Letter FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers,

I

t is with great pleasure that we bring you another issue of Tampa Bay Wellness Magazine. This month, our feature interview is with Daniel Amen, MD. Dr. Amen is a physician, child and adult psychiatrist, brain imaging specialist, bestselling author, Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the CEO and medical director of Amen Clinics, Inc. He has devoted his career to studying the brain and learning how we can make our bodies and lives better through improving and optimizing our brain function. I first heard of Dr. Amen a few years ago, when I picked up one of his books entitled Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaining Optimal Mental Performance. I really enjoyed that book and followed a good portion of its protocols. My enthusiasm for brain advice and science, and what I perceive to be the media’s under-representation of that, is what prompted me to ask for an PUBLISH ED

interview with Dr. Amen. Lucky for all of us, he obliged! I feel confident that you will learn a great deal from our Q & A interview with him. I also hope that you enjoy our other articles this month. We worked hard to bring you the latest information on health and wellness, especially in relation to nutrition. After all, we are what we eat, so let’s eat well! If you become enlivened and inspired by this month’s information, you can follow-up with us next month when we feature an interview with Dr. Dean Ornish. Of course we hope that you follow up with us every month. As always, feel free to drop us a line and say hello. Have a great month. See you next time.

NOW OPEN Affordable Lab Tests Now® (ALTN) The health care industry is one sticky wicket to navigate, with deductibles through the roof—if you’re lucky enough to have insurance. On the flip side, for the uninsured, it’s often a matter of paying the mortgage or buying groceries over getting some seemingly minor illness checked out. Either way, the truth is that minor illness can lead to something major if it’s not caught in time. Affordable Lab Tests Now (ALTN) makes it easy. No insurance? No problem, they say. It’s a company run on passion and commitment. ALTN’s drive to create an avenue for people to take control of their own health care. ALTN’s plan moves away from the model of other lab collection environments. A convenient retail site diminishes some of the clinical feel. ALTN amps up the comfort level with lounge chairs in a pleasant setting. Customer service goes above and beyond moving clients through an assembly line.

With one location now in New Port Richey, ALTN plans aggressive expansion, with new facilities opening every three to four months. ALTN wants to build relationships and bring back that element of caring. ALTN emphasizes, “we don’t offer treatment—we’re strictly an avenue to point you in the right direction to put healthcare back in your own hands. We’re letting you know you don’t have to forgo important tests for fear of cost: we’re volume-driven and have the best prices.” Test results are forwarded to the client’s own physician or one working with ALTN in their community. A big part of ALTN’s referrals will include helping clients go the non-pharmaceutical route if they choose. We have on-site healthcare consultants to facilitate you with the specialty lab tests. ALTN promotes awareness to practitioners and the

public that there are options in testing and managing preventative healthcare. It presents a workable alternative for the uninsured, the self-insured and those with high deductibles. You can’t take care of yourself unless you know what’s wrong with you. Lab tests are inexpensive way to point out problems ALTN is a company built on a solid foundation of compassion and service, making the lab results readily and affordable available to you, so clients can be proactive about their health without the worry of chronic illness looming in the background. ichard’s Foodporium™ has been known throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties for 30 years as Richard’s Whole Foods. In 1979, Richard Downey had a vision to open up a chain of health food stores that would offer high quality and affordable natural foods. In 1997 John Rorer and his former business partners bought

the Richards Whole Food chains from Richard Downey’s wife. Over the next eight years, they grew Richards Whole Foods to the 11 locations it has today. In 2005 Rorer decided to buy the chain from his partners to venture into further markets and embrace the evolving Natural and Specialty foods genre. Needing to set Richards Whole Foods aside from all other competition, Rorer began thinking of new names while still keeping the same mission. After many attempts and ideas, it came to Rorer, “Richard’s Foodporium™”. John Rorer encompassed the word food and emporium to brand the name Foodporium™. Foodporium™ is defined as a uniquely nostalgic shopping experience that provides a wide variety of natural and specialty foods at affordable

According to the US Department of Justice, every two minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes, with 60% still being left unreported, often because survivors feel guilty, ashamed or scared they will not be believed. Last weekend, the Crisis Center provided forensic exams for seven rape victims in just 24 hours.

wellness news Thigh Muscles Grow in Elderly from Increased Insulin Supply Recently, scientists have recognized that loss of responsiveness to insulin plays a major role in the loss of physical strength that occurs as people grow older. Now, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston researchers have demonstrated that by increasing insulin levels above the normal range in elderly test subjects, they can restore the impaired muscle-building process responsible for age-related physical weakness.

HOSPITAL CATCHES 3,000 BABIES VIA NATURAL CHILDBIRTH

T

his year, UC San Diego Medical Center celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Birth Center—California’s only in-hospital unit dedicated to natural childbirth. During the anniversary, which also coincides with National Midwifery Week, the Center is due to receive its 3,000th baby. Distinct from a labor and delivery service, the UCSD Birth Center specializes in caring for women who

have a full-term, low-risk pregnancy. The midwives partner with family members and sometimes a doula, or birth assistant, to create a mom-centered, safe and satisfying birth without anesthesia or continuous fetal monitoring. If intervention is needed, access to a team of nationally recognized specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, obstetrics, anesthesia and neonatology is available. The midwife team reports a primary Cesarean section rate of 13 percent compared to the national average of 31 percent. In addition to a low C-section rate, the midwives have a 74 percent success rate for vaginal births after C-section. Their episiotomy rate is less than one percent. “In the majority of circumstances, women can birth independently without intervention,” said Frederick’s midwife Karen Ruby Brown, CNM, MSN. “Movies and television often portray birth as chaotic, directing the mother to count and push harder and longer in a frenzy that peaks at birth. This is fiction. In reality, a family can quietly and joyfully witness the transition from pushing to crowning to birth to bonding without a lot of noise, light, or chaos. The process is transformational and can happen in the birth center or on labor and delivery with anesthesia.” - Newswise

CHANGE IN CHEMOTHERAPY TIMING IMPROVES SURVIVAL ODDS

W When most people think of insulin, they think of diabetes - a disease that arises when, for one reason or another, insulin can’t do the critical job of helping the body process sugar. But the hormone has another, less well-known function. It’s also necessary for muscle growth, increasing blood flow through muscle tissue, encouraging nutrients to disperse from blood vessels and itself serving as a biochemical signal to boost muscle protein synthesis and cell proliferation.

hen Darcy Kazmier volunteered for a new type of treatment for breast cancer, it was for a pretty basic reason. “I just wanted to get the chemo over more quickly,” she told CBS News Correspondent Cynthia Bowers. But she never imagined that simply decreasing the time between chemotherapy sessions would wind up increasing her odds of survival. A four-year study released Thursday found that administering a lower dose of chemo drugs more frequently led to a 31 percent drop in the death rate -- and a 26 percent reduction in the recurrence of cancer. Other benefits included

fewer side effects and a shorter term of treatment. The key to the success is the drug Neupogen. Because toxic chemotherapy drugs kill healthy cells along with malignant ones, a three-week interval between treatments was needed to allow the body’s bone marrow to recover and begin producing white blood cells. Neupogen boosts the production of these infection fighters, which allows patients to handle a two-week cycle. “We’re really talking about saving tens of thousands of lives every year in the United States alone,” Norton said. - CBS News

“Insulin is normally secreted during food intake,” said Dr. Elena Volpi, senior author of a paper on the study published in the September issue of Diabetologia. “When you give insulin intravenously and increase the blood insulin levels to the same amount produced after a meal, you see that in young people it stimulates protein synthesis and muscle growth, while in older people it really doesn’t. But when we gave seniors double the insulin they would normally produce after eating, their muscles were stimulated like those of young people.”

FREE RESOURCE FOR CANCER PATIENTS AND FAMILIES IN TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES The NavigateCancer Foundation (NCF), a nonprofit staffed by oncology professionals, provides patient advocacy tools and services for cancer patients and families, is filling an especially vital role as the ranks of the unemployed and uninsured steadily swell. Since launching in 2008, NCF’s experienced and credentialed clinical staff has helped hundreds of adult cancer patients and families understand and improve their cancer care. The personalized services allow patients to learn about their specific disease and navigate their way through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship to make it easy for them to create a plan of action and ensure that the best medical decisions are made. Statistics show that the uninsured, underinsured and those patients with low income or education levels are more likely to die from cancer than those with adequate resources

and education. Also included in this category are patients who live far from healthcare services. The lack of available resources affects the quality of treatment they receive. The foundation was formed to mitigate the impact of shrinking health-care resources. While everyone has access to some type of care and assistance, NCF is the only organization of its kind that offers 100 percent professional help, and will help patients advocate for themselves regardless of their circumstances. Supported by private donations and grants, NCF aims to improve cancer care by providing easily accessible tools and services to promote selfadvocacy and supplement the care patients receive from their medical professionals. For more information or to make a donation visit the foundation’s Web site at www.navigatecancerfoundation.org

One of the most complex and perplexing problems in dentistry is infection. The oral cavity is a sea of microorganisms normally living in balance with the entire human body. Under certain conditions “disease causing” microorganisms can become the dominant life forms, thus creating what we call infection.

Q: What is Oxygen/Ozone Treatment? A:Oxygen/Ozone, when introduced, disinfects the

area treated in a safe and effective manner. The infective microorganisms, which lack a natural defense against the ozone, become overstressed and die. At the same time, the ozone supports the surrounding healthy tissue without toxic side effects. Staying within the accepted standard of care, with proper application, oxygen/ozone can enhance the outcome in all aspects of dentistry. For example, in infected root canals oxygen/ozone helps disinfect more areas of the tooth because of its penetrating ability, even into the smallest canals and tubules. This allows for a more biological root canal and thus retention of your natural teeth.

Q: Is There Any Science To Support Oxygen/ Ozone Therapy? A: The scientific literature in support of the ef-

fectiveness and safety of oxygen/ozone therapy is vast. In the early 1900’s, the Swiss dentist E.A. Fisch introduced the concept of oxygen/ozone in dentistry. He was followed by Dr. E. Payr, who introduced this treatment into the medical community. Scientifically we now understand how and why oxygen/ozone therapies work so well. This has lead to many treat-

ment advances in the last number of years. Recently the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology reviewed and accepted Oxygen/Ozone in Dentistry as scientifically valid.

Q: Can I be Allergic to Oxygen/Ozone? A: No. It is impossible to be allergic to oxygen/

ozone. Ozone is just an energized form of oxygen. Ozone is naturally formed by the sun and lightning in storms. Without the ozone layer high in the atmosphere, life could not exist on our planet. Ozone actually filters out the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and, in addition, makes for that beautiful blue color in the sky. (Chapter from International Academy of Oral medicine and Technology information sheet).

BETTER BRAIN, BETTER BODY: AN INTERVIEW WITH DANIEL AMEN, MD

The brain is such an important organ, yet many of us don’t seem to give it much attention. Why do you think that is? We get no education in school about how to take care of our brain, even though it’s more important than any subject. It’s your brain that helps you to be happy or sad. It’s your brain that gets you through school. It’s your brain that helps you fall and stay in love. But you can’t see it like you can see your skin or the fat on your hips. My whole professional life changed when I started to look at the brain, because very shortly thereafter I developed good-brain envy and I wanted my brain to be better, and I wanted my patients’ brains to be better. It’s really put me on a path of optimizing peoples’ brains.

You don’t want a smaller brain. With a smaller brain comes less money, less love, less longevity. If your brain controls everything that you do, you don’t want it deteriorating. Are there one or two vitamins or supplements that every American should be taking now, but may not be? We realize there may be many, but is there one or two that you emphasize?

I think of imaging like radar. If the problem is really clear—like it’s a clear day and you can land the plane without radar—you go ahead and treat the problem. If it’s not clear—say it’s stormy out and you really don’t understand what’s going on—imaging can be so helpful to clarify things.

Bill Cosby once said, “I am what I ate, and I’m frightened.” You are in many ways what you eat. Your body’s cells make themselves new repeatedly through your nutrition. If you have a fast food diet, you’re likely to have a fast food mind and a body that has been super-sized. You want to be very careful with what you put in your body.

16 NOVEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

If your mood, thinking, or your behavior is interfering with your ability to be your best, and you’ve read books like mine and done what we say to do and you are still struggling. It’s a sign of mental health that when you are struggling you ask for help. It’s a sign of mental illness to be in denial, because your family suffers, your employer suffers, and your community suffers. What can you tell us about the work you do with SPECT imaging and how you determine if it’s appropriate for an individual to incorporate that into treatment?

How important is the connection between nutrition and good brain function?

It’s funny: I was just at the clinic, and we had a patient who came to see us from Vancouver, Canada. He was very sweet, and he brought me a present of maple sugar candy. I thought, “I’m grateful, but this is not a good brain present.” Sugar is toxic to your body. It enhances inflammation. I have a new book coming out in February called Change Your Brain, Change Your Body.” One of the studies in it that I quote is a study from UCLA where researchers found that overweight and obese people have dramatically decreased brain tissue when they are compared them to healthy people.

How does a person know when it’s time to enlist the help of a doctor, whether that is a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or both? When is a good time to stop with the self-help books and seminars and enlist some professional help?

You have written so many books. For someone who reads this interview and wants to learn more, is there a certain book that you recommend he or she start with? Everyone should take a good multiple vitaminmineral supplement each day. Most Americans are not eating five servings of fruits and vegetables per day—the minimum required to get the nutrition you need. Everyone, I believe, should be taking an Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplements, because Omega-3 Fatty Acids have found to be low in depression, low in Alzheimer’s disease, low in ADD, and low in people who are suicidal.

For most people, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life is a great book to start with. The other book would be Magnificent Mind at Any Age. Those two books would give anyone a good sense of my work and my thinking on how to treat brain problems and optimize brain function. What is new right now, with you and your work?

BETTER BRAIN, BETTER BODY:

AN INTERVIEW WITH DANIEL AMEN, MD

“We really need to be THINKING about optimizing brain function, and using what we know about the BRAIN to help with this horrible crisis of obesity. Two thirds of Americans are now overweight, and our society is going the WRONG WAY.” The thing that is newest for me, is that in my new book Change Your Brain, Change Your Body, I really take on the issue of obesity and brain function. I talk about total connection: That if you’re obese, it’s an eating disorder; and it needs to be thought of a brain disorder. In order to get healthy, the first organ is your brain, not stapling your stomach. It’s your brain that pushes you away from the table. It’s your brain that decides whether or not to have the second bowl of ice cream. We really need to be thinking about optimizing brain function, and using what we know about the brain to help with this horrible crisis of obesity. Two thirds of Americans are now overweight, and our society is going the wrong way. It’s estimated that my grandson’s generation is not likely to outlive its parents. We have to stop that. It’s an emergency, especially when you have fast food restaurants on every corner. What many people don’t know is that the combination of sugar, salt, and fat works on the morphine or heroine centers of the brain.

www.tampabaywellness.com

These companies know how to get you addicted. More people die every year from obesity than alcoholism. Obesity is the third leading preventable cause of death. Are there any hobbies that you particularly enjoy besides table tennis? I’m a new grandpa…I’m totally in love with my three month old grandbaby. I love to write. Even though I do it as part of my profession, I love to write. I also love hanging out with my kids and my wife. Thanks to Dr. Amen for his interview with us this month. ACAI & OTHER BERRIES: FACT OR FICTION?

By Kathy Allen, M.A., R.D., L.D., C.S.O. Manager, Department of Nutrition, Moffitt Cancer Center

W

hat’s all this I hear about acai berries? Are they really as magical as they sound?

These trendy, small Brazilian berries, claimed to be found solely in the rainforest and only recently introduced to the Northern Hemisphere, have gained much popularity due to their purported health benefits. The prevalence of products containing this so-called Super Food is truly remarkable. Acai (ahsigh-EE) berry weight loss plans have been hyped as everything from a diet miracle to rip-off scam. Part of the allure seems to be the scarcity of the berries, which can “only” be found in the Brazilian rainforest. The advertisements for these products suggest that they have the ability to help shed pounds, flatten tummies, cleanse colons, enhance sexual desire and prevent cancer, among a long list of other things. And then there are the business opportunities – selling the product to your friends and relatives, and then letting them in on the ground floor so they, too, can become a distributor. Sound familiar? OK, now let’s get to the facts … It is true that the acai berry comes from a species of palm tree native to Central and South America, from Belize south to Brazil and Peru, and they do grow mainly in swamps and floodplains. These berries have been used as a major food source for years in the Amazon region of Brazil. The juice and pulp are used in smoothies, on ice cream and as a flavoring for several other products, including liqueurs. Although many consumers are familiar with the concept of antioxidants neutralizing free radicals, 18 NOVEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

they are often confused by various products claiming to have a superior antioxidant capacity. The answer lies in how the tests are conducted and which results are made public by the manufacturer. Results from a recent study, for example, demonstrated higher antioxidant activity in pomegranate, Concord grape, blueberry and black cherry juices when compared to acai berry juice. Other research has shown that all edible berries, including acai, are rich in cancer-fighting chemicals known as phytochemicals. Strawberries and raspberries are particularly rich in a phytochemical called ellagic acid, which is a potent antioxidant and has been shown to help the body deactivate certain carcinogens. Blueberries contain the phenolic compounds anthocyanosides, which are among the most potent antioxidants yet discovered. Grapes and grape juice are rich sources of resveratrol, another phytochemical from the phenol family that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Even so, the extent to which antioxidants by themselves promote health is debatable. There’s no scientific evidence to support claims that acai berries or any other fruit juice performs any of the other commonly advertised functions. Scientists have also found that in the world of fruits, vegetables and phytochemicals, 1+1 does not always equal 2 but may equal 3. When specific phytochemicals have been extracted from a food to study the antioxidant properties, the potency is lower than that which is found when the phytochemical is tested in

the form of whole food. Eating phytochemicals in the proportion and combination nature intended seems to have a synergistic effect. Simply put, there is much greater benefit to be found in eating the whole food, such as whole berries or grapes, as opposed to taking a juice extract, powder or pill. Eating a variety of nutrient- and phytochemicaldense fruits and veggies has a much greater impact on overall health and cancer risk reduction than taking an individual supplement. Although blueberries and raspberries may not have the sex appeal as acai berries, they pack the same punch and can put a few dollars back in your wallet. Drinking pomegranate juice or, better yet, eating pomegranates can give you more antioxidants, fiber and the added benefit of consuming fewer calories. As a colleague of mine put it, “Acai berries are the blueberries and raspberries of South America.” My advice: Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day. Save the money you might be spending on acai berries and treat yourself to a good massage -- and a nice bowl of berries.

CHOOSE CARBOHYDRATES

WISELY

arbohydrates are part of a healthful diet. Dietary fiber is composed of nondigestible carbohydrates and lignin intrinsic and intact in plants. Diets rich in dietary fiber have been shown to have a number of beneficial effects, including decreased risk of coronary heart disease and improvement in laxation. There is also interest in the potential relationship between diets containing fiberrich foods and lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Sugars and starches supply energy to the body in the form of glucose, which is the only energy source for red blood cells and is the preferred energy source for the brain, central nervous system, placenta, and fetus. Sugars can be naturally present in foods (such as the fructose in fruit or the lactose in milk) or added to the food. Added sugars, also known as caloric sweeteners, are sugars and syrups that are added to foods at the table or during processing or preparation (such as high fructose corn syrup in sweetened beverages and baked products). Although the body’s response to sugars does not depend on whether they are naturally present in a food or added to the food, added sugars supply calories but few or no nutrients. Consequently, it is important to choose carbohydrates wisely. Foods in the basic food groups that provide carbohydrates—fruits, vegetables, grains, and milk—are important sources of many nutrients. Choosing plenty of these foods, within the context of a calorie-controlled diet, can promote health and reduce chronic disease risk. However, the greater the consumption of foods containing large amounts of added sugars, the more difficult it is to consume enough nutrients without gaining weight. Consumption of added sugars provides calories while providing little, if any, of the essential nutrients. - www.nutrition.gov

INGREDIENTS OF A PERMANENT FITNESS PLAN by Lynn Gray

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat” • SET your fitness goal – one month, 3 month, a year. Be specific...and dare a mighty goal both short term and long term. • WRITE down your plan or have a coach format one...without a plan, you will get off course...even get lost. How do you know where you are going if you don’t have your route set. • BE CONSISTENT – weave it into your lifestyle; establish permanency. • REMEMBER the 3 parts of your body: legs, core, and arms; they must become strong and flexible; as we age, we lose strength, flexibility, posture. • ADD variety with your workouts; both in length and pace. • RUN with others...they will help you be accountable and great decisions are usually made “on the road”...or is it the golf course??? • LEARN to go slow...so eventually you can go fast; all exercise is not supposed to be mentally and/or physically hard. Think quality, not quantity. • EXPECT life to get in your way...it is how you pick yourself up and begin again that will be the important measure of how you progress. • VISUALIZE yourself as a fit person, as one finishing strong, and practice finishing each exercise experience finishing strong. • TAKE time to reflect, quiet time that validates the goodness you did for your physical and mental state. • WARM up and cool down for at least 5 minutes then stretch. • PRACTICE yoga, swimming, tai chi, or some type of flexibility program to keep you agile; if you can afford it, get a massage at least once a month. • GO long distances to get strong, to lose weight, and develop endurance...be it walking, jogging, running, or a combination of all three. • SPEND time with a young person once a week....their thoughts and motions will remind you of what it is like feeling young. 20 NOVEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

ETHNIC SKIN: MYTH:

Those with darker skin needn’t be concerned about skin cancer.

FACT:

This misconception can be the kiss of death — literally. While ethnic skin provides some built-in “sun block” against the rays that can kill, its natural protection (approximating SPF 10) isn’t enough to promise immunity.

MYTH:

Darker skin is more oily than lighter skin tones.

FACT:

This issue is less black and white than once thought. While oil might be more visible on darker skin, ethnic skin spans the whole spectrum of skin types — oily, normal, dry and combination — just like light skin.

Along with her signature brow lift with BOTOX®, Dr. Mercedes is growing longer, fuller and darker lashes with LATISSE® – the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for inadequate eyelashes. Start to see the progress in as early as 8 weeks, and in just 16 weeks you’ll notice a big difference, and so will others!

IS IT ANY DIFFERENT?

DERMATOLOGISTS SAY “DEFINITELY!”

It’s true that skin is more alike across ethnicities than many people know. Still, dermatologists are trained to treat people differently based on skin color — and those with ethnic skin should likewise take care to treat their own skin in a special way. Brown and white skin are pretty similar under the surface. But the same brown pigment, called melanin, that offers darker skin some protection from the sun — and can keep people looking younger — can, on the other hand, leave disfiguring marks behind from even an ordinary bout of acne. “Dark skin is a blessing as it relates to sun damage and aging,” says Susan C. Taylor, M.D., director of the Skin of Color Center in New York and author of Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair and Nails (HarperCollins, 2003). “A 50-year-old woman of color often looks 40, while a white woman of the same age might look 10 years older than her real age.” But, the dermatologist continues, “skin of color can cause significant problems, as well.”

BY TAMAR NORDENBERG

WHEN PRETTY SKIN BECOMES PROBLEM SKIN Without proper care, melanin can permanently mar the skin’s thin protective blanket. Among the melanin-blamed skin problems in darker-skinned persons with African, Hispanic, Middle Eastern or Asian ancestry: • Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Skin damage as minor as a scratch or a pimple triggers excess melanin production and results in dark patches. Without prompt attention, the marks can last for months and even years before they fade. • Postinflammatory hypopigmentation. Burns or other skin trauma leaves lighter areas as unwelcome reminders. • Keloids. Injuries leave behind large, raised scars. Still, skin of color is anything but doomed to disfigurement. An ounce of prevention, by gentle treatment and consistent sunscreen use, can go far to keep ethnic skin healthy and beautiful. - www.health.discovery.com

Prevention A negative stained transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicting some of the ultrastructural morphology of the A/CA/4/09 swine flu virus.

IS THE H1N1 FLU MORE DANGEROUS THAN SEASONAL FLU? By: Donald E. Lighter, M.D.

F

lu season is expected every November through March, and usually peaks during February. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 5 to 20 percent of the people in the United States get seasonal flu each year. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu-related complications, and about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes. When the 2009 H1N1 virus was identified in April 2009, the CDC warned that these numbers could be much higher for the 2009/2010 flu season.

The 2009 H1N1 virus is genetically different from the seasonal flu virus; however, the resulting symptoms, incubation period and contagious period are generally the same. Also, the treatment for someone infected with the 2009 H1N1 virus is the same as that for someone infected with the seasonal flu virus. In fact, people who are sick with the flu would not know if they have the seasonal flu or H1N1 virus unless a medical test was conducted. For something that seems like just another strain of flu, the H1N1 virus is causing quite a commotion. It is a “novel” virus, which means that it is a new virus that most people have never been infected with before. There is some speculation that older adults who experienced the 1968 Hong Kong flu pandemic may have some cross immunity, but that is still under review. With the possible exception of this older age group, people have not had the chance to build natural antibodies to fight this virus. This makes nearly everyone susceptible to it; thus, it can spread very quickly. Also when people get sick from a virus they have never been exposed to, their bodies have no prior experience with how to battle it, so it can become dangerous before the immune system figures out how to respond. Thus, even if it sounds like just another flu strain, the H1N1 virus should be taken seriously, especially since it is currently the most dominant influenza virus in circulation around the world.

24 NOVEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

To help slow the rapidly spreading H1N1 virus, people should follow the same advice that applies for seasonal flu, with the most important being to get vaccinated. There is a separate vaccine for seasonal flu and a new vaccine for the H1N1 virus. One vaccine will not protect against the different strains of the virus; thus, it is recommended that people get both. It is also important that people check with their physicians and insurance providers for information and guidance on getting vaccinated. Additionally, more H1N1 virus information, the latest flu updates and health care guidance can be found on the CDC’s Web site: http://www.cdc. gov/h1n1flu/. DR. DONALD LIGHTER is WellCare Health Plan, Inc.’s Vice President for Quality Improvement. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. yes open. What time is it? Where are you? Your mind feels fuzzy and confused. As consciousness engages, your wake up program boots up. Perhaps you yawn and stretch, gently easing yourself upright. Perhaps your feet hit the floor running because you already feel behind schedule, as you mentally create and review your endless “to be done” list . The year is 2009 and you are still on planet earth. Things have changed a bit since you first came on the scene. Pause for a moment. What do you notice? In the stillness, you hear a clock in the background - tick, tick, tick, tick. Time is passing. Go deeper inside yourself. Can you hear the beating of your heart? When is the last time you listened to this basic assertion of your existence and significance? When have you last consulted this oracle of profound truth? As you look around things may appear pretty normal. But, are they? Sometimes it is hard to see things when we are immersed in them. There is that clock in the background tick, tick, ticking. What have you tuned out or toned down? Have you allowed something in, that perhaps, does not belong? There is continuous suffering in the world around us. This can be both hard to look at and hard to ignore. Perhaps you have your own suffering that connects you to that imposing overlay. The majority 26 NOVEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

of us feels and reacts to this influence in some way and this often creates a middle ground life experience that is disempowering. Now, more than ever, it is important to know who you really are. It is critical that you not define yourself by that which is external.

Many of us may have similar or related missions. Can you imagine how powerful it would be, if all of us were consciously on track with our mission? Can you imagine what a different place the world would be if all the politicians and world leaders operated from this place?

Years ago I attended a workshop in which I was given a powerful and yet simple tool. I have shared this tool with others when they have been overwhelmed, anxious, fearful or felt lost. It is no longer novel or unusual, but most people don’t take the time to do it. In order to apply this tool you must first connect with that deep place inside yourself. You must seek the counsel of your heart and ask this question, “What is my mission?”

On a more personal level, having a mission statement dispels anger, stress, fear and self judgment. Take the time to write your mission statement so that the next time someone is unpleasant, or you have a setback or disappointment, you don’t get lost in your emotions. You can simply refer to your mission statement to make sure you are still on track. Then continue moving forward rather than getting stuck. Having a mission statement is like having a GPS that is always loaded with the most current and accurate maps. It is a check in point that restores calm when big and little things go awry.

A mission is different than goals. Goals are important, but, they are related to that which is external. They help us to attain and achieve. A mission statement comes from a place of being, that informs your actions. It is connected to who you are and basic principles that you value. It satisfies something deeper than ego. While it connects to and supports your purpose, it is different than your purpose. It exists at the level of your essence. Perhaps your mission is to connect with and share beauty or love. Perhaps it is to acknowledge and speak deep truth. Perhaps it is to appreciate nature or to, in some way, be a conduit for inspiration. Perhaps it is connected to joy.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH: Tips for Parents & Educators

CREATE A SENSE OF BELONGING. Feeling connected and welcomed is essential to children’s positive adjustment, self-identification, and sense of trust in others and themselves. Building strong, positive relationships among students, school staff, and parents is important to promoting mental wellness.

PROMOTE RESILIENCE. Adversity is a natural part of life and being resilient is important to overcoming challenges and good mental health. Connectedness, competency, helping others, and successfully facing difficult situations can foster resilience.

DEVELOP COMPETENCIES. Children need to know that they can overcome challenges and accomplish goals through their actions. Achieving academic success and developing individual talents and interests helps children feel competent and more able to deal with stress positively. Social competency is also important. Having friends and staying connected to friends and loved ones can enhance mental wellness.

ENSURE A POSITIVE, SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT. Feeling safe is critical to students’ learning and mental health. Promote positive behaviors such as respect, responsibility, and kindness. Prevent negative behaviors such as bullying and harassment. Provide easily understood rules of conduct and fair discipline practices and ensure an adult presence in common areas, such as hallways, cafeterias, locker rooms, and playgrounds. Teach children to work together to stand up to a bully, encourage them to reach out to lonely or excluded peers, celebrate acts of kindness, and reinforce the availability of adult support.

TEACH AND REINFORCE POSITIVE BEHAVIORS AND DECISION MAKING. Provide consistent expectations and support. Teaching children social skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution supports good mental health. “Catch” them being successful. Positive feedback validates and reinforces behaviors or accomplishments that are valued by others.

ENCOURAGE HELPING OTHERS. Children need to know that they can make a difference. Pro-social behaviors build self-esteem, foster connectedness, reinforce personal responsibility, and present opportunities for positive recognition. Helping others and getting involved in reinforces being part of the community.

ENCOURAGE GOOD PHYSICAL HEALTH. Good physical health supports good mental health. Healthy eating habits, regular exercise and adequate sleep protect kids against the stress of tough situations. Regular exercise also decreases negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, and depression.

727-518-2268

EDUCATE STAFF, PARENTS & STUDENTS ON SYMPTOMS OF AND HELP FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS. Information helps break down the stigma surrounding mental health and enables adults and students recognize when to seek help. School mental health professionals can provide useful information on symptoms of problems like depression or suicide risk. These can include a change in habits, withdrawal, decreased social and academic functioning, erratic or changed behavior, and increased physical complaints. -National Association of School Psychologists

GREEN LIVING

y setting your home and office heating systems just a few degrees lower, you’ll save a sizable amount of energy. And you’ll make your mother happy by wearing that sweater she gave you last Christmas. Back in the heady green days of Jimmy Carter’s presidency, the former peanut farmer made headlines by turning down the White House thermostat and donning a sweater to stay warm. Still, many of us continue to overheat our homes because we don’t like the idea of sensing a chill, or we just don’t think about putting on another layer. But when the air starts to turn cool, remember that the natural cycle is to get your warmer clothes out of storage and layer up.

Dear EarthTalk: Is it true that palm oil, common in snack foods and health & beauty products, is destroying rainforests? If so, what can consumers do about it? -- Emma Miniscalco, via e-mail

It’s no wonder that worldwide demand for palm oil has surged in recent years. Long used in cosmetics, palm oil is now all the rage in the snack food industry, since it is transfat-free and therefore seen as healthier than the shortening it replaces.

You can save big. Most households shell out 50% to 70% of their energy budgets on heating and cooling, reports the Department of Energy. Yet, for every degree you lower the thermostat, you’ll save between 1 and 3 percent of your heating bill. A light long-sleeved sweater is generally worth about 2 degrees in added warmth, while a heavy sweater adds about 4 degrees. www.thedailygreen.com

largest cause of deforestation in Indonesia and other equatorial countries with dwindling expanses of tropical rainforest. Indonesia’s endangered orangutan population, which depends upon the rainforest, has dwindled by as much as 50 percent in recent years. The clearing of these forests is a big factor in global warming, given how much carbon dioxide (CO2) trees store when left alone. Once forests are cut, tons of CO2 heads skyward where it does the most harm. Also, when not replaced by palm oil plantations, rainforests help maintain water resources by absorbing rainfall and then releasing it into streams and rivers, thus minimizing flooding and soil depletion.

Simply boycotting palm oil and the products containing it may not help, as reduced demand could force the companies behind the plantations to instead initiate more intensive timber harvesting and But to produce palm oil in large enough quantities a widespread conversion of the land to agriculture, to meet growing demand, farmers across Southeast which would add a heavy pollution load onto the Asia have been clearing huge swaths of biodiversityalready compromised land, air and water. It is up rich tropical rainforest to make room for massive to the countries involved in palm oil production palm plantations. Today palm oil production is the to regulate the industry and budget sufficient funds for enforcement. But with huge profits coming in from the sale of palm oil, public officials in Indonesia and elsewhere are loathe to clamp down on their golden goose. Oil palms are confined to the tropics, where their cultivation can also have negative impacts. Among these

Several of the largest palm oil producers have joined forces with banks and nonprofit groups to try to green up the industry. In 2003, some 200 commercial entities in the global palm oil supply chain met and established the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to promote the growth of palm oil in an environmentally friendly manner. RSPO works to develop definitions and criteria for the sustainable production of palm oil, while facilitating the adoption of more green-friendly practices throughout the industry. The group celebrated its first shipment of “sustainable palm oil” to Europe this past November. Despite progress, many green leaders are skeptical that RSPO has the teeth to make a positive impact on the fast-growing palm oil industry. Greenpeace International considers RSPO to be “little more than greenwash,” pointing out that at least one RSPOcertified producer—United Plantations, a supplier to Nestlé and Unilever—is deforesting Indonesia’s vulnerable peat land forests. And Sinar Mas, another major RSPO player, has cleared tropical rainforest all over the country for its palm oil plantations, and is still expanding rapidly. Greenpeace is calling for a moratorium on deforestation throughout Indonesia so that the RSPO and the government can take stock and then proceed accordingly. - CONTACTS: RSPO; Greenpeace.

SLEEP IS NO LONGER AN OPTION Based on the teachings in the book, Going Deeper: How to Make Sense of Your Life When Your Life Makes No Sense

I

freely admit that I don’t like being awakened from a deep sleep. The sound of an alarm clock rubs against my conscious-

ness like a fingernail along a blackboard. Even if I’m being jarred awake by the scream of a fire alarm, a part of me would still rather roll over and block out the noise with an extra pillow. So I can’t pretend to be astonished that so many of us would rather remain sleepwalking than waken to the warning sounds blaring at us these days. Global warming is a prime example. While subcommittees meet and multimedia presentations play to packed rooms, the world suffers irreparable damage. Weather patterns are anomalously freaky: tornadoes where they have never occurred before, dust bowls threatening to decimate the food supply of the world’s most populous country, floods and rogue ocean waves driving hundreds of thousands from their homes. Whichever side of the global warming issue you support, clearly our children’s children won’t be enjoying the same rich and varied ecosystem we inherited from our ancestors. There’s an old adage people invoke when they don’t want to accept an unpleasant tide of events: “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings.” According to several emails I’ve received in the last ten days, the fat lady’s already been on stage for quite some time and she’s about to belt out her last few notes. We’ve been largely oblivious of her entire performance, however – being distracted by Super Bowls and Oscars, Anna Nicole Smith and Angelina Jolie, and how to attract abundance and the perfect mate. Squandering our attention in self-indulgence, we’ve been trading short-term expediency for long-term benefits; we’ve given our pocketbooks sovereignty over our senses – no doubt the very lyrics to the aria the fat lady is now singing. Two weeks ago, a friend drove in from Phoenix to spend the weekend. The conversation at lunch 38 NOVEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

turned to beekeeping, his hobby of many years. He ended the conversation by encouraging me to install a hive in a corner of my property Perhaps providentially, a scant few days later I received a posting from another friend informing me of a sudden, devastating collapse in America’s bee population: “Honeybees are flying off in search of pollen and nectar and simply never returning to their colonies. During the final three months of 2006, a distressing number of honeybee colonies began to diminish from the United States, and beekeepers all over the country have reported unprecedented losses. According to scientists, the domesticated honeybee population has declined by about 50% in the last 50 years. Reports of similar losses to the honeybee population have been documented before in beekeeping literature, but are widely believed to have occurred at this scale previously only at a regional level. With outbreaks recorded as far back as 1896, this is regarded as the first national honeybee epidemic in U.S. history.” Being a bit skeptical, I assumed this was just another piece of alarmist misinformation finding its way onto Internet distribution lists. A few minutes’ research not only confirmed the story, ¹ but made me realize that the problem is rapidly spreading worldwide. In official circles, the condition is called either Fall-Dwindle Disease or, more commonly, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). The plight of an insect may not seem like much, given the kinds of issues grabbing headlines these days. But in fact it’s a big deal. Without an abundance of bees to pollinate crops, the United States could lose as much as 30% of its food supply in a very short time. According to Zac Browning, vice president of the American Beekeeping Federation, “Every third bite we consume in our diet is dependent on a honeybee to pollinate that food.” As with global warming, debate rages about why the bee population has suddenly plummeted. Some blame it on the varroa mite, introduced from Asia,

the widespread practice of spraying wildflowers with herbicides, the practice of monoculture (a single crop covering a large area), or the controversial yet growing use of genetic engineering (GMO) in agriculture; while some fundamentalist diehards are calling it the harbinger of Armageddon. The most persuasive theory of the cause comes from George Carlo, MD, the celebrated author of Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age and current chairman of the nonprofit Science and Public Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. Carlo makes a strong case for the global proliferation of electromagnetic waves (EMF) as the culprit ² responsible for the demise of the bees. I suggest that as long as we overcome our sleepiness enough to hear the sirens reverberating all around us and pay attention to the fat lady’s lyrics, all is not lost. However, the immediate action each of us takes is critical. I have long accepted that the only thing that needs to change in this world is me. I have pledged the rest of my days – however many they might be – to helping others awaken. I have no faith in the ability of government or religion or in any of our vaunted institutions to right our failed course. However, I have infinite faith in the love, wisdom, and power of every individual who lets go of the collective insanity that has brought us to the brink of annihilation and takes responsibility for his or her own life.
