The 24 Hour Clock

On a 12 hour clock each time is shown twice a day, e.g. 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, 4:00 am and 4:00 pm. We use am and pm to tell us whether the time is morning (am) or afternoon (pm).

Teac he r

From midday the number of the hours continues, e.g. 1:00 pm becomes 1300 hours, 2:00 pm becomes 1400 hours, etc. There are no punctuation marks used in 24 hour clock times.

Another way of telling the time, without am or pm, is the 24 hour clock. This clock begins at midnight and reads the same as a 12 hour clock until midday.

Pieces of Time

A minute is named as such because it is a small or minute part of an hour. The Babylonians were responsible for hours being divided into minutes and seconds because their number system was based on sixties as well as tens. Thus we have 60 minutes = 1 hour and 60 seconds = 1 minute. A second is so called because it is the second time the hour is divided.

Answers October, from octo, Latin for “eight”; November, from novem, Latin for “nine”; December, from decem, Latin for “ten”. Page 37 - Research (2) Sundial: Usually circular stand with markings to indicate periods of time, and a stationary arm. The passage of time is measured by the movement of the arm’s shadow. Hourglass: Two transparent chambers linked by a narrow passage, containing a fixed quantity of sand which takes a specified time to trickle from one chamber to the other. Candle clock: Candle marked to indicate fixed periods of time, the passage of time is measured through the burning of the candle. Water clock: Functions through water dripping through a hole in the base of a container, which lowers the water level past markings on the container sides. These markings are spaced to indicate fixed levels of time.

Page 36 - Research (1) The Ancient Romans named the 7 days of the week after the Sun, the Moon and the five known planets: Sunday(dies solis, “Sun’s day”), Monday(dies lunae, “Moon’s day”), and Saturday(dies Saturni, “Saturn’s day”) retain their names derived directly from the Roman culture. Tuesday (‘Tiwi’s day”), Wednesday(“Woden’s day”), Thursday(“Thors day”), and Friday(“Frigg’s day”) are derived from the German equivalents of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus, respectively. The names also commemorate Nordic Gods Thor, Odin, Frigg/Freya and Tyr, who played a part in German mythology. The months were named after important figures in Greek and Roman mythology, and after natural events: January: named for Janus, god of beginnings and endings and doorkeeper of heaven; February, named for Februalis, a time period when sacrifices were made to atone for sins; March, named for Mars, the god of war, presumably signifying that the campaigns interrupted by winter could be resumed; April from aperire, Latin for “to open”(buds); May, named for Maia, the goddess of growth of plants; June, from juvenis, Latin for “youth”; July, named for Julius Caesar; August, named for Augustus, the first Roman emperor; September, from septem, Latin for “seven”;
