Teachers’ Notes Learning the letters of the alphabet and their most common sounds is an important step in your students’ phonological awareness reading and spelling journeys. Skilled readers have a strong understanding of the relationship between letters and the sounds they make. In this book, children are taught to identify the sound of each letter, blend the sounds together to read whole words and segment words into individual sounds to spell whole words. This is called ‘synthetic phonics’ and has proven to be more effective than other approaches regardless of whether children do or do not experience reading difficulties. Instruction should be explicit and systematic; and skills constantly reviewed, practised and applied to real reading. Discussion about whether letter sounds or names should be taught first, whether uppercase or lowercase (or both) should be the initial focus and what order the letters should be introduced, is common. This book introduces the letters in a particular order, concentrating on the letter sounds and focussing on lowercase formation. However, the letter names and uppercase formations should always be mentioned and used when teaching, e.g. “This is our new letter. Its name is ‘bee’ and it says ‘b’. This is the capital ‘bee’ and this is the lowercase ‘bee’. They both say ‘b’ ”. The letters in this book are introduced in four distinct groups that differ from the traditional alphabet sequence that we know: Group 1 – s a t p i n Group 2 – h r m d c e Group 3 – g o u l f b Group 4 – w z j y v x k qu This order: 1)

separates the teaching of letters that are visually confusing (b,d,p,g);

2)

separates the letters with similar sounds (a,e) (t,d) (f,v);

3)

teaches frequently occurring letters first to enable children to begin blending and segmenting as soon as possible (sat, tap, pin, at).

This book is the third book in a four part series entitled Phonological Awareness. The other books are: Syllables and Rhyming (Book 1); Phonemic Awareness (Book 2) and Alphabet Letter Formations (Book 4). The books have been designed to be used sequentially. It is strongly recommended that you use this book in particular together with Alphabet Letter Formations. Please note: Students will need scissors, glue and coloured pencils to complete most of the activities in this book.

Curriculum Links

This book is based on the Content Descriptions below from the Australian Curriculum. English – Foundation Year – Language Content – Phonics and Word Knowledge Recognise and name all upper and lower case letters (graphemes) and know the most common sound that each letter represents (ACELA 1440) Elaborations: •

using familiar and common letters in handwritten and digital communications

identifying familiar and recurring letters and the use of upper and lowercase in written texts in the classroom and the community, for example Tom went to the park

Understand how to use knowledge of letters and sounds including onset and rime to spell words (ACELA 1438) Elaborations: •

recognising the most common sound made by each letter of the alphabet, including consonants and short vowel sounds, for example ‘p-op’

breaking words into onset and rime, noticing words that share the same pattern, for example ‘p-at’, ‘b-at’

breaking words into onset and rime to learn how to spell words that share the same pattern, for example ‘p-at’, ‘b-at’, ‘t-all’ and ‘f-all’

building word families using onset and rime, for example ‘h-ot’, ‘g-ot’, ‘n-ot’, ‘sh-ot’

Write consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words by representing some sounds with the appropriate letters, and blend sounds associated with letters when reading CVC words (ACELA 1820) Elaboration: •

listening to hear that children use letters/sounds (when necessary) to help them read CVC words and hear and record appropriate sounds associated with letters when writing CVC words, for example ‘kat’ for ‘cat’

Suggested Additional Activities

Throughout this book, you will find cards to cut out and laminate and turn into flashcards. Following are a list of suggested ways to use these flashcards. All suggestions provide ways for children to extensively practise blending and segmenting sounds within words.

Hoops

1. Place hula hoops in a line on the floor. Use two hoops for words/pictures with two sounds and three hoops for the words/pictures with three sounds. 2. Children stand in a line behind first hoop. Teacher shows the first child a card. 3. Child jumps in the first hoop saying the first sound of the word; jumps in the second hoop saying the second sound of the word; jumps in the third hoop saying the third sound and jumps out of the hoop saying the final word. Child moves to the back of the line. 4. Show next card to the second child in line who completes the same sequence. Note: For blending activities use the words on the cards. For segmenting activities use the pictures on the cards. This activity is best suited to small groups so the children are able to have multiple turns.

5

Hoops Extension 1 (Magnetic Letters)

1. Child completes the sequence as in Hoops. 2. Child moves to the magnetic board where the required lowercase magnetic letters are jumbled and placed in a line. 3. Child uses the magnetic letters to make the word they have blended or segmented in the hoops.

Hoops Extension 2 (Whiteboard Markers)

1. Child completes sequence as in Hoops. 2. Child moves to whiteboard and uses the whiteboard marker to write the word on the board they have just blended or segmented.

Feed The Clown

1. Paste a picture of a clown’s face on the lid of a cardboard shoebox. Cut out the mouth of the clown large enough for the flashcards to be pushed through into the box. 2. Place a pack of flashcards faced down. Child takes top card and blends the words or segments the pictures. 3. Child pushes card through the clown’s mouth upon completing the task. 4. Don’t like clowns? Use a lion, monkey, dinosaur, etc. as the face on the shoebox.

Fishing

1. Attach a paper clip to each flashcard. Make a fishing rod using a length of dowel, string and a magnet. 2. Children use rod to ‘catch’ a word/picture and blend or segment out loud. Place successful ‘fish’ in a bucket.

Sound And Take

1. Place flashcards on a table. Children sit around the table. 2. First child selects a card and sounds out the word or segments the picture. 3. If successful, the child keeps the card. Move around the table, children take turns collecting cards. Note: Use all words for blending or all pictures for segmenting. As children master task, jumble words and pictures so children must alternate the skill required.

Magnetic Letters

1. Use Blu Tack or magnets to attach pictures on flashcards to a magnetic board. 2. Jumble required lowercase magnetic letters on the board. 3. Child selects letters required to make the word that matches the picture. 4. Child places magnetic letters underneath the picture and sounds out word while pointing to the letters. 5. The same activity can be completed on a desk top by using letter tiles or laminated letters.

Picture Word Match

1. Use two sets of the flashcards. Use different coloured card for each set for ease of sorting. 2. Place one set word up and the second set picture up. 3. Child matches word to picture and places matching cards together. 4. This task can be an independent task or completed in pairs or small groups.

Find A Friend

1. Use two sets of the flashcards as in previous activity. 2. Distribute cards to children who then wander around and find a child who has matching word or picture.

Pass Word

1. Use individual letter flashcards, or group flashcards. 2. Child must identify letter or complete a blending or segmenting task as they leave or enter the classroom. 6
