Letter FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers,

W

elcome to our December issue of Tampa Bay Wellness Magazine. I hope that you might take this month to consider “the gift of health.” At this point in my life I view health as something over which I have some but not total control. I know that there are many things I can do to prevent ill health of my body and mind. I can choose foods that nourish my body and mind. I can make certain that I allow for ample time to relax and enjoy social support. I can schedule periodic bouts of exercise throughout my day. I can also get a good night’s sleep as often as possible. There are other things, too. My interview with Dean Ornish, MD this month helped me learn more tips in that regard. Please take a few moments to read it and consider his words of wisdom. Despite my efforts to practice daily preventative healthcare, however, PUBLIS H E D

I know that things may happen beyond my control. A business appointment or lunch with a friend may land me in a place that exposes me to environmental chemicals or toxins. Someone on the road may lose control of their car and injure me. These are just a few examples.

Achieve Greater

Reproductive Health with Acupuncture

According to the American Society of Reproductive Health, acupuncture has a positive impact on both women’s and men’s fertility, regulating menstrual cycles and improving both ovarian function and sperm quality. Through the effectiveness of increasing endorphin production and decreasing stress hormones, acupuncture can also assist patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Natalie Maddox,

DOM, AP, owner of

Palm Wellness Center, is focused on reproductive health and assists couples with both fertility and gynecological issues using Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

This is why I now view health as something over which I have some but not total control. I feel empowered by my positive health choices since each proactive, pro-life choice is a gift I give to myself. These are the best gifts in life: choices that create health and are not dependent on anyone else.

wellness news NEW FINDING SUGGESTS PROSTATE BIOPSY IS NOT ALWAYS NECESSARY Researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the University of WisconsinMadison have discovered that some elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in men may be caused by a hormone normally occurring in the body, and are not necessarily a predictor of the need for a prostate biopsy.

Raising ‘Good’ Cholesterol Levels May Benefit Clogged Arteries A drug that raises levels of ‘good’ cholesterol, when taken in addition to standard statin therapy to lower ‘bad’ cholesterol, can reduce the furring up of arteries in patients with established heart disease, an Oxford University study has shown. The findings are published in a recent issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Heart disease is still the biggest killer in the Western world, and atherosclerosis -- the ‘furring up’ or hardening of arteries -- is closely linked to later heart attacks and strokes. The standard treatment for patients with atherosclerosis is to be prescribed statins. These drugs are effective in reducing the risk of heart attacks and stroke and work by lowering levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which might otherwise get deposited in the arteries.

Elevated levels of PSA have traditionally been seen as a potential sign of prostate cancer, leading to the widespread use of PSA testing. However, the researchers found that parathyroid hormone, a substance the body produces to regulate calcium in the blood, can elevate prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in healthy men who do not have prostate cancer. These “non-cancer” elevations in PSA could cause many men to be biopsied unnecessarily, which often leads to unnecessary treatment.

“PSA picks up any prostate activity, not just cancer,” said lead investigator Gary G. Schwartz, Ph.D., M.P.H., an associate professor of cancer biology and epidemiology and prevention at the School of Medicine. “Inflammation and other factors can elevate PSA levels. If the levels are elevated, the man is usually sent for a biopsy. The problem is that, as men age, they often develop microscopic cancers in the prostate that are clinically insignificant. If it weren’t for the biopsy, these clinically insignificant cancers, which would never develop into fatal prostate cancer, would never be seen.” High rates of prostate biopsy, therefore, lead to the over treatment of prostate cancer, and an increased rate of the side effects of treatment, including impotence and urinary incontinence. - Newswise

NOISE HURTS MEN’S HEARING MORE, STUDY SHOWS

N

ew research suggests that men -- especially married white men -- are much more likely to develop noiseinduced hearing loss than women. But there’s some good news: Another study finds that older men who take high doses of folate can decrease their risk of hearing loss by 20 percent. The figures regarding hearing loss in men and women come from a study of hearing-test data from 5,290 people aged 20 to 69. An estimated 13 percent of them will suffer from noise-induced hearing loss, which researchers think affects about 24 million Americans. The condition, caused by exposure to loud noise, is preventable. Among the subjects, men were two-and-a-half times more likely than women to develop this type of hearing loss. Married, non-Hispanic white men had the highest risk, the study authors pointed out.

In another study, researchers found that increased doses of antioxidant vitamins don’t improve a man’s chances of avoiding hearing loss. But folate -- a type of vitamin B -reduced the risk by 20 percent in men older than 60. Foods with high levels of folate include leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and asparagus; dried or fresh beans; peas; liver products; and fortified cereal products. The researchers pointed out that their study is the largest to look into links between diet and hearing loss. The findings of both studies were presented at the American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery Foundation annual meeting, held Oct. 4 to 7 in San Diego, California. - SOURCE: American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, news release, Oct. 5, 2009 HealthDay

‘Good’ cholesterol, or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, is thought to help remove bad cholesterol from the arteries, and high levels of good cholesterol are associated with lower risk of heart disease. It has been thought that patients with low levels of good cholesterol might additionally benefit from treatments to raise these levels, but until now there has been little evidence to back this up. Nicotinic acid, sometimes known as niacin, is one of the oldest drugs used for atherosclerosis and only fell out of favour as statins came to prominence. It is known to raise levels of good cholesterol in the blood. -Science Daily 10 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

TOP SERIOUS HEALTH CONCERNS FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

T

he top serious health concerns for African Americans are: • Cardiovascular Disease—The #1 killer of African Americans. • Diabetes—3.2 million African Americans have diabetes, yet more than 33% do not know it. • Vitamin D Deficiency—Low Vitamin D has been associated with several types of cancer as well as certain autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus. • HIV/AIDS—Nearly half of the people who get HIV/AIDS are African American, suffering more deaths than any other race. • Cancer—Lung, Breast, Colon, Prostate—African American men are 35% more likely to die from prostate or colon cancer than Caucasian men and African American women are 18% more likely to die from breast cancer because of a genetic predisposition to aggressive forms of cancer. “This is a national tragedy,” says Dr. Reginald S. Fowler, a member of the MDVIP nationwide network of doctors specializing in preventive and personalized healthcare. “The good news is that the risk of early death among African Ameri-

cans can be reduced with a comprehensive annual physical examination, nutritional counseling, as well as, talking and listening to patients Dr. Fowler says, “One major aspect to preventing as well as controlling many diseases is nutrition. Eating more fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts such as walnuts and almonds, and less red meat can help to decrease the incidence of many diseases. And don’t forget exercise.” He also believes that many diseases can be diagnosed earlier or avoided altogether by a complete annual physical and carefully listening to patients. A sign hangs in his exam rooms for patients to see that says, Talk to Me. “It is critical to have an open relationship with your doctor in addition to a comprehensive annual physical examination,” he advises. “To create the perfect wellness plan for a patient, it is important to talk about everything, and I mean everything. The information that is garnered through conversation is crucial to maintaining your health.” - Black Health Magazine

Chronic Voluntary Alcohol Consumption Impairs Neurogenesis

A

new study found that chronic alcohol consumption reduces the number of new brain cells that form in the hippocampus of adolescent rhesus monkeys. This finding suggests these cells are vulnerable to alcohol and their presence may be essential for preventing alcohol dependence. The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2009, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the world’s largest source of emerging news about brain science and health. “We’ve found a potential mechanism for alcohol’s harmful effects on the hippocampus and other brain regions associated with executive function and memory,” said Chitra Mandyam, PhD, of the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego and lead author of the study. “This may lead to more effective medications for helping alcoholics overcome their addiction.” www.tampabaywellness.com

In this study, male rhesus monkeys (aged four to five years early in the study and five to six years at the end) were allowed to voluntarily consume a Tang-sweetened solution containing 6 percent alcohol during one-hour sessions, Monday through Friday. A control group of monkeys had similar access to alcohol-free Tang. The alcohol group consumed an average of 1.78 g/kg of alcohol per session.

YOGA & BACK PAIN RELIEF

G

ood News! There is a healthy alternative approach to relieving pain and suffering coming this February 12th and 13th. There is a certain level of desperation that takes hold after long periods of mind-numbing back pain, amidst the relentless search for diagnosis, relief and cure. Back pain grips the psyche of normally healthy, active people and eventually dominates their every move, physically and emotionally. Conscious individuals today are yearning for a holistic approach to this phenomenon, yet have very limited resources to pursue. A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health suggests that yoga may help relieve chronic back pain (including the depression associated with it)...and deserves recognition as an alternative to conventional medicine.

IN RESPONSE TO THIS NEED FOR PAIN RELIEF: John Gianoli, MD and Val Spies (RYT500 Yoga Instructor) have designed a workshop that combines the knowledge and experience of western medicine with the healing physical and emotional aspects of yoga. THIS WORKSHOP INCLUDES: • An overview of common back pain scenarios • Dispelling Back Myths • Identifying every day unhealthy and damaging movements • The mind/body connection • “The Pain Identity” and its psychological impact • Meditations for prioritizing comfort and pain • Designing a series of yoga postures for your personal condition

After five months the primates’ brain tissue was analyzed, with careful attention to sections containing the hippocampus for signs of neurogenesis. The researchers found that chronic alcohol consumption significantly altered neurogenesis in the region of the hippocampus that produces self-renewing neural stem cells. “Our results demonstrate that in addition to causing existing cells to degenerate, excessive alcohol keeps new stem cells from forming,” Mandyam said. Q:

What’s your Center of Gravity?

A:

There are many choices in healthcare. As a new doctor in the mid 90’s people would come to my chiropractic clinic and say “I don’t know if I need an adjustment. It feels like a muscle.” As an Applied Kinesiologist that was interesting to me. People would get therapies elsewhere, come into my office and say: “It was the rolfer that helped me the most,” or the acupuncturist, or the physical therapist’s ultrasound, or the podiatrist’s orthotics. Other things they said: “My massage therapist is the greatest,” or “My yoga instructor was the one who helped me with my back, my pilates teacher is the best ever, or my personal trainer saved my life.” All of this was very interesting to me, and that is why we came up with structural management. Structural management is a system that utilizes all disciplines and creates a tangible approach to structural medicine. It represents a good combination of western ideas and eastern thought. We have finally figured out that muscles are fired by the brain (a very large component of the nervous system) and attach to tendons, which attach to harder structures called bones. Bones attach to each other through ligaments. Wow: Everything is connected; it really is true. So, now when people ask me, “Is it a bone or a muscle?” The answer is yes and yes. In my structural management program, you can see an initial exam online. We start with the structural fingerprint exam. Then, we scan the bottom of your

Things you aren’t aware of that are contributing to your chief complaint come to light and you can begin to choose portions of all of the above mentioned modalities to help minimize stress on your kinetic chain, which is how muscles talk to each other to create joints to move; in essence they create life, which is movement. To create a better center of gravity is to facilitate a better structural health, which minimizes stress on all of your joints. So, who does this help? Well, everyone on some level. Then, you can decide how you want to add greater health to your life. Maybe you have a practitioner who is a little stuck (and no I am not referring to just acupuncturists). Learning your center of gravity is a great way to put modalities together and possibly even begin a movement program that would give you a greater systemic strength, balance, and happiness. If I missed any practicing modalities, I do apologize, my friends. The homeopath, herbalist, and nutritionist are just too long to list. But who wins? Which modality represents the essence of connecting them all? My opinion would be the neurologists. Unfortunately for the mainstream neurologists their brothers, cousins, and sisters are energy medicine, cranial sacral, emdr, chiropractors, and the center of gravity testing that shows the interconnection in a tangible approach, and can be improved upon with effort. Also, the patient has to be active in any health program. This is participatory healthcare. Stay moving, get adjusted,

HEALTH How to Give Yourself the Gift of

AN INTER VIEW W I T H D E A N O R N I S H , M D

Q: We know that in the last few decades obesity has increased exponentially both at home and abroad. Why do you think this is the case?

Dean Ornish, MD 14 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

A: In simple terms, we are eating more and exercising less. We’re eating more quantity of food, and we are eating foods that tend to promote weight gain. People tend to gain weight when they eat too much fat because fat is so dense in calories. Fat has nine calories per gram; whereas protein and carbohydrates have only four. You can get a lot of calories very easily when you eat a lot of fat. It doesn’t matter what type of fat. Some fats are healthier for you than others when it comes to your cardiovascular status or breast cancer or prostate cancer, but from the standpoint of obesity a calorie is a calorie.

The other reason is that people eat too many simple carbs—refined carbohydrates like sugar, white flour, and white rice. And when you eat a lot of simple carbs, you get a double-whammy. You remove the fiber in the bran when you go from whole wheat flour to white flower or from brown rice to white rice. That’s what normally fills you up before you get too many calories…So you get all of these calories that don’t fill you up. In addition, they get absorbed very quickly because the fiber and the bran not only fill you up, but they slow the absorption of food. So when you have refined carbohydrates, they get absorbed very quickly because your blood sugar does spike, your pancreas makes insulin to bring your blood sugar back down which is good, but the insulin also accelerates the conversion of calories into fat. www.tampabaywellness.com

The American diet—and now unfortunately the world’s diet—has become so much higher in fat, so much larger in portion sizes, and so much higher in refined carbohydrates at the same time that exercise levels have been diminishing. People don’t need to get up and bring in the crops, so they don’t have to exercise as much. Manual labor is much greatly reduced. Even physical education in schools is not mandatory except in a couple of states. There is a growing awareness that this may be the first generation in which our children live a shorter lifespan than their parents because of the obesity epidemic. There is also a growing realization that there is a globalization of chronic disease that’s occurring around the world. Not only obesity but heart disease, diabetes, prostrate cancer, and breast cancer are pandemic in most countries in the world. It’s only happened in the last 20 years ago, and so we’re on the steep part of the curve and there is an opportunity to do preventative medicine on a global scale.

Q: What would you to say someone who doesn’t believe that he or she can truly do much to prevent heart disease? There are people like that and say, “Well you can do all the right things: Eat right, exercise, and still get sick and die. So, why should I bother?” A: Our bodies are much more dynamic than most people realize. There have been two major studies that have looked at this question: One called the Interheart study that looked at 30,000 men and women on all six continents. They found that seven factors, all of which are directly influenced by changes in diet and lifestyle, can prevent heart disease in 90 to 95 percent of men and women. That’s almost everybody. There was also a more recent study called the Epic study. The Epic found the same kinds of things. And in our studies, we found that when you change your lifestyle it actually changes your genes. We were able to show for the first time that over 500 genes were changed in just three months; and in fact, turning on the disease preventing genes and turning off the genes that promote

heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other illnesses. The point is that our bodies are much more dynamic than most people realize. When we make changes we can dramatically reduce our risk of the most common diseases. And it’s not like there’s one diet and lifestyle program for heart disease, and a different one for diabetes, and a different one for breast cancer. It’s the same program. It’s just a question of the degree to which you want to make these changes. We also found what’s sustainable is pleasure, joy, and freedom. When we talk about prevention or risk factor reduction, most peoples’ eyes glaze over. They just think that’s boring. But when you make these changes, you feel so much better so quickly, it reframes the reasons from making them from fear of dying—which is too scary—or prevention— which is too boring—to joy of living, which is sustainable. Your brain gets more blood in just a week or two. You think more clearly. You have more energy. Your brain can grow so many new brain cells in three months that

Recently, Medicare agreed to provide coverage for this program, the first time that Medicare has covered a program of comprehensive lifestyle changes. He directed the first randomized controlled trial demon-

strating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer. His current research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” diseasepreventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as lengthening telomeres, the ends of chromosomes that control how long we live. your brain can get measurably bigger. Most people are amazed to hear that. Your skin gets more blood, so you don’t age as quickly. Your heart gets more blood. You can reverse heart disease. Your sexual organs get more blood, so you can have greater sexual function. And so for many people these are choices that are worth making not to live longer but to feel better.

Q: If someone reads this article and decides to make changes but feels overwhelmed about doing a lot at once in terms of changing their diet, starting to exercise, and nurturing relationships, do you have a recommendation for that? A: Yes. My newest book is called The Spectrum. I wrote the book to answer that question. We have been doing this work for

more than 30 years, and we have learned what really enables people to make and maintain sustainable changes in their diet and lifestyle. Part of what we’ve learned in all of our studies is that the more you change the better you feel and the better you get. It didn’t matter what we looked at…The more people changed, the better they got.

free and in control, and soon as they can’t have something they want it. It goes all the way back to “Don’t eat the apple,” which didn’t work very well. What we tell people is that there are no good foods or bad foods. Once you label foods as being good or bad, it’s a small step to thinking of yourself as a good or bad person if you eat them.

That’s a very hopeful and empowering message. It’s saying: If you are willing to make these changes, to the degree that you do you are going to feel better, look better, lose weight, gain health—all the good things that you are looking to do.

And once you’re bad person you might as well just finish the pint of ice cream, right? So we say there are no good foods or bad foods, but some foods are healthier for you than others. We’ve categorized them from the most healthy—group one—to the least healthy— group five—and groups two through four are intermediate. Find out where you are eating most of the time, and to the degree you move toward the healthier end of the spectrum you’re going to have a corresponding benefit. How much you move and how quickly are really

In the book it describes the Spectrum approach. If you’re on a diet, a diet is all about what you can’t have and what you must do, and that’s not sustainable because even more than being healthy most people want to feel

“Many people have a hard time believing that these simple choices we make in our lives each day—like what we eat, and how we respond to stress, and how much exercise we get, and how much love and intimacy we have in our lives— that these simple choices can make a powerful difference, but they often do.” 16 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

a function of what you want to do: how much you’re trying to accomplish and what you feel comfortable with. There is also a spectrum for exercise, stress management, and love and intimacy. The more you move toward the healthy end of each of those spectrums and the more of these things that you change at the same time, the better you feel and the better you become. Q: Is there anything that all Americans should eliminate from their diet now? A: I think that one thing most people agree on, even when they don’t agree on other things, is to try to eliminate trans-fats from their diet, and saturated fats which can promote heart disease and cancer. They are generally found in processed food, fried food, junk food, red meat, and heavy animal proteins.

www.tampabaywellness.com

Q: What can you tell us about your position on the importance on the emotional aspects of stress reduction and management in the framework of a healthy lifestyle? A: It’s important for several reasons. Chronic emotional stress is associated with an increased risk of just about every illness. It suppresses the immune system, accelerates build up of plaque in your arteries, and so on. It also causes you to gain weight independent of the diet, because you are more likely to release hormones in your body that cause you to store fat when you’re under chronic emotional stress. But in addition stress, besides having a direct effect on your body, has an indirect effect because you’re more likely to smoke, overeat, drink too much, and work too hard and abuse substances when you are feeling stressed out. It’s not enough to just give people information and say: “Don’t smoke,” or “Do this or don’t do that.” We have to work at a deeper level. One patient told me, “I’ve got 20 friends and this pack of cigarettes and they’re always there for me and nobody else is. Are you going to

take away my 20 friends? What are you going to give me?” And so we don’t deal with underlying loneliness, depression, and isolation. That’s the real epidemic in our culture. The number one prescribed medication last year was antidepressants….So information is important, but we also have to work at a deeper level: at the psychosocial, and emotional, and even spiritual dimension. Q: Is there anything that you would like to add? A: We tend to think of advances in medicine as being a new drug or a laser, or something really high-tech and expensive. Many people have a hard time believing that these simple choices we make in our lives each day—like what we eat, and how we respond to stress, and how much exercise we get, and how much love and intimacy we have in our lives—that these simple choices can make a powerful difference, but they often do. And in our research, we’ve been using very high-tech, state of the art, twenty-first century medical technology to prove the power of these very low-tech, low cost, and often ancient interventions. ruits and veggies can pack a sweet, satisfying and sound punch. Yes, I know: It’s almost expected that we’ll gain a few pounds during the holidays. In fact, many of us welcome the cooler weather because we get to wear more layers and bulkier clothes, hiding our lumps and bumps. And yes, it is fun to indulge. Eating sweets is admittedly part of the holiday fun. But choosing some of the following seasonal fruits and vegetables may help you feel just a little more virtuous while you indulge.

omegranates, for example, are seasonal in the winter and are jam packed with cancer fighting chemicals. This nutritious “super fruit” with its shiny garnet podlets contains a high concentration of flavonoids and polyphenols. These are the same antioxidants found in green tea, red wine and grape juice. Polyphenols have been shown to help with heart health and cancer prevention by neutralizing free radicals. The tart and crunchy seeds make a beautiful garnish to a holiday platter and jazz up any salad. There are lots of pomegranate products on the market, but remember – fresh is best. Harvesting pomegranate seeds is very messy, so be prepared! Here’s a tidy tip: Cut off the top and the outer layer of the skin, being careful to leave the seeds intact. Immerse the whole fruit in a bowl of water. Pull the fruit apart, peeling the seeds from the skin and membrane. The seeds will sink to the bottom while the water controls the splatter. The membrane and shell will float to the top, making it easy to scoop off and dispose. Pour the remaining water and seeds through a colander. Personally, I have fun making a pomegranate mess with my kids. The juice will temporarily stain your fingers and other surfaces, so be sure to cover up or wear old clothes!

nother seasonal favorite that packs a healthy punch is the acorn squash. This little guy is so incredibly easy to prepare and is a gold mine of betacarotene, potassium and fiber. The body converts beta-carotene, one of the carotenoids, to vitamin A and is believed to help prevent cancers of the mouth, esophagus, throat and lung. Studies have also shown that it’s important to get beta-carotene from foods rather than supplements. When researchers gave beta-carotene pills to smokers, they did not have the same cancer-fighting effect. In fact, one large study showed an increase in cancer incidence in smokers supplemented with beta-carotene. Researchers believe the body needs the synergistic effect of other plant chemicals found naturally in vegetables and fruits. Smokers in the same study who consumed more fruits and vegetables had a lower incidence of cancer. To prepare and cook acorn squash, grab a sharp knife, cutting board, large spoon, brown sugar, cinnamon, plastic wrap and microwave-safe dish. Cut the squash in half through the stem, scoop out the insides and sprinkle the inside of each half with brown sugar and cinnamon (you decide how much). Cover with plastic wrap and microwave for 10 minutes. The insides should be soft and easy to scoop away from the outer shell. Eat and enjoy! My husband and I share a whole squash and eat it right out of the shell. If serving a crowd, scoop it onto a serving platter. Because of its high fiber content, it is filling but low in calories.

resh cranberries are usually abundant and inexpensive during the winter months. These little tart berries are packed with vitamin C and beta-carotene. They have a long shelf life in the refrigerator and are simple to prepare. I like to eat mine rolled in sugar. Really. Empty a bag of fresh cranberries in a colander, rinse and allow most of the excess water to drain. Pour about one-half cup of white granulated sugar (the kind you find in a sugar bowl) into a large resealable plastic bag. Pour the cranberries into the bag, shake until they are coated, and pour onto a platter or baking sheet to dry. These tasty treats have the perfect combination of sweetness and tartness. Enjoy them as a snack, or use them to garnish a large tray of cookies, snacks or appetizers. Refrigerate if not used right away. These little babies can satisfy your sweet tooth with minimal calories, lots of fiber and antioxidants!

s busy as Americans are today, fitting in time to eat is just another hassle to our day. This has caused us to grab anything off the shelf or stuff our face in the car after pulling threw the nearest drive-thru. You can save your health, money, and time by following a few planning tips. • Prepare ideas for the week. The last thing you want to do when you come home from a tough day of work is worry about what you are going to make for dinner. Jot ideas down about what to have the Sunday before the work week starts. This way you don’t have to stress about what to make. • Take an hour on the weekend to make a meal and make extras during the week. Cooking up a dish on Sunday will allow you to portion and place your meal in containers to have for at least a couple work days. When you do have a chance to cook make www.tampabaywellness.com

STEPS TOWARD A PERMANENT FITNESS PLAN By Lynn Gray • RRCA certified running coach

T

he half marathon and marathon fitness goal has spread like wildfire and captured the interest of countless participants, many of whom are in their middle ages. Why is that? Truly, this movement during one’s “middle ages” reveals a desire for a healthier lifestyle. Previous years of child rearing and/or career challenges has resulted in many of us putting off a disciplined fitness program for many years. With the opportunity of countless distances events, increased discretionary time, and the motivation of the New Year upcoming, it may now be the right time to take the “first step” and initiate a long distance goal. Attaining a distance goal such as 5K or a marathon comes about with some specific fitness training considerations. Below are twelve training steps which will help you stay on course and attain your goals. Make the commitment. Sign and post a contract in a prominent place: I, ______ have decided to begin a walk to run program and complete a__________ _distance. Buy quality running shoes. Get a pair of cushioned/stability running shoes. Be certain to allow ½ inch between the end of your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Use the buddy system. A buddy once or twice a week will help keep you on your fitness plan. Join a walking/running group which helps keep you motivated and has participants of similar and higher ability levels than yourself. Check foot form. Be sure you land on your heel: Roll your foot from heel to toe, and then push off forcefully with your toes. Check your body form. Chest out and shoulders straight; any slump or rounding of the shoulders and/or back

creates knee and shin problems. Core muscles must be strong to maintain good posture; likewise the back muscles must also be strengthened. Faster, Faster. Change your slow walk or jog to one which requires quicker steps for a short, but quicker range of motion and one which requires a long stride of the legs so you can cover more territory quicker; in each case this will increase your metabolic rate, increase your cadence, and prevent overuse of the same muscle groups. Change your walk to run areas. Seek out shaded and safe venues to train on. Make it your goal to have a different place to walk or run each time you venture out.

Practice agility. Aerobic movement and conditioning in general creates muscles. However, these muscles need to be stretched so range of motion is acquired. Think of practicing a yoga or Tai Chi class once a week. Arms count. Use your arms for forward motion. Make them strong by doing forward arm lunges with weights on in a stationary position. Think…Karate Kid. Do an out-back negative split. Check your pacing and fitness level by going out one specific distance and timing yourself. Turn around and repeat the same distance but come back a bit faster and note the faster time. The hills are alive. All levels of walkers and runners benefit from hill training; not only in energy expenditure but total muscle and aerobic development is exponentially increased. Reflect and enjoy. Both walkers and runners alike should take time to relax during their outing and use the outside time for reflection.

HOLIDAY BEAUTY DO’S & DONT’S By Lorene Radenz

W

hy is it that whenever you go to a holiday party, you can always find someone who doesn’t look how you would expect? Is it because you think they overdid their fashion or make-up, or is it a touch of envy?

BEAUTY DO’S Do Experiment. Check out the latest in make-up and fashion trends and give them a try. This will update your look and chances are, you’ll find something that enhances your skin tone and flatters your figure.

Do accentuate your finer features. Play up your best features and draw attention away from your problem areas. For example, do you have sleek shoulders but think your hips are too wide? Wear a sexy off-the-shoulder dress to show off your finer assets.

Do consult professionals. If you’re the do-it-yourself kind of gal, you can benefit from professional opinions now and then. Why not get a makeover for the holidays? Keep in mind, salons are booked tightly for the holiday season, so call well in advance for your appointment and use your time in the waiting room to look through magazines for updated hairstyles and fashions that best suit you.

Beauty queen or fashion disaster: It’s up to you. If you want to shine for the holidays, take note of these do’s and don’ts to spruce up your look and receive raves from your friends and family.

BEAUTY DON’TS Don’t be afraid of change. Dazzle your friends with a new look. Whether it’s a new hairstyle, hair color, or just a dress, you’ll get attention! Think of it this way, models look different for every shoot and are very versatile. Don’t they always look great?

Do simplify your beauty routine.

Don’t wear too much make-up.

Unless you’re headed out to a holiday party, forgo unnecessary extras that take up valuable time. Keep your hairstyle simple and make-up to natural colors that will look good with anything you wear.

There’s a fine line between a little extra holiday pizzazz and downright heavy makeup. Choose colors that compliment your face and blend it in well. Double check your face in bright lights before heading out the door.

Don’t forget accessories. Add the finishing touch to your overall appearance. The holidays are festive, so glam it up with accessories and jewelry. Splurge on that handbag you’ve wanted and don’t feel the least big guilty.

Don’t let stress get the better of you. It’s no secret that the holidays can be most stressful time of the year. PAPAYA PUMPKIN FACIAL 2/3 cup fresh papaya, mashed 15 oz. can pure pumpkin 1 egg, beaten

www.tampabaywellness.com

1. PREPARE THE MASK. Cut the papaya in half and scoop out the seeds. Scoop out the papaya fruit and mash it well to eliminate lumps in the mask. Beat the egg until it is frothy. Combine that with the papaya. Add the pumpkin to the egg/papaya mixture and whip together. You can also mix the ingredients in the blender or a food processor for an extra smooth mask.

3. APPLY THE MASK. Cover your entire face, being careful to avoid the immediate eye area. If you have sensitive skin, test the mixture on your hand before spreading it on your face. You’ll feel some tingling as the enzymes in the pumpkin go to work immediately -- gently exfoliating your top layer of skin. It works like a scrub without being abrasive to your skin. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes.

2. PREPARE YOUR FACE. Wash with your daily cleanser and remove all residual makeup on your skin. Rinse with warm water. It’s very important to have clean skin to ensure you get maximum benefits from the facial.

4. RINSE OFF MASK. After you’ve relaxed for ten minutes it’s time to rinse. The mask is fairly thick -- head for the kitchen sink. 5. APPLY TONER & MOISTURIZER. - This recipe is courtesy of www.Spaindex.com

Prevention With most strains of the flu, the elderly are particularly at risk. Over 90 percent of deaths and 60 percent of hospitalizations due to the flu occur in those over age 64. But interestingly, many adults over the age of 64 are not considered to be at high risk for complications resulting from H1N1, because approximately one third of adults over 64 are estimated to have existing antibodies to H1N1.

WHAT CAN YOU TO DO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM H1N1? “Everyone needs to take basic precautionary measures to prevent contracting H1N1,” says Cheryl Heintz, RN, BSN and nursing instructor at Everest College in Merrillville, Ind. This means you should wash your hands with soap and water often, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose and try to limit contact with sick people. If you cannot wash your hands with soap and water, Heintz suggests that you use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer as a substitute. Studies have shown that many influenza viruses can infect people up to eight hours after they have been deposited on a surface, which means that washing your hands frequently and using disinfectants to clean surfaces is an important way to prevent the spread of the disease.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE H1N1 VIRUS By: Donald E. Lighter, M.D.

I

t makes headlines every day - H1N1 and swine flu. If you have questions, you’re not alone. It’s difficult to decipher rumors from facts. While the

words “swine flu” and “pandemic flu” are enough to scare adults and children, experts from Everest

H1N1 is contagious and spreads from human-tohuman contact - specifically, through coughing, sneezing or surface contact. She adds, however, that the word “pandemic” simply means that the H1N1 has international reach, and not that it is particularly more dangerous than other forms of the flu.

College’s nursing programs explain what H1N1 is, and offer some advice for how to protect yourself and your children from it.

WHAT IS H1N1? H1N1 virus, more commonly known as “swine flu,” is a new strand of influenza that has been labeled a pandemic flu by the World Health Organization because of its international reach. It is expected to be the major strand of flu infecting people this flu season. Symptoms of H1N1 include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. “It is important to realize that the swine flu is just one strand of influenza. In that way, it is like the other strains of flu that hit the U.S. every fall and winter,” says Darlene Mention, RN, MSN and nursing instructor at Everest University in Brandon, Fla. She explains that, like other forms of the flu, 24 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

WHO IS AT RISK FOR H1N1? “Like other strains of influenza, H1N1 can cause complications, hospitalization and even death, so it is important to take precautionary measures,” says Mention. Each year approximately 36,000 people in the U.S. die from flu-related complications, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized, 20,000 of whom are children less than 5 years old. Complications from the flu usually arise in high-risk groups, which include children under 5, adults over 65, and adults with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 70 percent of those hospitalized with H1N1 this year have or previously had prior medical conditions that place them at “high risk,” including pregnancy, diabetes, heart disease, asthma or kidney disease.

If you are sick with a flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever subsides. “Staying home a full day after your symptoms have cleared not only helps you get back to full health, but also helps prevent the spread of the virus to others,” adds Heintz. Flu shots against H1N1 are now available in all states, though many states have only a limited supply. Certain groups of individuals are prioritized for the flu vaccine, including pregnant women, people in contact with infants under 6 months old, children and young adults ages 6 to 24, health care workers and emergency medical technicians, and adults younger than 65 with chronic conditions. “While the threat of H1N1 shouldn’t be blown out of proportion, it is important to realize the flu affects everyone differently. While most cases are mild, H1N1 can and has caused severe complications, hospitalization and even death. Given this knowledge, we want to do all we can to protect ourselves and our families as flu season approaches,” says Heintz. - Courtesy of ARAcontent DR. Mind

“...WHEN IN DOUBT, GIVE

ONE SIMPLE RULE

LOVE. IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, WHEN I SEE YOU

BY CHARLES ALLEN

NEXT TIME,

W

hen Ray and Beth came into my office for the first time, they each took an extreme side of the couch. The space left between them seemed like a measuring device to show years of resentment and disappointment. “He just doesn’t get me,” says Beth. “He can’t ever seem to just listen to me and get me. You know, understand what is important to me. That’s all I’ve ever wanted from him. Is that too much to ask? I can only do so much to keep our marriage working. And if I see him just one more time sneaking a cigarette on the front porch, I will have the lawyers draw up the papers before he can even finish that damn thing.” Five minutes into the session and tempers are already flaring. Now it’s Ray’s turn: “She’s one to talk. I’m just wondering if a bottle of wine a night is excessive Beth? And I do try to listen, if you would ever just get to your point instead of wandering off in ten different directions I could help you figure out your problems.” I have a gem of a therapeutic tool for these guys. I’m just waiting to grab it from my therapist toolbox. And when the time is right, I’ll hand it to them. I’ll give them just one simple rule. After ten more minutes of their verbal judo, I sneak in a move of my own, “So… Ray, Beth…how long have you guys been struggling with these infidelities? You know, this cheating on each other?” “Uh, Charles, you may have us mixed up with another couple, we haven’t cheated on each other. 26 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

YOU WILL HAVE BEGUN TO HEAL TOGETHER.”

We’re just having problems with the things we we’ve been talking about.” “Actually Ray you’re both cheating. Ray, you’re having an affair with your self. And Beth, you’re having an affair with your self. You’re not loving each other. You’re in competition with each other. And, you’re both competing to win the power position in your relationship.” In order to have a functional and happy marriage, Ray and Beth need to give up those selfish affairs with self-power, and start courting each other in partnership. And, most importantly, they need to learn how to love. Love is a gift and it needs to be given on a regular basis. My definition of love is simple: “To act with love is to do no harm and if possible to be of benefit.” Like most things in this universe, love has a dualistic nature – it has a passive side and an active side. For example, sometimes the loving gift is to not yell when a part of you would like to. Or, sometimes you gift by ignoring the part of your brain that would like to get even and have revenge. The other side of love is active – to be of benefit. Saying kind things, doing something beneficial for someone. This is the do nice things more tangible side of love.

“Well guys,” I say to Ray and Beth after giving them my love lecture, “I would like for you to work on one thing between now and the next time we meet. When you find your selves in the beginning of a conflict, see if one of you can recognize what’s going on and then I’d like for that person to ask for partnership. This means that you work together to solve the problem as if you were co-owners of a multimillion-dollar business. Now, you may have some doubts along the way during any part of working out the problem or afterward. And if that happens, I want you to remember just one simple rule. And, the simple rule is: When in doubt, give love. If you do nothing else, when I see you next time, you will have begun to heal together.”

MINDFULNESS IN A CRISIS BY RONALD ALEXANDER, PH.D.

I

n a crisis, we’re likely to resist change and give in to fear of the unknown. Yet the ancient Buddhist practice of mindfulness, remaining fully aware of what you are experiencing in the present moment, is the key to bringing yourself out of suffering and back into happiness. Mindfulness is a process of linking awareness with attention in order to develop, expand, and enhance both. It results in more focused and heightened concentration: You observe your thoughts and feelings rather than become immersed in them. You become aware that you have two selves, the self that’s having the experience and the self that is witnessing it and is separate from it. First, you allow this witnessing self to emerge in your consciousness. Then, instead of thinking about, analyzing, and building upon a sensation or feeling, such a sense of panic or sadness, you simply observe it as it arises. Then you catalog www.tampabaywellness.com

it as “not worthy of further exploration” or “something to contemplate later to see what I can learn from it,” and let it drift out of your awareness. As you meditate and allow the witnessing mind to sort through what arises, you’ll find that most of what it generates has little significance. The more you experience this process, the easier it will be to avoid jumping onto your thoughts or feelings and riding them like a wild horse wherever they take you. Peacefulness and joy can arise in you as you let that wild horse ride off into the distance.

Following our study, Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports, sent a letter to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg, with detailed results of our findings, reiterating our request that the agency act this year to ban the use of BPA in food- and beverage-contact materials. BPA & YOUR HEALTH Scientific studies suggest that BPA—a chemical widely used in food and beverage can linings, as well as in hard clear plastic bottles and food-storage containers—may cause harmful health effects from even common, low-dose exposures. econciling one’s green values with the urge to shop has never been easy. Most environmental groups today decry Western consumer habits as wasteful and a major cause of ecological degradation in a shrinking world. And many people, environmental issues aside, believe that the rampant commercialism we’ve all come to expect at holiday times cheapens what should be a reflective or sacred time of year. Our buying habits are not easy on the wallet, either. According to the Center for a New American Dream (CNAD), 60 million American families carry an average credit card debt of over $7,000 and pay more than $1,000 a year in interest and fees. For those who ply an ethic of moderation (for whatever reason) but still have to show up at a half-dozen holiday parties with something for under the tree, there are now more green-friendly (and affordable) options than ever before. Steer your web browser to any number of online merchants offering items from clothes, bed-and-bath and organic baby products to food, the latest books and “gifts that give back,” such as tree-planting kits and “fair trade” crafts that support economically disadvantaged communities 28 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

BPA IN PLASTICS & CANNED FOODS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW December 2009 Update:

BPA BANS In May 2009, Minnesota became the first state in the nation to ban BPA from plastic baby bottles and sippy cups beginning in 2011. Connecticut, Chicago, Suffolk County, NY, and other areas have imposed similar bans. Consumers Union has repeatedly called on the FDA to ban BPA in children’s products and food and beverage containers. While the FDA maintains that BPA is safe, the agency is expected to announce the findings of its most recent reassessment of the safety of BPA. Meanwhile, several plastic bottle manufacturers and retailers have vowed to stop selling BPA-containing products, and at least one BPA manufacturer has cut its production of the chemical in response to lessening demand.

in developing countries. A few popular sites include the Green Home Environmental Store, Global Exchange’s Fair Trade Online Store, The Eco-Store, Abundant Earth, and Gaiam, among others. A visit to Co-Op America’s National Green Pages Online is one quick path to a treasure trove of such options. While these stores all specialize in decidedly “green” items, many environmentally concerned consumers simply want to buy from mainstream retailers but want to feel confident their money is going to companies that are “good corporate citizens.” If you better fit that category of consumer, pay a visit to Alonovo.com,, which provides information on companies’ social and environmental records alongside thousands of products for sale in partnership with Amazon.com.. The website can also simply be used as a research tool to get the lowdown on companies before heading out to downtown or the mall. Alonovo rates companies in five different areas: social responsibility, workplace fairness, environmental issues, customer relations and overall business ethics. If you do buy from the site, the company shares from 20 to 40 percent of its profits with environmental and other nonprofits that you as a customer can choose. Some other options include Consumer Reports’ Greenerchoices.org, which rates mainstream products from cars to electronics based on environmental criteria, and Co-op America’s Responsible Shopper, which features detailed reports on various companies that market “green” consumer products.

Of course, you need not buy anything if you have a little more time (and items to re-use and recycle) on your hands than money. Sherri Osborn, the family crafts guide at About.com, offers up a healthy listing of “101 Great Gifts to Make” for any season, complete with links to instructions and materials needed.

By Richard Blackstone

THE SPIRITUAL ARCHITECT There are two types of spiritual architects.

One builds on a foundation of separation. The other builds on a foundation of oneness. Let us use our spiritual growth to examine how each of these architects plies their craft. The following spirituality information is an analogy for building the structure of your life. The builder who designs the structure of their life by using the foundation, the belief system, of separateness is limited by the expectation that there is something they need that they can fail to get. Everything they need is exterior to them. They are separate from whatever it is that they desire, including their architect. They can request their architect, the supplier of their needs, to fulfill whatever it is they request, but there is no guarantee that the architect will obtain the object of their desire and distribute it to them. There may be an insufficient supply in this architect’s warehouse. You don’t know, because you are separate from the architect and separate from whatever it is that you need in order to fulfill your desire. You don’t have a close working relationship with this architect who builds on the foundation of separateness. He is an elusive fellow who is not always available when you need him or have questions that 38 DECEMBER 2009 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

need answering. He’s a busy guy running a big busy operation. Not only is he an architect of people’s lives but he also has another gig where he is a judge.

That’s another nice thing about working with the architect that builds upon a foundation, a belief, of oneness. You are in a true collaboration with her and no matter what kind of structure, what kind of life, you decide to build it is okay with the architect. In fact, this architect revels in the diversity of her clients. This architect doesn’t put demands or requirements on her clients and conversely does not judge the structure, the life, which the clients pick out for themselves. This architect has a never-ending relationship with his clientele and is more than willing to remodel, upgrade or tear down and build again any structure, any life, which the client decides should be their next creation. Remember this architect is available 24/7. By making no demands or requirements about how you, the builder, decide to design the structure of your life, the architect makes no judgment about your tastes or desires. You can be as outlandishly extravagant as you want or as bland as you care to be. With this architect, the client is the boss so no structure, no life, is ever praised as the best or condemned as the worst. All the structures, the lives, designed upon this foundation, this belief system, are worthy projects in

the eyes of this architect who receives his joy from just being in collaboration with the client.

The client is the boss, so there are no conditions imposed by the architect that would restrict her ability to fulfill the client’s wishes. Whatever structure, whatever life, the client desires is what the architect supplies and delivers. It all looks good to this architect. There are no structures, no lives, which are superior or inferior to any others. They are all equal in the quality of construction. Each structure, each life, is different and unique in its own way because each builder has a different, unique take on how they want their structure, their life, to look and function. So each builder, each person, is building the structure, the life, that is designed and constructed by them in collaboration with an architect that has the sole goal in mind of collaborating on the structure of a life that is chosen by each and every client with the free will to choose whatever they desire, with the provision that they are free to change the structure of their life in any given moment of now. This architect is so gracious that she will even allow you to use the architect that builds upon the foundation of separateness if you so desire.
