From the Editor When was the last time that someone tried to bring you down? How often have you acted as though people’s negativity has had no impact on you? In this crazy thing we call life; there will always be someone that wants to bring you down. There will always be someone that wants you to fail, and there will always be someone that finds joy in your downfall. We all have a breaking point! Don’t fret; it’s a natural part of life. We’ve all had a moment or two in which we’ve wanted to give up, to throw in the towel or to allow someone else to walk over us. The important lesson throughout all of those experiences is, we cannot allow someone that did not give us our joy, take it away. The sooner you learn to deal with your haters, the better off you will be. Trust, those naysayers are not going anywhere anytime soon and the quicker you learn to accept that, the quicker you can use them as a form of motivation and allow everything else to fall into place.

rying to find your true love or just dating in general can be hard for anyone, especially for those in the lesbian community. You can’t always tell someone’s sexual orientation just by looking at them unless a female has the words “lesbian” or “bisexual” tattooed on their forehead. Often times the fear of rejection or of offending the person that you’re interested in may stop you from being flirtatious or asking them out on a date. Finding love the old fashion way may be difficult but not impossible. There are gay clubs, bars, and hangouts but to be honest that scene can get old pretty fast, and depending on your location can be hard to come by. That is partly why online dating has become so popular over the years, and now with such a wide variety of web sites to choose from people are finding it more convenient to just stay home and search for their soul mate using the Internet.

By now I’m sure we have all seen the TV show „Catfish” at least once, or at the very least are familiar with the term and its definition: Someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or other social media sites to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age with all of the high tech equipment we have available that someone would allow themselves to fall victim to such a scheme, but truth be told it can easily happen to anyone, so here’s a few tips to help prevent it from happening to you:

The ideology that Fred Phelps and his followers followed was fueled by hate and regardless of how much sense it may make at the time, responding with hate will only cause you to mirror his actions. Regardless of what you believe in, we all have to answer for our actions on this earth, be it answering to yourself or to a higher being...

The founder of Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps passed away at 11:15 p.m. on March 9, 2014. Both Westboro and Phelps attained notoriety for their horrendous and hateful anti-gay protests at public events and military funerals, in which the number of people devastated are endless.

MAY 2014

Phelps & The Westboro Baptist Church History: Though he was dubbed as the head of America’s most hated family, ironically, Phelps was a defense attorney although he ended up being disbarred some time later. If this was not surprising enough, not only was he a prized lawyer at the time, probably the most bizarre aspect of his past is that at one point, he was actually a civil rights activist. That’s right! At the climax of the Civil Rights Movement, he advocated for anti-discrimination cases. He won many of the cases that he picked up in which he gained even more attention with various Civil Rights Organizations. So how does a man that advocated for anti-discrimination cases become the same man that can cause such harm, supposedly all in the name of God & religion?

Picketing: The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) claimed to have been involved in actions and activities against gay individuals since 1991 which it fought to cease homosexual activities at Gage Park, a park close in proximity to the church’s’ headquarters. However, by 2001, Phelps was quoted saying that the WBC had held over 40 pickets per week for the previous 10 years. Not all of these actions involved the gay community, some were against military service men and women, while others dealt with celebrity funerals and other public events.

Legal Action: Many were devastated and outraged by the actions of the WBC community and complaints led by the family of Marine Lance Corporal, Matthew A. Snyder finally led to new laws being enacted by President Bush. However, this legislation only led to Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius signing into law

a bill that required only a 150-foot no-picketing zone around funerals. On the good side, this legislation led to other states enacting similar laws and even more states considering it.

The Aftermath: It’s to be expected that many have and will for some time continue to celebrate his passing, but is it right? In short, no. Is it understandable? Probably. But let me fill you in on why it’s wrong. Greeting hate with hate is only living by and eye for an eye; a moral code in which no one wins. The ideology that Fred Phelps and his followers followed was fueled by hate and regardless of how much sense it may make at the time, responding with hate will only cause you to mirror his actions. Regardless of what you believe in, we all have to answer for our actions on this earth, be it answering to yourself or to a higher being, no matter how it is spun, it just simply isn’t worth it. Instead of continuing to pour fuel on that fire, we need to learn how to defend ourselves with kindness, understanding, and in times when dealing with the WBC and other like-minded individuals and organizations, learn how to turn the other cheek. Sadly there is something called freedom of speech in the United States. Although Phelps attained notoriety for his actions, he was not the first and surely will not be the last to spew hatred into this world.

If we cannot learn anything from this man, then how will our actions differ when the next one comes along? hat do you call an artist that’s so versatile, they do not fit into any one genre alone? We like to call her QueenEarth. Yes, that’s right—QueenEarth—all one word. The name alone is enough to catch anyone’s attention, but add in her music and it’s the perfect recipe for love and good vibes.

Earlier in The Journey: Destined for greatness from early on, QueenEarth was given the moniker from a random stranger circa 2002 in Charlotte, NC. Dressing a tad bit more feminine back then, she walked into an open mic session with a hippy skirt and head wrap on and was instantly approached by a random man. “You look like QueenEarth…I bet you play guitar, listen to Jill Scott, spit poetry,” needless to say, the gentleman was on point. When she arrived back to college in PA, “QueenEarth” became the perfect joke for a good laugh between friends. The name stuck and the rest is history, well not actually, but we’re sure you get the point. Her earlier performances ranged from singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow during her kindergarten graduation to forming girl groups with her friends in school. In the beginning nervousness was an issue; however, much like with other artists, the nervousness on stage was something that became easier with time and practice. Beautiful still, is the wonderful transition that took hold of QueenEarth and tur-

Adult Contempory Music has taken QueenEarth from the heart of Baltimore, DC, all over the DMV, to upstate NY and NYC via Brooklyn, Pittsburgh/ Wheeling, and California. Still, she believes the best trips are still ahead of her as she hopes to begin playing overseas within the next two years. To see where music has taken her on a spiritual level, check out the QueenEarth Q&A session. QueenEarth’s album, Adult Contemporary, dropped in August 2013 and is available via iTunes. Making this release so special is the blood, sweat, and tears that went into creating it. “I’ve been working on this project since I left my first open mic in Baltimore. Some of these songs were started before grad school. Even the song order is symbolic.” She yearned to have a project that people could enjoy and play in its entirety. “To me, this has been a work that will define my self discovery, as a lesbian and as an artist. I sing, rap, beat-box, and play guitar. It’s a fun project and I can’t wait for folks to take a listen.” Check out Adult Contemporary now and capture QueenEarth’s at the beginning of adulthood. “This is Chapter 1. You’ll need to know it to understand the sequels.”

A New Day QueenEarth has since relocated to beautiful San Jose, California which has been both rewarding and challenging in its own right. Surely she could have chosen to move to the Bay Area or to San Francisco; however, she yearned to provide an outlet for the LGBT community, especially the Queer People of Color (QPOC) in the South Bay area.

QueenEarth question & answer With your growth as an artist and everywhere that music has taken you, what does the name QueenEarth mean to you now? Now as QueenEarth, I strive to be a multifaceted globe trotter. I hope to continue to grow as a whole, global, artist. I also hope to get to travel and touch people, all over the world, with my songs and stories. I am an earthy Taurus, and it’s not unusual to find me barefoot and walking through the grass or on a blanket outside. Being outside is the best part of my job. No more long hours behind a desk. Most recently, people have been shortening my name to call me “Queen.” That baffles me! I don’t care if people know what I look like, as much as I want them to listen to my lyrics and music. That’s why I, so often, appear as a cartoon. I am still defining QE. Right now, I feel she embodies soulful confidence.

When I play your album, I feel your love for music. When did you fall in love with it? I fell in love with music and the idea of performing when I visited the open mic venues in the DMV to get off campus. Eventually, I could sing in front of people and now, it’s one of my favorite things to do. I’m still nervous, and I sing with my eyes closed, but it is fulfilling and every time I perform, I feel like it is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.

QA

Do you try to convey a message through your music, if so what message are you trying to get through? I don’t have an overarching message in my music. My goal is to be authentic. I hope that if folks are listening to my lyrics, they can see that I can be a mirror, for other LGBT youth, other dreamers, and other folks who can identify with my stories.

Most musicians have an unequaled bond with music, so tell us, what does music mean to you? Music is my memories, my joy, my triumphs, my love stories. My earliest memories involve Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson songs. I tie so much of life to songs that were out when I was dating someone, graduating, driving on a certain road. I seek to capture moments and seasons with my songs. Music is a gift to me and with it, I am able to write songs and touch lives. That is the ultimate gift. More than a tangible album that someone can buy, I am creating songs that could be passed on and live forever through other people’s memories. Music is my legacy. I hope my niece, nephew, and god children see me following this dream and become inspired. I hope I have kids who are musically inclined. Music has made and kept me happy. If we are blessed enough to find the thing that makes us happy, we should do it, even if only a little bit, every day. Music is my muse.

TEAMLESBIANS.COM

MAY 2014 What are some of your greatest achievements? Playing at Baltimore Pride was pretty awesome. In 2011, I played with my old performance partner LOVE the poet as SO WHAT?! We don’t perform together anymore, so It was great to play the show by myself in 2013. I wondered if they’d think I was good enough, by myself, to carry a set. I got to play at a good time slot, a little early in the day, while folks were settling in with blankets, dogs, and coolers. I love that my music makes people relax :) Being able to travel with my LGBT songwriting show QueerCore has also been fun. It is gaining momentum in the DMV, and I believe it will be the vehicle that gives me wings and access to opportunities that I cannot yet imagine. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Where all has your music taken you on a spiritual level?

What are some things that most of your fans do not know or would be surprised to know about you? I’m such a domestic goddess. I do a lot of the cooking and indoor chores. My partner makes fun of me for it, but I watch soap operas and NFL football with equal enthusiasm and planning. My day, if possible, is planned around watching my soaps. That sounds lame, but thank heavens for DVR. My fall schedule is dependent on Steeler games, where I can watch, if it’s an early game etc. I’m hardcore about soaps and football. Also, I went to boarding school and learned how make web pages before it was cool to have my own url. I also used to a lifeguard and I love to

Psychologically/Spiritually, my music has forced me to be honest with myself and others. It has taken me inside myself and I believe it has made me emotionally mature. For the first time in my life, I can write about a relationship, while I’m in it, and that feels so good. I use music/writing to document my growth as a musician and a writer, check-in with my emotions, stresses, wishes. etc. The well for inspiration is endless. As someone who used to have writer’s block, I am proud to have come so far. I used to believe that I would jinx a relationship if i tried to write about the good stuff. I don’t believe in that and my shawty ain’t going nowhere LOL Now, I can write cheesy lesbian love songs and not feel uncomfortable. I wrote a piece called “Enough” that sounds like pillow talk. I’ve come a long way.

How is your music different from other artists? That’s a hard question. I am so inspired by Janet, India, and Lauryn, & most often compared to them. i think I sound like all of them, at different times, without trying to copy their style, & maybe no one has done that before. I don’t have a genre and I’m always interested in learning new rhythms and styles. My music is unique because it is familiar in melody but lyrically innovative. Sometimes, folks will give you a great melody with no lyrical substance. I will never write to catch ears, as much as I write to catch hearts. Lately, I’m writing more acoustic/folky songs, with less instruments & more singer/songwriter-esque. Folks are calling it a little country. I guess we’ll see how folks receive the NEXT album.

Which show do you consider to be your greatest one? I learned very quickly that I do not like to do late night cover gigs in bars. However, when I was first getting started, those gigs were necessary to make money and build a fanbase. Three years ago, I had a summer of high energy 90s hip hop R&B medleys with the best drummer and bass player, Spaceman and Benzel, and my fake little brother, Santendrix. Those nights were awesome. It felt like a high school mixtape and the crowd was going nuts. As much as I love to play slow music, if I get a chance to play with Spaceman, or any of those guys, I get pumped because those shows are unforgettable. We were doing Eminem and Jay-Z medleys, Kriss Kross, and BIG. It was nuts!

QueenEarth Continued...

What role does the LGBT community play in your life and music? When I first started singing and playing guitar, I didn’t have any intimate sexual relationships with women. Coming out as an artist parallels my sexual journey. I “came-out” in so many ways, all at once. I am always discovering myself and it is never easy. Accepting the changes in our lives is so important. The LGBT community has been receptive to my music and comforted by the fact that I don’t change pronouns or lyrics to make people comfortable. I’m raw in my delivery, or so they say, and perhaps, just by being honest and out, I am making the road a little easier for others who are struggling with their own development. I don’t know too many mainstream gay and lesbian artists. We are not invisible, and there is no reason why we can’t have more representation. I hope that QueerCore will be a catalyst for more LGBT storytellers and our allies.

What are some of your other passions? I love to cook. My mom is from North Carolina and she is a breakfast soul food master. My Dad, and now my brother, are BBQ geniuses. My sisters cook. We send each other food pics and talk smack. As we’ve gotten older, we are cooking healthier and sharing tips. I <3 the friendly competition.

Does love have an impact on your music? If so, then what impact does it have? Always. I write about love most of the time. I used to be insecure & think that I had to write political songs or social justice raps. I felt like I didn’t fit in at some venues because I didn’t write erotic pieces. I’ve learned, I like to make people cry and cuddle LOL That’s what I do now, and it doesn’t mean it won’t change. I had to learn my “lane.” Love has kept my pen moving though those insecurities & allowed me to transform. Loving myself has become easier as I come out & embrace myself, my stories. My partner is beyond supportive and encouraging. Her love has allowed me to continue and challenge myself, set goals, and believe that I can meet them. Without her, I’m sure I would be doing music, but with her, I feel like I have it all, self-love, a great relationship, & a promising career path. Now, even on my lowest days, I am proud of my accomplishments, & I feel worthy. When I didn’t love myself, I had no idea that things could be so good.

Where do you see yourself at 10 years from now? I see success and, to me, success does not mean more work. Success means I will continue to grow...It means that I have a career that affords time to spend with my loved ones. I love being an English professor. Working full-time at a college and still being able to travel to do music and creativity gigs is ideal. I see myself working from home and traveling to do shows, speaking engagements, classes, and workshops. I see a more albums and maybe my own venue. I hope to be DONE with my student loans and raising a family. I see my shawty with me. I want for both of us to be abundantly happy and it’s amazing to allow myself to wander to these places. It’s pretty awesome to share a vision with someone else.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to travel down the same road you’ve taken? It’s funny because I’m working on a book to answer that question. Here is a shorter answer. Stay inspired. Some of the best parts of my life revolve around writing, music, love, and acquiring knowledge. Those things feed each other, but it takes effort to maintain inspiration. Read creativity books. Meet and search for other motivated folks to create a supportive network. I often write about “blazing my own trail’ and wondering who I can follow. I don’t know anyone who does what I want to do. I only know people who do some of the things that I do. It is crucial to tap into our local communities and find its resources, people that you can meet in person to exchange ideas. I meet educators, musicians, and creative professionals who have great advice and are willing to help someone else so things can be a little easier. Once you find your path, pay it forward, and show someone else the way. Don’t hoard information or be afraid to share you ideas. Just make sure you share with the right people. Keeping it all to yourself could be preventing you from connecting with others, growing, or even starting an idea. I hope I inspire folks like I am inspired, every day, in my work.

Let’s face it, now-a-days every time you turn on the television set or the computer there seems to be a new „gay friendly” website or some new gay centered television show on.

GAY MARRIAGE: AGIFT OR A CURSE?

T

he LGBT community has been fighting for equality for many decades. 50 years ago a lesbian being free to legally marry the woman of her dreams was just that, a „dream.” However, now that our dreams are slowly becoming a reality, the question is: Is gay marriage becoming less about making a lifetime commitment to the one you love and slowly becoming more of a trend… just the „in thing” to do? A huge portion of the United States and many countries outside of America are fighting tooth and nail to ban gay marriage for good. In some places, homosexuals, when “outed” or otherwise are discovered to be gay lesbian, or bisexual, are actually being imprisoned or even executed for their lifestyle choice. Yet and still the media and social networks continue to make billions of dollars off of or because of the LGBT community.

Let’s face it, now-a-days every time you turn on the television set or the computer there seems to be a new ”gay friendly” website or some new gay centered television show on. I agree that these new websites and television shows can be empowering in a sense, but at the same time can easily make some of us feel like circus freaks, or cash cows as if gay and lesbian couples are only good enough for entertainment purposes, but will never be truly accepted into society with open arms. es there may be truth in the saying that a few of us are getting married just to prove that we can or have the right to, but contrary to popular belief, not all gay people are commitment phobic sex addicts. Most of us are really searching for true love, and the perfect story book ending.

The divorce rate in states that allow gay marriage is 20% lower than in states that prohibit gay marriage.

Article By:

Crystal Those who rally against us continue to claim that allowing gays to get married will destroy the sanctity and institution of marriage, but truth be told facts and numbers prove otherwise. The divorce rate in states that allow gay marriage is 20% lower than in states that prohibit gay marriage. Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the nation, and it just so happens to be the first state that legalized gay marriage in the year 2004. As a matter of fact their divorce rate has even decreased since doing so. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Bottom line is this, as human beings we are all in the pursuit of happiness, and regardless if we find that happiness in the arms of a man or a woman that should be our choice to make. We should all be given equal opportunity to have that love not only celebrated and respected, but recognized by the court of law.

A Diamond in the rough A Journey from the

Article By:

U.S. to Germany & back.

Mala vIBEZ

There comes a time in each of our lives where we seem to have that defining moment of who we are. We find ourselves. This is the story of Diamond Norvell, a model, artist, actress, and musician.

A

s a soldier in the United States Army, Diamond Norvell found her passion through art and modeling. Serving a 3 year term in the army, she found herself stationed in Germany. Though she spent most of those 3 years in Germany, she had also been deployed to Baghdad, Iraq. Joining the army was no easy choice for Diamond as she had it tough being stereotyped not only because she was an African American minority but also because she had a plethora of tattoos that tied together her overall unique look. Being in the army, Diamond worked with several Generals and high ranking officials with a nearly endless list of tasks. From security manager to obtaining security clearance for

soldiers, she just about did it all. Despite the deadly attacks and stress that came with her deployment, she continued writing music and holding studio sessions until the early morning hours with other soldier musicians. Though she had always had a love for music; she had not quite dove into the world of modeling. It was by way of Irina Novikova, a Russian photographer that Diamond had her first break. In love with Diamond’s look, she booked a test shoot. Never before had she realized her interest in modeling, but it came to life the moment she stood in front of the camera. Though she found herself shy and reserved, it was not from modeling itself, but rather from being labeled a stud during a time in which she had not broken out of her shell;

however, her uneasiness soon dissipted. Dealing with the stresses of army life was by no means easy. However, having her God mother, Queen Elizabeth La-ah’s support in Cameroon, Africa, she managed to keep pushing forward. During a particular visit, her God mother told her “Baby, there is something inside of you that you have not even seen yet and once it comes out, you will have the power to move mountains and be a special blessing that others will need.” Needless to say, Diamond cherished those words of wisdom and held them close to her heart. In 2012, this young talent chose to leave the army and travel throughout Europe with only a dream and a suitcase. Constantly underestimated, Diamond had something to

S

Sapphire Stalleion Robert w/ APN Sapphire Stalleion prove and not to the naysayers, but to herself. Viewed as a raping young thug with tattoos, she knew that this journey would not be easy, but that it would surely be worth it. With nowhere else to turn, Diamond sat down to have a talk with God as well as her God Mother. Surprisingly, it was virtually the same conversation that she previously had with Diamond 2 years prior. With that same dream and tattered suitcase, Diamond began traveling across Europe once again, with Spain, Amsterdam, and Croatia being her favorites. God continued to place the right people in her life as far as modeling and her career. Germany was where her career was grounded. Sometime later while working security at a Young Joc concert, DeVictor Powell, a Wiesbaden Germany Photographer, became completely amazed with Diamond’s unique look and randomly asked to take shots of her. During the same time period, she also met stylist and choreographer, Sasha Snow, which helped bring out her sense of fashion. The most special aspect of her relationship with Sasha Snow was that she became one of the first real friends that Diamond had had. After stints with Powell, Snow, her God mother, and others, Diamond had the confidence and power to step in front of the camera and play any role given to her. So what was the most important lesson she learned? Being reserved and

What does not kill you only makes you stronger...It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

How to Mend a BrokenHeart

Article By:

I

s the best way to get over someone to get under someone new? That seems to be the coping mechanism most frequently used in both the gay and the straight communities alike when recovering from a break up, but does it really work? Well speaking from my own past experience, being a rebound is never fun. Yes, the intimate encounters may be exciting and it may seem refreshing to have a not so serious, or should i say feather weight relationship with someone. However in order for that type of arrangement to work, both parties involved would have to be on the same page. Let’s face it as females whether we be fem or butch, we as women most times have the tendency to lead with our emotions or wear our hearts on our sleeves. With that being said one of us is bound to catch stronger feelings for the other somewhere down the line right? Well then again maybe

not. I guess it’s depends on the individual. For some of you, you may decide to put your ex, or you yourself may be placed into the dreaded -friend zone-…you know the place ladies. The place where all ex’s go when one of you is having a hard time letting go completely. Now this particular method may work best for some because it is a surefire way to keep your ex in your life without all the hassle or responsibility that comes with being in a committed relationship, but be careful because there are side effects to this -prescription- as well. Be honest with yourself. How many of u have had that one moment of weakness where what may start of as a friendly conversation or innocent flirtation between you and an ex somehow turns into a night of passion and or regret? The term most commonly used to best describe this would be to back slide or slip up. For the rest of you going through a difficult break

up or heart break you may prefer to adopt the [I’m gonna do me] motto. The urban dictionary defines this as someone that is willing to do whatever it may take to better one’s self physically, mentally, or emotionally; focused mainly on self-gratification either being unaware of or not at all concerned with any consequence that may follow. No matter which of these category’s you may find yourself fitting into, even if it’s not one already listed in this article, ladies one thing is for sure we have all been through some form of heartache in our lifetime. I know when you are the one going through it, it may feel like the worst or most painful experience known to man, but you will get through it. Just remember the famous quotes “What does not kill you only makes you stronger,” and “Never be afraid to open your heart again to someone in the future because it is better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all.”

SCARED OF BEAUTIFUL JAY VAUGHN “JAE AMOUR” ROBERTSON

U

pon first glance at Jay Vaughn “Jae Amour” Robertson you would assume the tall handsome 23 year old is either a basketball player or a model. Actually he is a fashion designer with his own “Jae Amour” clothing line. At first he was a model for a couple of years before he decided to follow his dream and launch his own line. It was during a talk with a former supervisor that led Mr. Roberson to sign up for fashion school. After being asked, “Are you working for your circumstances, or are you working for your destiny?” When thinking about his answer he decided he was ready to work for his destiny. He designed a birthday dress for a friend and never looked back. The French name “Jae Amour” stands for J’s Love, which as we all don’t have to guess is fashion. I had the wonderful privilege of following him for his “Scared of Beautiful” collection, which debuted at the Pink Black & White Chandelier Edition Fashion Show in Columbus Ohio. Going behind the scenes during a huge fashion show was an absolutely crazy experience. The designers running around, the models getting their last minute touches, and the crowds anticipation of garments ready to blaze the runway. I have to admit I felt a bit uncomfortable being around so many beautiful women at once, but I really enjoyed the behind the scenes moments. Jay voughn was dressed to impress, and his line was absolutely fabulous. His line opened up the show. When I say it was something fresh out of Hollywood, trust me it was. He wrote a poem about fashion that included the names of all the designers in the show, the pure love for fashion, and what it really represents. The music cued and the rest is history. His set was simply amazing; there were trained classical dancers, and even an incerp of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o acceptance speech talking about beauty.

s Jay Vaughn took his final walk down the runway models at his side he got very emotional. If you knew the story behind “Scared of Beautiful, “ then you would totally understand why he was brought to tears. The crowd was on their feet, and the moment was totally humbling. The inspiration behind the “Scared of Beautiful” Collection was various events that happened to him. It was the hardest collection for him to do. The hardest piece was the black widow dress. It took a long time because he had to keep stopping from all the emotions that were going through him. The dress represented the death of his child due to miscarriage, and also a part of him that was dead inside. For a long time he felt as if he was the black sheep, and like he would never fit in anywhere. Jay Vaughn was very emotional while recalling the event’s that helped to create the collection. I can only imagine the pain he suffered. When asked if he could design for anybody in the world his answer was so clear and downright real, “K. Michelle.” If his line never hit the stores, and if nobody ever knew his name it would be one of the realest in the game right now…Miss K. Michelle! Of course everyone loves K. Michelle and if you don’t you may need to really check out her music, her voice, and her story. He has been a fan of K. Michelle since the beginning of her career, since the mix tapes and before record deals were made, and definitely way before Love and Hip Hop. It was her music that got him through some of his

toughest breakups. “To see my clothes on someone who has had that much inspiration on me, that would be my ultimate.” ne thing I love about the line is the fact that Jay Vaughn designs for all shapes of women. He doesn’t just do your typical runway less than 100-pound models; he has a variety of clothes and makes something for every woman. Since he has launched his line he has had a lot of support and mentoring from many other Columbus designers. With Columbus being number 3 in the United States when it comes to fashion its very hard to get your name known easily. I have been with him on many occasions when someone would walk up to him and tell him they loved his work from a previous show.

It was 2013 when he won the title of Ohio’s Emerging Designer of the Year. If you haven’t got a chance to check out his work and will be in the Columbus Ohio area during the summer he will be doing a hair show, and also showing some more pieces during this years Posed Awards June 13th -15th 2014. His work has been nominated for a couple of awards this year, Best Women’s High Fashion Designer, and Best Women’s Urban Designer. After the Posed Awards he will be taking an official break until Spring of 2015 when he will be launching his Jae Amour line officially! Be sure to stay on the look out for Lez Undergrounds YouTube Channel that will feature exclusive interviews with upcoming artists and entertainers. Jay Vaughn “Jae Amour” Roberson is our first artist we are covering.

n one the Science Updates podcast, “Greedy Computers” by Bob Hirshon, the topic of computers and their strain on natural resources was explored. Since the birth of the internet, technology has swiftly changed bringing about millions of computers for consumers to purchase either for their homes or businesses. At first glance, this is a wonderful edition to everyday life; however, after listening to this podcast, I learned that there is a downside as well that is detrimental not only

to society but to our natural resources as well. Nearly every technological advance is positive in one manner or another, but there are also negative aspects of these changes. Often times we see labels on our computers that say “made in China” or in some other location, but the truth is that by time the computer is purchased and set up at home or in the office, it has likely been through nearly every country around the globe. As discussed in the podcast,

Mala vIBEZ

computers are not only keyboards, hard drives, and monitors, there are loads of natural resources that must come together in order to have these components work the way that they are intended to. From metal to silicon, to oil to water, the environmental footprints of computers are vast! I completely agree with Hirshon that computers are indeed greedy and just manufacturing one computer uses more natural resources than many other larger machines around today!
