Future Independents Associated Grocers of New England

In an era of big box stores, banks and supermarkets owned by foreign companies – and everybody wondering where the jobs have gone – more and more consumers are embracing the “shop local” movement. At the very heart of it is the cooperative. Cooperatives employ roughly 100 million people. Associated Grocers of New England is a cooperative that supplies over 600 independent supermarkets and convenience retailers across New England. The United Nations named this the International Year of Cooperatives. You may have seen our TV commercials promoting independent retail grocers and the “Year of the Cooperative”. List of Advertisers President and Chair’s Message Dear Association Members, There is no doubt that the partnership between the Maine Food Producers Alliance and Maine Grocers Association has yielded positive business opportunities and improved communications nexus’ for our respective members. At no time in our history has there been such a significant interest in food, particularly specialty food, and in purchasing food locally. So it is with great pleasure that we present the 2013 Maine Food Industry Directory & Resource Guide – a publication dedicated to all Maine companies growing, processing, delivering, serving and selling food. Pick up the Directory when looking for a new product, service idea or your local grocer. Why not make a point of introducing yourself and realize the benefit of doing business with a member! In 2012 our partnership was further strengthened as members gathered in Augusta for the 1st Annual Spring Issues & Answers – A Food For Thought Forum and Legislative Breakfast, and again in October at the 4th Annual Maine Food Means Business Summit. The Alliance kicked off the Market Ready Program, equipping emerging food producers with essential tools to expand into new and larger wholesale, retail, and distribution markets. Two critical program tracks, Food Safety and Quality and Manufacturing Operations and Scaling Up were launched in partnership with member businesses who hosted a series of five Technical Sessions throughout the state. Looking ahead to 2013, we envision stronger ties between our associations and industry partners to promote the value of doing business locally and provide “best in class” membership benefits. Don’t miss these valuable opportunities! March 27, 2013

MGA and MFPA 2012 Event Highlights Spring Issues and Answers: A Food For Thought Forum The MGA and MFPA continued their partnership in 2012 by combining two individual events into one sensational occasion. Together with the Maine Merchants Association, the three associations teamed up to bring our members together for a day of networking and discussion on a range of topics. The March event was well planned, as the 125th Legislature was midway through the Second Session, hotly debating a variety of issues including workers’ compensation and redefining the definition and criteria for independent contractors. New for 2012, we welcomed a number of lawmakers to the Legislative Meet & Greet Breakfast. At noon, we were honored to be briefed by the Legislature’s Leadership team: Senate President Kevin L. Raye, Speaker of the House Robert W. Nutting, Senate Minority Leader Barry J. Hobbins, and Emily Cain, Minority Leader, House of Representatives. Paul Sighinolfi, Executive Director and Chair of the Workers’ Compensation Board and Laura Boyett from the Dept. of Labor provided excellent summaries of how expected changes would impact business owners. Ken Fletcher, Director of the Governor’s Office of Energy, provided a view of both short and long term “fixes” proposed by the LePage Administration, a topic of particular interest to grocers and manufacturers alike. Deb Neuman, Deputy Commissioner, Dept. of Economic and Community Development, talked about tourism strategies as they relate to economic development, and Dwane Hubert, Senior Emergency Manager at the Maine Emergency Management Agency, gave a compelling talk on business continuity planning. Always of interest to grocers, is how to deal with “bad checks” and other fraudulent actions. William Lund, Superintendent of the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection and Knox County District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlaw gave step-by-step instructions on how to combat these actions and noted recent law changes in favor of the retailer. Cathe Morrill, President of the State of Maine Cheese Company and MFPA Board Member, announced plans for MFPA’s Market Ready Program, recently funded through a grant from the Maine Technology Institute. In addition, Dan Wallace of CEI, Inc., John Holden of Eaton Peabody Consulting Group and Hugh Stevens,of the University of Maine, were on hand to talk about available grants and low interest loans for grocers as well as technical assistance to entrepreneur food producers.

MGA Annual Golf Tournament For the fourth year in a row, rain showers fell on the Maine Grocers Association Spring Golf tournament, but it didn’t deter the 85 golfers who played well and enjoyed the beautiful and challenging Martindale Country Club course located in Auburn. The MGA greatly appreciates all of the volunteers – Mark Davis, Pepsi Beverages Company for supervising the Putting Contest, Mary Jo Tozier, Tozier’s Market and Mike Waterman, H.P. Hood for their watchful eye on the Hole in One Contest, and Tanya Bentley, Eaton Peabody for her assistance with the registration and photography. Maine Food Means Business 2012 Summit - A Success! The 4th Annual Maine Food Means Business Summit marked another success story for the Maine Grocers Association and Maine Food Producers Alliance. Agriculture Commissioner Walt Whitcomb opened the Summit with words of welcome from the LePage Administration. Commissioner Whitcomb noted that there is an improved, customer friendly mission at the Department and he welcomes the opportunity to work more closely with the two associations. The MGA celebrated its 77th Anniversary and the Alliance kicked off its Market Ready Program with MFPA Partner Bill Whittier, Maine MEP, and MFPA Business Development Specialist Raegan LaRochelle. Cathe Morrill, State of Maine Cheese Company, and Cynthia Fisher, Bar Harbor Foods, two veteran food producers, conducted a mock FDA food inspection, and hinted that getting to know your inspector will lead to a positive experience.

John Domino, JTD Retail Strategies, offered tips to attract and retain customers and to move products from the grocery store shelf to the customer’s basket. Are you providing your customers the opportunity to say “Wow”? Small investments in lighting and upgraded flooring will guarantee increased sales. Take steps that say that you value your customer. Rich Brooks, flyte new media, jazzed up the audience when he asked the audience – “Do you have a Facebook page? Do you have a Twitter account?” Businesses must use these essential tools to reach today’s customer. Start a conversation with your customer – this will engage them. You need to be where your customer is and today that means ranking high in search engines and being in their pockets and pocketbooks with mobile marketing. The Summit was held just prior to the November 6 election, so we welcomed well known political analysts Ethan Strimling (D) and Phil Harriman (R) for a debate narrated by Erin Rhoda, Bangor Daily News. The overriding message was to make your voice be heard. Contact your State Representative and Senator. Invite them into your place of business and get to know them. They want to hear from Maine business owners. New for 2012 was the Producer Showcase. This was a chance for members to present their products to the assembled audience. Fifteen courageous food producers pitched a variety of products from energy bars to granola to biscotti to clam cakes! It was an impressive group and everyone agreed it was the highlight of the day! Our final session featured Maine’s top lenders, including members Camden National Bank, Bangor Savings Bank, and Coastal Enterprises, Inc. These lenders broke into round table discussions where participants were treated to practical financial guidance. This event would not have been possible without our devoted sponsors, fellow board members, and industry partners. Special thanks go to: Our Event Sponsor, Associated Grocers of New England, Gold Sponsors Hannaford Supermarkets, Bangor Savings Bank, Bozzuto’s Inc., iGPS, Shaw’s, C&S Wholesale Grocers; our Silver Sponsors, Pepsi Beverages Company, Lepage Bakeries, Maine Small Business Development Centers, Northeast Laboratory Services, Volk Packaging Corporation, Coca-Cola

2012 GROCER OF THE YEAR Kimberly Murphy Trenton Marketplace IGA

Some food for thought… Nutritional legal counsel Lambert Coffin for clients who grow, catch & produce food. Food safety/labeling regulation Food product liability

Kimberly Murphy is a “Maine Girl,” whose dream was to own and operate her own small business, to work hard and to make a difference in some small way. She began in retail in the early 80’s, working for chain companies, where her supervisory, bookkeeping, merchandising and managing skills were utilized at an early age. Early in her career, Kimberly managed to raise two boys with the help of her husband Dean, while continuing her education at the Center for Degree Studies in Scranton, PA, maintaining a fulltime job and holding part time jobs, as she worked to get ahead. In 1988, Kim had to make a career choice between a position with a “big oil company” and a local supermarket. With the hope of potential growth opportunities, she took the offer at the local supermarket. During the early 90’s, her position quickly began to change, from Office Management to General Management, overseeing 26+ residential and commercial rental units, computerizing, managing, and operating a full serve post office/supermarket office, training new employees, scheduling, hiring, firing, and overall supermarket management.

Employment, including immigration and wage and hour compliance Compliance with Maine’s Best Management Practices Trademarks and branding Estate and succession planning State and federal taxes Financing

In 2002, the President/Owner of the company asked if Kim would be interested in buying the two stores. And so began her journey toward becoming a small business owner.

Land use

On April 1, 2004, Kimberly Murphy became the owner of a full service grocery store (Trenton Marketplace IGA) and a small convenience store (Lamoine Marketplace). After the first five years of business, she secured financing and purchased the building and 13 rental units. Early this year, she began negotiations to purchase a store in the Ellsworth area and in May, she opened her newest Marketplace store, the Ellsworth Marketplace. Kim has served on the MGA Board of Directors since 2003. Congratulations, Kim! www.lambertcoffin.com

2012 VENDOR OF THE YEAR

2012 MAINE FOOD PRODUCER OF THE YEAR

Michaud Distributors

Joshua Davis and Bruno Tropeano Gelato Fiasco

Michaud Distributors originated in Scarborough, Maine as a small family owned business in 1980 with a philosophy of delivering quality snacks and great service. In the early years, Michaud Distributors operated out of a lone unheated warehouse in Scarborough. At that time the company’s portfolio consisted primarily of one brand that was distributed to small independent channels, schools, grocery, and vending in the greater Portland market.

Today, after more than thirty years in business, Michaud Distributors continues to deliver quality snacks with the same customer centric focus, utilizing a fleet of over 150 commercial vehicles to an expanded footprint covering Maine, New Hampshire,Vermont, and upstate New York. The company’s portfolio has grown to cover a wide selection of quality snacks available in all channels of business from your mom and pop corner store to the major grocery chains. Michaud Distributors is committed to its customers, associates, and communities. They still hold the basic principles of quality service, quality people and quality snack foods. Congratulations, Michaud Distributors!

The year was 2007. Joshua Davis and Bruno Tropeano, two guys right out of college, felt that something was amiss. Americans created or imported the best of everything in the world - universities, computers, ships, winter boots. But the gelato they enjoyed during trips to Italy simply could not be found. The dessert had popped up here and there in major American cities, but it was bland, premade, and over-iced. The traditions that made the frozen treat a delight were beginning to be lost. So Josh and Bruno decided to take gelato into their own hands. They sought to take the best practices of Italy and perfect the art of gelato right here in Maine. They learned the techniques and practices of the Old World Italian masters of gelato: use local milk, add only the best ingredients, and make a fresh product from scratch. They used those techniques as a foundation for creating an even better gelato experience, by making truly original flavors, never compromising on quality, and always having fun. The Gelato Fiasco is the result of their quest. On August 7, 2007, Josh and Bruno opened their flagship store in Brunswick, Maine. A second store later opened in the Old Port in Portland. Today, their store in Brunswick creates gelato that is sold at more than 200 independent grocers, supermarkets, and restaurants throughout New England. The company has been featured in Rachel Ray Every Day, Fortune, Bloomberg, Reuters, and on MSNBC. As The Gelato Fiasco has grown, its core product values have remained constant: use rich, fresh milk only from Maine farms, sweeten only with natural cane sugar, and provide flavor only from real fruits, nuts, and confections. Josh and Bruno’s hope: those who discover their gelato will share with their families and friends, who will share with theirs. Congratulations, Josh and Bruno!

As the formal training component of the MFPA, the goal of the Market Ready program is to help food and beverage processors reach the “next level” of market readiness. By collecting best practices and lessons learned from experienced food producers, suppliers and business service providers, Market Ready helps to inform your business decisions while saving you time and expense. It also identifies the expectations of buyers, such as grocery stores, distributors and wholesalers, letting you know how to prepare your business to be successful in these markets. Whether you are preparing to sell your products to a local natural foods store or have your sights set on national distribution, Market Ready provides resources to help you navigate around these and other issues that businesses face. Market Ready gives you a direct line to the topic experts, many of whom are MFPA associate members and service providers. Working with MFPA staff, content is tailored to address the specific concerns of food and beverage manufacturers. The Market Ready program is delivered through live Technical Sessions and ondemand webinars. Technical Sessions are hosted throughout the state and open to MFPA members and nonmembers. These Technical Session presentations are also video recorded and collected on the MFPA members-only section of the website – a resource that can be easily accessed by members when they need this critical information. Here are some of our pilot Technical Sessions developed during our planning process.

“Surviving the FDA Inspection” with Cathe Morrill and Cynthia Fisher

“Investing in Plant and Equipment” with Prof. Scott Dunning

“Taking the Unknowns out of Food Testing” at Katahdin Analytical Services

“The Label Purchase: How to make informed decisions” at TrakTec

To see these and other Market Ready videos, go to mainefoodproducers.com and sign in today. Let us know what topics you would like to see covered next! Associate members interested in sponsoring and hosting a technical session? Contact the MFPA today! 84
