Revamped Roster Has Islanders lo Following his first season at the helm, head coach Tony Graystone went out and recruited heavily, bringing in 10 new players to go along with five returnees to make up his 15-player roster for the 2010 season. Record-setting outside hitter Emma Ridley, who was the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, and libero Jessica Jennett make up the Islanders senior class, while outside hitter Jessica Korda is a junior in her third year with program. Opposite hitter Shannon Hullum and outside hitter Sheridan Paulus round out the sophomore class. The Islanders will have just four upper classmen as the two seniors and one returning junior will be joined by junior college transfer Amanda Lowe at the middle blocker position. The other nine newcomers will enter the season as true freshmen. The outside hitter spot will be the veteran position on the team, with three players returning and just one newcomer in the four spots on the team. Ridley,

Korda and Paulus will be joined by newcomer Isabella Arcidiacono. Ridley will lead the team once again this year after receiving First-Team All-Southland and Newcomer of the Year honors following her junior season and being named preseason First-Team AllSouthland.. She led the conference and set a new Islander single-season record with 464 kills during the year. “After being named First-Team All-Southland Conference last fall, Emma spent the offseason improving on every part of her game,” said Graystone. “She is now a more complete player and will play an even bigger role on our team this year.” Korda will be in her third year with the program and will be a force offensively behind Ridley. “As a junior this fall, we are looking for Jessica to take her game to another level,” said Graystone. “When she is on, our team usually plays well, so it’s important for us to get consistent play from Korda this year.” Paulus will see time exclusively at the outside hitter position this season and should flourish with just one role to concentrate on. “Sheridan bounced back and forth between the outside and right side last season, but is now training full time as an outside hitter,” said Graystone. “She made some very solid gains and looks ready to compete for a bigger role this fall.” Arcidiacono is a true freshman that will have time to learn the system behind the other three outside hitters and should contribute throughout the year. “Bella is a gifted outside hitter who will have a great career for the Islanders,” said Graystone. “She has a very high ceiling and it won’t take her long to make an impact for us.” Getting the ball to the outside hitters will be three true freshmen at the setter position. Although young and inexperienced, the new players should make up for it with their improved

Logen Bourque is the tallest of the three, standing at 5-11 and naturally a hitter, who moved to the setter position upon arriving on campus. “Logen was signed to fill our setter position and improve our overall team speed and athleticism,” said Graystone. “We think very highly of Logen and are confident she will eventually become one of the top setters in the conference.” Brittani Loux is a natural setter but will see time as a defensive specialist as well during the year. “Brittani is going to train as both a setter and defensive specialist for us,” said Graystone. “We really like her potential at both positions are looking forward to seeing her develop and create a role for herself this fall.” The final setter is Renee Ramirez. She will also double at both the setter and defensive specialist position to find the roles that work best. “Renee was signed to give us depth at the setter and defensive specialist positions,” said Graystone. “She is very

Lowe will bring collegiate experience to the position as a transfer from Navarro Junior College. “Amanda is transferring in from Navarro College, and will be looking to fill one of our middle blocker positions,” said Graystone. “She can definitely score points and as an upper classman should give us some stability.” Alverson is a 6-1 middle blocker/ Jessica Jennett right side who will be counted on to Senior contribute as a freshman throughout the year. solid at both positions and will bring a lot “Brooke is a very active middle to our team this year.” blocker who will compete for playing time Jennett is the lone returnee at the right away,” said Graystone. “She has great libero position and the senior will be court presence and will bring a lot to our counted on to help bring along Micah program.” Nolan and Paige Hoffler, two freshmen Flemmer is also 6-1 and will bring at the position. While Ridley will be depended on for the bulk of the offense, Graystone believes the group will come together as a team to compete well in the Southland Conference this season. “We signed a lot of players that we felt could help us immediately,” said Graystone. “To me, talent doesn’t know an age. “They are young but they are still talented and can play right away. Obviously the team is going to revolve around Emma and we are going to lean on her to do pretty much everything. We will find roles to maximize the newcomer’s strengths but not put them in a position to do things they may not be ready for.”

Academic Services

The goal of the Center for Athletic Academic Services is to provide services that enhance the academic experience, assist in the retention and development of student-athletes. CAAS promotes the department’s CHAMPS/Life Skills and CHOICES programs and the five commitment areas (commitment to academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and service). Among the services offered are study hall, a computer lab, tutoring, as well as learning assistants. Scholastic supervisors work with the department, students, coaches, faculty and staff to coordinate an athlete’s schedule, academic eligibility, and provide support. The CAAS is located on the second floor of Classroom East and is directed by Jennifer Baker. She is assisted by Bailey Wilson, Kayleigh McCauley and Alfonso Ramos.

Athletic Director Tim Fitzpatrick Timothy Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic department on Wednesday, Aug. 19 2009 after spending four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana University athletic department. He fills the position that had been vacated since 2008. Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic director at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, department website, and publications. During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21,000,000 contract with Adidas and worked extensively with Learfield Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9,000,000 in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help generate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in excess of budgeted projections, a 15-percent improvement. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPN-AM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000. Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

This Is The In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions.

What

began as a small gathering

of college administrators more than ago, the

Southland Conference

47 years

has trans-

formed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of states.

12

Beginning

member universities in three

with a historic meeting of

Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary five institutions in

course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence.

On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock, Ark., metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the

and the

New Orleans area, to the Nacogdoches, Texas, and

historical cities of

Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has already broadcast nearly 70 events. In just its second year of production, the network has already received recognition for its work. It received a

College Sports MeCollege Sports Video Summit in Atlanta in June 2010 for it production of the 2009 McNeese State vs. Stephen F. Austin football game, which was judged the best live game or event in its category. The network also collected three prestigious Tell Awards. Entering its third season in 2010-11, the netdia Award at the

work will expand its reach to roughly

6 mil-

lion households throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

In February 2010, the Southland Conference learned it, in conjunction with the city of Frisco,Texas, and the Hunt Sports Group, would serve as the host of the NCAA Division I Football Championship game. The first of three championship games will be played Jan. 7, 2011 at

Pizza Hut Park

in

Fris-

co, which has been home to the conference office since

2006. Frisco

was recently named

the fastest growing city in the nation.

In addition to football, the Southland Conference can point to a number of accomplishments in all sports. Men’s basketball has experienced a tremendous amount of success during the

Southland’s 45-plus years. The league has sent two teams to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, as well as a squad to the NIT Final Four. Basketball stars Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Jeff Foster, Dwight “Bo” Lamar, Andrew Toney, Devin Brown, and Mike Oliver played in the Southland Conference. In 2006, Northwestern State, playing as the No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament, defeated No. 3 seed Iowa, 64-63, in first-round action. In 2008, the league saw two postseason teams (UT Arlington in the NCAA tournament and Stephen F. Austin in the NIT) for the first time since 2001. Coaches such as Billy Tubbs, Mike Vining, Scotty Robertson, Jack Martin, Andy Russo, Bobby Paschal and Pat Foster have led teams in the Southland. In women’s basketball, the Southland also has its share of tradition with Louisiana-Monroe advancing to the 1985 NCAA

The Southland consistently ranks among the top-10 conferences in the country. Major leaguers such as Ben Sheets, Micah Hoffpauir, Hunter Pence, David Segui, Brian Lawrence, Ben Broussard, Chuck Finley, Jerald Clark, and Terry Matthews once played in the league. Former UT Arlington shortstop, Trey Hillman, a three-time All-Southland selection from 1983-85, was manager for the Kansas City Royals from the 2007-10 seasons and coached the American League in the 2009 MLB All-Star Game. The 2010 Major League Baseball Draft was significant for the Southland as the league saw 17 players drafted pushing the all-time draft total to more than 400 selections (414). UT Arlington’s Michael Choice became the seventh Southland player taken in the first round, selected by Oakland with the 10th overall selection. He joins Ben Sheets (Louisiana-Monroe) as the league’s highest draft pick. The two are the only players in Southland history to be taken in the top 10 and
