The Vietnam War was still in full fury when my husband was discharged and we left Sheppard Air Force base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he had been the chief of ophthalmology for two years, and headed home. “Home” was a bit problematic. We had grown up in the New York area, where our families still lived. We wanted to settle reasonably close to them, and to the city, but we also had specific preferences.

We knew we wanted a university community for its academic, cultural and worldly aspects. We wanted a top medical community, especially since I was about to give birth to our third child. We wanted a village with a sense of its own history and pride in its roots. We wanted a good school district. And not any less important, we wanted a beautiful place with great recreational activities, preferably near the water.

We found such a location and have lived here going on five decades. It has seldom disappointed, in part because of the presence of Stony Brook University. And even as we raised our family here and grew our careers, so did SBU grow in prestige and in

what it offers the community. In fact, the scope of its activities is probably beyond any one person’s ken.

To help you, our readers, see what is available on campus and off, that might further educate, amuse and enrich your lives, at whatever age and stage you find yourself, we have partnered with the university to bring you a comprehensive resource guide to their events and to our excellent shops and services. So enormous is the story they have to tell that we have divided the campus into two halves: east and west.

This publication, timed to be distributed at the beginning of the academic year, concentrates on the west or main campus, and describes its palette of rich offerings and schedules, including sports, lectures and performances to which the public is enthusiastically invited during the year. It also presents the outstanding local business community on the university’s doorstep.

Things to do at Stony Brook University

The Stony Brook campus, in addition to being a center of education and research, is a wonderful place for members of our community to come to relax, have fun or be entertained.

For a short respite from the hustle and bustle, take a walk on the Ashley Schiff Memorial Park Preserve next to Roth Pond. It’s a 26-acre island of tranquility studded with trees and plants in their natural environment. Nature lovers will also enjoy a guided tour of the Life Sciences Greenhouse. It’s a quarter-acre of breathtakingly beautiful plants and flowers from all over the world — more than 65 botanical families in all. Call 632-8524 for more information.

For a walk on the mild side, visit the Red Dragon labyrinth. Located between Mendelsohn Quad and the Student Union, this peaceful path is formed by spiraling rings of red mulch with a grass border. People who walk its 54feet find it helps ease stress and focus thoughts.

More active visitors may want to take a ride on the Paul Simons Memorial Bike Path. The six-mile long bike lane provides students, faculty, staff and visitors with a safe, sustainable alternative way to travel around the university and improve their fitness and aerobic health.

For Broadway-style shows, concerts, dance and films, the Staller Center is your ticket to first class entertainment. For more exotic fare, the Charles B. Wang Center dazzles visitors with cultural wonders from Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Stony Brook is also home to the best college sports on Long Island. The 20 varsity teams include NCAA champions in football, basketball, lacrosse and baseball.

Visit a dinosaur

You don’t have to travel to New York City to see a dinosaur. There is one right in the lobby of Stony Brook University’s Administration Building — the Majungasaurus crenatissimus. The exact replica of the Cretaceous meat eater is patched together from specimens unearthed on Madagascar by a team of Stony Brook University paleontologists, led by David Krause of the Department of Anatomical Sciences.

The fearsome skeleton has even acquired a nickname: ‘Stony Bones.’ Viewing of the dinosaur is free. Hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

• The Charles B. Wang Center The Charles B. Wang Center is an ideal setting for all types of events — staff meetings to receptions, seminars, presentations, conferences, exhibits and celebrations. Spacious and serene, it is one of the most beautiful and inventive buildings celebrating both Asian and American cultures.

In addition to a theater, lecture halls and traditional meeting spaces, the center features beautiful gardens, fountains and a chapel.

Art abounds at SBU

Throughout the campuses of Stony Brook University, art is everywhere. Paintings, sculptures, photographs and multimedia installations are featured in the university’s many galleries. The community is always welcome.

The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics The gallery in the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. For the fall, the gallery is planning the installation of the “Iconic Wall” in which a large feature wall in the center’s lobby will be engraved in limestone with key mathematical equations and diagrams. The artist of this wall, Christian White, will exhibit other works in a fall show in the gallery. For more information or to be added to the center’s mailing list, visit www.scgp.stonybrook.edu.

In addition to the gallery, the Simons Center features art all around the building, inside and out. Outside the entrance to the center is “Umbilic Torus,” a sculpture by artist Helaman Ferguson, which represents a “fusion of mathematics and art.” Inside the lobby, one wall features the work of Toby Buonagurio, professor of art at SBU. The artwork is titled “Earth, Air, Fire, Water” and is comprised of 11 enormous, unique, handmade, glazed and lustered, sculptural relief ceramic butterflies.

Student Activities Center The Student Activities Center Art Gallery, located on the first floor, is where students can directly participate in creative, artistic and community projects.

Students are encouraged to submit work for various art shows and actively engage with gallery events, music performances, lectures and presentations. It’s a showcase for the talented campus community. The Staller Center The Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, located in the Staller Center for the Arts, is currently being renovated and will open again in the spring of 2014.

Southampton Art The Avram Gallery is an integral part of the unique education offered at Stony Brook Southampton. The Avram Gallery features more than 1,000 square feet of 21st-century exhibit space and is an intimate setting where artists and art lovers can interact, both directly and through the inviting displays the gallery offers. The gallery is located in Chancellors Hall. For more information, call 632-5161.

Wang Center’s cultural offerings The Charles B. Wang Center is dedicated to presenting the public with a multifaceted, intellectually sound, and humane understanding of Asian and Asian-American cultures, and their relationship to other cultures.

The Wang Center serves as a conference facility and venue for cultural events, offering lectures, film, gallery shows, festivals and more. The center offers dozens of events each semester. Popular events held at the Wang Center include the Cherry Blossom Festival, held each spring. The annual event, entering its 14th year in 2014, features the exciting sounds of the Taiko drums, performances of Japanese dance and music and a wondrous array of Japanese crafts, tea ceremony and cultural events.

Also in the spring the center hosts the annual Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration, which includes cultural dances, musical and vocal performances, arts and crafts displays, a tea ceremony, photo exhibition and cultural and community workshops.

University Café announces fall schedule

The University Café, located in the Stony Brook Union, is available for a variety of programs, including the Sunday Acoustic Series, late evening entertainment programs and campus department gatherings. The Sunday Street Acoustic Series, co-sponsored

by WUSB-FM and produced by Professor Charlie Backfish, presents nationally and internationally touring artists who perform in the listening room setting of the University Café. The series runs from September to early June and is now in its eighth year. Past performers have included Graham Parker, Willie Nile, Susan Werner, Eric Andersen and Fairport Convention.

• Sunday, Sept. 15, 7 pm The Toy Hearts and Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks (co-bill). Presented in collaboration with the Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council.

The Toy Hearts and Lone Sharks kick off the new season at the café for an evening of rockin’ roots music. The Toy Hearts is a band from Birmingham, England, fronted by two sisters, Sophia and Hannah Johnson, and backed by their father, Stewart. Bluegrass, country and swing are the musical influences.

Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks have shared their “maximum rhythm ‘n’ twang” with Long Island since 1988. Their extensive repertoire of classic roots songs is complemented by Casey’s originals, which have found their way into television and film soundtracks, including “The Killing Season” starring Robert DeNiro. Blazing guitar and fullthroated vocals by Casey are backed by his fellow Sharks on sax, bass and drums.

Mary Gauthier emerged on the Boston music scene in the late 1990s, where she ran a Cajun restaurant, Dixie Kitchen, which eventually became the title of her first album. Her latest release is the “Live at Blue Rock” album featuring some new tracks and several favorites. Scott Nolan from Winnipeg, Canada, will open the show.

One of today’s top guitarists — occasionally referred to as a “fret monster” — Brooks Williams walks the line between blues and Americana, delivering groove-laden songs with an easy-going vocal style and monstrous guitar chops. “New Everything” is his brand new CD. Beaucoup Blue is the Philadelphia-based father and son duo of David and Adrian Mowry and are long-time café audience favorites. They move easily from classic blues to contemporary blues compositions of their own, blending two voices with guitars and dobro.

Coming from Prince Edward Island, in Canada’s Nova Scotia province, Tim Chaisson’s proficiency

on the fiddle saw him invited to become a member of and tour with of the contemporary Celtic group, Kindle, when he was only 14 years old. Subsequently, Chaisson recorded several solo albums and formed his own band, Morning Fold. Earlier this year he released his first international album of original songs, “The Other Side.” While Chaisson’s concert appearances include his original songs, he also pays homage to his musical heritage.

For his café return, he will again be joined by Koady Chaisson, who plays banjo, mandolin and bass guitar.

Provost’s Lecture series

The Provost’s Lecture Series at Stony Brook University has become a popular vehicle for supporting distinguished lecture visits to campus.

Past guest lecturers have included: Carolyn Porco, planetary scientist and leader of the imaging team for the Cassini mission to Saturn; Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Color Purple”; Richard Leakey, world-renowned anthropologist, activist and chair of Stony Brook’s Turkana Basin Institute; Alan Alda, actor, director, writer and founding member of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook; Brian Greene, noted physicist, string theorist and acclaimed author of “The Elegant Universe” and “The Fabric of the Cosmos”; and Ben Cohen, England Rugby World Cup Champion and founder of the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, dedicated to raising awareness of the damaging effects of bullying.

Exploring the mysteries of the mind

For the past 17 years, Stony Brook University’s Department of Neurobiology and Behavior has teamed with the Swartz Foundation to present the annual Mind/Brain Lecture series.

The Swartz Foundation’s scientific and philosophical perspective on theoretical neuroscience is that capabilities of the brain — from sensory perception to learning to consciousness — intrinsically derive from biophysical properties and anatomical pathways … the mind is the brain at work.

Recent neuroscience research has led to a better understanding of the relationship between the mind and the brain, requiring the collaboration of investigators from a wide range of disciplines: cognitive science, computer science, electrical engineering, mathematical physics and theoretical neurobiology, among others.

The Swartz Foundation and Stony Brook University present this ongoing lecture series to acquaint the university community and the public with current research in neuroscience.

Past topics have included a look at why people fall in love, how computers can help paralyzed people move, the link between genetics and autism and how neuroscience is changing our understanding of recovery of

consciousness after brain injuries.

For 2014, the university is proud to present William Newsome, professor of neuroscience at Stanford University, on Monday, March 31, 2014, at 4:30 pm at the Staller Center for the Arts. Newsome is also the cochair of Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Working Group, a recent initiative announced by the White House as part of a new Presidential focus aimed at revolutionizing our understanding of the human brain.

Lectures in Science and Engineering Established in 2012, the University Distinguished Lectures in Science and Engineering series forges connections between the Stony Brook University campus and the scientific community at the National Academies level.

The eminent professionals who come to Stony Brook to share their experiences are among the very best in their individual disciplines.

Last spring’s lecturers included Robert H. Grubbs, the Atkins Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology, who was awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work in metathesis.

This fall, the university welcomes Sylvester James Gates Jr., the John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, on Sept. 26, and Joseph DeSimone, Chancellor’s Eminent Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University, in November.

Port Jefferson is Seawolves Country

Port Jefferson Village has gone red and is officially Seawolves Country, partnering with Stony Brook University to promote village businesses and events to the community.

Visitors to the village are welcomed by “Port Jeff is Seawolves Country” banners hanging everywhere as well as SBU merchandise for sale in stores such as The East End Shirt Company. Many stores also accept Wolfie Wallet, enabling students to use their ID card as a debit card at on-campus and off-campus locations.

Meet Wolfie

Wolfie the Seawolf is the fun-loving mascot who loves Stony Brook athletics and promotes it around Stony Brook University and in the local community.

Wolfie has been a part of the Stony Brook family since 1995 — just a year after the SB varsity teams became known as the Seawolves. The fourth nickname in SB history, “Seawolves” was selected from a list of more than 200 possible names by a 32-person committee comprising students, alumni, faculty and administrators.

There’s no doubt that Wolfie is a celebrity — he was the 2009 Three Village Sportsman of the Year and a finalist for Best Mascot in the Long Island Press Best of Long Island 2011, 2012 and 2013 contests. He was also featured in the 2011 ESPN College Gameday commercial with fellow collegiate mascots and marched in New York City’s Columbus Day parade. Wolfie’s favorite activities are cheering at Stony Brook games and having fun with SB fans of all ages.

Nationally accredited child care on campus

Did you know that child care is available for your child on the Stony Brook University campus? Stony Brook Child Care Services Center is nationally accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, which means it has voluntarily undergone a comprehensive process of internal self-study and invited external review to verify compliance with the academy’s criteria for high-quality early childhood programs.

The center is open Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 6 pm, with various shifts available, and serves the local community as well as university, health sciences and medical center faculty staff and students.

The center is staffed by full-time professionals, assisted by part-time support staff and university students enrolled in the Psychology 448 Internship. Under the supervision of the staff, these carefully selected students work closely with the teachers in the classroom and attend weekly training.

One of the ways the center supports a low child-to-adult ratio is to invite students who have completed these courses with high marks to work as part-time support staff. The child-teacher ratio in the 3- to 5-year-old program is 7 to 1 and in the infant-toddler program is 4 to 1.

The center’s primary aim is to provide a warm, supportive and creative atmosphere. Each room is “family grouped,” enabling children to interact with others of different ages. Since children at this stage of their development “learn by doing,” there are plenty of hands-on activities that can build a child’s self-reliance.

The center cares for children from 8 weeks old to 3 years in the infant-toddler program and from 3 to 5 years in the preschool program.

Community music programs for kids Budding and aspiring musicians on Long Island can take advantage of conservatory-level instruction from outstanding faculty and the resources of a world-class university. The Community Music Program at Stony Brook University has grown to encompass all age groups and levels of musical experience.

• Music Basics for Kids (4-year-olds) In the Music Basics for Kids class, preschoolers learn the basics of pitch, rhythm and notation through games and exercises involving singing and physical movement. By developing their musicianship at an early age, students will be in a better position to begin their formal musical study with deeper understanding and skill. The class is taught by Dorothea Cook, a certified and licensed Dalcroze instructor.

• Dalcroze Eurhythmics Level I (Kindergarten and first grade) The first level of Dalcroze Eurhythmics emphasizes key Dalcroze subjects: simple and compound meters, rhythmic patterns, phrasing, ear training and musical notation. Using kinesthetic movement as the primary mode of learning, the Dalcroze pedagogy enables children to transfer their physical experiences to a conceptual understanding of music theory. The Level I curriculum, a two-year course of study, is taught by Dorothea Cook.

• Dalcroze Eurhythmics Level II (second to third grade) The advanced level of Dalcroze Eurhythmics is essential enrichment for students who have already begun formal instrumental study. The exercises and games in Level II develop advanced musicianship skills such as mixed meter, polyrhythm, notation in bass and treble clefs, conducting and rigorous ear training. This program is strongly endorsed by private instrumental teachers who appreciate the depth of musical understanding that Dalcroze students bring to their private lessons. The Level II curriculum, a two-year course of study, is taught by Dorothea Cook.

• Pre-College Division (sixth to 12th grades) The Pre-College Division offers coaching and performance opportunities in chamber music and a rich curriculum that includes composition, music theory and aural skills. Students enrolled in the program are already accomplished musicians in their schools who are looking for new, challenging and exciting experiences that are not offered anywhere else. An audition is required.

• Chamber Music Workshop Participants are placed in compatible chamber music groups and will meet with a coach for five sessions in preparation for a concert scheduled at the end of each semester. Groups are carefully assembled according to skill level and experience. The rehearsal location and times are scheduled at the mutual convenience of the coach and participants. In addition

The summer camps at Stony Brook

June 30 through Aug. 22, 2014 Summer at Stony Brook is the perfect combination of fun and learning for your child. Now entering its 14th year, the Summer Camps at Stony Brook University (June 30 through Aug. 22, 2014) offer a traditional day camp as well as themed academies, with something to suit every child’s interest (from playing outdoor games to crafts and cooking). The camp offers three-, four- or five-day options and campers can enroll in as little as two weeks of camp. The camp day runs from 9 am to 4 pm. Before and after care is available, too. Lunch, snack and one camp shirt are included in the price.

The Day Camp is open to children entering kindergarten through 10th grade. The program offers a balance of recreational and educational activities.

Camp Academies are open to children entering kindergarten through 11th grade. The academies are designed for the camper that has a specific interest in a particular program. These programs run for one or two weeks in the following categories: Acting; Baking; Band; Chess; Chess/Medical; Culinary; Dance; Exploration of Space; Forensics; Lego; Medical; Natural Sciences; and Photography. Campers can also choose to attend one of our very popular Game Builders Academies: Video Game Design; Programming; Fashion Design; Robotics; 3-D Modeling/ Animation; and VR Quest (virtual reality gamebuilding experience).

The staff of Summer Camps at Stony Brook University holds open houses throughout the winter and spring for families to check out the facilities and learn more about the offerings.

Dates will be posted in January.

The university also offers sport camps led by the head coaches of the champion Seawolves athletic teams. Camps include: basketball, lacrosse, soccer, football, baseball, volleyball, tennis, softball and track and field.

Learning at Any Age: The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Stony Brook University (formerly the Round Table) is open to all retired and semiretired individuals who are interested in expanding their intellectual horizons in a university setting.

Avenues for participation include: workshops, lectures, business meetings, committees, offices and social activities. The mostly peer-taught workshops, which carry no credits or prerequisites, are designed to offer an informal exchange of ideas between all participants within a framework of accomplishing the workshop objectives.

Th is program is administered by Stony Brook University’s School of Professional Development. Membership is required, which can be done online. A $290 annual membership fee

is charged, covering the academic year, September through June. Membership includes: registration in workshops for fall, spring and summer semesters; a monthly newsletter; special planned events and trips; and access to library facilities at Stony Brook.

The fall 2013 schedule of workshops is now online. Some samples of this year’s offerings include: Advanced Competitive Bridge, Composition in Photography, Mysticism in Everyday Life, Intermediate Calligraphy, Exploring the Metropolitan Museum, Watercolor Studio, Spanish for Beginners, The History of Cinema and Memoir Writing.

SBU’s Humanities Institute wins grants

The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook will benefit from a three-year, $1.2 million grant awarded to the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. As a member organization of CHCI, HISB has been chosen to participate in “Integrating the Humanities Across National Boundaries,” an initiative designed to foster new forms of collaborative research and partnerships among the organization’s international membership.

The grant will support two large-scale pilot projects through 2015: Humanities for the Environment and Religion, Secularism and Political Belonging. The major objective of these endeavors is to foster innovative programmatic ideas and new forms of collaborative research across national, regional and disciplinary boundaries, driven by and involving CHCI’s membership of more than 180 humanities centers and institutes. The project will help to identify new priorities and potential roles for CHCI, and explore the ways in which a networked consortium can foster scholarly innovation in the humanities on a global scale.

The Stony Brook team is spearheaded by Professor E. Ann Kaplan, distinguished professor of English and cultural analysis and theory, and also director of the HISB. With this grant support, the HISB will host 11 environmentally themed events in the fall of 2013. The most significant events in the fall roster are the visits of Ramachandra Guha, Elizabeth Kolbert, Sandra Steingraber and Kongjian Yu, all of whom are “stars” in the field of environmental humanities, environmental injustice and the poor. Additionally, HISB anticipates hosting many more events during the three-year lifespan of the grant.

School of Journalism continues popular lecture series

Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism is getting ready for another semester featuring lectures with the world’s top journalists as well as renowned researchers.

My Life As Three times each semester, top-echelon journalists take part in the My Life As series and answer questions about struggle and success: how they got started, how they keep going and how they got the big stories. Past speakers have included Pulitzer prize-winning cartoonist Walt Handelsman and CBS’s Michelle Miller.

Since 2006, SBU has welcomed more than 48 prominent journalists from a variety of different publications.

The My Life As lectures are free to attend.

The school also inaugurated the Marie Colvin Distinguished Lecture Series in 2013. CNN chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour was the first speaker, and other speakers will follow in the years to come to help support the mission of the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting in the School of Journalism.

Science on Tap The mission of Science on Tap is to demystify scientific

topics and open the gates of Stony Brook University for a free evening of enticing conversation — over a beer!

A scientist walks into a bar, sits down with a former producer of “60 Minutes,” orders a beer and talks to a live audience. No punch line here! This is Science on Tap, an award-winning project of Stony Brook’s Center for Communicating Science.

Science on Tap is hosted by Steven Reiner, formerly of “60 Minutes,” who is a professor at SBU’s School of Journalism. SBU professors join him to discuss their research in a fun and interactive way. Past speakers have included Alfredo Fontanini, Neurobiology and Behavior, discussing food, flavor and feelings; Chang Kee Jung, Department of Physics and Astronomy, the physics of sports; and Mary Kritzer, Neurobiology and Behavior, ADHD and the brain.

CNN chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour is one of the many journalist who have lectured as part of the School of Journalism outreach programs.

Science Open Nights series Stony Brook University began free science lectures geared to the general public in fall 1973 with talks given for the arrival of Comet Kohoutek. As a special treat for the 40th anniversary, Comet ISON will fly by the sun this fall and will hopefully shine bright for an upcoming viewing during an Astronomy Open Night.

The Science Open Night lectures — held most Fridays during the semester — are grouped into four categories: Astronomy Open Night (first Friday of the month); The World of Physics (second Friday of the month), The Living World (third Friday of the month), and Geology Open Night (fourth Friday of the month). The lectures are by faculty on various aspects of their particular dicipline, most commonly on their own research or some topic of public interest.

Note that there is no lecture on Sept. 6 and during January.

On Nov. 1, an Astronomy Open Night, Rouven Essig, assistant professor of physics, C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, topic to be announced. On May 2, Michael Zingale, associate professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy (topic to be announced) will speak.

Career Development Courses and Certificate Programs • Accounting — Foundations of Accounting Methods and Advanced Accounting: two six-session courses that explore accounting principles and how they apply to current business situations.

Serving our veterans: The Long Island State Veterans Home The Long Island State Veterans Home is a special place veterans are proud to call home while receiving rehabilitation, during their stay as long-term residents, or where they can spend their day as a participants in the Adult Day Health Care Program.

The LISVH is operated by Stony Brook Medicine. Through this relationship, LISVH is able to provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive medical, nursing and ancillary services. The LISVH provides a full-time medical director and a staff of full-time double boarded-certified physicians in internal medicine and geriatrics. Its doctors have access to an in-house pharmacy operated

by Certified Geriatric Pharmacists, providing a comprehensive formulary. With a full complement of registered nurses on duty 24 hours a day and an on-site certified nursing assistant training program, the LISVH remains attentive to residents’ skilled nursing needs.

Services The Long Island State Veterans Home offers: • Full-time physicians with double board certifications in internal medicine and geriatrics • A full array of rehabilitation services that includes physical, occupational, respiratory and speech therapies • An on-site pharmacy staffed with a full compliment of certified geriatric pharmacists • Additional on-site services including dentistry, optometry, opthalmology, podiatry, audiology, and geriatric psychiatry and psychology

• A team of licensed clinical social workers and comprehensive counseling services • A 55-bed Respiratory Care Unit for those oxygen-dependent residents and those requiring additional respiratory needs, including tracheostomy care • The Ref lections Unit: A 55-bed secured unit caring for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia-related disorders • Wound care • Individualized dietary programs • Therapeutic recreation • Pastoral care • Palliative care and hospice services • Barber and beauty shop • On-site Medicaid coordinator and VA benefits counselor.

Adult Day Health Care Caring for a physically or cognitively impaired family member at home, 24-hours per day, 7-days per week, can be one of life’s most difficult challenges. Whether you are a spouse or a caregiver, the Adult Day Health Care at LISVH may be a welcome solution. Participants at the Adult Day Health Care program receive the skilled nursing care they require while enabling them to continue to live at home. Adult Day Health Care permits caregivers to meet professional and family obligations or take a well-deserved rest while their loved one attends the program.

SBU students: a force for good in the community No matter where you look in the local communities, you’ll find Stony Brook University students giving, volunteering and lending a hand to their neighbors. In fact, the next time you see a group of young men and women pitching in to help with a community project, more likely than not they will be from the SBU campus.

For example, Stony Brook students raised $5,000 for superstorm Sandy relief efforts during a six-week fundraising campaign through Tis the Season. Every year, the charity fundraiser collects money from students, primarily from the residence halls, to purchase gifts for children of underprivileged families. It was in full swing when Sandy hit, so this year it was decided that the funds raised should be for those in need of repairing their homes and lives in an effort to return to normalcy.

A group of Stony Brook students helped register 118 of their fellow classmates to become organ donors in conjunction with Organ Donor Awareness Month.

Others created a bone marrow registry, swabbing 841 students to be registered as potential donors.

Student volunteers also helped clean up Sunken Meadow Park as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s second annual I Love My Park Day. And 30 undergraduate volunteers removed trash at the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station, along with tree limbs and other debris that remained after Superstorm Sandy. The group also helped improve the look of the station by pruning bushes and installing new plantings.
