Introduction The learning of concepts related to TIME is an important stage in the mathematical development of young children. This book allows 11 to 13 year old students to be introduced to, or reminded about, these concepts. It adopts a structured and systematic approach which allows plenty of consolidation of the skills being covered.

TIme To Nearest Minute - Information page Minute Hand Between each number on the clock face there are five minutes. The minute hand shows each of these minutes as it moves past each number. E.g. 1 represents five minutes past; 4 represents twenty minutes past.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

E.g. the clock below shows 12:17. 17 means seventeen minutes past the hour. The hour hand is read by the actual number it is pointing to or has last passed.

The hour hand is between the one and the two and has passed one. The minute hand is pointing to the minutes between the six and seven. Remember: the 6 represents thirty minutes (6 × 5 = 30) and 7 represents thirty-five minutes (7 × 5 = 35). The minute hand is two minutes past thirty minutes, i.e. thirty-two minutes past. Therefore the correct time on the clock is 1:32.

The hour hand is between seven and eight and has passed seven. The minute hand is between fifty minutes and fifty-five minutes. It is pointing to fifty-four minutes. Therefore the time on the clock is 7:54. Page 4

Time To Nearest Second The Second Hand

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

To read the second hand remember that there are five points to be counted between each number on the clock face, therefore: 1 represents five seconds (1 × 5) 2 represents ten seconds (2 × 5) 5 represents twenty-five seconds (5 × 5) etc.

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

The second hand is a thin hand on some clock faces. The second hand follows the same numbers as the minute hand on the clock face but it moves much faster. In fact the second hand passes around the whole clock face once for every one minute passed by the minute hand, i.e. sixty seconds = one minute.

Not all clocks have a second hand.

If a clock does have a second hand it will look like this.

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons It is 1:55 on the clock face. •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y• The second hand is pointing to the seven. To read the second hand

Examples:

w ww

. te

m . u

Remember that the 7 represents thirty-five seconds (7 × 5 = 35). Therefore the second hand is showing thirty-five seconds. The correct time on this clock is 1:55 and 35 seconds.

o c . che e r o t r s super

Usually we use the second hand for timing things, e.g. how long it takes to run around the playground. Starting time

Finishing time

At the start the second hand was at twelve which represents zero seconds. At the finish the second hand was on eight, which represents forty seconds. Thus it took forty seconds to complete the task. Many things can be timed in this way.

The rotation of the earth causes different places on the earth to be exposed to the sun at different times. Some places of the world may be in daytime while other places are in night.

Most time is based on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Greenwich is a borough of London. It is the site of the original Royal Observatory, from which longitude is calculated. This map shows what the time will be at other places around the world when it is midnight (12:00) at Greenwich (0°). For each 30° of longitude the time is different by two hours.

Light Years

w ww

To measure distance to and between stars in space, astronomers use the measurement of light years. This is based on the distance travelled in one earth year by one pulse of light. Light travels at approximately 300 000 km per second. One light year is therefore 9 460 000 000 000 kilometres, i.e. 300 000 km per second × 60 seconds per minute × 60 minutes per hour × 24 hours per day × 365 days per year. How clever are you? Work out how far away these stars are from Earth. (Hint: Work without the zeroes.)

Time In Ancient Egypt A design & technology project

A Royal Project In Time

Royal Decree to the Overseer of the Building of the King's Sphinx.

Teac he r

ew i ev Pr

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Let it be known that I am displeased with the slow progress being made with my latest monument - the Sphinx. Too often I gaze from my palace and see many of the workers resting idly - not working. I fear that you are treating them too kindly and they are becoming lazy. Also, some working are having longer rest periods than others. I will not tolerate this behaviour. You are to invent a device for measuring time. You may use sand or water in its construction - I care not which - and whatever other materials you may need to obtain from our Royal Stores. You will use this device to ensure that my workers only rest for short periods. My command will be obeyed. Signed

WHAT TO DO

w ww

As you can see by the Pharoah's letter to his Overseer, he is a worried little Egyptian, but you and your group CAN help him out by designing the time measuring device that he requires.

. te

m . u

o c . che e r o t r s super

Approach your task by ...

1. Considering the objective of the device.

2. Brainstorming to explore all the possibilities for devices. 3. Looking at the materials available from the Royal Store. (Page 47) 4. Selecting possible devices now that materials are considered. 5. Drawing rough plans for three devices in the spaces on Page 46 and choosing one. 6. Working out the cost of your timing device. (Page 47) 7. Actually constructing and testing the time measuring device.
