CASE STUDIES

UNT Discovery Park Upgrade TD team installs half a million pounds of equipment 10 months ahead of schedule. By Katie Lippe

The central plant equipment was installed two sets at a time with the other two sets continuing to run with no downtime for the customer.

OVERVIEW: UNT Discovery Park occupies

SAFETY: The specifications called for welded

nearly 300 acres with a sprawling 590,000 sq. ft. facility comprised of multiple wings. TD’s scope of work included the replacement of the major mechanical systems for Wings E and F, which house multiple state-of-the-art research labs. These labs contain high-value equipment, tall ceilings and climate control technology for optimal research conditions.

stainless ductwork inside the labs, so our team used a flanged and gasketed stainless duct system to mitigate any exposed flame or risk inside the occupied facility. The 600ton cranes used to hoist the air handlers on the roof were deployed only on weekends.

SCOPE OF WORK: TD’s Fort Worth Special Projects team worked in 17 labs in Wing E, replacing 180 Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes and installing four new rooftop air handling units (AHUs). In Wing F, an additional 180 VAV boxes were replaced and four new AHUs were installed to revitalize classrooms and four labs. TD replaced major equipment in the Central Plant, including the demolition and removal of three existing chillers and 16 existing cooling tower cells. In addition, TD reinstalled 11 hydronic pumps, two water-cooled chillers with 2,400 tons of cooling capacity, four cooling tower cells at 3,600 tons of capacity and added two heating water boilers.

CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE: All work was done with scheduled phased installations, three off-hours shutdowns and no interruptions to any occupants or class schedules.

LEADERSHIP: TD’s competency in project management led to an advisory role for the other subcontractors on the site. TD was involved in key strategic planning meetings and assisted in decision making about subcontractors’ scope.

AWARDS: The project won first place in the TEXO Distinguished Building Awards Mechanical Contractor 2 category in March 2022.

ASU Tempe’s Science and Technology Building

T

he $192 million Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 7 at ASU is a stunning structure built with sustainability in mind. With McCarthy Building Companies as general contractor, TD’s design-assist scope on the project includes full mechanicals with plumbing, nearly 2 miles of piping and extensive HVAC ductwork. All of the mechanical equipment for the “beautiful and extremely efficient building” was prefabricated by TD’s world-class manufacturing team, a TD project manager on the project says. The 281,000 sq. ft. facility, known as ISTB7, anchors the university’s Tempe campus. ISTB7 includes classrooms, 70,000 sq. ft. of lab space, a lecture hall and exhibit space. The raised structure adds shade and natural cooling that borrows design insights from Native American cliff dwellings. It includes water-based climate control to reduce energy use and directs all rain to landscaping and aquifer recharging. The HVAC systems only bring in fresh air as needed.

SMART BUILDINGS

TDIndustries Introduces Smart Buildings Solution By Mitch Britto

Energy and Information Management Data management can be overwhelming for any building operator. BrightBlue™, along with TD’s expertise, takes the waste — and guesswork — out of building systems operations and lets you know what’s happening in an easy-to-use platform. In new or existing buildings, Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) can be identified without sacrificing tenant comfort or equipment life. And in many cases, these are no-cost or low-cost changes.

Proactive Automated Fault Detection and Diagnostics

W

hat is BrightBlue™? BrightBlue™ is an automated fault detection and diagnostics solution that optimizes your building systems’ reliability and performance. It helps you ensure consistent occupant comfort, conserve energy and resources, and extend equipment life. How does BrightBlue™ help building system operations?

TDSpirit 2022 / VOLUME 1

Fault detection and diagnostics pinpoint the root causes of the problem so you can take corrective action immediately. Instead of exploring a list of repair possibilities or chasing ancillary system faults, BrightBlue™ guides you with an in-depth analysis of your building systems’ needs. A standard Building Automation System can’t do this.

System Oversight Prevent system breakdowns by spotting operational inefficiencies before they lead to more

serious problems. Our expert BrightBlue™ engineers will work with you to integrate and customize the suite of tools to optimize your equipment performance, maintain asset compliance, provide ongoing commissioning and best serve your facility needs.

Extended Equipment Life-Cycle More than 80% of equipment failures are not related to equipment age. BrightBlue™ prioritizes equipment faults to save on labor costs, while enhanced diagnostics allow customers to ensure building conditions remain optimal for the health and well-being of their occupants.

to support critical equipment operation, energy reduction, workflow optimization, sustainability and improvement of comfort control to meet each client’s goals. TD’s long-standing relationships with customers and facilities teams are the foundation for deriving a BrightBlue™ solution to meet each client’s key performance indicators.

Fault detection and diagnostics provide an in-depth analysis that allows you to pinpoint the root causes of the problem so you can take corrective action.

HOW IT WORKS

BrightBlue™ Opportunities TD implements BrightBlue™ solutions across industries: Schools and universities* Health care centers Data centers Office buildings *In one example, BrightBlue™ detected 62 diagnostic faults and will save the organization an estimated $84,000 per year in energy costs. All solutions were low or no cost and identified in the first three months of implementation. No matter the industry, TD can provide a customized BrightBlue™ solution

D is proud to share that Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, won an Excellence in Construction Eagle Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) earlier this year in the Specialty Contractor category. As any Texas Rangers fan will tell you, this state-of-the-art facility is visually stunning and comfortable. The 5.5-acre retractable roof and 1.9 million pounds of galvanized HVAC ducting combine to combat the searing heat of summer baseball in Texas while providing a striking, modern design. TD installed 91 miles of piping, furnished over 450 restroom facilities and provided 9,000 tons of cooling power for this 1.8 million square foot facility with a seating capacity of 41,000. TD had approximately 400 mechanical and plumbing craftworkers on-site during its peak to meet the project’s demanding 24-month timeline.
