NOTES Born in Hungary, Béla Bartók (1881–1945) is regarded by many as one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century. A fine pianist as well, Bartók was steadfastly committed to nurturing the traditional folk music of his birthplace and neighboring Romania. Composed for piano in 1915, Romanian Folk Dances is a suite originally comprised of six dances. The three featured herein—Peasant Costume, Standing Still, and Stick Game—are largely built on modes, most of which differ from the major and minor scales traditionally found in classical music from Western Europe. Great musicians must define the character of the pieces they play. Some music is intended to evoke deep emotions on a profound scale. Conversely, Three Romanian Dances should remain reverent to its derivative sources. When presented in a simple folk style, these quirky, ageless tunes will once again be sure to refresh.
