The Human Body

he main protagonist of these pages is the very substance upon which tattooing depends and where it originates from: the human body in all its entirety, its complex structure, its concave and convex shapes and even its imperfections which make it wonderfully unique. It is brought to you like a 3D dummy, powerful with its redesigned forms interpreted by the tattoos. Its proportions, which in an ideal world are perfect, have been changed, revisited in a virtual journey that takes us from the head, down to the neck, shoulders, arms, chest, back, stomach, hands, hips, legs and finally to the feet. We show you all the magic that the art of tattoo can perform: it can alter, mould and renew established forms with just one design. Enjoy the lines, colours, the elegance and the richness of the subjects which are positioned according to the part of the body. Just like Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man who stands upright showing strength, stability and balance in the square within the circle – a portrait of man’s position in the world – so too the tattooed body can create new values of

equality and identity; we are all the same but we’re free to express ourselves in different ways. With creativity and precision we can transform and highlight certain body parts, whether it be soft, hidden hips or a bony ankle always on display. A woman’s foot might be decorated with a flower, and in contrast a warrior might occupy the whole of a person’s back. Or a flight of butterflies might cover a shoulder. You will see how the whole of the arm, front and back, can be home to horror stories, biomechanics, Japanese or Chicano styles. Or how a hand can play with the lettering on its fingers. See the way tribal is a crisscross of lines, a perfect balance between solid and empty shapes which fit perfectly around the form of the body. In this edition of Tattoo Special you can choose a path which goes beyond fashion. We have a picture of modern man who is not bound by the physical ties of his body, but who has the possibility of expressing himself both internally and externally through a language of signs and designs which reinforce our body language. The ink becomes an extension of our flesh.
