An Evening Filled with Love August 17, 2019 6:30 p.m.

Love of Family, Love of Congregation, Love of Friends, Love of Being Together Tu B'Av (Hebrew: ‫ט״ו באב‬, “fifteenth of Av”) is a minor Jewish holiday. In modern-day Israel, it is celebrated as a holiday of love ( ‫ חג האהבה‬Hag HaAhava), similar to Valentine's Day. It has been said to be a "great day for weddings". According to the Mishna, Tu B'Av was a joyous holiday in the days of the Temple in Jerusalem, marking the beginning of the grape harvest. Yom Kippur marked the end of the grape harvest. On both dates the unmarried girls of Jerusalem dressed in white garments, and went out to dance in the vineyards. That same section in the Talmud states that there were no holy days as happy for the Jews as Tu B'Av and Yom Kippur. Tu B'Av marks an informal "high" to counter the "low" of The Three Weeks leading up to Tisha B'Av. Tu B'Av does not have many established religious rituals associated with its celebration. In modern times, it has become a romantic Jewish holiday, often compared to Valentine's Day, and has been said to be a "great day for weddings, commitment ceremonies, renewal of vows, or proposing". Love of Family, Love of Congregation, Love of Friends, Love of Being Together 1

We hope you’ll be back with us soon. We certainly miss you! Farewell to the Wills family on their move to Kill Devil Hills, NC. Samantha has been hired as the Aquatics Director at the Outer Banks Family YMCA. John is looking for a job there and also getting the house in South Boston ready to sell. Denise Johnson had an aortic valve replacement and a speedy one day recovery! We are so glad everything went so well. Our condolences go to Faye Kushner on the death of her sister Jennie Valentour. Jennie has been on our Misheberach list for quite some time. Our wishes for good health are extended to Bonnie Brumfield, Carol Caplan, Faye Kushner, Patrice Kramer, Joan Newman, and Charles Silverman. We know that some of our congregants become ill, have surgery, or suffer an injury between The Shofar publications, so please know that we extend a prayer of comfort and continued recovery to those who are not specifically named.

Message from Ronnie Mand, Sisterhood President I know you have heard this before, but it’s always good to be reminded! A new fundraising project was inaugurated this year with our “Silver for Sisterhood” boxes. Many members and other congregants have diligently collected coins; several supporters are on round 2 or 3 with this simple, yet appreciated fundraiser. If you haven’t begun, I encourage you to take a box from the temple foyer and begin putting in change; when full, simply give it to Jo Ann who will tally your total. Your efforts will not only support Sisterhood, but ultimately some future temple project. We also ask for your support of the Sisterhood Building Fund. With the mantra “I’m only a phone call away”, Susanne will promptly send an acknowledgement for any life cycle event, or whatever you choose to celebrate, honor, or memorialize. While Sisterhood does not physically meet as a group over the summer, many of our projects are year round and your support is vital to their success. I wish each of you a wonderful summer.

Friday night services are scheduled for July 12th and August 16th to welcome Shabbat. Come at 7:30 p.m. to raise your voices in prayer and song.

Havdalah is a wonderful way to savor those last minutes of Shabbat. Come to the Howard’s home on July 27th for dessert beginning at 8:30 p.m., followed by a brief Havdalah service on the deck (weather permitting).

August 17th will be our celebration of Tu B’Av, the day of love. We’ll meet in the social hall at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck dairy dinner and social. It will be a wonderful evening! RSVP to Jo Ann by August 10th. A reminder flyer will be sent to you.

Our annual Congregational Meeting was held on May 29th. Thank you to all who attended. Congratulations to our officers and board members for 2019-2020. President – Jo Ann Howard Vice President – Michael Caplan Secretary – Sam Rippe Treasurer – Peter Howard Mira Becher, Sam Kushner, Susanne Singer

A Celebration Honoring Jean Carol Harper Vernon for her 60+ years of singing in our choir was held on Sunday, June 2nd from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The choir sang four pieces they felt were meaningful to Jean: “Hineh Mah Tov”, “Modim Anachnu Lach”, “Mi Chamochah” and “All the World Shall Come to Serve You”. Gary Tucker played a very meaningful solo by Mozart on his flute and Baxter Jennings played a delightful solo on the organ by Mendelssohn. Sam Kushner’s remarks gave a history of the period of time when Jean began in the choir and went on to include special highlights of her time with us. Barry Koplen read a poem he wrote for the occasion and made a personal presentation. In her honor a seat plaque was unveiled on the pew in which she sat for so many years. A beautiful Moreno glass treble clef (picture included above) was presented by Jo Ann Howard on behalf of the congregation. A special thank you goes to Ronnie Mand and Melanie Vaughan for lovely reception, to Faye Kushner for the flowers in the social hall and to a group of Jean’s friends for the flowers that graced the bema. A special thank you goes to the choir members Gary Grant, Marcy Heffinger, Baxter Jennings, Susanne Singer, and Gary Tucker for the numerous rehearsals and their beautiful musical presentations. And an additional thank you to Gary Grant for working on the program card, making sure it was perfect, and the very large fruit assortment on his grandmother’s silver tray. It was a perfect afternoon enjoyed by all and certainly a time of excitement for Jean.

Seven of us gathered at the Howard’s home on June 28 th for dessert and Havdalah. It was a wonderful time to be together and say our farewells to Shabbat with

Danville

The Danville Chapter of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, continues to be an inspiration to other and far larger chapters, with what we are able to accomplish with our small and far-flung membership. Invitations to our annual donor event went out in May, and if you have not yet sent a donation, I urge you to do so without delay! Checks may be mailed to Jo Ann Howard at 326 Rosemary Lane, Danville, VA 24541. I know! We’re always asking for money, right? And that would be annoying, except for the incredibly important work of Hadassah that your contributions support. One of the most recent accomplishments is the first advanced cardiac catheterization unit serving Jerusalem’s northern neighborhoods that was inaugurated at the Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital last month. Hadassah can now offer equal services for cardiac patients at Mount Scopus and the Ein Kerem campus. Both hospitals, of course, can boast of diverse staff and provide all patients with the best possible medical care, regardless of race, religion, or nationality. Hadassah is also helping to staff the hospitals, and to contribute to social justice in Israel, through a program of scholarships for Ethiopian students to study nursing at the Henrietta Szold – Hadassah School of Nursing at the Hebrew University. Ethiopian students often struggle to pass the standardized exams required for college admission. Hadassah’s pilot project, known as Achoteynu, allows them to bypass the exams if they complete two pre-academic preparatory programs; the scholarships pay for tuition, living expenses, and tutoring. Hadassah not only provides needed services, but with 300,000 members in every Congressional district in the country, continues to be in the forefront of advocating for women’s access to quality health care. In light of recent attempts in several states to severely restrict or deny abortion services, our National President, Ellen Hershkin, has again stated our firm support of reproductive justice: “I reaffirm Hadassah’s unwavering commitment to ensure that women – not elected officials or employers – control their own bodies and family planning decisions. Reproductive health choices, based on full and accurate medical information and guidance, must be made in accordance with a woman’s own religious, moral and ethical values.” For more information on how to make your voice heard on this and other issues, explore the Hadassah website at hadassah.org. As always, thank you for your ongoing support of the Danville Chapter of Hadassah! Best wishes for a happy 4th of July weekend, and enjoy these hazy, lazy days of summer. Martha Woody, President

Bouquets of thank yous go to each of you who have already sent in your Donor checks. We still have quite a ways to go to reach our $2,600 goal. I hope you will consider what Martha wrote in her article, remembering that your contributions are incredibly important to the work of Hadassah. Whether you joined this wonderful organization on your own or someone made you a member, you have a lifetime link to an organization that affects health and welfare worldwide. I hope you will write a check today and feel proud of the role you are playing in healthcare and research.

Just as the wild flower seeds have been sown in Israel to beautify the land We can sow seeds for healthy and productive lives with our Donor contributions!
