GET TO KNOW TEACHERS COLLEGE Teachers College, Columbia University, was founded in 1887 by philanthropist Grace Hoadley Dodge and philosopher Nicholas Murray Butler. It was envisioned not just as a place to learn teaching techniques, but as a new kind of college where students and faculty could gain a deeper understanding of how people learn – through study of subjects including educational psychology and educational sociology. 125 years later, Teachers College has grown and evolved into a diverse institution that is still blazing academic trails. We have educated approximately 100,000 individuals from around the world. Teachers College is the oldest and largest graduate school of education in the United States, and also perennially ranked among the nation’s best. While the name Teachers College reflects a dedication to producing quality teachers, only about one-third of Teachers College students are preparing to become teachers.
