Life Fit – An Over view Overview This series of books is aimed at promoting healthy patterns of activity that encourage children to take an active and responsible outlook on their wellbeing. The activities endeavour to foster responsible habits that will carry on through adolescence and into adulthood.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

In a time when the number of overweight children is on the increase and health problems are becoming more prevalent, the introduction of regular, enjoyable and varied forms of exercise is of paramount importance. As teachers we see the firsthand results of the increasingly popular fast-food diet and lack of regular exercise. Daily physical activity is running a poor second to reliance on technological forms of entertainment, such as computer use and video games, which encourage a sedentary lifestyle. Teachers are a powerful influence on children. By introducing the benefits of a physically active lifestyle and encouraging and supporting children to establish their own positive values and attitudes towards physical activity we, as teachers, are supplying the foundation for a fitter, healthier and more productive generation of young adults.

These books support the Active Lifestyle and Games and Sports strands of the New South Wales P.D.H.P.E. K-6 Syllabus and the Human Movement Strand of the document - Health and Physical Education - a curriculum profile for Australian schools. The activities provide a variety of practical skill and movement sessions suited to the age and ability levels of the children they target. The first book focuses on Stage 1, 5-8 year olds. Book 2 takes in Stage 2, 9-10 year olds, while Book 3 covers Stage 3, 11-13 year olds.

Working in teams of three or four the children will complete a set number of laps around a marked course. Try and keep the number of laps a multiple of four if using four-member teams, or a multiple of 3 if using three-member teams. Two children from each team stand inside their hoop and on “go” run together around the course.

Upon returning to the start one child in the hoop is replaced by another team member and another circuit is completed. This continues until each team has completed the required number of laps.

The class is divided into six groups organised as shown in the diagram. Each group starts at a designated marker and holds hands. On “go” all groups run around the course aiming to catch the group or groups in front of them. If they catch another team they overtake and continue to chase the team in front. There is a 5-minute time limit for this run. If a group is not caught in the 5 minutes they receive 10 points. If they catch another group they receive 20 bonus points and if they are caught they lose 10 points. The team with the most points is the winner. Teams must hold hands for the entire run.

Divide the class into teams of six. Each team stands in single file behind a set hoop formation. The leader at the front has a beanbag. On “go” the leader places the beanbag in hoop b and procedes to lead his/her team on a hopscotch through the hoops and back to the start. Once through the hoops they can run back to the start. When the leader returns to the start he/she throws the beanbag in hoop c and the team follow him/her through as before. This is continued until the beanbag has been placed in all seven hoops. Each time the team hops through they cannot step in the hoop with the beanbag.

Children are grouped in teams of six with the front child (leader) holding a hoop. All other team members place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front. They cannot remove their hands at any time during the duration of the relay unless running to the front of the line.

On “go” the leader threads himself/herself through the hoop and it is passed in a similar fashion to the end of the line. The last member then runs to the front of the line and repeats the action. When the leader has worked his/her way to the back of the line and receives the hoop he/she runs to the front of the line and sits in the hoop. The first team finished wins.

Children can knock their opponent’s bag out of play and if any part of the bag is on a line then points are scored. “Liners” score the lower value points.

The game is quick to play, so 3 - 4 pairs can occupy one playing area with non-participants watching, or have a round-robin with the winner of each area challenging others.
