Natural News raises $30,000 to fight GMOs through Institute for Responsible Technology Tucson, AZ (November 17, 2010) In a grassroots fundraising campaign, NaturalNews readers raised over $20,000 for the Institute for Responsible Technology to help combat genetically engineered foods. NaturalNews added to the donation with an additional $10,000. In all, they were able to raise over $30,000 for the support of the IRT and its important work opposing GMOs. "That's $10,000 over our original goal of $20,000" said Mike Adams.

song is marvelous, your dedication to spreading the word about GMOs is keeping a lot of people healthier and happier, and your contribution is already bearing non-GMO fruit. Way to go!"

raydiance Reiki I, II, & III Training Workshops

The no-GMO revolution has just begun! This grassroots movement is gaining strength each day as more people become aware of the dangers of genetically modified foods. People are outraged that in America today; there is no requirement that GMO foods be labeled. That's what Jeffrey Smith and NaturalNews are fighting for: Your right to be informed and to make a free choice about what you want to eat. NaturalNews believes we have a right to know which foods contain GMOs.

Jeffrey Smith, executive director, Institute for Responsible Technology ( http://www.responsibletechnology.org/ ) had this to say to Mike Adams and the NaturalNews readers: "Our target is to convince about 5% of US shoppers to avoid GM brands, which should be enough purchasing clout to force major companies to eliminate GM ingredients altogether... We're looking for volunteer advocates to spark this non-GMO revolution, and the conscious people who read NaturalNews are a terrific source... I also want to shout out to Mike-Your rap

If you haven't yet heard the "Just Say No to GMO " song, which Ronnie Cummins from the Organic Consumers Association calls "the Battle Hymn for our new Organic Republic," you can download the song (for free) at http://www.naturalnews.com/ NoGMO.html Or watch the music video at: http://naturalnews.tv/v.asp?v=B4 59FF2B150FDF4651302A6099 3D9CF3 NaturalNews will continue to work alongside the IRT to publicize their announcements, documentary film clips and other important news items on this issue of GMOs. A C02 laser performs skin resurfacing procedures that eliminate pronounced lines, deep wrinkles. sun/age spots and acne scarring. By targeting deeper layers in the skin, we force stimulation of collagen and healthy skin regeneration. The results can effedively erase years of damage from sun, pollution and free radicals. The latest technological advancement in the field of laser resurfacing is the use of light beams that pulsate or are scattered at a very high rate, thereby minimizing heat damage that the skin might otherwise be exposed to. It also allows a more powerful C02 laser to be utilized for deeper tissue removal. This new technology provides some of the most dramatic, age-defying results possible.

BED BUGS

A

...ARE AN EPIDEMIC

bit of information that you might like to know about. We have friends here in our community and one of their sons is an entomologist (insect expert), and has been telling them that there is an epidemic of bed bugs now occurring in America. Recently we have heard on the news that several stores in NYC have had to close due to bed bug problems, as well as a complete mall in New Jersey. The friends son says that since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. now come from companies outside of America, (sad but true), even the most expensive stores sell foreign clothing from China, Indonesia, etc. The bed bugs are coming in on the clothing as these countries do not consider them a problem. He recommends that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and socks, sheets, towels, etc. that you bring them into the house and

put them in your clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill them and their eggs.

DO NOT PURCHASE CLOTHES AND HANG THEM IN THE CLOSET FIRST. It does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from the most expensive store known in the U.S. They still get shipments from these countries and the bugs can come in a box of scarves or anything else for that matter. That is the reason why so many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut down in NYC and other places. All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or eggs and you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them.

We will help you look and feel great!

Possible Fracture Risk With Osteoporosis Drugs

T

he Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning there is a possible risk of a rare type of thigh bone (femoral) fracture in people who take drugs known as bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis.

"In the interim, it’s important for patients and health care professionals to have all the safety information available when determining the best course of treatment for osteoporosis,” she says.

The agency warned patients and health care professionals of this risk on Oct. 13, 2010, because the rare type of femoral fracture has been predominantly reported in patients taking these prescription medications.

Advice for Consumers: If you are currently taking bisphosphonates for osteoporosis, FDA advises that you

FDA says the possible risk of thigh fracture will be reflected in a labeling change for bisphosphonate medications that treat osteoporosis and in a medication guide that will be required to be given to patients when they pick up their prescription.

* keep taking your medication unless you are told to stop by your health care professional * read the medication guide. It will describe the

Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs that slow or inhibit the loss of bone mass. They have been used successfully since 1995 to prevent and treat osteoporosis and similar diseases. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become weak and are more likely to break. FDA says it is not clear whether bisphosphonates are the cause of the unusual bone breaks known as subtrochanteric femur fractures, which occur just below the hip joint, and diaphyseal femur fractures, which occur in the long part of the thigh. Medication Guide, Labeling Change

The changes to labeling and the medication guide will affect only bisphosphonates approved for osteoporosis. These include * oral bisphosphonates such as Actonel, Actonel with Calcium, Atelvia, Boniva, Fosamax, Fosamax Plus D, and their generic products * injectable bisphosphonates such as Boniva and Reclast and their generic products Labeling and the medication guides for bisphosphonates that are used for other conditions will not change. FDA says the optimal duration of bisphosphonates treatment for osteoporosis is unknown—an uncertainty the agency is highlighting because these fractures may be related to use of bisphosphonates for longer than five years. FDA medical officer Theresa Kehoe, M.D., says the agency continues to evaluate data about the safety and effectiveness of bisphosphonates when used long-term for osteoporosis treatment.

symptoms of an atypical femur fracture. The guide also advises you to notify your health care professional if you develop symptoms * tell your health care professional if you develop new hip or thigh pain (commonly described as dull or aching pain), or have any concerns with your medications * report any side effects with your bisphosphonate medication to FDA's MedWatch program online: www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/ medwatch-online.htm4 by regular mail: Use postage-paid, pre-addressed FDA form 35004, available online at www.accessdata.fda.gov/ scripts/medwatch/5 by Fax: (800) FDA-0178 by phone: (800) FDA-1088 FDA also recommends that health care professionals be aware of the possible risk in patients taking bisphosphonates and consider periodic reevaluation of the need for continued bisphosphonate therapy, particularly for patients who have been on bisphosphonates for longer than five years.

For me there is really nothing more gratifying than to watch an individual come through our doors weighed down by stress, sort of ‘surviving’ life,... ...gradually transform into a fully alive, in control & happy individual.

F

eeling stressed? Feeling depressed? Feeling like your life is spinning out of control? Well…frankly, who isn’t. Given the current state of the world, it seems we are all grappling with negative and discouraging thoughts and emotions. The fact is, this is nothing new. Dealing with the full range of emotional stressors is not new to the human experience. Neither are the methods for overcoming these negative influences. For centuries ancient forms of martial arts have prepared individuals not only for the physical rigors of battle, but true martial arts have always focused as well on developing the untapped powers of the mind. In spite of silly media misrepresentations the legendary Ninja shadow warriors of Japan are regarded as perhaps the most effective warriors of all time. It comes as no surprise to find that their prowess is based, to no small degree, on highly developed sciences of the mind. At Quest Marital Arts in New Tampa, Masters Mark and Helen Russo enjoy witnessing the benefits these ancient technologies of mind, spirit, and body generate for their students. www.tampabaywellness.com

Says Senior Master Mark Sentoshi Russo, “For me there is really nothing more gratifying than to watch an individual who comes through our doors weighed down by stress, sort of ‘surviving’ life, gradually transform into a fully alive, in control and happy individual. They become new people, truly excited by their life experience and newfound sense of wellbeing and control. Life is meant to be lived not just survived.” As students begin to study the Ninja’s physical techniques of self protection they also start learning methods for taking control of their life experience by learning to take control of themselves. This begins with understanding one’s own nature. The Ninja system of life protection is founded upon the fundamental elements of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind. All of life reflects these elemental energies, and so too does human nature. A brief description of these elements expressed through the personality are as follows: Earth – very stable, command and control. Water - inquisitive, fluid, adaptable. Fire – aggressive, as-

"

sertive, committed. Wind – benevolent, evasive, non-confrontational. Students naturally identify which element they relate to best. This begins the process of maximizing strengths and minimizing weaknesses. Ultimately techniques, strategies and principles are customized to individual body types and personalities. This stands in stark contrast to the conventional approach of bigger, stronger, faster and more flexible. Because the art incorporates psychological strategy, as opposed to the more conventional approach the ability to recognize these elemental characteristics in others gives students a huge advantage. For example students are taught how to control an attacker, leading them by their intentions to do harm in a way that maximizes the defenders strengths while minimizing the attackers’ strength. In this way an otherwise less powerful person can easily defeat a bigger, stronger assailant. Perhaps most interesting is that the physical selfdefense techniques serve ultimately as metaphors continued Tampa Bay Wellness • december 2010 13

for living a successful life. Master Mark Russo explains, “As crazy as the world is the chances that any of us will be physically attacked in the next six months are pretty low. However, you can almost bet that before the week is over you will be attacked verbally, emotionally, or psychologically. As students learn to apply these strategies and principles in these scenarios as well, they become naturally more skillful at dealing with life. Soon they learn to direct their energies to produce the results they desire. These people are soon living happier personal lives and successfully building their professional lives. This is why our art is known as ‘the art of winning.’” Because the Ninja martial art developed purely as a means of self protection the physical program

at Quest Martial Arts focuses strictly on realistic self defense, there is no sport or contest training. The techniques involve using the opponents musculoskeletal system against itself. Through clever timing, balance breaking and manipulation the attacker becomes his own worst enemy. The results can be quite devastating, which is comforting should you really be in trouble. Of course safety always comes first. Master Russo explains, “At our school there is no internal competition. The bad guys are out there. Safety comes first. If someone in our community gets injured, we only weaken the good guys. The Ninja families that relied on this art for their very survival could not afford to injure one of their own.” In the end, the goal at Quest Martial Arts is to help individual’s discover, perhaps for the first time, their path to success in all areas of life; what Master Russo terms personal power. “Then”, says Russo, “we ultimately place ourselves in a position to choose peace from a position of power.” l

t present, in the medical field, the biggest achievement of the human being is Western Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Western Medicine is good at treating about 30% of all conditions of humans such as first aid, surgery, prevention of spreading of epidemic diseases, and sustaining life activities; relying upon the accurate check and diagnosis by modern facilities. TCM, however, is good at treating about 70% of all diseases of humans, and other sentient beings such as dogs, cats, birds, etc, as well, who suffer with chronic inflammation, chronic pain, functional imbalances, disorders of the immune system, viral infections, proliferative diseases, degenerative conditions, senile problems, commonly encountered syndromes, sub-health status, vari-

ous chronic and difficult health problems, cancer, and most important, treating and reversing the underlying cause. Sometimes Western Medicine is the best solution for acute conditions. However, for treatment of chronic conditions, most modern people are now preferring green and safe medicine, and this tendency is becoming more and more prominent world wide. Western medicine, which is based upon chemical materials and its side effects, are causing concern, and cannot meet the demands of this new tendency towards natural medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based upon natural plants, and its comprehensive and flexible treatment strategies, which most always brings about fantastic treatment results.

It is based upon herbal treatment, acupuncture, massage and Medical Qigong. Therefore, more and more people in the world are interested in TCM and Medical Qigong (MQ). Please do not confuse Medical Qigong with the exercise programs of qigong. Medical Qigong, which is a large part of TCM, requires five years of college study to achieve the Doctorate level. It is used by Practitioners to treat medical conditions. Qigong means the skill of cultivating vital energy, or the ability to work with the electromagnetic energy of the body. Qigong is a mind-body practice that improves one's mental and physical health by integrating postures, movement, breathing techniques, and focused intention. Medical Qigong therapy is the eldest therapeutic www.tampabaywellness.com

Medical Qigong exercises use physical movement, breathing methods and mental intention to correct and restore the function in the body.

modality of Chinese medicine. It is a comprehensive system of health care addressing the root cause of symptoms, or disease, and treats the client as a whole. The Practitioner, drawing upon their ability to sense and manipulate energy developed through dedicated study and self-cultivation, uses qi emission and/or teaches Medical Qigong prescription exercises and meditations based upon a differential diagnosis rooted in Chinese medical theory to restore health and wellness. Practiced as an excellent adjunct to Western Medicine, TCM may successfully treat conditions which Western Medicine finds resistant or ambiguous. Disruptions in the electromagnetic energy of the body occur throughout our lifetime as a result of poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, injuries, surgery, suppression of emotions and aging. The goal of Medical Qigong is to correct these bio-energetic imbalances and blockages. This enables the body to strengthen and regulate the internal organs, and the nervous and immune system, relieve pain, regulate hormones, and strengthen and release deep-seated emotions and stress. Medical Qigong therapy consists of treatment by a Practitioner to regulate the client's qi. After the treatment, the client will be given qigong prescriptions to assist in their ongoing healing. Tailored specifically to the client,

Medical Qigong is a complete system of health care that recognizes the root causes of symptoms or disease, and treats the client as a whole. In China, and more recently in the United States, doctors have applied Medical Qigong in hospitals and clinics to treat individuals suffering from a variety of ailments. Medical Qigong therapy and prescriptions can be used to treat people with cancer and help reduce or eliminate side effects from radiation and chemotherapy. It will help in treating cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease and post-stroke syndrome. It is especially useful in treating any kind of chronic pain, and chronic disorders of the digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems. Like any other system of health care, Medical Qigong is not a panacea, but a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Medical Qigong as an important form of complementary and alternative medicine. The Sentient Temple Healing Center and College of Alternative Medicine practices Medical Qigong, and are world famous for their Oncology program. See our web site at www.MedicalQigongFlorida.com, and be safe and be well. Dr. Rev. Dennis Alexander, PhD, DMQ (China) is the founder of the Sentient Temple College of Alternative Medicine and the National College of Medical Qigong. He is the former Florida Director of the International Institute of Medical Qigong. Dennis received his Doctor of Medical Qigong (DMQ) from the International Institute of Medical Qigong in Palm Desert California and is also registered at the Overseas College of Medical Qigong, Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, China. THE TOP TEN INGREDiENTS TO AVOID

Holistic Practitioner, Nutritionist, Fitness Expert, Weight Loss Coach, Author

T

he majority of processed foods contain ingredients that are harmful and cause an abundance of adverse health conditions and complaints. If you include packaged foods in your diet, get in the habit of reading the label, more specifically, the list of ingredients. Become familiar and be aware of these ingredients:

1. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP: HFCS is the number one

source of calories for most Americans and causes obesity. Aside from causing you to gain weight, HFCS has been linked to other health problems.

• A study by the University of Minnesota found that fructose "produced significantly higher [blood] levels" of triglycerides in men than did glucose. • A study by the USDA, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, found that fructose may alter the body's balance of magnesium, leading to increased bone loss. • Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles found that pancreatic cancer cells use fructose to divide and multiply. It's basically a superfood for cancer cells. HFCS is extremely toxic to your liver, increases inflammation and oxidative stress, and creates an aggressive insulin response, thus contributing to type II diabetes. Consumption of HFCS is linked to an increased risk of hypertension. In addition, there are high levels of mercury in food products sweetened with toxic HFCS. You’ll find high-fructose corn syrup in processed foods, fruit drinks, fast food, sodas, syrup that goes into

your Latte from Starbucks, gum, baked goods, and in many other foods you’d never even imagine.

2. PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED OILS (TRANS FATS): Partially hydrogenated oils are found in thousands of processed foods (breakfast cereals, cookies, chips, all CRAP food). Trans fats are proven to cause heart disease and contribute to obesity. Restaurant food, especially from fast food chains, often serve food loaded with trans fats. Consequences of a diet high in trans fats include: • Inflammation • Immune function • Testosterone • Arthritis • Cancer • Decreased IQ – learning disabilities. American IQs have dropped 20 points in the past 20 years. • Diabetes • Elevated blood pressure • Free radical production • Heart Disease • Interferes with neurological & visual development of fetus • Liver damage • Obesity • Osteoporosis • Type II diabetes

3. MSG: MSG

-- Monosodium glutamate is a chemical (an excitotoxin) that has been associated with reproductive disorders, migraine headaches, permanent damage to the endocrine system leading to obesity and other serious disorders. It is linked to reduced fertility. MSG is used in many foods as a taste enhancer.

4. SODIUM NITRATE: This is

a preservative, coloring, and flavoring commonly added to bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, smoked fish and corned beef. Studies have linked eating it to various types of cancer.

5. REFINED SOY: When it comes 9. FOOD COLORINGS: to soy, much of what we read and hear about comes from the people who market it. Before you mix up a soy shake, snack on a soy protein bar or pour yourself a glass of soy milk consider this: unfermented, processed soy inhibits the thyroid, is deficient in amino acids, is toxic to infants and shrinks the brain.

There are some redeeming qualities to soy, however these are found primarily in fermented soy products like tempeh, miso, natto and soybean sprouts. If you want to get some health benefits from soy, stick to these four forms and pass on ALL processed soy milks, tofu, soy burgers, soy ice cream, soy cheese and other soy junk foods that are disguised as health foods.

6. WHITE SUGAR: Sugar is more

addictive than cocaine! Sugar has a profound influence on your brain function and your psychological function. When you consume excess amounts of sugar, your body releases excess amounts of insulin, which in turn causes a drop in your blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia. In addition, sugar is pro-flammatory damages skin collagen and promotes wrinkles, increases your appetite, depletes your body of B vitamins, causes joint degeneration, ADHD and other behavior disorders, stimulates cholesterol synthesis and weight gain. Opt for a healthier alternative such as stevia.

7. SODIUM CHLORIDE: Commercial table salt is highly processed and full of aluminum, chemicals and additives which are toxic. Opt for a healthier version such as Bragg’s amino acids, Himalayan salt or unprocessed Celtic sea salt (light pink, grey or beige color).

8. ASPARTAME, SPLENDA, SWEET ‘N LOW, EQUAL:

Aspartame is an artificial, chemical sweetener found in many foods and beverages including desserts, gelatins, protein powder, low calorie foods, drink mixes and sodas. It may cause cancer or neurological problems, such as dizziness, migraine headaches, weight gain, increased appetite, bloating, rashes or hallucinations. Aspartame poisoning mimics symptoms of MS. NutraSweet is in over 7,000 foods! Side effects: • Heart disease • Bloating and edema • Brain seizures • Cancer • Cravings • Headaches • Predispose you to Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease • Rashes and hives • Weight gain – results in obesity

in childhood such as allergies, asthma, anemia, reoccurring infections, a constant upset stomach or milk intolerance.

There are food colorings still on the market linked to cancer in animal testing. There is evidence that food coloring and food additives contribute to behavioral problems in children, lead to lower IQ, hyperactivity, ADHD, depression, hormonal dysfunction, migraines and cancer.

Other symptoms are nasal and throat mucous, feeling of food sitting in stomach, bloating, gas, diarrhea with periodic constipation, mental fogginess and skin rashes. In severe cases, as with Celiac disease, there can be seizures, psychosis, violent behavior and withdrawal from self.

Red 40 is found in soda pop, candy, gelatin desserts, pastries, pet food and sausage. It is linked to hyperactivity disorders and migraines.

It’s important to form a habit of reading the list of ingredients on ALL products! Focus on eating whole, fresh foods. This is the best way to stay away from toxic, harmful ingredients. Choose to shop at your local Farmer’s Markets, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Everything with a Trader Joe's label sold at the supermarket and all products at Whole Foods are free of the controversial chemicals.

Red 3 is used to dye cherries and found in fruit cocktail, ice cream candy and baked goods. It has been shown to cause thyroid tumors in rats. This harmful artificial color causes cancer and changes in brain chemistry. Read the list of ingredients in your child’s cough syrup (artificial color). Green 3 is a potential allergen and has been linked to bladder cancer. Green 3 is added to candy, mint jelly, cereals and beverages. Blue 1 and 2 are found in beverages, candy, baked goods, cereals and pet food have been linked to allergies and cancer. Yellow 5 is the most notable artificial color because it causes the most immediate allergic reaction in people sensitive to salicylates such as aspirin.

Visit Paula at www.PaulaOwens.com

Yellow 6 has been linked to tumors of the adrenal gland and kidney. Yellow 6 is added to beverages, sausage, gelatin, baked goods and candy. Take home message – Stay away from any product listing an ingredient with a color plus a number.

10. PROCESSED/REFINED WHEAT AND GLUTEN: Refined grains are void of nutrients, disrupt insulin levels and are highly allergenic for many individuals. Wheat and gluten have adverse health effects for approximately 80% of the population. Gluten is a protein found combined with starch in the endosperm of grains, notably wheat, rye and barley. Gluten intolerance/sensitivity is severely misdiagnosed or under-diagnosed – one estimate says that 97% of all sufferers don’t know they have the disease due to unfamiliarity with it among U.S. physicians.

Eliminate gluten products for 3-4 weeks and tell me how great you feel. Signs and symptoms of gluten intolerance: The ultimate effect of this hidden wear and tear is the slow destruction of the healthy mucosa, or lining tissue of the small intestine causing an autoimmune response that’s similar to an allergic reaction. In some cases there may be symptoms Tampa Bay Wellness • december 2010 19

Are We Putting Our Dogs and Cats in Jeopardy

he advent of easy to use spot-on products has made flea and tick prevention easy for many pet owners. Importantly, certain ticks carry dangerous diseases so we’ve all become extra careful with our prevention routine. Floridians need to use these products more than those who live in more northerly climates because we need to apply them all year round. Dogs and cats in Florida never get a breather from what are now being considered risky and potentially dangerous ingredients.

As a veterinarian, I’ve been taught that the majority of these products are harmless and safe but evidence now shows that both the ‘active’ and some ‘inactive’ ingredients in the spot- on preparations have been linked to serious health effects both in the laboratory animals and pets.

found to increase cholesterol levels in dogs, cause thyroid lesions, create liver toxicity and has the potential for damaging the liver, kidney, thyroid, heart, lungs, spleen, adrenal, brain, and gonads. As a neurotoxin it has caused incoordination along with labored breathing and muscle weakness. When this drug was tested after it's introduction in 1994 researchers found an increase in frequency of birth defects when it was tested on rats, mice and dogs. In the Journal of Pesticide Reform, author Caroline Cox exposes thyroid lesions as a result of exposure to imidacloprid.

As a result of all this newly revealed information in the CPI's report the EPA in April 2009 announced it was taking a closer look at all spot-on flea and tick products. The EPA is also taking action to address uncertainties about the so-called 'inert' ingredients present in these products.

The Washington-based Center for Public Integrity (CPI), a non-profit investigative news organization and the National Resources Defense Council- an environmental advocacy group- have both published reports about the safety of both prescription and over-the-counter flea and tick treatments. Dr. Dobozy of the EPA’s Pesticide Division has found that the active ingredient (fipronil) in Frontine remains in a pet’s system with the potential for nervous system and thyroid toxicity. Laboratory animals got thyroid cancer and altered thyroid hormones, liver and kidney toxicity, reduced fertility and convolutions. The companies web site creates the impression that the product stays in the oil glands of the skin. But Dr. Dobozy’s study showed that, in fact, it does enter the body and the organ systems. Advantage contains the active ingredient Imidacloprid. In laboratory studies Imidacoprid has been

without pyrethroids. The pyrethroid spot-ons also accounted for more than half of the "major" pesticide pet reactions including brain damage, heart attacks and seizures. Non-pyrethroid spot-on treatments accounted for about 6 % of all major incidents. Bio Spot Flea and Tick Control, Defend EXspot Treatment and Zodiac FleaTrol Spot On all contain either or both of the active ingredients Permethrin and/or Pyriproxyfen. Permethrin has been implicated as a carcinogenic insecticide causing lung cancer and liver tumors in laboratory animals. There is also a suspicion that it disrupts endocrine function. It can act as a neurotoxin, causing tremors and also increased aggressive behavior and learning problems

Most people think that the pyrethrins (naturally occurring compounds from the chrysanthemum plant) and pyrethroids (the synthetic counterpart) are less hazardous than other tick and flea preventive ingredients. CPI collected data just recently made public through the Freedom of Information Act and analyzed the real data about the pyrethroid-based insecticides that are manufactured for pet, human and environmental use. According to CPI, from 2002 through 2007, at least 1,600 pet deaths related to spot-on treatments with the above-mentioned ingredients were reported to the EPA. That was nearly double the reported fatalities linked to flea treatments

Safe alternatives are very much needed for flea and tick control. Many of the diseases that have become common in our dogs and cats could potentially be linked to these previously "believed to be innocuous" spot-on products. A safe alternative for flea and tick prevention is Ticked Off . The ingredients and usage recommendations can be found on the site www.deservingpets.com It works relatively well in Forida but it needs some contact with the pest and if you have several large dogs that requires a whole lot of spraying. A recent study showed that bladder cancer in Scotties was linked to lawn chemicals. The bottom line is that with our pets exposed to so many toxins we need to provide them with the tools they need to flush them from the body. Studies showed that kale cleans up

www.tampabaywellness.com

after the party, dumping carcinogens and toxins out of the cells at least six times faster. Kale and broccoli are considered super-foods for they have special phytochemicals that help prevent disease. Phytochemicals are compounds found in plants and nature that help prevent or eliminate disease. John Hopkins Medical School discovered the first phytochemical in kale in 1992. Since then hundreds have been discovered. Health oriented magazines repeatedly tell us that if we eat more colored fruits and vegetables our own cancer risk is cut by 30%. A sad but true fact is that cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs over two years of age. This sage advice about phytochemicals in colored fruits and vegetables and their cancer preventing qualities for humans applies equally well for our dogs and cats. That’s because it all comes down to the cell and how well it can repair itself. Somehow we’ve expected our dogs and cats to stay healthy on highly processed, heated and compressed prepared pet foods. These foods don’t have the tools our pets need to cope with the toxic environment they live in. If your Maytag Man doesn’t have his tools he won’t be able to fix your washing machine. Just so, without the needed tools, our pets don’t have what they desperately need to stay healthy. Every pet, and particularly the dogs and cats in the warmer climates, need a complete and balanced supplement with vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals to help them stay healthier and live longer. Adding lightly steamed vegetables to your pet’s meal every day will help the cells stay healthy. A good multivitamin also gives needed tools for your dog and cat to stay healthy.

Deserving Pets created Vital Vities with this in mind. Specially chosen super-foods and phytochemicals combine with generous doses of vitamins to fill in those dangerous gaps in our pet’s nutrition. Pure extract of alfalfa juice, broccoli, beets, carrots, apples, pumpkin seeds, kale, dandelion and parsley work to flush the cells of toxins. Milk thistle cleans the liver every day. Grape seed extract acts as a powerful antioxidant. Vitamins and minerals get grabbed up by cells in order to do their repair work, lasting just a few hours. Super-foods last for a few days. They all work together to promote health. All the ingredients in Deserving Pets Vital Vities go through a cutting edge process that masks all the vegetable and vitamin tastes and then flavor blasts it so both dogs and cats love getting the vitamin in their meals. No other vitamin does this. In fact, most people see visible results in their pets within just a few weeks so imagine all the healthy stuff that’s going on inside! Nature’s Food Patch in Clearwater carries Deserving Pets Vital Vities and you can also get them online at www.deservingpets.com . You can also click Retail Partners on the site and find local places to buy them. For the cost of an inexpensive dinner for two you can have your pet on these vitamins for two months. Yoga Pose Utkatasana (chair pose) Utkatasana (Oot-Kah-Tahs-anna) Utka = fierce, powerful Asana = posture

s we move through the end of fall and into winter, the Vata tendencies begin to peak, creating imbalance in our physical and mental well being. Vata is a term used in the studies of Ayurveda (the health science of yoga) that refers to one aspect of the human condition that correlates with the elements of air and space. When Vata is out of balance, the tendency toward movement and instability can result in poor digestion, insomnia, and inability to focus. Yoga postures that encourage stability and a grounding connection to the earth help to balance out the Vata condition. The cool/dry quality of the fall/winter weather (mirroring the Vata condition) requires us to choose balancing and harmonizing qualities in our yoga practice. So, as the seasons change, so should your yoga practice.

Benefits • Emphasizes warmth and grounding (fire and earth) • Creates strength and stability in the back, legs and abdomen • Strengthens the supporting muscles of all the major joints in the body • Massages the abdominal organs and builds digestive fire Start in mountain pose. Stand straight, with the spine lengthened, shoulders open, feet firmly grounded to the earth. Notice the breath, inhale, and on the exhale bend the knees, lowering the hips and extending the arms straight forward as if you were lowering your hips down toward a chair. Inhale and exhale as you lower the seat a little more, extending the arms upward, continuing the line of the back. The feet create a solid connection with the floor and the earth beneath you. Yet, the toes are light, not gripping. With the arms fully extended, retain the integrity of the pose by drawing the shoulder blades down and away from the ears. Draw the pelvic floor upward. Hold the pose as heat begins to build in the body. Relax the jaw, bringing softness into the expression of the face. Notice the thoughts

that arise, and try to observe rather than react to the tendency to move out of the pose. Find a balance between engagement and relaxation, creating structure and strength and then finding ease within that structure. Use the breath to open and relax the body. This is not a passive posture; it requires focus, stamina, and strength. The back is angled forward, yet retains a straight line of extension that honors the alignment of the spine. Utkatasana reminds us to find stability and focus in our lives while accepting the strength and stamina that is required to do so. Care should be taken with conditions of the knees. Milder variations can include lying on the floor with the feet against the wall. A block between the knees will keep the knees aligned with the hips. Moving gracefully into the winter season (even though mild in Florida) requires conscious adaptations to our daily activities. Keeping the body warm, engaged and stable through the practice of yoga is supportive of the ease and balance that we all hope to embrace in our lives. Dr. Carla Goddard, visionary of the group shared, “We, as humans, approach the world around us as being a form of duality. This perception causes us to judge others on their journeys for not fitting into our own perceptions of reality. We struggle in an internal tug of war with this duality which results inprojecting a tumultuous energy being projected into the world around us. “In truth, we are all extensions of one another. This community base is being created and birthed to integrate all perceptions without automatically perceiving an opposite. Each member of the community brings with them a gift to share. Each member of the community has something to teach and something they can learn. It is together as a united community that we create the changes. This

ers say, as a global humanity we are facing challenges in everyregion and every facet of life. The Mother Earth is demanding our attention; individuals are hurting and facing economic challenges, and spiritual evolution is evolving. Each of us face these trials and pebbles in varying ways, yet, each requiring the same basic elements, support, nurturing, and love. The ‘mantra’of the group seems to be alone we are separated. Together we are unified. As Dr. Goddard stated, “they are just ordinary people creating an extraordinary community”. Dr. Carla Goddard is a Shaman Medicine Woman who lives in Crystal Springs, Florida. She stated that currently there are people coming from as far away as Orlando, Pinellas Park, Winter Haven, Hillsborough County, Hernado County and all across Pasco County to give birth to this community focus group.
