Tauranga Girls’ College Newsletter Message from the Principal How lucky am I to be the Principal of this College! Last weekend I popped into Hairini Marae to support our Kapa Haka roopu. I thought I would stay for an hour or so but I could have stayed the weekend. My thanks go to all the tutors, parent help and staff who make each weekend a focus that enables our students to prepare for Nationals. Special thanks to the tutors but I save my deepest gratitude to our students. Students arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday. Seven noho in a row are a lot of weekend commitments but it is also what is necessary to perform at National level. This is wahine toa in action. Throughout this newsletter you will once again read of the numerous successes that our students have had. Success is not only about the first place getters but about the courage to try, achieve and of course to fail. Without any of these, there is no learning going forward.

I had the pleasure of listening to a number of inspirational speakers sharing their views on ‘Unlocking Regional Growth Through Innovation’ in Tauranga recently. Many of the attributes that they spoke of are the very dispositions that this College is developing. Business innovation, the opportunity to be challenged, to collaborate, to authenticate the learning and to network using digital tools. The more often we can imitate these learning behaviours in school, the more likely our students will succeed when they leave school. Knowing what ‘your customers’ want is key to any business’ success. In school, knowing what parents want for their daughters and what students say, are key to developing a robust curriculum to maximise engagement. All of this is key to our success. Next week the Board of Trustees will be sharing its community consultation dates. As our current parents and students, we ask that you

too, take the time to attend our consultation hui. At each hui you will hear from parents, myself and students. To future proof our College, we want to hear from all stakeholders and partners - What does Empowering Tomorrow's Women the TGC way 2030 look like? Nothing is impossible so get your future focussed thoughts ready. Now is the time to drive a new vision, to ignite a new passion for learning and to drive a strategic plan that future proofs TGC to be better than before. Have your say and assist me to shape the future of TGC. I make no secret of the fact, that I want this College to be the school of choice for girls in the Bay. Finally, a few reminders. The TGC brand is an important one for all of us. It is our expectation that students wear their uniform with pride and wear it correctly. This is the action associated with agreeing to our enrolment. With winter uniform in place, students should be warm, but non regula-

tion items will be confiscated. Please support your daughter to remind her of our shared expectation with uniform and with behaviour. Like I said, the more we can imitate the expectations of businesses and work places, including uniform, the better we prepare our students for that world beyond school. Our values of Pride,

Respect and Participation are constant reminders of how to model our expectations. A copy of the behaviour matrix is further along in this newsletter. I support constant positive messages for all, staff and students. It is therefore unfortunate when responsibility is not taken and consequences have to be applied. I encourage all

students to be the best that they can be and to model our values daily.

Year 13 Economics Trip to Wellington

13Economics hit the Political and financial capital on 17 – 19th May, visiting such places as The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Parliament and the waterfront. We felt amazingly privileged to be ushered onto the trading floor of the ANZ immediately after the NZ Treasury Budget was released, even as the Economics team were formulating their response for Sharon Zollner, Chief Economist for ANZ. Traders in foreign exchange, debt and bonds paused at their screens to talk to the students about what

they were doing and why. One such trader thrilled the students as he clicked his screen to buy $1mNZ and in the space of 4 minutes, clicked again to sell those dollars and in the process made $67,000. Mind blowing to see what we talk about in class, happen in front of their eyes. The trip also included time at Te Papa, the Cuba Street night market and then the Underground market on Saturday morning, riding the cable car to admire the beautiful Wellington city lights from a height, and surviving a work-out walking up to Victoria University where we were given a guided tour and caught up with some of the young ladies from last year’s class. The Reserve Bank had to cancel our visit at the last minute due to the discovery of asbestos, so while some rested, some worked on assessments, and others checked out the shops. The students not only made me proud, but also surprised guest speakers with their in depth questions and comments. It was a worthwhile adventure for us all. Sandi Bell

165 Students Celebrated At the end of Term One our students all received interim reports. The purpose of this round of reporting was to give both whanau and students an indication of how the learning journey of each student is progressing as she works towards her goals for the year. At Tauranga Girls’ College students are offered many opportunities to thrive so that they can be the best they can be. We place high importance on students developing the key competencies outlined in The New Zealand Curriculum; ‘Thinking’, ‘Relating to others’, ‘Using language, symbols, and texts’, ‘Managing self’ and ‘Participating and contributing’. These key competencies are reflected in our school values of Manaakitanga (Respect), Mahi Tahi (Participation) and Mana Motuhake (Pride). At the same time, the attendance and school community participation of junior students was also looked at so students are aware of how they are tracking where their Junior Diploma is concerned.. We are extremely proud of the way in which our students approached their learning in Term One. There were a number of students who exceeded our expectations and showed they are working hard to be the best they can be. In total, over 65 Year 10 students and over 100 Year 9 students were recognised for their outstanding attendance, learning behaviours and school community participation. Ka wani ke! Outstanding wahine. We are excited about continuing to supporting your mahi!

Voyage 766 – from 30 September to 9 October sailing around Auckland 770 from 15 December to 24 December sailing around Nelson. 10 girls from our Year 10 had the opportunity to take part in a wonderful experience on a tall ship in the Hauraki Gulf. The girls involved in the voyage were Kate Fitzpatrick, Natalie Gander, Teia Kahura, Kate McKenzie, Soraya Marguiraut, Taylah Pratt, Holly Ramsden, Ashleigh Tanner, Lola Vahey Bourne, and Charlotte Webb. The girls travelled to Auckland on the Mana bus on Saturday 12 th May and boarded the boat that evening. The girls joined 3 other school groups – Diocesan School for Girls’, Hamilton Boys’ High School, and Marlborough Boys’ High School. During the week the girls were involved as a team in a wide variety of activities competing against the other schools. Highlights of the voyage for the girls included being woken up to the sound of bag pipes, early morning swims, sharing common experiences with students from other schools, rafting, sailing on a tall ship, night watch duties, trekking to the lookout on Waiheke and being victorious at the moon hopper bounce relay. The group really enjoyed the friendship and comradery within their group. The girls were fortunate to work with the ship crew who are incredibly committed and dedicated to making a difference to those young people taking part in the voyage. Jill Noble

Aquatics Class On Monday 21 May our senior Aquatics class went to Lake Rotoma to complete their shore dives. This is part of the course to gain their PADI Dive certificates, through Divezone. All the girls demonstrated strength and determination throughout the day. It was very windy and cold so they had to dig deep to stay in the water to complete all of the necessary skills. Ms Thomason (Physical Education teacher), was very impressed with all of the girls. They proved to be competent divers in the lake. This is a very different experience to the heated pool they have been training in up until now!
