TCU Athletics 2019-20 Annual Report

Page 1

The women’s basketball team won a program-best 13 Big 12 games and finished in second place in the league. The Horned Frogs were set to earn an NCAA Tournament bid for the first time since 2010.

DEAR HORNED FROGS FANS, The 2019-20 athletics season was unlike any we have experienced, and I cannot thank you enough for your support and understanding as we worked through the many challenges we faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the outstanding leadership of Chancellor Victor Boschini and our Board of Trustees, we were able to continue to move forward as a program and university. My heart went out to our many student-athletes who had their TCU experience and athletics seasons cut short, but I was so proud of the way in which our student-athletes handled this adversity.

Individually, in a shortened athletics season, 18 student-athletics earned All-America honors. We also led all football programs in the Big 12 Conference and state of Texas with five NFL Draft picks, including first-round selections Jalen Reagor and Jeff Gladney. Some exciting news came in January when the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee of our Board of Trustees voted unanimously to add women’s triathlon as our newest sport. We will begin competition in Fall 2022 and become the first school in Texas with the program. Women’s triathlon will give us 22 sports, the most in the Big 12 Conference. It also enables us to continue to meet Title IX gender equity compliance requirements. Our previous sport additions were beach volleyball in 2015 and equestrian in 2006. Just like those two programs, we expect women’s triathlon to compete immediately on the national level and be an annual title contender.

Our success in competition was mirrored on the academic side. The spring semester saw us achieve a special milestone. For the first time in our history, all of our sports recorded a team grade-point average of at least 3.0. We saw 90 student-athletes earn their degrees and equestrian’s Laska Anderson become a Rhodes Scholar finalist. While congratulating our student-athletes on their academic accomplishments, I join them in appreciation of our Athletics Academic Services Office. The Frog Club and Donor Relations teams’ great efforts are also worth acknowledging as they worked tirelessly to provide a unique experience for the donors that made it possible for us to have the new world-class Legends Club & Suites. In appreciation of our donors' support, we presented a virtual ribbon cutting and dedication in June. This facility goes well beyond football game days each fall; it will be used year-round by TCU and Fort Worth. It is my hope this facility brings joy and excitement for our many fans and community.

A N N U A L

Nine of our 21 sports were ranked in the national top 25, and men’s indoor track and field won the Big 12 championship in the 4x400 relay. Rifle was ranked second in the nation. Women’s basketball won 22 games and was second in the Big 12 with a 13-5 record, its highest finish ever in the conference. Men’s basketball was primed to play in the postseason in four straight years for the first time in program history. Equestrian was ranked eighth and beat No. 6 Georgia on Senior Day. Swimming and diving was in first place at the CSCAA NIC. Beach volleyball was ranked 15th in the polls and in position to earn its first NCAA Tournament berth. Baseball was nationally ranked and won 8-4 at No. 2 UCLA. Men’s tennis was ranked seventh in the country with a nine-match winning streak that included four victories over teams ranked in the top 14. Women’s soccer earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight season, making us one of just 20 programs nationally to accomplish the feat.

On behalf of our more than 500 student-athletes as well as coaches and staff, thank you for your unwavering commitment and belief in our mission of serving student-athletes.

HORNED FROG HAPPENINGS Over the course of the year, the Frog It Forward initiative continued to unite TCU Horned Frogs and the Fort Worth community, creating meaningful relationships and lasting impacts. The first TCU Inclusion Rivalry Game was in partnership with Special Olympics North Texas. The game was flag football as TCU student-athletes were joined by TCU’s Special Olympics Club. Members of the women’s basketball and men’s tennis teams acted as celebrity servers for The Taste Project Community Restaurant, which offers a “pay what you can” model, allowing all Fort Worth residents the chance to have a hot meal and a warm smile. Track and field participated in a Habitat for Humanity Build, and contributed to the foundation of a local Fort Worth home, spending over eight hours on the project. First year Horned Frogs also played a part in repainting and refreshing the Habitat home of Ms. Emma during their Horned Frog Academy session over the summer. Beach volleyball, baseball, as well as men’s and women’s basketball each hosted an inclusion clinic, inviting local Special Olympics teams and the Beautiful Lives Project athletes to TCU’s campus.

SOCIAL MEDIA GENERATING ENGAGEMENT DURING #WFH

COACH P DELIVERS SONG OF THE SUMMER

Football’s coordinator of new and creative media, Kyle Coulter, probably never thought he would be in a position to produce a music video, but he delivered an incredible video to accompany the song, and Coach Patterson was able to release via his social media platforms, generating over 400,000 views on Twitter alone.

RIFF RAM VIDEO TRADITION CARRIES ON The Riff Ram video that has played at TCU football games beginning in 2014 has become a beloved tradition over that short period of time, and after hearing the feedback during the 2018 season, the digital and marketing teams went back to the basics to bring back a video that our fanbase would love for 2019.

14

Planning for the video began in February, and once it was decided that fans would be encouraged to submit their own videos of the Riff Ram chant for inclusion into the final product, our digital and marketing teams worked all summer long to ensure the video would be a success.

During the pandemic, head football coach Gary Patterson was able to check off a bucket list item, as he recorded his original song, “Take A Step Back”, as a reassuring message to appreciate the things in life that we often overlook.

The onset of the coronavirus pandemic certainly posed a unique challenge for our digital strategy, as all of our seasons were ended prematurely and we were no longer able to have a personal interaction with our fans. In order to stay engaged with our fans as we all worked from home (#WFH), we rolled out several new features, including Horned Frogs Classics (re-airing old TCU contests), On This Day graphics, Frog Moments (top highlights from previous season), Driveway Drills with our men’s basketball coaches, coloring books, crossword puzzles and even a video compilation of our student-athletes joining together to sing “Lean on Me.” Between March 17-May 31, the main TCU Athletics Facebook account ranked second among all Power Five official athletics accounts in growth and third in interaction rate, while the TCU Athletics Instagram account ranked in the top 25 in total interactions, video views and growth.

COACH PEBLEY GOES VIRAL When the women’s basketball team had to return back home from Kansas City without ever even playing a game at the Big 12 Championship, having earned the tournament’s No. 2 seed and in the midst of a very special season, it was an emotional moment. There to greet the heartbroken players and staff was the TCU Baseball team, along with other members of the athletics department, handing out white roses. Head coach Raegan Pebley captured the moment and posted the video on Twitter, which generated over 560,000 views. The video was then picked up by various news outlets, including SportsCenter, Sports Illustrated and USA Today, where it was played well over one million times.

TCU SHINES DURING DRAFT WEEKEND TCU Football made its presence known during the NFL Draft in April, with two first-round picks and five total draft selections, and the TCU Football social media accounts certainly took advantage. Among all Power Five football programs, TCU posted the highest-follower growth in the country on Instagram over the three days. Among all football platforms, the Horned Frogs totaled 841,000 video views and 4.7 million impressions.

Once the team decided it would be worn for the Texas game, members of the Digital Brand Strategy staff collaborated with football’s coordinator of new and creative media, Kyle Coulter, to create a video reveal with mind-blowing imagery to add fuel to the fire of the excitement already building for the homecoming matchup with the Longhorns.

A N N U A L

TCU Football made plenty of waves when it revealed its new uniforms in February 2019, but what fans didn’t know was that an alternate jersey had been held back to reveal at a special time during the season.

The social media accounts used a unique blend of highly-visual draft announcement videos, highlight videos and even congratulatory videos from past Horned Frogs legends. Due to our partnership with the NFL, after each Horned Frog was taken, we were also in contact with each team’s digital representatives to set up a Facebook “cross-posting” relationship, where we were able to share videos back-and-forth to further reach a new audience.

In all, the Lettermen’s Association produced or took part in more than 40 events over the last year. FUNDING THE FUTURE The TCU Lettermen’s Association has expanded giving options for members. Among the funds that the Lettermen’s Association manages are: Lettermen’s Legacy Endowment Fund – Lettermen can give to the LLEF, which has a current value of $281,777.31 with a final goal of $1.2 million. The Fund has produced more than $67,000 in distributions to the fund’s four designated areas: Athletics Capital projects, the Jane & John Justin Hall of Fame, the Tomlinson Student-Athlete Development Endowment Fund and the Lettermen’s Association Operating Budget. Comrades True Scholarship Fund – Setup by former TCU football lettermen to support a current TCU football student-athlete’s scholarship. Dutch Meyer Scholarship Fund - Founded by an endowment gift from Dutch Meyer in 1964 to provide scholarship support for the children of TCU letterwinners who attend TCU, more than $75,000 was awarded to 21 TCU students during the 2019-20 academic year. Coody & Coaches Golf Classic – Named for TCU letterman and Masters Champion Charles Coody, this Masters-themed tournament is now an official TCU Lettermen’s Association event, which members are encouraged to sponsor.
