try to build a wardrobe around the “trend of the moment”. When the trend passes, you'll look dated. Purchase basic building pieces to build your wardrobe and you'll be able to mix and match pieces to create lots of different looks with minimal investment. Suits and separates can form the foundation of a great working wardrobe. Single and double-breasted long-sleeved blazers with matching skirts for women or pants for men are essential basics. Save the novelty items for your casual days at home, or for accessory pieces.

When buying clothing there are few things you need to consider, take for instance your work environment. Do not waste your money buying two-piece work suits if you work in a warehouse. Take your job responsibilities into account when purchasing clothing for your career. Never buy clothing items that you will not feel comfortable in, it’s going to make you frustrated and that is wasted money!

Scarves, jewellery, pins, ties, pocket squares, hosiery, shoes and hats can transform ordinary clothing into something extraordinary. Every wardrobe needs a certain investment in accessories. Determine whether your colouring is cool or warm and let that guide you in choosing accessories, especially metal jewellery. If your colouring is warm, gold will emphasize the glow in your skin. If your colouring is cool, choose more silver, platinum or white gold to emphasize the contrast of your skin. Combining smart accessories with a basic wardrobe ensures you'll always look coordinated and polished, not thrown-together or haphazard.

Buy the right size for right now Although most of us dream to be the size of toothpicks 90% of us are not and will never be. Nothing is wrong with your size! Don't get hung up on what size the clothing is tagged, get hung up on proper fit! If the article of clothing feels tight, pulls or seems stressed at the seams, it will not last and it will make you look heavier in the process. Buy clothing that fits you well, it will not only make you look better but last longer.

Stick to your best colors Have a professional Colour Analysis done to determine what the most flattering colors are for you. By sticking to those colors, you'll be assured that you'll always have mix and match capability and you'll always look great! One of the foundations of Capsule Wardrobing is the selection of 3 basic colors to build a wardrobe on. Make sure they are the right ones for you!

What texture? If you want a dewy dewy,, fresh-faced finish then a light, liquid formula is best. Look for words such as sheer and illuminating and you’re set for a glowing complexion. Expert tip: After applying your foundation go easy on loose powder or this will flatten the ‘glow’ you’ve just put on”

What shade? All makeup artists agree that you should colour match your foundation along your jawline - the right shade should disappear into your skin seamlessly seamlessly.. “A really good foundation will feel like you’re not wearing any your skin should look like you’ve just stepped out of the spa. Expert tip: If your shade is too dark it will look orange and if it’s too light it will look ashy . Is your skin tone cool or warm? Select a shade that matches your skin tone. Cooler skin tones have more red undertones and warmer skin tones have more yellow undertones. Yellow-toned Yellow-toned foundations look the most natural on all skin tones, however if you're very very fair go for a cooler shade.

How to apply? Many women think foundation is to cover imperfections so they use far too much resulting in a cakey texture. Foundation’s only true purpose it to even out skin tone – not to erase ever everyy pore or freckle! Fingers or brush? Always use fingers when applying foundation. This technique warms up the product and makes it look more natural on the skin. The heat from your hands means that the foundation will become more like your own skin. Expert tip: If you feel the foundation is too heavy for your skin you can apply with a damp sponge as this will make it sheerer. sheerer

BritJam is a seven-day spring festival package of concerts, parties and cultural excursions to local attractions, and is patronized by hundreds of British/European & American tourists, many of whom are 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of the migrants from the 1960s. In the last three years, BritJam has been an important channel for young Diasporians to visit the country of their roots to connect with their past and to establish pathways for the future. This Spring Festival has differentiated itself from similar products by the balanced offering of contemporary cultural features alongside education in Jamaican norms, mores and traditions.

Hair Grooming Tips... 3.

10 Hair Rules You're Probably Breaking

Play hot-and-cold as you dry. When using a round brush to dry your hair in sections, start from the roots and dry all the way to the ends, letting the brush linger at the tips of your strands. Let your hair cool off like this on its own for five seconds, then repeat on another section. Alternating between heat and cool-down time helps set your style, and your blowout will have more body.

4.

Whether you’re after gorgeous color, a bombshell blowout, or overall superhealthy locks, stylists know the tricks to get you there. Here, they reveal their top must-try tips.

Do an at-home glaze between color appointments. Glazes fill holes and rough spots in your hair cuticles, helping smooth your locks and put moisture back into your hair. This keeps your color shiny and bright so it lasts longer and look better. Plus, you can snag an at-home kit from your local drugstore.

5. Use rollers for high-volume. For sex-kitten lift, blow out your locks until they’re dry. Then, section off the hair on top of your head - between your temples and all the way back to the crown of your hair. Divide that section into three smaller sections vertically (as if you were making a mohawk), and wrap each in a 2-inch velcro hair roller. Let your hair sit like this for 30 minutes, and then unwrap your strands, lightly comb them out, and spray for hold.

6. Drop the towel. Keeping wet strands wrapped in a towel for a half-hour as you do your make-up will just cause frizz! The roughness of the cotton forces your hair cuticles open, making them more likely to go everywhich-way. Instead, squeeze out excess water as soon as you’re out of the shower, then let your hair air-dry for five or ten minutes before blow drying.

7. Apply products 10 minutes before you style. Whether you’re curling, straightening, or whatevering, applying product 10 minutes in advance helps it fully absorb into your strands so you get all of its benefits and more bang for your buck.

8.

Wrap, don’t clamp, your hair for quick curls. When using a curling iron, you don’t need to fasten your locks to the barrel. Wrap sections around the iron and hold in place for about 10 seconds to score the same soft, sexy curls.

9. Use spray bottles as your new lazy-day.

Designer: T&T Fashions Photography: Marlon James Model: Jameela Geddes

1. Find a shampoo that lathers less. Sudsy doesn’t necessarily mean clean - sometimes, it means the opposite. Shampoos that lather too much are often overloaded with moisturizing products, which can leave build-up in your hair, making it look and feel dirtier quicker. So opt for a sulfate-free formula.

2. Give your locks a burst of cold. Before you hop out of the shower, turn the cold water on for a second and quickly rinse it through your strands. It helps seal the cuticle, adding a sleek finish to your locks. 14

&

If you wake up and your locks are totally flat or grungy from the day before, just spray the top layer of your hair until damp, and then use a big barrel round brush (2 inches or more) to blow your locks dry. You’ll score high volume on that top layer, and since it’s freshly blown out, you’ll create the illusion of all-over smooth hair.

10. Use dry shampoo a different way. Instead of waiting until your locks need an dirt-fighting pick-me-up, apply a dab of dry shampoo to your roots immediately after you wash and dry them. Though your hair’s already clean, the barrier will stave off the debris and oil your strands will collect throughout the day before it hits. Bonus: It also gives you killer volume.

The story of the Two Sisters Cave Located in the Hellshire Hills, St. Catherine. Each cave has a large sink hole, which contains fresh water. It is possible that these reservoirs served as sources of fresh water for the Tainos. This natural cavern and the tunnel beneath are interconnected with many other caverns and tunnels over this whole limestone area which extends for miles in all directions. The cave contains a petroglyph carving of a face which is about seven hundred years old. Based on the fact that the Tainos drew effigies of themselves and their gods as a sign of their respect for their gods and that the caves contain no evidence of being the homes of any Tainos, it is believed that they were mainly used for ceremonial purposes. The Two Sisters Cave is a twin cave system, believed to be some 200,000 years old. The cave was formerly a single cave but following the great earthquake of 1692

(which destroyed Port Royal) the roof of the cave collapsed, leaving two smaller open-air caves separated by a huge pile of rubble. The caves are both underwater, their bases are lined with large pools of crystal clear blue water. The rocky ledges overhanging the pools are home to swallows and fish eating bats which can be seem darting about above the water. There are two theories as to how the Two Sisters Cave got its name; one is that two slave sisters escaped from a nearby plantation and, tired from running, stopped at the cave and rested. They later heard their pursuers coming after them and, lacking the strength to run and not able to face returning to the plantation, they leapt to their deaths in the waters of the cave. Their spirits are said to haunt the cave to this day. The other theory is that Two Sisters Cave is named so because it appears to be two very similar caves next to each other.
