Letter to the Community Change is constant throughout our community. In our work to improve the health of Greater Richmond, we see how organizations we support and the people they serve are adapting to evolving technology, new legislation and changing demographics – to name a few. We see the promise of innovative and collaborative approaches, even as new challenges emerge. The Jenkins Foundation recognizes that to be an effective philanthropic partner going forward, we must respond with change of our own. Guided by a new strategic plan that is grounded in tradition, we are looking to the future with renewed commitment to respond to urgent needs and to develop innovative approaches.
Our board is diving deeper into the issues by learning together with local grantees and health experts, while also seeking strategic collaborations with peer foundations. To ensure the greatest impact for those who need it most, our grantmaking is targeting access to primary care, access to mental health services, and substance abuse prevention and treatment. We believe that our voice and relationships can be as powerful as our financial resources. We are grateful to be able to work with so many people and organizations who share our vision for building a healthy, thriving region. We are optimistic about the future and look forward to keeping you updated about our work.

Molly’s blood pressure was high and uncontrolled, leading to several visits to the emergency room. With support from Daily Planet Health Services, Molly increased visits to her doctor, learned medication and weight management strategies, and used the Patient Portal to log blood pressure readings so her doctors could monitor her in real time. As a result, Molly took her health situation from crisis to self-management.

ChildSavers
Cultivating resilience starts right away
By age four, one in four children have either witnessed or experienced an event that could be considered traumatic.
Isaiah is an energetic and creative young man who has been through some difficult things. When he was seven years old, he woke up one morning to find his father unresponsive in bed, even after Isaiah kept trying to wake him.

Isaiah was met the same day by a therapist who visited his home to assess the situation, talk him through his feelings and engage him in calming activites. Beyond immediate therapeutic work, ChildSavers provides ongoing support for each child as well. Twenty-four hours after the first visit, the therapist visited Isaiah again to see how he was doing and to schedule future counseling. She also worked with the entire family to teach them about mental health.
Over the next six months, Isaiah and his therapist practiced new strategies for dealing with tough feelings. They blew bubbles to release anxiety, drew pictures to process what happened that morning, and made a special box
to preserve the good memories of Isaiah’s dad. Through consistent care, they were able to re-establish Isaiah’s sense of safety.
The Immediate Response program is based on research from Yale University and was launched in 2004 with support from the Jenkins Foundation. In recent years, and with continued support from the Foundation, the program expanded to serve children experiencing mental health crises at home, and ChildSavers identified a new Medicaid revenue stream to help sustain this intervention work. In the last year alone, 122 children like Isaiah received essential therapeutic services to help them work through traumatic events and cultivate their resilience.
