ISSUE No. 2 april
THE SPORTS ISSUE 1
welcome
Dear readers, sometimes you may find us a little rough around the edges. Sometimes there’s too much blank space, or there’s too little or too much text, or there’s just a little bit of this or a little bit of that missing. To that, we assure you, we’re working on it. Tattler, as a matter of fact, is still a work-in-progress. Perfection takes time, and we’re really still finding our way around this project of ours that is slowly but steadily growing. Sometimes it’s a little like groping around in the dark. Sometimes we’re illuminated by flashes of inspiration. (Or are blinded by them.) But whatever it is, what we do have is great passion and interest in what we do, and we try to bring to you every two months something made with love, care and sometimes a bit of (creative) angst. (FIGHTS! BOTTLE THROWING! MOUSE ABUSING! It all happens here.) Tattler is a collaborative space for people who are passionate about what they do, be it fashion, design, make-up, writing, the arts, marketing, fun, music. We’re a fluid entity and we ebb and flow along with the enthusiastic talents who come our way and who inject their personality into what you see as Tattler. That’s why we’re happy and proud to work with Titien, Rayson and Richard Chen again for this issue, and look forward to many more to come. So, do stick around. Let us know what you love, or what you don’t, and you can count on it that we’re always coming up with better stuff for you. K

AL&ALICIA by kerrie
Al is Alicia, and Alicia is Al. Describing themselves as ‘A schizophrenic duo, designing together’, AL&ALICIA brings to us a serendipitous manifestation of this season’s sports chic aesthetic. In her feature.01 collection, Alicia designs pieces that are simple, wellmade, versatile and perfect for the free and easy feel of the season.

the designer speaks “Let the focus be on the brand,” says 27-year-old Alicia, of AL&ALICIA. And of course we’ll oblige - that’s also why you’ll see no photo of camera-shy Alicia. But how can we resist not picking the brains of this nascent design star who has made waves in the local fashion scene?
“Feature
.01 came about as I left New York to return to Singapore. And whatever sad but beautiful memories I had of New York was translated into the collection. Hipsters on the lower east side, graffiti at freeman’s alley and people on the sidewalk of New York were all part of the inspiration. The girl I am dressing is unpretentious, dresses for herself and always has a bit of boyish chic in her, but never overdoing it.”
Who or what inspires you? I’ve always believed that fashion inspires the people on the streets and similarly, the people of the streets inspire fashion. Personally, I am greatly inspired by everything around me - wherever I go, whatever I see and particularly, music, art, relationships and the people around me. Do your creations/design aesthetic reflect your personality in any way? It reflects a part of what I am feeling, more than my personality. Each collection has a story behind it and the story usually stems from my interpretations, experiences or just a form of expression. Most of the time when I design a piece, it is usually based on what I would like the girl in my story to wear. 12
Was it hard getting your footing in the beginning? It still is hard! I think it is still the beginning for AL&ALICIA. This road was never easy to begin with and I am thankful for all the people that I’ve met and all the support I’ve had that keeps me going! Why the decision to make your pieces in Singapore given the higher costs? It is really tough, having to carry out production in Singapore. People are always looking at prices and wondering why local designers charge so much as compared to big brands like Zara or H&M. But the main reason for starting production in Singapore is because I will be closer to the production facilities and am able to carry out quality control at a more efficient pace.
“It also feels good to see the words “made in Singapore” on the label. At least for me!” Who do you envision wearing your pieces? Seriously? Dakota Fanning. Or maybe just those cool people off the streets who aren’t just swayed by the
big names. It’ll be awesome to spot AL&ALICIA on random people on the streets. Might be tough though, since we produce in limited numbers only. What do you think of the fashion industry in Singapore? It’s small. Really really small. The market is small because most of the locals are swayed by the big names and not willing to spend on local designers because they have this stereotypical image of local designers. The industry is also not getting enough funding and recognition by the government as an important sector to grow and focus on. But it is changing... Slowly.. What’s coming up next? Feature.02 Cruise 2010 Collection to be launched at Blueprint 2010. A fashion show. A private party. That much I can tell you. Oh and also our expansion plan of growing AL&ALICIA out of our little country. What would you say to someone who’s looking to become a designer? Don’t rush, don’t be discouraged and be nice. Priscilla of Chalk chats with kerrie about starting her own label
14
The
first thing you notice about Priscilla is how chipper she is. All smiles and cheerfulness, her saccharine sweetness would seem almost too-goodto-be-true if not for the fact that you can tell she’s being 100% genuine. And that sweetness clearly translates onto her designs. Girly flounces and dolly bows create a très feminine aesthetic, akin to the outfits on those cut-out paper dolls salvaged from the era of my mother’s youth. Despite her resume, taking the plunge in building her brand full-time was still a scary, yet heartening experience. Her proudest moment was in “breaking away from my safe mindset of working for others and climbing up the corporate ladder to start Chalk from scratch - that first step was really my biggest gamble ever!” Running it alone is of course not always a bed of roses, as balancing the creative and the business aspect of fashion can sometimes prove tricky. She hopes to get more help as Chalk grows but is driven by the satisfaction she derives from her customers’ joy:
RESUME
• Degree in Fashion Marketing at the University of Huddersfield • Diploma in Fashion Design at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts - Assistant Fashion • Designer for Swirl for 2 years. • Winner TOPSHOP/TOPMAN Fresh Graduate Showcase organized by the Singapore Fashion Week in 2007
“It really drives me to work harder when I see ladies wearing and loving my designs. I think my customers are a great source of encouragement and inspiration for me to do better!” So what about her personal style? She loves “colours, prints and patterns, and I have dressing colour charts for all my moods! I love mixing different textures and I never leave my house without my beloved costume jewelry!”

Now, you might say, who in their right minds would want to sweat it out in some $500 top or $1000 trousers? Well, don’t take it so seriously. These looks aren’t dri-fit and aren’t meant to be worn to the gym. And no, they definitely won’t go well with your running shoes. They’re perfect for lazy days out, spending afternoons browsing stores or having a cup of coffee with the girlfriends. It’s all about the material and layering. Jersey and stretchy fabric make the cut for ease of movement. The layering helps make the look more sophisticated and less “I just walked out of the gym.”

In the crazy heat that we’ve been experiencing for the past month, I’d say many readers will welcome this look with open arms: the racerback, the high hemlines and hair neatly kept away from the face. My advice: to carry off these looks well, you’ll definitely need to hit the gym (or hit the mats and do some serious yoga) as these looks require toned legs and gorgeous arms to pull off. Or as seen at Alexander Wang, some awesome abs.

This
SEASON SAW SOME DESIGNERS paying some attention to the eyes – that is, by accessorising with sunglasses. Afterall, it is SS10, the season to hit the sandy beaches to get a tan or simply laze on the grass at the park. Not only is it important to slap on some sunblock, it’s important to protect your eyes too! The bright light from the sun often results in people squinting, and it doesn’t take a genius to know, more squinting results in more wrinkles! The same harmful rays that damage the skin and cause pigmentation, can also create eye problems such as cataracts or photokeratitis – sunburn of the cornea, which can result in temporary loss of vision. So while some fashion designers and celebrities may use sunglasses to block off the harsh flashes from the paparazzi, there are genuine reasons to wear sunglasses. There’s a huge selection of sunglasses in stores, with different designs, tints and frames, unless you know what works for your face shape, you’ll probably need to spend some time trying on at least a dozen pairs of sunglasses to figure out what you like. PROTECT THOSE EYES As a serious buyer of sunglasses, you should be looking at sunglasses which have labels to say UV 400 or 100% UV protection. Personally, I like buying my sunglasses from optical shops or stores which specialize in sunglasses. Not only do they have the widest range to choose from, but the staff selling them probably know their stuff and can make better recommendations. Ultra Violet Radiation includes both the UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses should be dark enough to reduce the glare from the sun, but not dark enough to distort colours. This is especially important for people who drive and need to pay attention to traffic signals. Professionals say the best tints are neutral grey, amber, green or brown. A darker tint does not mean more UV protection.
>>>
31
fash ion trend report
tip: a quick lens guide • Gray lens tints reduce brightness, but do not distort color. • Brown and amber tints reduce glare, including the glare created by the blue frequency in sunlight, which can make things appear hazy. • Brown and amber tints distort colors more than gray tints do. • Yellow lens tints reduce the haze from blue light better than browns, so they really sharpen up the view, but they cause more color distortion.
3.1 phillip lim
32
stella mccartney
• Green tinted lenses reduce glare and help filter out some of the blue light. They provide good contrast between objects. • Rose colored lenses might be a good choice if you participate in water sports or other outdoor activities, because they provide good contrast for objects viewed against blue or green backgrounds.

Another consideration is the material of the frame – plastic, base metals, titanium and aluminium are some of the materials available. Try on different frame types to compare their weight and see which are most comfortable for you. I have a pair of aviators from Ray Ban, but I hardly use them as they have to be kept in the casing to ensure the wire frames don’t get bent out of shape. Remember: Sunglasses may be used to complete your look and hide tired eyes from the rest of the world, but the most important thing is that it provides good eye protection. After that, the comfort level of wearing the sunnies and whether it complements your style and personality (though it never hurts to have one than one pair). The selections available for sunglasses are so varied that no pair will ever really go out of style, so a pair of sunglasses is another item to consider as an investment piece! 35

fash ion so he says
fashionably sporty? it’s now possible, says rueben, thanks to someone whom he believes is god’s gift to sportswear
During
the ancient games in Greece, the immaculately crafted birthday suit was the outfit for athletes. What was so essential about this piece of sportswear, was that it was not obstructive and on the contrary, extremely aerodynamic. Most importantly, every piece served as unique adornment for each athlete. If you really must know, olive oil was applied to provide that extra sheen.
44
But modern developments put this overt display to an untimely end, and has heralded the age of sportswear. Unfortunately, since then sportswear has failed to fill up to the lacuna left by its predecessor, and this author wonders why.
By definition, sportswear is a category of clothing. By extension, this would mean that there would be some sort of causal connection between fashion and sportswear, however remote. Yet attempts to match make the two have often led to very, very unholy marriage. In fact, until recently, the crushing reality seemed to be that sportswear would remain the unlikely spinster, confined to the prisons of the sporting arena. But as with every historical moment, divine intervention ensures that someone saves the day. For Politics, it was Barack Obama. For Harry Potter, it was Harry Potter. For Religion, you know the answer. But for Sportswear, God sent Thom Browne. >>>
45
fash ion so he says His inaugural Autumn/Winter 09 collection had hardliners up in arms and fashionistas dancing for joy. Sportswear had finally found her soul mate.
Thom Browne had never specifically mentioned this, but this author believes that the reason behind Mr Browne's success is his intimate understanding of the two fundamentals of sportswear implicitly articulated by the fashionistaathlete in ancient Greece: Form and Function.
46
While these are well established tenets of ready-to-wear fashion, it took over two millennia for a designer to realise that these could be applied to sportswear as well.
It is to Thom Browne that sportswear owes its dues for resurrecting these elusive Grecian secrets, allowing her to embrace fashion with arms wide open, once again. 47

Guys
, whether you are buff or not, you should try this season's sporty look
(outside the gym) which will still look presentable enough when you head out for a casual lunch. To get the look, keep to the basics of a hoodie, a pair of smart bermudas and nice sneakers (even your worn converse chucks will make the cut). For those who dare to go a bit further, try out bigger, less-preppy looking cardigans paired with a polo shirt and clean cut knee-length bermudas. One word of advice: stay away from wife-beaters or singlets. This trend isn't going with a beach volleyball vibe. Every issue, we profile a fearless stylemeister who stands out from the crowd by expressing themselves sartorially with a great deal of personality and flair. So to kick things off, we introduce to you Addis: a 21-year-old skater boy who lives and breathes his passions, and wears his style with a subtle swagger. >>>
55
fash ion
“I
56
believ
ve style comes from within.”
Says
21-year-old Addis, the skater boy who’s more than meets the eye. To be fair, what meets the eye is already pretty impressive. This Niche Skateshop sponsored skater (and from what I gather, when you’re sponsored, it means you’re pretty damned good) is tall and lean with pretty mean skills. He obligingly does stunts that make my palms sweat in nervousness. Which is probably insulting to him of course, because he barely breaks a sweat himself each time he leaps, flips and pretty much flies.
Yet his often airborne self belies a down-to-earth attitude. Addis professes his deep love for God, skating, and cooking in the same breath. He teaches cooking to pay his bills, (he used to be a chef at Hog’s Breath), skates for the passion, and breathes religion as his sustenance. He lightly expresses his aversion to the (for the lack of a better phrase) ‘dark side’ – smoking, drinking, clubbing – which is just not his style.
“Of course I’ve been through my fair share of teenage drama but there comes a point where you get sick of all the “wild life” and just want to live in the light, you know what I’m saying.” So what is his style like? In short - a skater boy sans the baggy clothes and f’em attitude. He emanates a charm that too many of his peers are sadly bereft of. Scuffed up Chuck Taylor high-tops, skinny jeans (Bershka and Vibralux, a rollerblading brand), plain tees and tanks (Bershka and Calvin Klein). It’s an unpretentious, clean image with just the right amount of ruggedness. It’s a grey and drizzly day but Addis is unruffled when tasked with demonstrating some of his skills. He jumps, bumps and slides - and after umpteenth jumps to get the near-perfect shot, which he agrees to without a complaint - it’s almost time to pack up and go. But not before we quiz him about his favourite things, of course. >>> 57

And, just for the record: “(laughs) I am VERY single. But I don’t believe in jumping into relationships. I believe the right one will come when the time is right. It’s all God’s plan you know. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”
60
Like any real softie at heart, he sometimes wears his heart on his sleeve. “The “ipure” band on my right wrist is from a skateshop in Taiwan. It reminds me of the good times I had there with the Taiwan rollerbladers and how much they took care of me when I was there. They’re pretty amazing guys. The brown bracelet on my left is actually from my best friend, Sonia. We both have one. She gave it to me last Christmas as a form of encouragement. Like whenever we’re going through something tough we would look at it and be reminded of the good times, you know. Plus, both of us travel a lot so we’ll miss each other less when we have the bracelet on. You know the whole “you’re a part of me” thing.”

This season, try adding milky brown colour palettes into your makeup bag. This range of colours not only naturally complements any tanned skin, it also creates a healthy glow with a subtly sweet allure.

review: biotherm white d-tox laea tries out biotherm’s latest offering
product snapshot So what’s this product all about? Biotherm has recently come to a breakthrough in creating a leading whitening skin care range through the study of genes. In collaboration with the prestigious Institute Curie, Biotherm discovered that melanin, at production, is naturally transparent and is pigmented and darkened by a gene called PMEL 17. Through its studies, Biotherm develops the first whitening skin care range to targets melanin production at a genetic level.
82
So how does it work?
beauty
To target and inhibit PMEL 17, Biotherm uses key ingredient Phyto-code seed to reduce the coloration process. On the cell level, Phyto-Marine Extract helps to regulate melanin synthesis and flow. On the surface level, Biopeel (ER-195) helps to peel away spots and dullness. To stimulate the birth of new cells, Biotherm uses its signature element in all its products - Pure Thermal Plankton (PTP). As a result, skin is brightened and whitened. 90% of women showed instant brightening and 98% for even skin tone from a test done on 50 Asian women. 90% of women also showed clearing of pigmentation.
the road test: my honest take White D-Tox (Bright-Cell) Tri roll-on concentrate My score: 5/5 - highly recommended! This efficient and miraculous serum comes with 3 roll-on heads to massage on affected areas. Its highly concentrated resurfacing agent helps to peel away dark spots, dark marks and dullness. I highly recommend this new ingenious invention that is ostensibly backed up by research and scientific study. After less than 2 weeks of use, my skin instantly becomes brighter, more refined and fairer. The Tri-ball tool helps to massage in the serum more effectively to help the product absorb better into the skin, boosting its efficiency. Despite my initial apprehension in believing the efficacy of the rollerball tool, the application proved to be quite entertaining and therapeutic. It has a light cream texture that is welcoming for me as it does not leave a suffocating sticky residue which is common with whitening products. 83

new album releases nikko gives you her take
Michelle Branch - Everything Comes and Goes Label: Warner Bros
Sweet
and simple with a touch of country flavor is what sums up the latest album from Michelle Branch. ‘Everything Comes and Goes’ is her first solo album since Hotel Paper back in 2003. With candid lyrics effortlessly written about life and love such as “it’s a crazy ride / it’s never perfect all the time / it’ll pull you down and send you flying”, they display her talents as a songwriter.
Her up-tempo country song “Sooner or Later” is the first single off the album. Throughout the album her voice comes across as powerful and clear, with the recurrent country twang. If you enjoy country music you’ll definitely enjoy this album. Tracks like “Long Goodbye”, “Sooner or Later” and “This Way” will be right up your alley. Otherwise, the slower tracks “Through the Radio” and the lullaby she wrote for her daughter “Crazy Ride” should definitely not be missed. If country pop is your style & your favorites include Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, and Carrie Underwood, then this album is for you. 84
lifestyle Angels and Airwaves - Love Label: Geffen When he works. he works. Whether it’s a studio undertaking or a personal project, Tom DeLonge puts his all into his music – just what it takes to produce a hit! As the guitarist/vocalist for the band Blink-182, Delonge managed to turn a little side pastime into a potential winner. Angels and Airwaves latest album “Love” , has turned out to be a winner with an impressive punk rock style. It has a comparable feel to Blink-182’s style. Of the release, DeLonge said, “There’s nothing that I have put more effort, more time, more heart, and more stress into than this release. Artistically, I think this record has far exceeded anywhere I’ve been”. Lyrics such as “life’s just a game it’s just one epic holiday” typify the light-hearted mood the album. “Love” was released, of course, on Valentine’s Day through Modlife free of charge. If you find your playlist filled with bands such as The All-American Rejects, Sum 41, LostProphets, and of course, Blink-182, chances are you’ll fall for “Love” and especially, Angel’s and Airwaves. Story of the Year – The Constant Label: Epitaph Records “The Constant” – the latest explosive album from Story of the Year is not to be missed. This American post-hardcore band are out with their fourth studio album and, like their album title, they have pretty much maintained the same powerful, rock style that demands your attention. The first two tracks “The Children Sing” and “I’m Alive” feel like a warm up in preparation for the heavy riff, hardcore screamo vocal-filled tracks like “Won Threw Ate” and “Eye For An Eye”. However, the only slow power ballad on the album is the track “Holding On To You” which oddly enough, has the same rhythmic intro as the song “Always All Ways” by the band LostProphets. Other than that, Story of the Year continue to rock and you should definitely check out this album. If you’re into the post-hardcore bands like Senses Fail, Lost Prophets, Silverstein or even The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, you’ll definitely want to grab this album.

the great o With
busy 9-5 work schedules daily it is easy to forget about exercise; that is, until we look in the mirror. After awhile we start realizing certain areas on our body -like the belly, arms or thighs - slowing expanding and evolving into something Joan Liew would definitely not approve of. ER…Joan who? Incase you ‘re wondering……. Joan Liew is Singapore’s national bodybuilder as well as a highly accredited personal trainer in Singapore. Alas, I digress… this article is not about Joan Liew but rather about YOU, and what you can do to get some exercise into your day, albeit at your desk. So now, there are no excuses!

Now I’m no personal trainer, but I have completed and received my Basic Exercise Course (BEC) as well as my First Aid Cert (which one has to complete in order to get their BEC) so don’t worry, I can be trusted. I’ve researched and tried for myself these different individual exercises. For this article I have listed 5 simple exercises to get the blood flowing. Each of them will focus on a different body part so that most areas are covered. Here goes – a simple enough exercise routine you can do right where you are at your desk, on the computer.
o w t e s i c r e x e
Spinal Twist – Seated, with feet flat on the floor, tense the abs and gently twist the torso to the right. With hands gripping the right side of the seat twist back as far as you can comfortably can, holding the stretch for 1030 seconds. Repeat on the other side.

Assisted Push-Up – Like a push up, but seated, place your hands on the front side of the desk and lean up against your desk. Slowly push yourself away. You can increase the speed but make sure the technique is correct. Do this a few times during the day, with 10 repetitions each time.
exercise four Butt Squeezes – This is the easiest exercise that can be done whether standing up or sitting down. As its name says you simply just squeeze and release your buttock muscles several times a day 88
lifestyle Leg Lifts - Straighten your legs out in front of you and raise them as high as you can. Repeat 10 times throughout the day. You can also march with your feet in place. This will help exercise the other muscles in your legs. Repeating these simple exercises throughout the day won’t cause dramatic weight loss or make you the next Joan Liew but they will definitely benefit you. Take for example the Spinal Twist stretch. Long hours of sitting can leave the lower back feeing achy and uncomfortable. By doing this basic stretch you can help yourself loosen the strain as well as strengthen your spine. You’ll end the day satisfied having made it through a workout, got the endorphins (those ‘happy’ hormones ) going, and knowing that you are one step ahead in your goal towards an improved figure. Keep fit & stay healthy!

What is an Allerg
According to the Medical Dictionary, an allergy is “an abnormally high ity to certain substances, such as pollens, foods, or microorganisms. C indications of allergy may include sneezing, itching, and skin rashes.” people are allergic to one thing or another – for example dust, alcohol or certain foods –but have you ever heard of these allergies… by nikko
Mobile Phone Allergy “Mobile Phone dermatitis” is a type of rash that has been linked to what is known as the Mobile Phone Allergy. After careful research, physicians were able to determine that people who have this allergy actually suffer from what is called contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis symptoms include an itchy, blistering skin rash caused by a direct contact of a substance (which in this case is the nickel plating on the mobile phone) to the skin.

iPod Allergy The iPod allergy is similar to what has recently been called “Mobile Phone Dermatitis” or the Mobile Phone Allergy. The main culprit to blame this for is the nickel contained in the case of most iPods. Holding the iPod near to the face or ear will increase the chances of the rash break out for people sensitive to nickel. While a nickel allergy isn’t really curable, there are some things you can do to avoid the rash like for example, keeping the device away from your face.

how we stay cool
the weather has been blisteringly hot lately. sure brings out the crankiness in some of us...
Before the Cool Comes Sometimes There is a Meltdown I sweat. And I get somewhat cranky and this terrible sweat-induced monster bursts out of me and bites the head off anyone who makes me walk more than necessary in 35 degree heat, and I’m the opposite of a heatseeking missile. I hone in on air-conditioned spaces and once I step in I immediately relax. Free public air-con is totally my thing.

The word cool is defined in the dictionary as 'fairly low temperature'. So... I stay 'cool' by being nocturnal. I don't see the sun and when outdoors the temperature is lovely. While I’m at it... a glass of champagne will top off my night. That's what cool is all about.

DEBBY
I've had my moments of being short-tempered and grouchy due to the heat we've experienced since February. But I never succumb to the allure of the air-conditioner. Why? Switching on the air-conditioning will only make matters worse. In the long run, it contributes to the rising temperatures with all the chlorofluorocarbons produced, which only damages the ozone layer and lets more of the sun's rays through. In the short term, airconditioners (which consumes loads of electricity = loads of money) only help to keep you cool and happy while you're in the room. Once you step out, you feel ickier and stickier than before. So, I keep cool by just going to the movies. Enjoy the air-conditioning while getting entertained. Now that's getting more bang for your buck.

I think 'cool' thoughts, like STACEY dipping my feet into the ocean or San Francisco in Winter. Doesn't really help because of my poor imagination, but I try.
