PROGRAM NOTES Le Marche Diabolique is an advanced trio for percussion featuring solo snare drum. The repetitive, incessant line in the xylophone changes only in its dynamics as it appears throughout the composition. The snare part combines elements of concert and rudimental playing. The fluctuation between simple and complex interplay in the three parts, sudden changes in dynamics, and the displacement of the regular beat all add to the diabolic nature of this music.
PERFORMANCE NOTES The Percussion 2 part calls for playing the bass drum and cymbals simultaneously. At letter B, this is bass drum and suspended cymbal, while at letter F it is bass drum and piatti. Since it is ideal in this piece to position the bass drum surface horizontally, playing piatti with one hand will require the bottom cymbal to be mounted upside down on a stand with the top cymbal within easy reach. If playing piatti at letter F is not feasible, it is okay to perform this part with a stick on the suspended cymbal (as at letter B). The snare drum should be a 5" x 14" drum. Rim shots are to be achieved by pressing the left stick into the head and striking it with the right stick close to the neck of the left stick. The duck call in Percussion 1 should be flat and dull sounding, with the woodblock pulse being louder. The sticking in the snare drum part at G2 should be followed exactly.
