The Coaches History/Records

Derrick Ross played in six games during the regular season for the Kansas City Chiefs after starting in the preseason in 2006. He had three rushes for eight yards and one punt return. The following summer, Ross was named the NFL Europe Most Valuable Player. He started 16 games and crushed the AFL record books in 2012 with the Philadelphia Soul; set league single-season record with 645 rushing yards, franchise single-season record with 146 rushing attempts, franchise single-season record with 32 rushing touchdowns, and franchise single-game record with 84 rushing yards. He was then named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Nick Stephens was signed as an undrafted free agent for the Tennessee Titans in 2012. He played in one preseason game for the Titans, completing four passes for 24 yards. Stephens was waived by the Titans following the preseason, but signed a free agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys following the 2012 season. He heads into the 2013 campaign as one of four quarterbacks on the Cowboys roster.

Camp Wilson, FB • 1946-49, Detroit Lions Wilson played in 44 games in his career, rushing 378 times for 1,453 yards and six touchdowns. He also recorded 20 receptions for 198 yards, an average of 9.9 yards per catch, and punted the ball 22 times as a rookie in 1946 for 868 yards, an average of 39.5 yards per kick. He had a long of 69 yards. He was from El Paso and went on to play at Hardin-Simmons and Tulsa. Randy Winkler, G/T • 1967-68, ‘71, Detroit, Atlanta, Green Bay Winkler played in eight games for the Lions in 1967, 12 games for the Falcons in 1968 and five games for the Packers in 1971. He was from Belton.

Rufus Johnson became just the second Tarleton player to ever be selected in the modern-day NFL Draft, going in the sixthround to the New Orleans Saints in April 2013. Johnson signed a four-year deal with the Saints and worked out in the Saints’ rookie mini-camp this past May. He is listed as one of 15 linebackers on the Saints roster heading into training camp this season. Johnson was a two-time All-LSC selection for the Texans and earned All-American honors following his senior season at Tarleton. Walter Bryan, HB • 1955, Baltimore Colts Bryan played in 10 games and had two rushes for four yards with a long of eight yards. He had one interception for four yards. The Olney native went on to play for Texas Tech.

The LSC

Marv Brown, HB • 1957, Detroit Lions Brown played in four games and rushed twice for total of six yards. He returned three punts for 16 yards, including a long of 15. Brown had six kickoff returns for 106 yards, an average of 17.7 yards per return. He had a long of 23 yards. Brown was a native of Waco and went on to play at A&M-Commerce.
