From the desk of President and CEO March blew in and out with a flurry of development activity in Lee’s Summit that included a visit from the governor, the release of a much-anticipated housing study and approval of a massive incentive package for one of the largest developments in Lee’s Summit history. The month kicked off with LSEDC, along with Downtown Lee’s Summit, releasing results of a 2015 comprehensive Downtown Housing Study. The study demonstrated demand for multifamily and single-family homes in and around downtown and will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for new Downtown investment and development. Years of planning and collaboration came together March 10 as LS R-7 and University of Central Missouri welcomed Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to town for a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Missouri Innovation Campus along Chipman and Ward Road. The MIC is expected to serve as a global model for integrated education for years to come. The area in and around the Summit Corridor continues to be ripe for development investment. The corridor, as well as the Paragon Star project, will be featured at our LSEDC Developer’s Showcase and investor luncheon on April 6. Be sure to reserve your spot now to get important updates on new apartment, hotel and retail development along Chipman Road and near I-470 and View High Drive. In the next couple months, LSEDC expects to share some exciting announcements relating to Downtown housing and education. Stay up to date by Liking our Facebook page and Following us on Twitter. As always, if you have any questions or have companies you think would benefit from membership in the Lee’s Summit EDC, please feel free to give me a call.

Yours Truly,

MIC Groundbreaking Brings Gov. Nixon to Lee’s Summit

Gov. Nixon joined local civic and business leaders for the groundbreaking of the Missouri Innovation Campus on March 10. The campus is putting Lee’s Summit on the map as a national model for educational innovation and is expected to open in August 2017. Special thanks to our partners Dr. Chuck Ambrose, University of Central Missouri president; Dr. Kirk Nooks, Metropolitan Community College-Longview president; Stan Elliott, Missouri Innovation Campus director; Dr. David McGehee, Lee’s Summit R-7 School District superintendent; and Elaine Metcalf, Summit Technology Academy director, as well as the City of Lee’s Summit.

Comprehensive Housing Study Shows Need For Apartments The Lee’s Summit EDC released results from its 2015 Comprehensive Housing Study, which showed a pressing need for market-rate apartments downtown, as well as single-family housing. Considering the fact that there has been zero multifamily residential construction in Downtown Lee’s Summit in more than a decade, the study is expected to serve as a catalyst for more Downtown housing investment and development. This aligns with the Downtown Masterplan report recently updated. For a copy of this study and more, visit our website at www.leesssummit.org/studies.
