HOCKNEY (15) Randall Wright | UK | 2014 | 113’ ‘Wider perspectives are needed now,’ states David Hockney, referencing both technical ways of seeing and the parameters of what we choose to view, in this spirited documentary spanning the artist’s career. Director Randall Wright is gifted a spectrum of archive material, which is pieced together with kaleidoscopic verve. Richest is Hockney’s own home-movie footage, taking in games of Scrabble with his family, giving candid insight into the painter’s relationship with his Bradford roots and the father he credits with a foundational credo – to never care what the neighbours think. As a character, Hockney emerges as a man of great friendships, a loyal cast of fellow artists chronicle his personal and artistic journey, each in possession of a crisp wit, bringing humour and light to the life of an artist who continues to broaden horizons.

Ffilm ddogfen sy’n rhychwantu gyrfa’r artist hwn, gyda darnau fideo cartref Hockney ei hun yn ganolog ac yn rhoi mewnwelediad i berthynas yr arluniwr o Bradford â’i wreiddiau. Fel cymeriad, mae Hockney’n ymddangos fel dyn o gyfeillgarwch mawr, gyda llu o’i gyd-artistiad yn croniclo ei siwrnai bersonol ac artistig.

BIG EYES (12A) Tim Burton | USA | 2014 | 106’ Any new film by Tim Burton will cause excitement. His new upcoming drama Big Eyes tells the true story of Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose striking portraits of children with massive eyes became a sensation in the Fifties and Sixties – though her husband, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), took all the credit for her work, claiming no one would buy art created by a woman, until a legal battle ensued to end his exploitation of her.

Bydd unrhyw ffilm newydd gan Tim Burton yn peri cyffro! Mae ei ddrama newydd Big Eyes yn adrodd hanes gwir Margaret Keane. Creodd portreadau trawiadol Margaret o blant a chanddynt lygaid mawr gynnwrf mawr yn y Pumdegau a’r Chwedegau, er mai ei gwr Walter Keane cymrodd y clod i gyd am ei gwaith, gan honni ni fyddai unrhyw un yn prynu celf a grëwyd gan fenyw, hyd nes i frwydr gyfreithiol gychwyn i’w atal rhag manteisio arni bellach.

BIRDMAN (15)

Alejandro González Iñárritu | USA | 2014 | 119’ A thrilling leap forward for director Alejandro González Iñárritu, comedy drama Birdman is an ambitious technical showcase powered by a layered story and outstanding performances from Michael Keaton and Edward Norton. Keaton plays an actor, Riggan Thomas, famous for once portraying the iconic superhero known at The Birdman but now washed up, as he struggles reinvent himself by mounting a Broadway play. As the events leading up to the Saturday night premiere prove to be one disaster after another, Thomas battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. Birdman is a true original; a work of technical wizardry, virtuoso acting, and compelling storytelling unlike anything we’ve seen before. It’s one of the wildest, funniest, most heartbreaking and purest performances on film. Ever. Mae’r ddrama gomedi Birdman yn ffilm uchelgeisiol dechnegol wedi ei gyrru gan stori haenog a pherfformiadau rhagorol gan Michael Keaton ac Edward Norton. Mae’r actor Riggan Thomas, a fu’n enwog am bortreadu’r arwr eiconig Birdman, erbyn hyn yn ceisio ail-danio’i yrfa trwy gymryd rhan mewn drama Broadway. Ond mae’r holl ddigwyddiadau sy’n arwain at noson gyntaf y sioe yn drychinebus mae Birdman yn ffilm wreiddiol, nid yw’n ymdebygu i un rhywbeth byddwch wedi ei gweld o’r blaen. Dyma i chi un o’r perfformiadau mwyaf gwyllt, doniol, torcalonnus a phur ar ffilm. Erioed.

BRINGING TIBET HOME (15) Tenzin Tsetan Choklay | USA | South Korea | India | Nepal | 2013 | 82’ When New York based Tibetan artist Tenzing Rigdol’s father passes away in exile with an unfulfilled wish to take his last breath in Tibet, Tenzing realises that his father’s dream to return home to his lost nation is shared by all exiles. Driven by this realisation, Tenzing embarks on a mission to reunite the Tibetan land with its people, literally, through an art project that involves smuggling 20,000 kilograms of native Tibetan soil to India, enabling thousands of exiled Tibetans to walk on their home soil. For many this is a reunion, for some, the first time that they set foot on their homeland and for a few, this is probably the last time that they ever see anything of their lost nation. Although this artwork examines the plight of the Tibetan people in exile, it also has wider resonance, exploring the notion of nostalgia, the idea of homeland and how art is intertwined with the political and the social. It also demonstrates the transgressive power of art as an act of defiance.

Pan mae tad Tenzing Rigdol yn marw mewn alltudiaeth gyda’i ddymuniad o gymryd ei anadl olaf yn Nhibet heb ei gyflawni, mae’n sylweddoli bod breuddwyd ei dad o ddychwelyd adref i’w genedl goll yn cael ei rannu gan bawb mewn alltudiaeth. Wedi ei yrru gan y sylweddoliad hwn, mae Tenzing yn mynd ati i ailuno tir Tibet â’i phobl, yn llythrennol, trwy brosiect celf oedd yn troi o gwmpas smyglo 20,000 cilogram o bridd brodorol Tibet i India, gan alluogi miloedd o bobl Tibet sydd mewn alltudiaeth i gerdded ar dir eu mamwlad. Er bod y celfwaith hwn yn archwilio cyflwr pobl Tibet sydd mewn alltudiaeth, mae ganddo atsain ehangach, sef cysyniad hiraeth a mamwlad. PART SUBTITLED

DAN Y WENALLT (15) Kevin Allen | UK | 2014 | 86’ Bydd y cyfarwyddwr Kevin Allen yn cyflwyno’r dangosiad ar 17 Ionawr, ac yn arwain sesiwn Cwestiwn ac Ateb yn ei ddilyn. Twin Town a osodwyd yn ei dref enedigol, Abertawe, oedd y ffilm gyntaf i Kevin ei chyfarwyddo, a derbyniodd y ffilm enwebiadau BAFTA am Gyfarwyddwr Gorau, Ffilm Orau, a Sgript Orau. Gwnaeth hefyd gyfarwyddo’r gyfres gomedi deledu a enwebwyd am Oscar, sef Benidorm, The Ballad of Honky Mc Swaine; Found In Translation, Y Syrcas (enillydd 5ed Gwobr Ffilmiau Lleiafrifol Ewrop) a Lights, Camera, Elephants. Yn 2012 sefydlodd Kevin fFATTI fFILMS gyda Grwp Cyfryngau Tinopolis. Gyda Rhys Ifans a Charlotte Church, ac yn cynnwys ymddangosiadau arbennig gan Gareth Edwards a’r Arglwydd Kinnock, Dan y Wenallt yw’r cynhyrchiad sinema cyntaf o ddrama wych Dylan Thomas ers ffilm Elizabeth Taylor a Richard Burton ym 1972. Mae’r ffilm hon yn gwyro i ffwrdd o’r myfyrdod llenyddol traddodiadol ar waith Thomas ac yn hytrach yn amlygu rhai o elfennau mwy angerddol y gwaith doniol, llifol a hudol wrth aros yn ffyddlon at y testun gwreiddiol. Wedi perfformio’n gyfan gwbl yn y Gymraeg gydag is-deitlau Saesneg.

Director Kevin Allen will introduce the screening on 17 Jan, and lead a Q & A session afterwards. Kevin made his directorial debut with cult feature Twin Town - set in his hometown, Swansea, which received BAFTA nominations for Best Director, Best Film and Best Screenplay. He also directed the BAFTA nominated TV comedy series Benidorm, The Ballad of Honky Mc Swaine; Found In Translation, Y Syrcas (winner of the 5th European Minority Film Award), and Lights, Camera, Elephants. In 2012 Kevin set up fFATTI fFILMS with the Tinopolis Media Group. Starring Rhys Ifans, Charlotte Church with guest appearances from Gareth Edwards and Lord Kinnock and directed by Kevin Allen (of Twin Town fame), Dan y Wenallt is the first cinema production of Dylan Thomas’s brilliant, haunting play since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s 1972 film. Adapted by T. James Jones, with a screenplay written by Murray Lachlan Young, Michael Breen and Kevin Allen, Dan y Wenallt veers away from the traditional, literal reflection of Thomas’s original work and instead explores some of the more visceral elements of the funny, filthily fluid and magical dreamscape of the work whilst staying faithful to Dylan Thomas’s original text. Performed entirely in Welsh with English subtitles. SUBTITLES / ISDEITLAU

LUNA (15)

Dave McKean | UK | 2014 | 104’ Director Dave McKean will be introducing this film and will hold a Q & A session afterwards. Renowned artist and filmmaker Dave McKean brings his distinctive style, signature whimsy and blend of live action and gorgeously wrought animation to this dreamlike reverie about four people whose weekend idyll in an isolated English seaside home becomes an opportunity for spiritual healing. Whether seen as a drama with fantastical elements or a fantasy with a powerfully dramatic core, Luna is a profound meditation on loss, grief, and the need to reconcile oneself with the past, holding forth hope without providing easy answers to the small and large tragedies that life throws our way. McKean once again distinguishes himself as a truly unique voice in the cinematic landscape.

Bydd cyflwyniad a sessiwn holi ac ateb ar ôl y ffilm yma gyda’r Cyfarwyddwr Dave McKean. Ffilm freuddwydiol am bedwar person sy’n cymryd penwythnos mewn ty anghysbell ar lan y môr fel cyfle ar gyfer iachau ysbrydol. Mae Luna, gall fod yn ddrama gydag elfennau rhyfeddol neu yn ffantasi gyda chraidd nerthol dramatig, yn fyfyrdod dwys ar golled, galar, a’r angen i gymodi â’r gorffennol, gan gynnig gobaith heb ddarparu atebion rhwydd i drasiedïau bach a mawr y mae bywyd yn taflu tuag atom. Unwaith eto, mae McKean yn profi fod ganddo lais hollol unigryw yn y dirwedd sinematig.

OPEN BETHLEHEM (PG) Leila Sansour | 2014 | Palestine | UAE | UK | 90’ Film director Leila Sansour returns to Bethlehem to make a film about her home town, soon to be encircled by a wall. Armed with her camera and a dilapidated family car that keeps breaking down, Leila plans to make an epic film about a legendary town in crisis but her life and the film take an unexpected turn. This remarkable film spans seven momentous years, revealing a city of astonishing beauty and political strife under occupation. It draws from 700 hours of original footage and some rare archive material, and has led to the creation of the largest visual archive of Bethlehem in the world.

Mae’r cyfarwyddwr Leila Sansour yn dychwelyd i Fethlehem i wneud ffilm am ei thref, bydd cyn hir wedi ei amgylchynu gan fur. Ei bwriad oedd gwneud ffilm epig am y dref chwedlonol hon, ond mae’r ffilm, a’i bywyd yn cymryd tro annisgwyl. Mae’r ffilm nodedig hon yn rhychwantu saith mlynedd bwysig iawn, yn datgelu dinas o harddwch syfrdanol a helynt gwleidyddol o dan feddiannaeth. Mae’n tynnu ar 700 awr o fideo gwreiddiol a pheth deunydd archif prin, gan arwain at greu’r archif gweledol fwyaf o Fethlehem yn y byd. SUBTITLES / ISDEITLAU

DELIGHT (15)

Gareth Jones | 2013 | UK | 105’ In this new film shot in Ceredigion former war photographer Echo goes looking for her one-time lover and comrade-in-arms - who has retired to obscurity in deepest West Wales – only to fall into a passionate love affair with his son. But Echo creates chaos among the small community, stirring up past betrayals, and discovering that raising ghosts is a dangerous game; her sexual abandon also triggers the unravelling of a trauma Echo has long buried for the sake of her children, and which now threatens to tear their lives apart. With nothing but the Welsh countryside and her young lover to console her, Echo is forced to confront her past. What price delight?

Yn y ffilm newydd hon sydd wedi ei ffilmio yng Ngheredigion, mae’r cyn ffotograffydd rhyfel Echo yn mynd ati i chwilio am ei chyn-gariad gariad a chyd-weithiwr, sydd wedi ymddeol i Orllewin Cymru. TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (12A) James Kent | UK | 2014 | 130’

Vera Brittain’s beloved WWI memoir is exquisitely realised in this moving and timely adaptation. Intelligent and free-spirited Vera overcomes the narrow-mindedness of her conservative parents, winning a scholarship to Oxford. Entranced by her brother’s dashing friend Roland, she plunges into an intoxicating romance. Blooming, in love and on the cusp of fulfilling her ambitions, Vera’s dreams are brutally shattered by the onset of war. When Roland and her brother ship out to the front, she abandons the cloistered environs of university life and volunteers as a nurse. Immediately confronted with the pitiless reality of the war’s victims, her life is irrevocably changed as she loses, one-byone, the young men she held so dear. Moving the dramatic shift from the idyllic English countryside to the stark horror of the battlefield, the film features marvellous performances from its fabulous cast who do collective justice to the memory of the ordinary heroes they portray.

Caiff cofiannau Ail Ryfel Byd Vera Britten eu haddasu ar gyfer y sgrin fawr yn y ffilm amserol a theimladwy hon. Mae Vera’n ennill ysgoloriaeth i Rydychen, yno mae’n syrthio mewn cariad âchyfaill ei brawd. Mae ar fin cyflawni ei huchelgeisiau pan mae’r rhyfel yn tarfu’n greulon ar y cwbl. Pan mae ei brawd a Roland ei chariad yn cael eu hanfon i’r ffrynt, mae hithau’n ymrestru fel nyrs. Yno mae’n wynebu realiti didrugaredd rhyfel yn syth, ac mae ei bywyd yn newid am byth wrth iddi golli, un ar y tro, y dynion ifanc a fu mor annwyl iddi. WILD (15)

Jean-Marc Vallée | USA | 2014 | 115’ In this captivating and richly satisfying adaptation of the best-selling 2012 memoir by Cheryl Strayed, Reese Witherspoon plays a young woman, reeling from a difficult break-up, who embarks on the gruelling 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail, walking through desert, snow, and over mountain ranges. Fresh from the success of Dallas Buyers Club, director Jean-Marc Vallée offers an epic appreciation of the country through which the ill-prepared Cheryl travels: rarely in recent times have American landscapes been filmed with such sweeping majesty. But this is also a very intimate tale, as the film explores the internal journey Cheryl experiences on her long trip, coping with emotional baggage as heavy as the hulking rucksack on her back. Witherspoon is outstanding in the lead role, at turns gutsy and vulnerable – she wears her walking boots with urgency and pride.

Addasiad gafaelgar a phleserus o gofiant Cheryl Strayed. Mae Reese Witherspoon yn chwarae rhan menyw ifanc, sydd yn dioddef yn dilyn diwedd perthynas, ac sy’n cychwyn allan ar lwybr llethol 1100 milltir y Pacific Crest, gan gerdded trwy’r anialwch, eira a dros gadwyni mynyddoedd. Mae’r ffilm yn arddangos tirwedd America ar ei orau wrth i Cheryl deithio drwyddi, ond mae hefyd yn archwilio’r daith fewnol y mae Cheryl yn profi ar ei siwrnai hir.

KON-TIKI (15) Joachim Rønning | Espen Sandberg | UK | Norway | 2012 | 118’ Part history lesson, part classic adventure tale and often stunning to watch, this wellcrafted retelling of an epic true story is a throwback to old-school adventure filmmaking that’s exciting and entertaining. The Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean in a balsawood raft in 1947, together with five men, to prove that South Americans back in pre-Columbian times could have crossed the ocean and settled on Polynesian islands. As they set off on an epic 101-day-long trip across 8000 kilometres, the world was waiting for the result of the trip. Heyerdahl wrote a book about the expedition that was translated into 70 languages and sold more than 50 millions copies around the world. The film is terrifically engaging and ravishingly photographed, an old-fashioned man-againstthe-elements adventure epic propelled by human-scaled heroics. It’s awesome in the true sense of the word: you sit in awe of the bravery, audacity, stupidity and natural power on display.

Ffilm sy’n rhannol yn wers hanes, rhannol yn stori antur glasurol ac yn aml yn syfrdanol i’w gwylio. Ym 1947, croesodd yr anturiwr Norwyaidd Thor Heyerdahl, ynghyd â phum dyn arall, y Môr Tawel mewn rafft bren balsa, i brofi y gallai trigolion De America fod wedi croesi’r Môr amser maith yn ôl a chyfanheddu Ynysoedd Polynesia. Ysgrifennodd Heyerdahl lyfr am y daith 101 diwrnod a werthodd mwy na 50 miliwn copi ar draws y byd. While watching a movie, Adam spots his double, a bit-part actor named Anthony Clair, and decides to track him down, after which the lives of these two identical men become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined. Like his better-known compatriot Jafar Panahi, dissident Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof was recently arrested and convicted on the flimsiest of pretexts by the Tehran authorities. But while waiting to serve his prison sentence, he courageously turned out the most politically provocative film to emerge from today’s Iran. Rejecting artful metaphors, the film follows with clinical concentration the daily grind of two hired killers working for the internal security service, as they track down and intimidate writers likely to fall foul of Islamic censorship strictures. Inspired by real-life events, the film pulls no punches, yet offers a shaded, humane portrait of both its flawed artists and vile functionaries. It’s a stirring act of defiance, shot in secret on Iranian locations with the credits removed to protect the identity of cast and crew…Rasoulof bravely excepted.

Yn ddiweddar cafodd y gwneuthurwr ffilmiau hwn o Iran ei arestio a’i gyhuddo yn Tehran. Ond wrth aros i fynd i’r carchar, bu digon dewr i gynhyrchu’r ffilm fwyaf gwleidyddol bryfoclyd i ddod o Iran yr oes sydd ohoni. Mae’r ffilm yn dilyn bywyd beunyddiol dau leiddiad hur sy’n gweithio i wasanaethau diogelwch mewnol, wrth iddynt olrhain a dychrynu ysgrifenwyr nad ydynt yn cydymffurfio â rheolau sensoriaeth Islamaidd. Wedi ei hysbrydoli gan ddigwyddiadau bywyd go iawn, mae’n ffilm ddi-flewyn-ar-dafod , wedi ei ffilmio’n gudd gyda’r cydnabyddiaethau wedi eu dileu i amddiffyn hunaniaeth y cast a’r criw....

MANAKAMANA (U)

Pacho Velez | Stephanie Spray | 2014 | USA | Nepal | 118’

This is an unique, astonishing film, filmed entirely inside the confines of a cable car that transports pilgrims to worship at the ancient Manakamana Temple, a shrine to the Hindu goddess Bhagwati, high above the Nepalese jungle. The film creates a detailed picture of the passengers’ lives through following their shared conversations, anecdotes, observations, and even their silence, to ultimately deliver a story about history, tradition and change. Often funny, Manakamana also possesses a serious and sublime spirituality as the filmmakers give each of their subjects’ treks the feel of a divine pilgrimage, with no true beginning or end. Whenever the passing verdant landscape vanishes into ethereal cloud cover, it’s as if we’re moving between states of being. In this context, the most mundane conversation might suddenly take on a metaphysical grandeur, while every moment of silence feels fleetingly precious. You could hardly ask for a more beautiful vision of souls in transit.

Dyma i chi ffilm unigryw a rhyfeddol, wedi ei ffilmio’n gyfan gwbl o fewn car cebl sy’n cludo pererinion i addoli yn Nheml hynafol Manakamana, cysegrfa i’r dduwies Hindi Bhagwati, yn uchel uwchben jyngl Nepal. Mae’r ffilm yn creu darlun manwl; o fywydau’r teithwyr trwy ddilyn eu sgyrsiau, straeon ac arsylwadau a hyd yn oed eu distawrwydd, i gyflwyno yn y bôn stori am hanes, traddodiad a newid. Yn aml yn ddigrif, mae gan Manakamana ysbrydolrwydd difrifol aruchel. Pa bynnag bryd mae’r tirlun gwyrdd yn diflannu i gymylau nefolaidd, mae fel petai ein bod yn symud rhwng cyflyrau o fod. Ni ellir gofyn am weledigaeth harddach o eneidiau ar daith. SUBTITLES / ISDEITLAU

WITH LIVE VOCAL SCORE BY JASON SINGH FOLLOWED BY Q&A WITH JASON SINGH

In this very special event with the Mwldan Film Festival vocal sculptor Jason Singh performs a remarkable live vocal score to John Grierson’s monumental silent film, Drifters. Premiering alongside Battleship Potemkin in 1929, Drifters follows North Sea herring fisherman through their dramatic daily routines as well as their underlying struggles between tradition, modernity, technology, the environment and nature. Singh’s score is a totally unique performance which combines live vocal sound effects, voice manipulation, beatboxing and live sampling with one of the most significant works in British film history, made by the man who is considered to be the father of British documentary film. Mae’r cerfluniwr lleisiol Jason Singh yn perfformio sgôr lleisiol byw i Drifters, ffilm fud John Grierson. Mae Drifters yn dilyn pysgotwyr penwaig ym Môr y Gogledd trwy eu gorchwylion dyddiol dramatig ynghyd â’u brwydrau rhwng traddodiad, modernedd, technoleg, yr amgylchedd a natur.
