Bishop of Basingstoke pleased with job so far NOW the Easter break is over and he has over half a year of service under his belt, the Bishop of Basingstoke has declared his affection for the town and his wonder for Hampshire. The Reverend Canon David Williams was consecrated in a huge service in Winchester Cathedral last September which attracted over 1,200 people. And since then, after spending a lot of time in the town, driving through “probably” every road in the county and successfully fi nishing his fi rst Holy Week here, he says that he could not be happier. “There is a huge optimism about Basingstoke,” said Rev Williams. “There is a vibrancy about the way it is going to grow.” He continued: “I have really enjoyed it – I have had the chance

to engage with a huge number of people and places.” Rev Williams has served in the Diocese for 13 years and was announced as the new bishop last June. He was previously the Vicar of Christ Church in Winchester, so is familiar with Hampshire. But he is still in awe at the county. “I have probably driven in every road in Hampshire and I have now realised how beautiful it is,” he said. “It feels like being on holiday on the right day.” His fi rst Holy Week in the town has been “memorable” too. Rev Williams said: “I went to Winchester Prison to take part

in a Good Friday service.” “The chapel was full and it was amazing how quiet and thoughtful the congregation was. “I thought – there is something deeply spiritual going on in this chapel.” The Bishop – who grew up in East Africa – is responsible for 194 churches. Around 30 of them are in Basingstoke. Although he is a Church of England bishop, Rev Williams does not want this to be anyway limiting and he has been in contact with other church leaders in the town. “The key is to work together with other churches for the common good – not just C of E churches,” he said. “Basingstoke is a town of huge potential and I’m looking forward to being a part of its • The Reverend Canon David Williams (right) with Bishop of growth,” he added. Eggtastic Easter fashion show hits ’Stoke CHILDREN at a Basingstoke nursery had a colourful, arty, egg-filled week in the run up to Good Friday – as well as the chance to display some snazzy hats. Kiddi Caru nursery in Broadmere Road provided the children aged up to five with plenty

of activities to get them in the Easter spirit. The kids took part in an Easter egg hunt around the nursery and its garden area and got to put their craft skills to the test with bunny ear making activities, boiled egg decorating and creating their own Easter eggs.

To top it all off, the children then paraded the Easter bonnets they had made in the garden area – which they were particularly proud of. Nursery manager Suzanne Chilvers said: “Easter is such a colourful time of year and we wanted to bring that into the

nursery as much as possible. She continued “The children’s Easter bonnets were fabulous – they always put so much effort into making them and I am sure we had one of the brightest

Easter bonnet parades in the country.” • Children at the nursery showing off the hats they had made for Easter

And Edward Ashdown, 19,

a former member of the East Hampshire Youth Council, chaired the debate. After the debate, students could vote again and it was clear that many had been swayed. A total of 22 students voted for the age to be lowered, while five voted no and three abstained. Alton Town Council’s community and events manager, Linda Munday, said: “This shows the power of a very good debate to change people’s views.” “I have been very impressed with the way students have put their ideas across and how well they can formulate persuasive arguments.” “I am sure some of the students here today will be the politicians of tomorrow.”

News Bites Next meeting WHITCHURCH: The next scheduled meeting of Whitchurch Town Council will be on April 13. The full council will meet and so will the development committee. The meeting will take place in the Town Hall in Newbury Street from 7.30pm.

Candidates contest SO what will you do on May 7? You will be choosing the next Member of Parliament (MP) who will be the lawmaker for the town. Depending on which candidate receives the most votes, they

will be go into the House of Commons in Westminster to make important decisions about the country. Candidates represent a constituency – an area of voters – and your constituency is Basingstoke.

“I know that the job of an MP is to be there for everyone.”

Paul Harvey PARTY: Labour AGE: 40 WITH PARTY: 21 years JOB: Lecturer for the Open University and selfemployed communications consultant LIVES: Ruskin Close, Black Dam HOBBIES: Movies, football, history, writing and real ale POLITICAL HERO: John Smith

ON May 7 you have the power to change the face of politics in Basingstoke. Maria Miller has broken her contract with the people of our town. I believe passionately that we need a local constituency MP who puts the job of representing our town and everyone in it at the heart of everything they do. Politics has such a bad reputation and people are angry at MPs. However, politics has to mean something more to us all. We have to tackle the issues everyone is facing, and I want to engage with as many people as I can in our town. I want to stand up and be counted on climate change, on saving the NHS, on quality teaching in the classroom and on creating jobs and appren-

ticeships. I also want to fight for housing that people can afford to live in and childcare that parents can afford. I care about the future of our town. I’ve lived in Basingstoke for 13 years and whether it is being there for people in the Buckskin floods, helping people fi nd a home, fighting the cuts that have hurt some of the most vulnerable in our community, I know that the job of an MP is to be there for everyone. To be a champion for our town. I’m passionate about Basingstoke. It’s neck and neck between myself and Maria – a vote for any other party lets her win, and we deserve better. Together we can make change happen on May 7.

In the general election on May 7, you will choose the MP you want to represent Basingstoke in Parliament. Maria Miller was the MP for Basingstoke from 2005 until parliament was dissolved on March 30.

“Basingstoke is a great place to live and I want to help keep it that way.”

Maria Miller PARTY: Conservatives AGE: 51 WITH PARTY: 32 years JOB: Member of Parliament and previously company director in business LIVES: Mapledurwell HOBBIES: My three children, cycling, growing my own fruit and vegetables POLITICAL HERO: Margaret Thatcher

THIS General Election is the most important for a generation. The choice is clear: stick with the Conservatives’ longterm plan that’s working or return to the chaos of Labour with more spending, borrowing and debt. By cutting the deficit in half, Conservatives have provided Basingstoke families with help to recover from the recession: freezing Council Tax for five years, freezing fuel duty, cutting income tax for thousands, with almost 4,000 taken out of income tax altogether. There have been improvements to services too: these include a new Rooksdown school, £35million for roads and plans for a new NHS Hospital. We can’t put this at risk. In my 2020 vision for Basingstoke there is nothing more important than a thriving NHS.

But we need a strong economy to pay for a strong NHS. In Greece and Spain where their deficit wasn’t tackled, health spending has been cut. Here, the NHS spending has increased and will continue to increase every year under a Conservative government. By 2020 I want thousands more Basingstoke families securing a home of their own through ‘Help to Buy’, doubling the number of fi rst time buyers. And only Conservatives will give an EU In-Out referendum, as well as continuing to cut immigration that got out of control under Labour. I’m a working mum living in Mapledurwell. I want to serve this community as your local Member of Parliament because Basingstoke is a great place to live and I want to help keep it that way.

Candidates contest will be go into the House of Commons in Westminster to make important decisions about the country. Candidates represent a constituency – an area of voters – and your constituency is Basingstoke.

SO what will you do on May 7? You will be choosing the next Member of Parliament (MP) who will be the lawmaker for the town. Depending on which candidate receives the most votes, they

“I want to use my work experience to help the next generation.

Janice Spalding PARTY: Liberal Democrats AGE: 53 WITH PARTY: 10 years JOB: Software engineer/IT consultant LIVES: Bramley HOBBIES: Hockey, community activities, jigsaw puzzles, reading POLITICAL HERO: Charles Kennedy

WHEN people ask me - Why are you doing this? I think to myself I have reached a certain age when I want to use my work experience to help the next generation to have a good opportunity, training and be able to enjoy life. Why? I am a Software Engineer and I see there is a big problem looming. Let me explain, when I started work for a UK Software company the average age of the company was 25, I was then 23. Today the average age of where I work now is 55, I am 53. If someone leaves the company it now takes an average of nine months to fi nd a replacement, and that is if you can fi nd a replacement. The company is restricted to employing UK citizens only (for

security reasons). This recruitment process is extremely expensive for the business and having shortfalls in staff does affect the service offered to customers. This would explain UK companies recruiting from abroad. So how can we fi x this? We have to invest in training and schools, and not have this endless fi xation about testing and league tables. Having qualified teachers in subjects they know about. Teaching life skills, so our children know what to expect in the world of work. For my last company I was a graduate mentor and experienced fi rst hand what these bright kids had not been taught. This is a problem, I am an engineer, I want to fi x it.

Hard water is something we are all used to in Hampshire, although most of us have got used to putting up with it, many do not realise that you can do something about it. It furs up our heating systems, causing breakdowns, makes it more expensive to heat our homes and damages our appliances. The other problem with limescale is the constant cleaning of showerheads, shower screens, stainless steel sinks, the whole house can suffer where hard water is concerned. Limescale aggravates skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis. With a water softener no limescale will get into the house, which means you will have to do less cleaning, stop buying limescale related products, cut washing powder use by up to 75% and have less chance of large bills for potential future problems with your heating system and appliance breakdowns. If you were to purchase an ordinary softener you would have quite a large machine, which requires you to set clocks and lug around a 25kg bag of salt. The

In the general election on May 7, you will choose the MP you want to represent Basingstoke in Parliament. Maria Miller was the MP for Basingstoke from 2005 until parliament was dissolved on March 30.

I RUN Squirrels Antiques in Basingstoke, it is a family business that has run out of the same shop in the centre of Basingstoke for decades. Basingstoke is in my blood. I intend to concentrate my work on issues nationally that affect us locally. I will be a constituency MP. Most nationally led initiatives have unintended local consequences, like rubbish collections and recycling regulations that encourage more and more fly tipping. These regulations need the input from someone with common sense. I will push for better business in Basingstoke. Getting better quality of manufacturing and other industry to Basingstoke will increase career opportunities locally. The national trend towards a low wage economy must be

reversed. House and lifestyle affordability depends on decent wages. Bring back council controlled council housing. Sounds simple and it should be. Manydown and other local housing schemes should be built, managed and maintained by the local council for local people. I will publish my expenses on my website each and every month, they will be fair and reasonable. I will not need a second home, Basingstoke is 45 minutes out of London, there is no excuse for any Basingstoke MP to have a taxpayer funded second home nearer than here. Ukip have had an office in Church Street, Basingstoke for a couple of years now, we encourage people to pop in and meet us for a chat. We have opened a campaign Shop on Wote Street too.

TwinTec S3 is different. It is small, requires no electricity and uses block salt ( like two house bricks) instead of heavy 25kg bags. Harvey Softeners has been manufacturing softeners in this area for more than 35 years. Kevin Goody ( UK Water Softeners) is one of Harveys top TwinTec dealers and was voted number two in the country last year.

Why is Kevin so successful? He puts it down to extensive marketing, having a great plumber with over 30 years of experience installing water softeners, good customer satisfaction and recommendations. Kevin has installed 4800 water softeners in homes in this area over the last twenty years and arranges everything from initial survey to installation. Kevin Goody also welcomes trade enquiries. We also service & repair Kinetico Water Softeners.

Little Jack proves he is a fighter in cancer battle HE is thought to be the youngest boy in the UK diagnosed with testicular cancer. At only nine years of age he has already had two cycles of chemotherapy and an operation to have his right testicle removed. But Popley youngster Jack Bristow has proved he is a fighter in every sense of the word. The Merton Junior School Pupil went with family and friends to a mixed martial arts fighting event on March 28 courtesy of Ultimate Fighting Championship winner, Jeremy ‘Bad Boy’ Bailey. Mr Bailey, a promoter who has fought in tournaments before, arranged for the Bristow family to come along to the event in Aldershot for free to watch an England versus Poland cagefighting tournament. But Jack got the surprise of a lifetime when he was called to walk into the arena while everyone applauded him – stealing the spotlight like the fighter he is. Jack said: “It was really cool, I felt like a fighter. “I had my own music too! His mother Joanne said: “The whole event was such a shock for us. “During the whole night, people treated Jack like royalty. “Jack was able to walk into the arena as if he was a fighter him-

self – he absolutely loved it. “The whole place went mental.â€? An estimated ÂŁ1,200 was raised at the event – to pay for the family to take Jack to see his favourite team, Liverpool Football Club, play. Money will also be donated to the children’s cancer ward at Southampton General Hospital, where he is being treated for cancer. Jack was diagnosed with a testicular cancer germ cell tumour in December. Doctors made the shock discovery after he was rushed to hospital following a kick to the groin while playing football at school. After two cycles of gruelling chemo and having his testicle removed in January, Jack has proved that he is not willing to be held down and has kept a smile throughout – with a great help from the Popley community. Next week the family will head to Southampton General Hospital where they will fi nd out if Jack is in remission and if he will no longer need any more chemotherapy treatment. • Jack with former fighter Jeremy Bailey

Vampire alert: At last a job for you! On Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th April Geopace Training are returning to Oxford with their ever popular phlebotomy training course. Phlebotomists are the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. There are no entry requirements or qualiďŹ cations to start working as a trainee phlebotomist and many people enter the profession when they are looking for a career change. “We train people from all walks of life and all agesâ€? comments Jennie Eagleton, ofďŹ ce manager. “We’ve had bricklayers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as unemployed, school leavers and retiredâ€? says Jennie. “JobCentre Plus often put people on our courses tooâ€?. It’s a little known fact that there are no formal qualiďŹ cations for phlebotomists, who routinely work in GP Surgeries, Hospitals and Clinics. Once on the NHS healthcare career ladder ambition often drives many to progress to working in the labs. Many hundreds of Geopace trainees are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and some have chosen to work abroad where, like the UK, there is a shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. If you love or have ever fancied a career in healthcare and like the idea of the job security offered by the NHS then this may be just the job for you. Training

takes place over two full days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certiďŹ cate. “We practice on artiďŹ cial armsâ€?, says Jennie. “And all our students have a lot of fun learning. We get a great deal of satisfaction when we later learn that they are working in their local hospital or GP Surgeryâ€?. If you would like to know more about phlebotomy as a career then visit Geopace’s website at www.geopace. com. A link to the NHS jobs guide for phlebotomists is also available on the site. To enrol on the April course you can book online or book by telephoning the ofďŹ ce on 01525 713377.

New canoe clubhouse BASINGSTOKE and Deane Canoe Club has opened its £390,000 new clubhouse. The clubhouse opened on the banks of the Basingstoke Canal at Colt Hill Wharf in Odiham at the end of last month. The club’s paddlesport development officer, Janella Mansell, said: “The new clubhouse will enable more people to join in the paddling activities on a weekly basis now that the number of people who can participate is not restricted by the number of boats that can be transported on trailers.” The new building means the club can store all their equipment next to the canal rather than moving it from different parts of Basingstoke. Planning permission for the clubhouse which has a boat store, changing rooms and club room, was granted in 2008. Work on building the new clubhouse started in March last year and was fi nished by October. The council’s deputy leader Ranil Jayawardena, attended the opening ceremony with residents and club members and enjoyed an afternoon of paddling on the canal. It was funded by Hart District Council, Sport England, British Canoeing, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and the Hampshire Playing Fields Association. The club formed in 1987 to give people in the town a chance to canoe and kayak on the Basingstoke Canal.

WIN tickets to see The Audience in London’s West End WIN tickets to see Kristin Scott Thomas in a new version of Peter Morgan’s smash-hit play, directed by Stephen Daldry. The critically acclaimed production returns to the West End for a limited season from 21 April 2015. For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.

Sudoku

The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called “boxes”, “blocks”, “regions”, or “sub-squares”) contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which for a well-posed puzzle has a unique solution.

Bringing wordplay back with quick wit KNOWN for his witty puns and quick oneliners delivered with little emotion, expect to laugh when comedian Stewart Francis arrives at The Anvil next Saturday, April 18. A regular face on the BBC2 TV panel show ‘Mock the Week’, the Canadian comic is travelling around the UK as part of his ‘Pun Gent’ tour until December. “Remembering all the gags in the right order is the tricky part of my style of comedy,” Stewart told the Observer. “I approach it the way I do a script, so there are chunks that lead on to other bits while one joke will tell

me that I’m at the end of a certain chunk. “It’s the only way I can do it. “However, the beauty of being a oneliner guy is that while there’s a flow, I could still pop a joke in from the middle of nowhere that I might have forgotten to do earlier and it won’t be distracting: it’s just another one-liner.” During an entertainment career lasting 25 years, Stewart has written for American TV talk show legend Jay Leno, appeared in various British television shows such as ‘Not Going Out’, and hosted game shows back in his native Canada. But the entertainer has found his feet with stand-up comedy. He also hopes that his latest show will follow the footsteps of his two previous sell-out UK tours. “Coming over to the UK eight years

ago was the real turning point professionally for me,” Stewart explained. “I’d been coming over for years as a part-time player but being here permanently lifted me to the level that I always felt I was destined for. “It wasn’t happening in Canada because there’s not really a star system there, so the talented people have to go further afield to ply their trade.” He added: “For me, comedy works with the element of surprise, so I like doing a couple of kitten jokes and then something dark, as that catches people off-guard and is beneficial to the joke. “I don’t deliberately go looking for a dark joke as they come up as and when. “You as an audience member don’t have an idea about my take on a particular subject matter; if you take a step back and look at the joke, you’ll see that it’s just wordplay.” Starting at 8pm, tickets cost £19.50 with the show suitable for anyone over the age of 16.

An adventure with Flinn ONE big adventure will be unravelling at The Haymarket when ‘Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs’ arrive in Basingstoke. The show, based on the popular children’s book written by Giles Andreae, will be at the Churchill Way theatre for three productions next Tuesday, April 14, and Wednesday, April 15. When dinosaur-loving Flinn enters the school cupboard with two friends, they meet a very nervous Captain Stubble, whose ship has been stolen by pirate dinosaurs. The team go on an adventure to reclaim the ship, battle the dinosaurs and try and get back home just in time for tea. Director/producer James Seager told the Observer: “I’m extremely privileged to be part of this. “It’s fantastic to see the reaction from the children during the show and to see how involved they can become. “We have also had children re-visit the show with parents, emailing and asking us when we are coming back. “So I’m incredibly privileged.” Performed by the Les Petits Theatre Company, the book was published in June 2008, and has become one of the most successful children’s books in

recent times. Its adaptation to the stage has also received rave reviews. The theatre company is currently embarking on a four-month UK tour. “Our show encourages children to experience theatre in a safe environment and promote the idea that theatre can be inclusive, entertaining and fun as well as educational,” James explained. “It’s really crucial to expand the imagination and inspire creativity.” He added: “I think there is something in this show for the whole family, whether it’s the songs, the jokes or simply adults being amazed by our huge dinosaurs, designed by Max Humphries, the puppetry designer on Cirque de Soleil. “And the songs in the production are very catchy so they will be humming those for days!” Tickets cost £13 and the show is suitable for children over the age of three. “A baby is abandoned on a deserted railway platform, there is a young woman who decides to give up her baby and an older woman who finds it. A decision that derails and changes the direction of both their lives. 2015. A re-opened heritage railway station. When Liz receives an unexpected message, she is presented with the chance to live a life she rejected decades ago. This could be her moment; this could be just what she’s been waiting for. But should she first reveal the secret she has kept for twenty-one years? 1994. A railway station facing closure. Catherine is eagerly waiting for her new life to begin but an unexpected visitor forces her towards an unfamiliar destination and a future she did not anticipate. Twenty-one years later, she returns to the same railway station and is confronted by the past she has turned her back on. At the centre of both plays is Tom, the model railway enthusiast. Tom, who’s been reading other people’s letters. Tom who’s also Sam. Using a range of theatrical styles and storytelling devices, this quirky and playful ensemble piece tells the story of our relationship to the past and to the future and the constantly changing nature of our hopes and dreams. The abandoned railway lines, heritage stations and derelict platforms of Hampshire’s railway history form the backdrop of this new play.” http://www.phoenixarts.co.uk/

Ford celebrate EcoBoost Engine milestone FORD Motor Company are celebrating a manufacturing milestone for its fuel-saving EcoBoost petrol engines this year, as five million have been produced globally since the engine line was launched back in 2009. First used in Europe one year after its inception, EcoBoost-equipped vehicles last year accounted for one in four new Ford vehicles sold in the region, with the most popular engine proving to be the 1.0-litre EcoBoost. In 2014, it was also the fi rst engine to be named as International Engine of the Year three times in a row. Over the last five years, more than 230,000 Ford vehicles sold in Europe were equipped with the 1.0-litre engine that is now available in 10 different models - from Fiesta to Mondeo. Vice-president product development, Ford of Europe Joe Bakaj said: “Ford EcoBoost delivers great performance with lower fuel bills, a recipe which is proving incredibly popular with consumers in Europe and around the world. “EcoBoost engines have proved a gamechanging technology that are attracting new customers to the Ford brand every day.”

REVIEW: Ford Fiesta

By James Richings Downsized EcoBoost engines combine surprising power with excellent fuel efficiency through direct fuel injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing. Available in Europe in the Fiesta Red and Black Edition models since last year, Ford’s 140 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost is the most powerful 1.0-litre volume production car engine ever, with EcoBoost technology also powering the all new Ford Mustang. The new 314 PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine accounted for half of all models configured online during Mustang’s fi rst month. The five millionth vehicle to be produced was a 1.0-litre Ford Focus that rolled off the assembly line at the Michigan Assembly Plant, in the United States. This most recent production milestone constitutes another step forward in the One Ford plan to drive innovation across the company’s global product portfolio. • The Ford Fiesta

Collard takes victory in BTCC opening round Luckless Wintney beaten, while Whitchurch and Calleva grab wins HARTLEY Wintney endured a miserable Easter weekend, as they lost their games against Westfield and Knaphill 3-1 and 2-1 respectively. It’s been a tough end to the Combined Counties Premier season for Wintney, who have suffered defeat in eight of their last 11 matches after a disappointing spell of results. They are currently ninth in the standings with 50 points, five behind Epsom & Ewell in eighth and four ahead of 10thplaced Farnham Town. There was better luck for Whitchurch United over the weekend, as they picked up four points in the Wessex Premier Division. Saturday saw them draw 1-1 at home with Totton & Eling, before beating Andover Town 2-1 on Monday. They stay fi fth in the standings with 67 points, and are within three of next-placed AFC Portchester. And Tadley Calleva put in two strong performances as they enjoyed comfortable victories in both of their Easter games. They beat Pewsey Vale 5-2 on Saturday, before defeating Fleet Spurs 4-1 on Monday to keep them in title contention. They closed the gap to Wessex First Division leaders Team Solent to four points, after their Southampton rivals didn’t play over the weekend. Wintney next face Hanworth Villa at home and Whitchurch travel to Blackfied & Langley on Saturday, while Calleva have the weekend off.

ROB Collard made the best possible start to his British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) season in race one on Sunday at Brands Hatch, although the rest of the day didn’t go his way. The Hook-based driver won the fi rst race of the day after overtaking his team-mate Andy Priaulx halfway through.

By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk

But tyre problems in race two saw him plummet down the order to 16th, before being pitched into a spin at the fi rst corner on lap one of race three to put him out of the running.

Collard started fi fth in race one, but made a fast start to overtake the three Volkswagens ahead of him to jump up to second. He then stayed with his teammate Priaulx, who was running the soft tyres, for the fi rst half of the race. As Priaulx began to struggle with his faster-degrading tyres,

Collard forced his way through on the start/fi nish straight and held off the challenge from Aron Smith’s VW to take the win. “First blood is absolutely key in this championship – to go out and command a victory like that is a great feeling,” said Collard. “Overtaking Andy felt good too – I know he’s my team-mate but overtaking a world champion is always going to feel pretty special. “I’ve got the most experience in this car and went a different direction to the other guys on tyre choice and it’s defi nitely paid off. “I could see Andy was struggling and had to make the move before I came under pressure from behind. “Any victory in the BTCC is a big deal, it’s been an epic day.” Collard’s troubles in the second and third races meant that despite leading the championship after race one, he ended the day 10th in the standings. His 21 points – all scored in the fi rst race – puts him just 16 points adrift of early leader Matt Neal after an extremely competitive fi rst day of action. The next three races are on April 19 at Donington Park. • Rob Collard leads the way in race one (picture courtesy of btcc.net)

Rose ready for Masters challenge NORTH Hampshire golfer Justin Rose was back in action at the weekend, as he finished tied 37th at the Shell Houston Open in Texas. Rounds of 69, 68, 72 and 72 meant Rose fi nished on seven under par, nine adrift of tournament winner J.B. Holmes. Rose had been three shots closer as he came to the fi nal hole in round four, but a triple bogey after fi nding the water with his fi rst shot dropped him down the order. It meant he fi nished tied with American golfers Ben Crane, Chez Reavie and Scott Brown, along with Spain’s Sergio Garcia,

at the end of Sunday. And it was his last tournament before the Masters – the fi rst major of the year – which gets underway on Thursday. Rose has enjoyed strong results at the Masters in recent years, coming tied 14th in last year’s event and tied for eighth in 2012. His personal best at the Augusta course came in 2007, as he shared fi fth place. Sport Bites ’Stoke return RUGBY: Basingstoke RFC play their penultimate game of the season this Saturday, away to league leaders Wimbledon. It has been a miserable second half of the season for ’Stoke, after they saw their relegation fate confirmed last weekend. ’Stoke haven’t won since the start of January, and they lost their last encounter with Wimbledon by four points back in December. Their last game of the season sees them make the long trip south-east to Dover on April 18.

Ladies in final FOOTBALL: Basingstoke Town Ladies have made the final of the Chairman’s Cup, after they beat Parley Sports Ladies 3-0 on Sunday. A Tracy Jones brace and a goal from Lindsey Beverley put Town on their way to victory to progress in the competition. The result means that Basingstoke will play Fleet Town Ladies in the final, taking place on May 17. Their next game sees them host Southern Region Premier league leaders Maidenhead United, who have won all 13 of their games so far this season.

Last match HOCKEY: Basingstoke Hockey Club take on Chichester in their last league match of the season on Saturday. It’s been a strong year for Basingstoke, and they are currently fourth in the standings with 39 points. However they are too far behind third-placed Epsom to jump up a position. In the last encounter between the two sides on October 18, Basingstoke thrashed Chichester 6-1 at home.

Bison thrashed ICE HOCKEY: It was a day to forget for Basingstoke Bison Ladies on Saturday, as they were demolished 12-1 away to league leaders Swindon Topcats. Bison sit seventh in the Women’s National South Division 1 standings, having scored seven points from their nine games so far. They will be hoping for an improved performance when they take on eighth-placed Cardiff Comets at home this Saturday evening.

Two wins keep Town in the running BASINGSTOKE Town enjoyed a happy Easter after they won both of their games over the weekend to stay in the hunt for the Conference South title. Saturday’s trip to Hayes & Yeading United resulted in a 1-0 win, before they beat Farnborough 3-1 at home on Monday. The results mean that Basingstoke are just two points behind league leaders Boreham Wood and second-placed Bromley, and have a game in hand over the former. Their game against Hayes & Yeading on Saturday was particularly memorable, as Town managed to fi nd a goal despite only having nine men on the

But a penalty for the Dragons with five minutes to go after Nathan Smart was brought down in the box, subsequently scored by Chris Flood, meant that the visitors picked up a crucial win in their title fight. ough was more straightforward, and Simon Dunn opened the scoring within half an hour. Farnborough did go level soon after the break through CJ Fearn, but Town were quickly back in the lead after EnverMarum converted a penalty. Jamie Brown made a welcome return to competitive action having been ruled out for three months with a groin injury, as he replaced Andrew Jenkinson in the 68th minute. Town then wrapped up the points in the 85th minute as Lloyd Macklin raced forward and found the corner with a spectacular fi nish. The two wins proved to be vital after title rivals Boreham Wood and Bromley both dropped points over the Easter period. Just three games of the season remain, and Basingstoke travel to Sutton United for their next fi xture on Saturday.
