EMERGE for solo marimba
Emerge is a marimba solo I wrote as a part of Five Miniatures for Marimba, a collection designed to introduce four-mallet technique to my students. This piece is performable on a standard 4.3-octave (low A) marimba and, uniquely, can be performed with just three mallets. Players are encouraged to perform this piece while holding four mallets, but holding three might be helpful for the learning process or for players just starting out with the technique. If using only three mallets, use an L2 R1 approach as illustrated here.

The composition is repetitive in nature, allowing the player to focus on technique and to configuration make music quickly. Harmonically, the third of the chord is often placed in the top voice. This is a sound I became fond of while writing Five Miniatures. I found that it allowed the marimba to sound full with only three notes. The tempo is flexible, allowing all players to be successful in their performance.
