ince so many people have asked, I think I need to start this Ed’s letter with the confirmation that, yes, married life is brilliant, thanks. Loving it so far. Admittedly, I’m only three months into it but if it carries on like this, I’ll be very happy. I’m a latecomer to the wedded world. The first of my friends to get married did so about 25 years ago. What have I been doing all this time? Don’t know – travelling, career building (supposedly), dating… the time just flies. Anyway, I’m here now and my husband and I are working out our life together. I think he finally understands that when I said I don’t cook, ever, I really meant it. And I’m getting used to rising at 5.45am to help him get out the door and on the road to Abu Dhabi in time for work – I make his breakfast while he’s in the shower. Pouring branflakes into a bowl isn’t cooking. Anyway, let’s move onto the magazine. One of my favourite stories in this issue is about a Dubai woman and animal communicator who gives Reiki healing to animals – we got her around to our house to have a chat with our cat Jake. You can read what our cat told her on page 10. The green smoothie story on page 22 is another goodie, since reading it I’ve been making smoothies every day for the last couple of weeks and I feel great for it. Since I generally try everything we talk about in the magazine, I’ve also been making my own shampoo for the last two weeks out of baking soda and water. Read the ‘no poo’ story on page 30 to find out why. Another thing we were wondering recently was why you never see hybrid or electric cars on Sheikh Zayed Road so we’ve asked the question, ‘Can I buy an eco-friendly car in the UAE?’ and were surprised to find the answer was ‘yes’, see page 34. I hope you enjoy this issue, don’t forget to ‘like’ our Facebook page to keep up to speed on holistic living in the UAE between issues.

Reiki for

Is your pet absorbing your issues? From falcons to puppies, fish, reptiles, monkeys, horses, cats and wild animals - a little energy healing goes a long way.

F

or those who believe in energy healing, physical and mental illness are the manifestations of unresolved emotional issues. For example, energy healers believe that diseases like cancer can be the result of an inability to receive love due to perhaps a subconscious belief of not being worthy. Addressing these emotional root causes of disease is the purpose of healing modalities such as Theta healing, Hypnotherapy, Reiki, Pranic healing, Spiritual Response Therapy and other energetic based therapies. It’s not just humans who manifest illness as a result of unresolved emotional issues though, Dubai-based Reiki healer Sabine Poncelet believes many of the problems animals have are often the result of their own feelings of abandonment, jealousy, neglect, or lack of love. In addition she says, our

pets are also a sponge for our negative emotions and feelings. “Reiki is energy, ultimately. It’s a life force energy and when your energy is not in balance you can get sick,” Poncelet says. “Your chakras are energy centres. The best example is your solar plexus chakra, which is linked mainly to all your digestive organs. When you have a stomach ulcer, even a traditional doctor will tell you, ‘reduce your stress’. “When your energy centres are not balanced, you develop problems. It’s the same with animals but more so

www.awakeningsme.com

page 8-11 animal reiki.indd 8

because people transfer their energies to their pets. When you touch or stroke an animal, you may not realise it but you are transferring your energy and emotions. Animals are like a sponge in that way, so are young children.”

BORN INTUITIVE

Originally from from Belgium, Poncelet has been in Dubai since 2011. For more than 15 years she was a financial controller before becoming a full-time Reiki and energy healer for humans and animals. She knew at the age of seven that she had a

natural talent for healing and could communicate with animals but it wasn’t until she healed her own daughter with Reiki that she devoted herself fully to energy healing. “I was very intuitive. When I put my hands on people with pain or injuries, they disappeared. I could communicate with animals too; I could feel what they were thinking. I also knew things in advance but my mother said to me, ‘oh it’s just your imagination, forget about this…’ so of course I believed her and for a long time I didn’t use my abilities like I use them now.” As she got older though, Poncelet started researching healing modalities like Reiki and Magnetism. She studied Reiki initially in Europe as she found it was the modality that offered the best explanation for her natural gifts.

HANDS ON HEALING

Poncelet’s first major success was when her own daughter was born with gastric reflux. She was aged 24 and her newborn baby could not hold milk down because the valve at the bottom of her esophagus would not close. So, she would vomit everything back up, which caused major internal inflammation. “She was just one month old when my doctor told me she would have to be on medication for six years but that this would not heal her, the medication would only reduce the symptoms,” Poncelet said. “I would have tried anything so I put my hands on her in the place she had the pain.” For the next two years, Poncelet gave her daughter the doctor’s medication but she also gave her regular Reiki healing sessions.

9

PET OWNERS’ FEEDBACK We spoke to some of the people who’ve taken their troubled pets to Sabine Poncelet for Reiki healing, here’s what they said: Cat: Hippie, age 4 Human: Lucie Fonseca, Dubai Issue: Hippie wouldn’t accept a new cat into the house. “Hippie was rescued from the streets of Abu Dhabi when she was about a year old. When she came to us, she was very scared and jumpy. She was also afraid of other cats. Whenever there was another cat around, she would become obsessed by it, stalk and growl all the time, stop eating, stop sleeping, stop purring. She would be very stressed. In April this year, we decided to adopt a new cat, Pepper. We asked Sabine to do a Reiki treatment on Hippie to help her deal with the stress of the other cat in the house. We did one session before the two cats were introduced and one after. The results were brilliant. After the treatments, Hippie accepted Pepper really fast. One week after the second Reiki treatment, we were able to leave the two cats together without supervision and there were no fights. They did not become best friends but they co-exist peacefully. I think Sabine’s intervention helped Hippie feel relaxed and secure so she didn’t feel the need to show aggression and the introduction was a success.” Horse: Prince, age four and a half Human: Vicky Remy, Belgium Issue: Prince was losing weight and refusing to eat Not long after we bought Prince in 2008, he virtually stopped eating despite no physical problem and the vet didn’t know why. He lost a lot of weight, we were very worried. After the first Reiki session, we could see he was feeling better, he started to smell his food and nibble small portions. Sabine said the horse was feeling very sad because he had lost a much loved family member. After the two sessions he was eating normally again and we’ve never had this problem with him since. Sometime later, we found out from the previous owners that Prince had lost his mate not long before we got him. Sabine completely surpassed our expectations; we are very grateful.” Reiki healer Sabine Poncelet and her dog Petzi. (Courtesy of Baginskaya Gallery and Studio)

“After two years I stopped the medication because she was fully healed – something the doctor said would never happen.” After that, Poncelet studied more energy healing modalities and worked on family and friends with wonderful results. “For 20 years, I was working more on people than animals and initially I only worked on my own animals but later on, when I was about 36, I started working on the animals of my friends in Belgium. Mostly on dogs, cats and horses.”

DOG DEMENTIA

Animals are very sensitive to energy, Poncelet says, and often respond very well to Reiki and energy healing. She says the issues pets can be caused by the owner - not all the time but it happens. As in the case with a Pekinese dog she worked on recently who suffered from panic attacks, anxiety, sleeplessness and dementia. In his crazed episodes, he would run straight into walls and his owners were at a loss as to how to help him, they were considering euthanasia. “Geordie is 13 years old and after six Reiki sessions he is now fine but when the owner called me, this dog was in a terrible state, he was crazy. It was my first case of dementia and I didn’t know what to do but when I touched him to do the Reiki, I discovered that he was very linked to this woman, his owner. Some dogs are more independent, less sensitive but this dog was soul-linked to her. The dog was like her baby and of course the dog can feel this so he was emotionally involved in the woman’s troubles. She had a lot of problems in her life so she was very stressed and depressed. Unfortunately, her dog took on her troubles.

“At first, I didn’t expect a great result because I didn’t know the origin of the dementia, but when I discovered the origin was in the dog/owner relationship and the dog was having panic attacks because of the owner’s troubles, I thought ‘ok, now I’ve got the root’. The illness is the consequence of the root trouble. You have to get the root and sometimes it’s completely different to the illness.” When the owner understood this, she began making changes in her life, Poncelet says. “Since the Reiki, Geordie

Animals teach us a lot of things including, how to be committed, how to love unconditionally, and how to receive love has been much better, the owner sent me a message last week saying, ‘Wow, it’s wonderful, I don’t know how to thank you. We’re doing so much better.’”

HORSE PLAY

Just like humans, animals suffer from emotional stress and physical illness but some animals are more sensitive than others, Poncelet says. Dolphins are the most sensitive animals on Earth followed by horses. “That’s why we use horses to work with autistic children because they are able to understand certain things, when you speak with a horse – not like speaking with a human – you have the feeling that he understands you. I can’t explain it, it’s amazing.”

www.awakeningsme.com

page 8-11 animal reiki.indd 10

She tells the story of another recent canine client, a chihuahua that was dying from a cancerous tumour. “This chihuahua was at the end of her life when the woman called me, there was not much I could do other than relieve the animal’s suffering in its final days. That first session was 90 minutes long, normally a session is about 30 minutes to an hour but this little dog was sucking in the energy she needed. I asked the dog what happened and how she was feeling, she communicated with me she was feeling depressed, and sad. She told me that since her owner’s baby was born, she had felt rejected. The dog told me, ‘she didn’t look at me anymore; I was abandoned like I was nothing’. “After the session, I asked the owner when the cancer had developed and she said, ‘after my baby was born, maybe nine months to a year later’. “I believe cancer is the result a lack of love, especially for humans. It can manifest because you cannot express your love or you don’t know how to receive love, it’s linked. For animals it is the same, in this case especially.” The chihuahua died four days later but the owner’s feedback was that, after the Reiki session, the dog was much more peaceful and the relationship between the dog and the woman was better so the little dog passed away in peace.

THOUGHTS ARE ENERGY

What Poncelet would like people to understand is that their emotions can affect their pets and that the pet’s own feelings contribute to physical and mental ailments, this could be sadness, rejection, abandonment, neglect, etc

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2013

awakenedminds

and could be caused by anything from a new animal or baby being brought into the house to old trauma from abuse or neglect from their early life. Even if an animal is now in a loving home, it may have psychological issues stemming from early ill treatment. “I believe your illnesses start with your thoughts because your body reacts to your thoughts. It is all just energy that flows through the meridians and chakras of your body and into your organs. It’s the same thing for animals.” For Poncelet, seeing her animal clients become happier, healthier little creatures after a few sessions of energy healing gives her great joy and satisfaction. Poncelet hopes that one day it will be commonplace to combine alternative and complementary therapy with traditional veterinarian practice as well as with allopathic medicine for humans. In the UAE, this is not usual yet but in the US, Reiki is now commonplace in hospitals with many patients opting for a Reiki session before surgery. In Japan, Theta healing is being used in hospitals and in Germany and Switzerland, a Reiki consultation and treatment is refunded under your health insurance policy, as long as the Reiki practitioner is certified. “We owe so much to the animals in our lives,” Sabine says. “Animals teach us a lot of things including, how to be committed, how to love unconditionally, and how to receive love because they love you unconditionally, all animals without any exception.”

TRIED AND TESTED BY JAKE THE AWAKENINGS CAT Can Reiki really help pets be happier and healthier? Awakenings wanted to find out so we took animal Reiki healer Sabine Poncelet home to give our cat, Jake, a health check. When we asked Sabine to come over to our house and give our two-year-old cat Jake a check up, we honestly thought there was nothing wrong with him. Apart from a little limping from a hip operation he’d had about 12 months earlier, he seemed fine. How wrong we were! Sabine came over and after a 10 minute body scan of Jake and a chat with him via his higher self, we were surprised to be told that he was feeling intense pain around his teeth and jaw area and that the parasites in his small intestine were out of control which was giving him an upset stomach. We had to admit he was long overdue a de-worming treatment. “Take him to vet to check,” Sabine said, “I don’t know what is causing the pain around his teeth and jaws but he tells me it is intense and he cannot cope with it, he has asked for help. “As for the hip, he says this doesn’t really bother him, only sometimes, he can cope with it. A joint supplement would help though.” So Sabine gave Jake some Reiki to suppress the pain for a while and we took Jake to the vet a couple of days later. Sure enough, the vet tells us that Jake has a severe ear infection caused by ear mites and that it would be causing him a lot of pain. We then remembered he had been scratching his ears a lot lately, we’d even mentioned it a couple of weeks earlier. By the next day, it was obvious even to us that Jake was in a huge amount of pain and discomfort but at least we’d started him on medication for the ear infection. It was heart-breaking to see him in so much pain so we got Sabine back in to do a full Reiki session on him. He communicated with her that the pain was now consuming his whole head. She worked on him for about 30 minutes and he seemed slightly better immediately. Within 24 hours, he was noticeably better. We’re extremely grateful to Sabine for her help with Jake. It was also interesting to hear some of the other things he had to say as well, for example, apparently he gets bored sometimes and he doesn’t feel very confident about facing up to other cats in the neighbourhood. So, we’re going to get another cat to be his companion, a very young female, Sabine advises, and we’ll get him a Reiki session to work on his confidence. hy am I writing an article on depression? Because for most of my life I haven’t liked me. Depression and manic depression have left their marks upon the face of my reality. Yet whilst those shadow days of the past were scary times, they taught me how to find my light. Now, I can confidently say I don’t fear my shadows. I observe them, breathe them and through them there is always a sparkling light of new selfdiscovery. For anyone who has known selfloathing, felt un-loveable and lived with depression, I want to share with you how getting out of your head and into your

heart can be a way out of depression. You are your own unique creation and when the words you speak to yourself are ones of love, you and your life can change in magical ways. Happiness is a state of mind, a state of being. Joy and sorrow are the two faces of the same coin we call life. With every toss of that coin you never know which side will land face up. Life is never all joy or all sorrow. It’s a rollercoaster of ups and downs and it is your ability to enjoy the ride, embracing and accepting not just the highs of life but the lows too, that will determine your life experience. You are all you believe yourself to be. It takes courage, self-discipline and time to learn how to change the way you think and behave. If you are depressed or suffer from bouts of depression it is even more challenging to make such changes... but it is possible.

The endless thoughts and chatter that have you alone in the dark can become quiet and be silenced when you allow yourself to see and feel the light within

BULLIED

I didn’t always suffer from low selfesteem and bouts of depression. As a very young child I was confident, outgoing and very gregarious. My father was an army medic and like many ex-pat army kids we lived in many countries and met many other people just like us. When my father left the army and moved to the north east of England when I was 11, I started being bullied. By the time I hit puberty I hated myself. That’s when the self-loathing started and a need for constant approval and acceptance. As I grew older, this transformed into a self-destructive sex addiction that only served to fuel that low self-esteem. Depression is like a black dog that has

13

kept following me around and recently peri-menopause has made it a rabid black dog. Having lived through my mother’s struggle with bipolar manic depression and her suicide attempts I swore I would never be like that. Yet just nine months ago I lay in a bath going through in my mind how I would kill myself. That’s when I said enough is enough. I tried anti-depressants but it just wasn’t the route I wanted to take. I’m not judging those people who do; everyone needs to find their own path. There are many forms of depression and manic depression that require medication. My dear mum is now healthy and well because she is on Lithium and HRT and without that combination she is victim to her mania and so is all of my family. I am ever thankful to my mum for accepting her illness and choosing to seek help. Now, many years on, we are the closest and happiest we have ever been as a family.

INTO YOUR HEART

If you’re like me then you will function well a lot of the time but also have periods or bouts of depression and are prone to low self-worth and negative thinking. One thing’s for sure, we are not alone. One in four people will experience some form of mental illness in the course of a year, the most common being anxiety and depression. About 10 per cent of children have a mental health problem at any one time. [Source: Mental Health Foundation UK statistics 2012] So, how do you get out of your head into your heart? You think less and feel more. It is what I call ‘intelligence of the heart’. Practises

DECEMBER, A WAY OUT OF DEPRESSION SEMINAR

Alison is in Dubai in November to host her seminar, Get out of your head and into your heart... a way out of depression. She’ll be sharing insights, ideas and resources on finding a path out of depression. Places are limited. Register your interest for receiving updates, email alison@alison-day.co.uk.

Q. How do I recognise early signs of depression?

S.A.D - Sadness – Apathy – Doubt. Typical signs of depression include: Trouble concentrating and making decisions; becoming withdrawn and anti-social; crying for no real reason or feeling hopeless and afraid; irritability, anxiety or panic attacks; feeling apathetic and unmotivated; low libido; insomnia, and suicidal thoughts.

Q. What can I do if I think I might be depressed? Acknowledge that you might be depressed and allow yourself to ask for help and support from loved ones, friends and family. Do something: Co-creator of NLP Dr Richard Bandler said if there was one thing he could give as advice to help overcome depression in the early stages is to ‘do something’. He says depression is like falling down an endless series of rabbit holes, the less active you are and

the more withdrawn and reclusive you become, the worse your depression can get. Go for a walk, accept your friend’s invitation for lunch, listen to music, watch a comedy. Do anything that makes you feel good. Medicate: While it’s not for everyone, anti-depressant medication has helped people. Talk to your doctor. Get help: There are countless therapies available within the realms of traditional medicine and alternative healing. Keep trying till something clicks with you. Options include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Your doctor can refer you or look for a qualified therapist. A starting point is Life Works on Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah, Dubai. Go to www.counsellingdubai.com. Theta healing: There are many theta healers in the UAE, one of

whom is Vanya Silverten. Contact Illuminations Wellbeing Centre, JLT, Dubai on 04 448 7043. H

ave you ever entered a place and felt extremely uncomfortable without knowing why, or have you ever met someone who gave you the creeps for no particular reason? There are many situations where you may experience a feeling that’s beyond logical explanation; situations where your gut feeling goes against your rational mind and you experience an internal conflict. This may happen in a business setting where you need to take a decision with regards to an important business deal or on the job when you choose people to work with. It can also happen in a situation where your gut feeling tells you not to trust someone, not to go somewhere, or the opposite, to go somewhere, to do something or to call someone. Examples of intuition are many - be it at work or in other settings, sometimes you may ignore or miss out on the powerful messages that come from your intuition. I’m sure you have experienced a situation where you chose to follow your rational mind rather than your intuition only to find out later that you should have listened to your gut feeling.

THEORY OF INTUITION

Unleash your

intuition

Your intuition or inner guidance is one of your greatest gifts. Listen to that little voice, says Helga Marin Bergsteinsdottir.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 16-17 intuition.indd 16

Albert Einstein said: “Intuition is nothing but the outcome of earlier intellectual experience.” Others have stated that your intuition comes from your DNA and yet others view the intuition as the voice of your higher self or the voice of God. Selfhelp author Wayne Dyer says that if you talk to God through prayers, God talks to you through your intuition. I am fascinated with the theories of quantum physicists who claim that we are all connected through a unified field and we all contribute to one universal consciousness. David Hawkins uses a nice metaphor in his book, Power Verses Force, to describe how human beings are connected to this unified field. He compares human beings to computers and says if a computer has to rely solely on the information stored on the hard disc, it is limited to the amount of information stored there. On the other hand, if the computer connects to the internet it has access to an endless flow of information.

feel better but will open the gates to allow abundance and wellbeing to flow into your life.

RAISE YOUR VIBES

If human beings are like computers, it is through connecting to the unified field that we get access to new ideas and inspiration. Our intuition is part of the whole picture and I believe it is through our intuition we receive information that is beyond the information we have stored in the subconscious mind and we can also, through our intuition, read the energy of people and places. Our intuition is then our natural intelligence that stretches far beyond the brain and the information we keep stored there. I believe connecting to this natural intelligence is our best bet for living a fulfilled and happy life.

UNIFIED CONSCIOUSNESS

David Hawkins explains how we are not only connected to the unified field but how each one of us is constantly influencing that field of unified consciousness with our thoughts and our emotions. Depending on the thoughts we think we give out different energy/vibration. The higher the vibration the closer we are to God consciousness. The closer we are to God consciousness the more we are in tune with our intuition and the stronger the connection to higher powers and to the unified field. So if we are all born with this natural intelligence how come so many of us choose to ignore that inner voice? It usually happens as we grow older. Our minds take on the social conditioning and values and we no longer tune into our intuition or inner voice for guidance.

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2013

page 16-17 intuition.indd 17

HEARING THE INNER VOICE

It takes practice to know whether the voice comes from your intuition or your head. Here are some simple steps to determine where the voice comes from: Ideas that come from your intuition: w Bring you peace w Re-enter your mind again and again w Make you feel excited w You have an inner knowing that it is the right thing to do w You feel compelled to follow the idea even though it doesn’t make sense Tuning into this inner voice takes more than just practice. My observation is that I need to raise my level of consciousness to feel connected or inspired (in spirit). Your level of consciousness is affected by your thoughts and your emotions, which in turn affects your attitude, your beliefs and your values. When I feel down, hopeless or frustrated I have noticed that all doors to new opportunities close and my mind shuts out all the new and exciting ideas. Conversely, when I feel inspired, optimistic and happy, opportunities and new ideas show up without any effort from my side. It is therefore crucial to practice raising your level of consciousness with positive thinking and a positive attitude. The four fundamental emotions that vibrate at the highest level are the feelings of peace, joy, happiness and gratitude. Practicing getting into these four emotional states on a daily basis not only helps you to

Which is all very well but how do you raise your level of consciousness? w For a start, pay attention to your inner critic. Be conscious of any negative thoughts entering your mind and gently turn them into constructive and positive thoughts; w Nourish your body with live, nutritious foods that allow the flow of energy through your body; w Listen to music that touches you emotionally, that lifts your spirit and warms your heart; w Feed your brain with reading material that inspires, uplifts and broadens your mind; w Keep your home environment tidy and uncluttered. Organise your home in line with the principles of Feng Shui, allowing the free flow of energy; w Spend time in every day in nature, either by the sea, in the mountains or in a forest w Avoid environments where there is loud music and alcohol; w Random acts of kindness. Find opportunities to be kind to a living being every day (includes yourself!); w Use positive affirmations that empower you and are in line with who you want to become; w Use visualisation to connect to universal powers; w Let go of ego dominance that tries to tell you, ‘I am what I have, my reputation, my education, my accomplishments, my job and my role in society.’ You are so much more than the sum of these things. You are magnificent and you can choose to be a hostage of your ego or a host to God.

When a healer’s

mum gets cancer Surgery or cut back sugar? I’ll take the surgery thanks.’ Is a lifestyle change the hard option? Karen Degen has a thriving business treating clients using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) aka tapping. When her own mother gets cancer she examines why many people would rather take drugs or have surgery than make lifestyle changes

M

y mother has cancer and was advised by a natural health practitioner to eliminate sugar from her diet. She has been unwilling to do that but is quite willing to undertake chemotherapy. ‘Lifestyle change or serious drug that will nearly kill me? Oh I’ll take the drug thanks.’ The choice is incomprehensible to me but it seems it’s the one most people take.

In the book Love, Medicine & Miracles by Dr Bernie Siegel, he talks about what makes someone survive a serious illness. He says: “Patients vary enormously. Some will do almost anything rather than alter their lives to increase their chances for a cure. When I offer them a choice between an operation and a change in lifestyle, eight out of ten say: ‘Operate, it hurts less.’” Like my mother, most people want the quick fix and aren’t prepared to make changes. Even though I successfully treat clients with serious illnesses including cancer, I’m not treating my mum, I have elected to send her to someone else. There are two main reasons why, as a healer, I don’t treat my own mother. Firstly, to some people I’m their therapist but to others I’m a daughter, friend, wife, or sister. When they have a problem they are expecting to talk to that person. Treating them like a client when they haven’t asked for that type of help can be relationship damaging. I don’t change

www.awakeningsme.com

page 18-19 Mother Cancer.indd 18

my clients. I show them that they need to change and help them to do it. They need to want to change at some level and need to take some action. It is a joint effort. Don’t assume that everyone is ready to look inside themselves and even if they are don’t assume they are ready to change. Secondly, to treat a client I usually need to work with issues deeply hidden in the subconscious mind. I have the skill to do this easily with clients but with myself, family or friends I am clouded by what I know. My feelings and perceptions will stop me seeing their truth, which might be different from my truth. Gary Craig (the original founder of EFT) always said it was important to ‘get yourself out of the way’. When it comes to family, you are intertwined in their life and can’t get out of the way enough, even if you think you can.

LAW OF ATTRACTION

Many people have loved ones who aren’t prepared to go to a non-traditional healer such as myself. This can be frustrating for those who understand the undeniable link between your emotions and your physical health. They often ask me for advice on what they can do to help someone who won’t get help. I tell them two things. Firstly, that your loved one has their life to live, their choices to make and their emotions to feel. Your job is to deal with your emotions. Work on yourself for the worry and fear or work with someone like me if you can’t do it on your own. The second piece of advice I give is to do with the Law of Attraction and I quote Abraham (Esther Hicks) who said: “When you focus upon the problems of others, you diminish

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2013

awakenedheart

your ability to help them. People believe that you’ve got to focus upon the problem in order to find a solution. And we say, no solution ever comes forth - it’s never inspired; you never recognise it, and you are never able to facilitate or achieve it - from your place of focusing on the problem. They are two entirely different vibrations. If you have someone who has many things going wrong and one thing going right, beat the drum of what’s going right, and let that be your point of attraction. If you focus upon their problems, you achieve vibrational harmony with something other than the Source that gives you solution.”

UNRESOLVED EMOTIONS

If, as Dr Bernie Siegel said, 80 per cent of people are not willing to make lifestyle changes for their health, that leaves us with 20 per cent who are. Being willing to make changes however is not the same as being able to. A professional change expert such as an EFT Practitioner knows how to make those changes easily and permanently. Lifestyle change is within your reach but only if you reach out for it.

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2013

page 18-19 Mother Cancer.indd 19

The body has an ability to heal itself if it is given the right environment. Many doctors and medical institutions are now saying that the main cause of most illnesses is unresolved emotional issues. The right environment therefore includes being free of negative thoughts, beliefs and emotions. It’s often ‘nice’ people who get these serious diseases because they are the ones who don’t put themselves first; they don’t say ‘no’ and don’t express their negative emotions, especially anger. That old saying, ‘only the good die young’ has a basis of truth. As a EFT healer, it is my job to clear those unresolved issues. Once I’ve done that however the client still needs to make

19

lifestyle changes to prevent getting sick again in future if they continue to live life the same way. Lifestyle changes I typically teach clients to make include the following: w How to give their opinion, speak up or speak out, rather than leaving things unsaid (which usually results in unresolved emotion) w How to say ‘no’. Many ill people are people pleasers and are always giving to others to the detriment of themselves. w That they must put themselves first and teaching them how to, because many ill people have never done it and don’t know how to start. w How to process their emotions as opposed to suppressing them.

Arabic cupping therapy The ancient practice of hijama, or cupping, is a traditional Arabic medical technique that dates back thousands of years but is still widely used today. Samar Khan reports.

C

upping is an ancient form of therapy that’s been used in traditional Arabic medicine for centuries. It is part of the Unani system of traditional medicine widely practiced by Muslims. Unani medicine is based on the concept of the four humours: phlegm (balgham), blood (dam), yellow bile (safra) and black bile (sauda). There are four types of treatment available, regimental therapy, pharmacotherapy, dietotherapy and surgery. Hijama, or cupping, falls into the regimental therapy category and addresses diseases like migraine, sinusitis, piles, back pain, spondilitis, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended this practice around fourteen hundred years ago. He said: “Cupping is a cure for every disease if performed in its correct time. Indeed in cupping there is a cure.

“Whoever performs cupping on the 17th, 19th, or 21st day (of the Islamic lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” In Arabic, the word ‘Hijama’ is derived from the root word ‘hajm’, which means ‘sucking’. Cupping (hijama) is the process of applying cups to various points on the body (usually acupressure points) by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum. It’s believed that 70 per cent of diseases and ailments are due to blood being unable to reach certain parts of the body. Hijama activates the lymphatic system whilst stimulating the production of new and healthier blood and promoting the free flow of the body´s energy, blood and fluids. There are three methods of cupping: 1. Dry cupping - A process of using a vacuum on different pressure points in the body in order to gather blood in that

www.awakeningsme.com

page 20-21 cupping.indd 20

area without incisions. This is believed to detoxify and remove congestion. 2. Dry massage cupping - This is a process similar to dry cupping. Olive oil is applied to the skin before applying the cups in order to allow easy movements of the cups. Dry and massage cupping may be administered any time of the day, any day of the week or month without restrictions. 3. Wet cupping - This form of cupping is a process of using a vacuum at different pressure points on the body but with small incisions in order to remove ‘harmful’ blood, which lies just beneath the surface of the skin. Wet cupping should only be administered by a cupping therapist.

WHERE CAN YOU GETCUPPING THERAPY IN THE UAE? ROOTS OF UNANI

Similar to the Indian tradition of Ayurveda, the traditional Arabic system of medicine called Unani stems from the teachings of Greek physician Hippocrates and Roman physician Galen. It’s based on the Hippocratic theory of the four humours: Phlegm (balgham), Blood (dam), Yellow bile (safra) and Black bile (sauda). These teachings were taken and developed into an elaborate medical system by Arab and Persian physicians such as Rhazes (al-Razi), Avicenna (Ibn Sina), AlZahrawi, and Ibn Nafis. Unani medicine is very close to Ayurveda.

The four humours theory suggests the presence of blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile in the human body. Each person’s unique mixture of these substances determines his mizaj (temperament). This theory holds that when the four basic substances are in balance, a person is healthy. All diseases and disabilities supposedly resulted from an excess or deficit of one of these four substances. SAMAR KHAN is a student of The Avicenna Institute and a consultant of Naturopathic Medicine.

UNANI AND THE FOUR HUMOURS Though all the systems of medicine consider Hippocrates as the Father of Medicine, the Unani System of Medicine is the only one still following the principles of medicine laid down by Hippocrates and his theory of the four humours, which believes that a person’s health is determined by an equal balance of these four substances, namely dam (blood), balgham (phlegm), safra (yellow bile), and sauda (black bile). If the balance is disturbed, ill health sets in. Unani has a number of methods of redressing any imbalance, which include herbal remedies and hijama (cupping). Beginner’s guide to

green smoothies For an intense hit of nutrients have a daily green smoothie, writes raw food health coach Jennifer Thompson.

W

hen was the last time you ate a whole bunch of spinach or parsley in one day? Chances are, you never have yet leafy greens like these pack a powerful punch of nutrition. A great way to utilise the amazing power of green leaf vegetables is with a daily green smoothie. I started making Green Smoothies almost eight years ago. Every morning, I blend a combination of fruit and greens and it fills me up for a healthy start to the day.

I first started Green Smoothies after several months on the raw food diet, and right away, I felt a difference. My energy levels improved and thanks to the added ground flaxseed in the Green Smoothie, so did my bowel movements. This was something everyone could do at home, even if they didn’t want to go into a strict raw food diet. So, I started telling my clients about Green Smoothies. Some of the successes I’ve seen in clients include:

www.awakeningsme.com

page 22-24 green smoothies.indd 22

Symptoms of menopause – gone; acid reflux – gone; sugar cravings – gone; colitis – gone; PMS – improved; digestive disorders and constipation: gone; skin conditions – cleared; sleep function - improved; arthritis – gone… the list just goes on. One of my clients got her 86-year mother hooked on Green Smoothies and saw her digestion function and energy levels improve. Another client canceled his knee replacement surgery after he realized

GREEN SMOOTHIES 101 Some of the questions people commonly ask when they first enter the world of green smoothies… Q. When greens are liquidised in a blender, do they lose nutrients? To break down all the fiber and cellulose in green leaves, you would have to spend several hours a day chewing and have extremely healthy teeth. In a Green Smoothie, the blender does the chewing for you, blending all the greens into very small pieces. So, a Green Smoothie can actually provide more nutrition because it’s blended, not less. Q. Can I use powdered greens instead of fresh? The real benefits and healing potential in Green Smoothies lie in the fresh leafy greens, due to their fibere, nutrients and live enzymes. Powdered greens (spirulina, wheatgrass powder, kelp, green powder blends, etc.) are great to add to your Green Smoothie for even more nutritional power, but don’t forget to use fresh greens too. Although, if you’re travelling, powdered greens are a practical way to enjoy Green Smoothies on the road. Q. Can I use ice or frozen fruit? Energy is required to ‘warm up’ a frozen drink and that energy takes away from the process of digestion and absorption. Using cold water is ok because it’s not nearly as cold as ice. Q. Can I add yogurt or milk instead of water? Dairy is mucous-forming to the body and can slow down the cleansing and absorption process. Eat dairy products in your daily diet if you choose but keep the Green Smoothie dairy-free so it is easy for your body to digest. Q. Isn’t that too much fruit sugar? If you are diabetic or already sensitive to fruit, then use low-glycemic index fruits, such as blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and green apples. If you are unsure, consult a medical doctor. Q. What is the best blender to use for Green Smoothies? The best blender for Green Smoothies is one that you actually use! Many people think they need an expensive Vitamix or Blendtec blender in order to make Green Smoothies but a standard household blender is fine, as long as you add water and fruit first, blend, and then add the greens and blend again. That way, you won’t destroy the motor.

that the chronic pain and inflammation in his knee had disappeared after starting to drink Green Smoothies. I heard from clients who lost weight finally, after years of yo-yo dieting and another client got pregnant after eight years on IVF… she calls her baby a ‘Green Smoothie miracle’. What is a Green Smoothie? A Green Smoothie is a mixture of water, leafy greens and fresh fruit. The ingredients

Q. Am I supposed to eat only Green Smoothies? No. Eat whatever you normally eat just add a Green Smoothie a day to your diet. Q. I eat meat. Will a Green Smoothie still work? Yes. Green Smoothies compliment any diet or lifestyle, whether you are a meat eater, vegetarian, vegan or raw food vegan. You do not have to give anything up. Q. Can children drink Green Smoothies? Yes. It’s a fantastic breakfast for the entire family and a great start to a healthy day. cont. overleaf

are mixed with water and liquidised in a blender, which breaks down the cellulose structure in the greens thereby unlocking their valuable nutrients. A Green Smoothie is a blended drink and not a juice. Why Green Smoothies? Primarily because of the health results. Greens represent a convenient, essentially noncaloric, nutrient-dense source of otherwise hard to obtain minerals, like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and manganese. When the body starts to get the nutrition it needs, it will naturally start to crave healthier foods, which is a great weight to jump-start eating the right foods for weight loss. As addition, eating fibre in the diet is essential for proper elimination and good colon health. Aim to drink about 500ml (about 17oz/2 cups) of Green Smoothie per day. How to make a Green Smoothie 1. Blend 60 per cent fruit to 40 per cent greens in a blender. 2. Add water and/or high-water content fruits first. 3. Then add greens, blend again. 4. Blend different fruits and greens every day.

5. Try different combinations and find what tastes best to you What to use for greens You can try kale, spinach, Romaine lettuce, bok choy, arugula, celery leaves, alfalfa, clover, parsley, mint, coriander (cilantro), dandelion, Collard greens, watercress, beet greens, or Swiss chard. Avoid using more than two different greens at a time – this will ensure smooth, easy digestion and assimilation. It is important to use variety with your greens over a period of time, so try to buy something different each time you shop. What to use for fruit Enjoy apples, pears, bananas, oranges, papaya, pineapple, peaches, nectarines, grapes, strawberries blueberries or raspberries, depending on what you can find fresh and preferably in season. Watermelon tastes great in a smoothie. You can also use a few pitted dates to add sweet flavour. Use two to three different types of fruit in your smoothie for a pleasant blend of flavours. Banana is delicious because it adds a nice sweetness and thickness to the drink.

Holistic anti-aging

secrets

Holistic beauty therapist Katrina Valente reveals her personal secret weapons when it comes to anti-aging.

A

tlhough I’ve studied and qualified in just about every beauty therapy you’d care to name, when it comes to anti-aging, I remain an advocate of holistic therapies. I’ve always led a pretty healthy lifestyle. I’ve never smoked, I don’t drink that much and have exercised regularly for the best part of 25 years. I’m no saint though, I eat healthily most of the time but sugar remains my main vice. Both from my own experience of how best to hold back the signs of aging, as well as what I’ve seen from thousands of clients, I’ve come to various conclusions regarding the secrets of staying healthy and young in body, mind and spirit. Here are my top tips:

FOOD

First and foremost in importance is what you’re feeding your body. I’m a great believer in detoxing and eating natural foods, raw where possible. I make a fresh juice every morning. Vegetable juices are better than fruit as the latter is high in sugar, natural sugars granted but it’s still sugar!

awakenedbeauty

My favourite mix is carrot, cucumber, celery, beetroot, lemon, apple and ginger. A few hours later I have a protein shake made with vegan protein powder, coconut water, two tablespoons of coconut oil, Chai powder and nuts, all blended together. Grass-fed organic beef is great for the female hormonal system and is high in iron and the good fatty acids that are essential for aging gracefully. Quality, organic beef is very different from a McDonald’s burger so go ahead and eat home-cooked organic beef once or twice per week. Home-made soups are very high in nutritional value, easy to make and delicious at any time of the day. Stay away from starchy carbs in the evenings and fill up on vegetables; your energy will soar.

EXERCISE

I’ve been exercising consistently for about 25 years now. I personally like a firm body so weight-training has always been important to me but my advice is that as we get older we need to change our routines. After two decades of hardcore weight training, I’ve recently been doing the Tracey Anderson workout and I love it! It’s an updated version of the old Callanetics that was all the rage in the 80s. Yoga and Pilates are a wonderful way to keep supple, lean and flexible as we get older. For downloadable workout videos, go to www.tracyandersonmethod.com or www.laurakateaustralia.com for a fusion of body resistance, yoga, fitball, balance and aerobic paced moves.

SKINCARE

This is another biggie for anti-aging. Prevention is better than cure so the earlier you start taking care of your skin, the better. Professional products are the best as they contain more active ingredients that work on the deeper layers of the dermis where all the collagen and elastin is formed. An interesting fact is that whatever you buy over the counter at your chemist or supermarket only has a two layer penetration, this is a government requirement for consumer use but you’re basically wasting your money. To get a deeper penetration of four to five layers, you need a professional product. This addresses the aging process much more specifically for longer results. A good organic day and night cream plus serums, which penetrate easily and are more specific to skin types, are essential for helping slow down the aging process and let’s not forget a good eye cream. The skin around the eyes is much thinner than the rest of the face so it needs to be treated with different creams. In my opinion, professional skincare is a must to fend off wrinkles, pigmentation and sagging skin tone.

27

SUPPLEMENTS

I think the best brand that’s available in Dubai is Solgar. Supplements specifically for anti-aging are Vitamin C Ester, Omega 3, Vitamin E with Selenium, Zinc, B Complex and Sun Chlorella. They’ll all help to balance the hormonal system.

DETOXING

I’ve been doing regular detoxes for many years and I think they’re a must for keeping your system in tip-top health. I just did a five day juice fast with a company called Essentially – the juices are delivered to you each day and you drink a total of six juices a day – one every two hours. Easy! The owner of Essentially has been my client for many years and I know she puts her heart and soul into this business. For detox expertise in the UAE, go to www.essentially.ae, www.artofdetox.com or www.healthybliss.com.

TREATMENTS

Professional treatments are the icing on the cake of anti-aging. My favourite natural treatment is Intraceuticals Oxygen which cont. overleaf

WATER

Water keeps our systems ticking over and prevents toxic build up. Our bodies are 85 per cent water so if we don’t have enough to keep our organs functioning properly, we experience constipation, bloating and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, to name a few. For good quality water, I recommend Jebel Akhdar Natural Mineral Water from the mountains of Oman or Fiji Water. Both are high vibration. Shop online at www.organicfoodsandcafe.com

super hydrates the skin, leaving it lifted and shining. Not all oxygen facials are created equal however. The Intraceuticals oxygen facial is in a league of its own and uses serums and products that keep the skin looking amazing for weeks after the treatment. I seriously love this facial! Of course I would, it’s one that I offer my clients. Go to www.katrinavalente.com for more information. For a strong tightening treatment, I recommend the Radio Frequency facial, after five weekly treatments you’ll see some great results that last for about three months after the treatments. A good alternative for those not wanting to have laser treatment. Go to www.medspa.ae.

MEDITATION

Even if its only five minutes a day. When we live in awareness, it helps us take responsibility for our lives. Listening to the quiet voice within brings peace and acceptance of the here and now; taking each moment for what it is. Living in acceptance gives us freedom to realise our dreams.

We all know who the bad boys are.

ANTI-AGING ENEMIES Here are the culprits who will, without any shadow of doubt, speed up your aging process… Alcohol, sun and smoking You’ve heard it all before so just to further ingrain it on your brain. Alcohol, sun and smoking are the three stooges that will cause the most damage for your skin and liver – all of which makes you older, faster. Alcohol causes significant dehydration so if you must have a tipple, at least alternate it with water. As for smoking, I’ve never understood the attraction of swallowing mouthfuls of toxin-filled smoke. It makes your skin grey and wrinkled, it clogs your pores, makes your hair and clothes smell, gives you bad breath… and lets not forget things like lung cancer, emphysema and other respiratory diseases plus the environmental impact of all those butts ending up in our waterways and oceans. Obviously, cigarettes are hard to kick otherwise no-one would smoke but make the effort to ditch these poisonous sticks. The sun is the biggest factor in premature aging. Too much of it causes skin cancer, moles, dehydration, burns, and aging. My 80-year-old Scottish mother has never laid in the sun and as a result has the most baby soft skin. Pure white with not a mark on it. Although, everything in moderation, we do need Vitamin D from the sun – something that most of us here in Dubai are deficient in. Spend 20 minutes per day outside to get your Vitamin D quota. Junk food Bad food ages you, be it fried food, processed food, packet or powdered food, anything full of sugar, preservatives, artificial hormones, colourings and chemicals. You know this. I don’t need to tell you. These foods clog you up and put pressure on your digestive system as well as fill your body with the articifical hormones that end up in our beef, chicken and fish. Go organic. Lack of sleep Late nights and less than seven hours sleep a night is another way to flick your ‘get old faster’ switch. The hours before midnight are the most essential for energy and vitality so get to bed at 10pm. Caffeine Caffeine in soft drinks or coffee takes 24 hours to get through the liver. It’s addictive and also very dehydrating. Coffee is a big part of Arab culture and genetically the Arab body can tolerate coffee better than a Caucasian person. Again though, a little of what you fancy does you good. If you enjoy coffee, drink it in moderation and make sure it’s as high quality and organic as possible.

Heard of the ‘no poo’ movement? People across the world are dumping store-bought shampoo and conditioner in favour of making their own. Why bother? To free yourself from daily hair-washing; to reduce the toxic load on your body and on the planet. And to save money. Aspen Aman investigates…

W

hy would anyone want to give up shampoo? What’s wrong with shampoo? This is a good question, especially for anyone who’s already using organic and cruelty-free products in an effort to be as ‘green’ and eco-conscious as possible. For a start, the environmental impact of going shampoo and conditioner-free is a compelling reason, since the product going down the drain is just baking soda and vinegar as opposed to a cocktail of chemicals that they need to be removed at the waste treatment plant in order for the water to be released back into the environment – this process takes huge amounts of water, not great when you live in a desert that already has huge challenges with water scarcity. Then there’s the bazillions of tonnes of plastic waste generated by our global obsession with daily hair-washing. Believe it or not, a large no-poo movement is already gaining traction all over the world. These people have opted to forego shampoo and shampoo, instead making their own hair wash and conditioning products from the traditional cleansing ingredients your great-grandma used to use like baking soda – aka bicarbonate of soda, water and vinegar. You’ll spend as much in a year as you would on one bottle of organic shampoo. Apart from the environmental reasons,

many ‘no-poo’ or ‘shampoo free’ converts also believe it’s better for your health. Anything you put on your skin and scalp gets into your blood stream within seconds and from there it can be taken through your organs to every part of your body. That’s why pregnant women stop dyeing their hair – for fear of their unborn child being harmed by colouring chemicals. Why else would you try no-poo? Some no-poo-ers say their hair got healthier, fuller and more vibrant than it was when they removed the artificial (and toxic)

31

chemicals. Some people experience reduction of dandruff, psoriasis and other scalp issues when they go no-poo. Others report improved hair growth and reduced hair-fall since the scalp and hair follicles become healthier when chemical-free. We’re not going to pretend it’s not a challenge initially though. It takes at least 30 days for your hair to adjust to not being stripped of all its natural oils every day so for a while it will still pump out excessive amounts of oil – you’ll get the greasies in other words but it’s ok, there are natural remedies. Of course, if you try no-poo and don’t like it, go back to your commercial shampoo.

NO POO STARTER KIT

So you’re thinking about giving no-poo a try? Here’s what you need: Ingredients • Baking Soda (any brand will do) • Distilled White Vinegar (fine/oilyprone hair) • OR • Apple Cider Vinegar (curly/ dryness-prone hair) • Castile Soap (can buy at the Organic Supermarket)

Basic Equipment • A squeeze-bottle or old shampoo/ conditioner bottle for baking soda/ water cleanser • A good spray bottle for vinegar rinse • Measuring cup and some measuring spoons • A funnel for putting baking soda into squeeze bottle Other Helpful Stuff • A ‘before’ picture showing the condition of your hair • Bathroom-safe (i.e. BPA-free plastic) storage containers for your baking soda and vinegar mixes • Spices like cinnamon sticks, star anise and/or vanilla pods for vinegar rinse • Essential oil (for very dry, not oily, tresses) The Basic Cleansing Formula (your homemade shampoo) With no-poo, your new shampoo is basically just a mix of baking soda and water (filtered or mineral). The ratio is roughly one teaspoon of baking soda per cup (250mls) of water. Remember baking soda is NOT baking powder! You will end up playing around with this ratio in the first few weeks of no-poo. In the first few weeks of de-toxing, oily hair days, you’ll probably want a higher proportion of baking soda to water mixture. Somewhere in about week three, you’ll find that your hair may be trending towards dryness at the ends, which means you need to step down the ratio of baking soda to water. Squirt the baking soda/water cleanser mixture all along the hairline and on the crown of the head. These are the oiliest areas. Don’t squirt the cleanser on the ends of the hair – it will dry them out. Gently massage the mixture into your hair and scalp. You will not get lather but may find your hair as a bit of a slippery feel to it. In all cases, rinsing well is essential. Pay attention to how your hair feels each day during this detox transition

www.awakeningsme.com

page 30-33 No Poo.indd 32

BATTLING THE GREASIES During the inevitable first month detox period of going no-poo when you’re transitioning away from chemical-based shampoo/conditioner, your hair may get very oily. Here are a few tips on how to combat the greasies:

1. Adjust the ratio of baking soda (aka bicarbonate of soda) to water in the cleansing

solution. Start with one tablespoon baking soda to one cup water. If your hair is not getting clean, increase to roughly two tablespoons of baking soda to one cup of water. You should only need to have this higher ratio of baking soda for about two weeks while your hair is seriously detoxing and giving you the greasies.

2. If you are desperate to combat severe greasies during the first week or two, try the

baking soda paste method. Put a quantity of baking soda into your palm, add water and then rub into the scalp – especially around the hairline, over the ears and on the crown of the head where the scalp tends to get oiliest. Let the paste be an emergency remedy rather than your no-poo routine.

3. Add a squirt of all-natural Castile soap in the baking soda/water solution for an extra

shot of cleaning on the first week. You can adjust it to adding the squirt of Castile soap if/ when needed.

4. If you have fine, limp or prone-to-oily hair, don’t use the apple cider vinegar. Instead,

use regular white vinegar. You may find that a ratio of 50:50 water/vinegar works for your hair – or even more diluted solutions of vinegar with water. Experiment until you find what works for you.

5. As a general rule, people with oily or fine hair won’t need to apply the vinegar rinse to

the roots – especially during the greasies detox period. Use a spray bottle to spritz the vinegar rinse exactly where it is needed. Too much vinegar solution equals heavy, greasy hair at this stage of the process.

6. Use the DIY dry shampoo as a touch-up later in the day if your hair is just too oily

to tolerate. Cornstarch is better for light coloured hair while a cocoa/cornstarch mix is better for darker hair. The cornstarch/cocoa is a 1:1 ratio.

7. Experiment: You’ll need to note (mentally or by writing down your notes) how your hair is

reacting to the baking soda/water cleanser and the vinegar rinse – and just give yourself a few weeks to get through this stage by playing around with the solutions and the dry shampoo.

awakenedlife

period. Be prepared to experiment because this is a process of you getting your hair back to its natural state and learning what is best for your hair and preferences. Expert Tip: Use Castile Soap (available at organic food stores in Dubai) diluted in water about once a week if you want to help cleanse the oily hair more thoroughly. In highly diluted ratios, this is a great solution for people with real oily scalp issues during the detox; also good if you have sweaty/dirty hair after a workout. The Basic Conditioning Formula Remember this little rule of thumb: Cleanser on the scalp and roots of hair, conditioner on the lengths and ends. Cleanser on the ends will dry your hair out over time (just like with commercial shampoo, by the way) and conditioner on the scalp will create oiliness/ heaviness (ditto for conditioner). • Fine/Oily-prone hair: Distilled white vinegar and water – in a distilled solution. Try straight vinegar as a rinse, but will probably arrive at a highly diluted solution (mine is about 50/50 white vinegar/water solution) that smoothes the hair shaft after washing but doesn’t weigh the hair down. • Curly/dryness-prone hair: Apple cider vinegar and water – in a distilled solution. Just like the fine/oily-prone folks, you’ll probably end up with a distilled solution but the ratio may be more like 70 per cent vinegar to 30 per cent water. But, like everything no-poo, you’ll be learning what is best for your individual needs by trial and (few) errors. In both cases, finish off your hair with a cool/cold water rinse to close the hair cuticle. This reduces frizz and oiliness. Some people like adding a few drops of essential oil to their vinegar rinse to reduce the vinegar smell and give more moisture to the hair. Do this carefully as a little essential oil goes a long way in your hair. Also, your hair will not smell like vinegar with no-poo. Some people find a faint whiff of vinegar on day one and two but not longer, as your hair quickly adjusts to the vinegar rinse and doesn’t absorb the odour.

CHEMICAL NASTIES IN YOUR SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER A brief overview of some of the most commonly-used chemicals in commercial shampoos and conditioners. • Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, a.k.a. SLS and SLES: These are the foaming agents that make you think your hair is clean even though the foam does not do any cleaning. SLS/SLES have been linked to carcinogenic activity in the body and can also cause genetic mutation, skin/eye irritation and disruption of the body’s endocrine system. • Parabens: This is a whole family of chemicals ending with the suffix ‘paraben’. Parabens have been described as “estrogen mimicker” which means that they send signals to the body that is similar to estrogen, which can lead to hormonal imbalances in women and men as well as increased risk of some cancers. Look for methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben or any other chemical ending in ‘paraben’. • Quaternium-15: A preservative that releases formaldehyde into the body. Quaternium-15 is linked to cancers like leukemia and is also an allergen and can cause contact dermatitis. • Fragrance: While this sounds harmless enough – even appealing – the catch-all phrase ‘fragrance’ or its even nicer-sounding cousin ‘parfum’ covers over 4,000 different chemicals used in personal care products. Many of these are petroleumbased, have been linked to cancer and can cause rashes/allergic reactions and headaches. • Methylisothiazolinone: This unpronounceable ingredient is often shortened to MIT on a label. It has been shown to cause neurological damage – especially in fetuses – and has been linked to Alzheimer’s. For specific information on what toxic or otherwise harmful chemicals are in your favourite personal grooming products, consult the Skin Deep Cosmetics database by the Environmental Working Group at www.ewg.org/skindeep.

E

ach year, air pollution kills about seven million people globally. This is more than the combined death toll of diseases such as malaria and AIDS that are devastating parts of the world. [Source: World Health Organisation.] In China, being the ‘Asian Tiger’ has left people living in cities in which they can barely breathe. In 2010, 1.2 million deaths in China were attributed to air pollution [Financial Times]. The price of that country’s incredible economic growth and industrialisation in recent years is being paid economically and socially. China has realised things must change and is now tackling its environmental challenges with its usual ferocity and is aggressively putting measures in place to reduce its carbon footprint. Here in the UAE, air pollution is responsible for an estimated 850 deaths a year, according to a study commissioned by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi. [October 2009, The National] “The greatest risk is outdoors, where residents are exposed to unhealthy levels of ozone smog and particulate matter,” the newspaper reported. The UAE authorities understand the issues with air pollution and the government is taking steps to minimise the problems by monitoring air pollution and introducing legislation to cut emissions. Progress though appears minimal at best.

FUEL SCARCITY

Eco-friendly cars are a relatively modern concept stemming back to the 1970s when a worldwide fuel shortage resulted in smaller, more economical cars being designed and produced. Through history however there have been other times when it has been necessary to produce more efficient cars, such as after the Second World War, again as a result of fuel shortages. Initially all efforts were driven towards fuel savings due to the scarcity of fuel and its rising cost. The true drive towards eco-friendly cars was not until the late

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2013

page 34-39 hybrid cars.indd 35

1990’s when the impact of pollution and greenhouse gasses on the environment and ozone layer became widely reported. Eco friendly cars today are considered those that are economical, have low pollutant emissions and a relatively low impact on the environment through their manufacture and disposal. Today the manufacture and disposal of most modern cars is vastly improved from previous years, about three quarters of a modern car can now be recycled. This means that probably 80 to 90 per cent of a car’s environmental impact nowadays is as a result of fuel consumption and emissions of air pollution.

... customers see themselves as role models for others, by showcasing the convenience and reliability of modern hybrid vehicles GAS, DIESEL OR PETROL

So what fuel options are there? The obvious are petrol and diesel but nowadays, alternative fuels such as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) are becoming more commonly available for cars throughout the world. In 2012 the Executive Council in Abu Dhabi decreed that 25 per cent of taxis had to be converted to CNG, and a number of filling stations now supply CNG across the UAE. The other alternatives of course are electric vehicles (EV) and many manufacturers are now mass-producing electric or hybrid cars (hybrid cars have a combination of electric motors and internal combustion engines). Standard petrol and diesel cars are fairly well known. They impact the environment by using up diminishing fossil fuels as well as emitting air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC),

35

nitrogen oxides (NO) and particulate matter. Modern petrol cars are fitted with catalytic converters which significantly reduce the CO, HC and NO emissions at the expense of producing more carbon dioxide (Co2). Diesel cars tend to have slightly less impact on the environment than their modern petrol counterparts simply because the cars are more fuel efficient. For cars powered by CNG, emissions of carbon dioxide are similar to diesel vehicles, but outperform petrol. NO and particulate emissions are also significantly less than petrol engines; however, hydrocarbons are higher due to the methane in CNG.

SOMETHING IN THE AIR

In sum, petrol engines in cars, buses, trains and planes emit deadly greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds. This is air pollution and it’s why residents of cities like Dubai live our lives permanently shrouded in a brownish haze of poison-filled air. Overseas, the issue has prompted more uptake of less environmentally harmful vehicles and in some global cities, electric and hybrid cars are now commonplace. Invariably, this is in countries where governments are actively encouraging their citizens to adopt ‘green’ cars via incentives such as grants and tax rebates. For example, in the UK, buyers of electric vehicles (EVs) get a grant of 25 per cent of the car’s value up to GBP 5,000 as well as exemption from car tax and congestion charges. This is just as well for the green car industry because EVs can be up to 80 per cent more expensive to buy than their combustion engine counterparts. In the UAE, we have neither the incentive of high petrol prices nor government incentives therefore – assuming you had the option - buying an EV can be an expensive choice and the running costs of electric vehicles will likely be higher until such time as the initial purchase prices become much more comparable. This is part of the reason why you don’t see electric cars on Sheikh Zayed Road. cont. overleaf

36

awakenedlife cont. from pg35

WHERE’S THE PLUG?

The lack of uptake in the UAE isn’t just about fuel prices though. Another major disincentive is the lack of infrastructure such as battery recharge stations to support electric and hybrid vehicles. Many residents in the UAE live in high-rise flats without access to garaging for their cars. This means that without government-provided or private sector-provided infrastructure, EVs and Plug in Hybrids (PIVs) are limited to those people who live in villas with garaged or off-road parking available. The US and many European countries are embracing the drive towards more environmentally friendly cars and are putting infrastructure in place in larger towns to support EVs and PIVs. Even the UAE has

one such recharge power point near the Financial Centre Metro Station in Dubai.

GREEN CARS UAE

So, for those people in the UAE for whom price and power recharging is not an issue, what range of electric or hybrid vehicles are available? Interestingly, most options are at the luxury or high-end range, with brands like Porsche and Fisker Karma leading the way. This comes down to some simple facts like wealthier people tend to live in villas so there is somewhere to recharge the electric battery, as opposed to high-rise apartment owners. For electric vehicle buyers – as opposed to hybrid buyers - the UAE offers almost nothing. I was not able to find a single

supplier apart from Al Futtaim that offers a luxury hybrid, the Fisker Karma at a price of AED 560,000. The Karma is an extended range EV with the option of a petrol engine to provide power to the electric motor; so it’s more of a hybrid than a true EV. Hybrids are more versatile than pure EVs since they can recharge their batteries from their engines and tend to have a greater range. Many manufacturers now produce hybrids including Renault, Toyota, Nissan, Chevrolet, Ford, Peugeot, Volkswagon, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. Of all these manufacturers, only Lexus and Porsche offer their hybrids in the UAE. Of the rest, only BMW is prepared to special order a hybrid car for a customer.

WHAT IS A GREEN CAR Eco-friendly cars are fuel-efficient, have low pollutant emissions and a relatively low impact on the environment through their manufacture and disposal. In the 1970s, efforts to make cars more fuel-efficient were motivated by the worldwide fuel shortage and its rising cost. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that an environmental motivation was sparked by the realisation of how much damage pollution and greenhouse gasses were doing to the environment and earth’s ozone layer. Today the manufacture and disposal of most modern cars is vastly improved from previous years, about three quarters of a modern car can now be recycled. This means that 80 to 90 per cent of a car’s environmental impact is now a result of fuel consumption and air pollution. Initially it was thought that the environmental impact of producing and subsequently disposing of large volumes of batteries for electric cars would have a significant impact to their environmental footprint. This was widely overestimated and in fact the battery production and disposal only contributes towards approximately 15 per cent of the environmental footprint for the car, a large portion of which is attributed to sourcing and processing the raw materials such as cobalt, nickel and copper. The other aspect of electric cars is the impact of producing the electricity to recharge the batteries when you plug them in. In the UAE, most power plants are natural gas, which produces about half the carbon dioxide and a third less nitrogen oxides than oil and coal-fired power plants. Ironically, the UK and US are two of the countries with the greatest uptake of green cars yet both of them have large numbers of coal-fuelled power stations, therefore significantly reducing many of the benefits for electric vehicles. • Hybrids With both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, the drive can be either completely electric, completely engine or a combination of the two. The batteries can be recharged by the internal combustion engine or, most efficiently, through energy absorbed through braking. Some hybrids can also be plugged into mains supply to charge the batteries. • Plug In Vehicle (PIV) hybrids Cars that can plug into electric charging points to recharge their batteries. • Electric cars Need connecting to electric charging points to recharge their batteries. • Hydrogen Cell cars Powered via an electric motor that’s recharged using a hydrogen cell. New to the market, these are very rare and expensive. The only waste product from a hydrogen cell is water making these extremely eco-friendly, however producing the hydrogen fuel is not!

The resounding reason I was told by the companies regarding why they do not offer a green range was the lack of charging infrastructure available. In 2012, Porsche sold a total of 9,171 cars across the region, of which 192 since 2010 were hybrids. Why do Porsche offer hybrids to UAE customers in contrast to almost all other car manufacturers? Managing Director for Porsche Middle East and Africa George Wills said: “We believe our customers should have access to the entire model range, including our hybrid offers. We don’t follow the general trend, we want to set it. It is important to start building up the awareness and confidence in customers for hybrid models in this region; only through this, the general acceptance will increase.” Wills acknowledged the uphill battle however: “In comparison to Europe, we have less external factors influencing the consumer buying decision, such as petrol costs, tax benefits, emission standards or a well-planned charging infrastructure.”

ECO SHOPPERS

Wills says that most people who buy hybrid cars are well aware of the benefits before they buy. “Some are looking for an alternative to a classic combustion engine to fulfil their

HOW FAST ARE GREEN CARS? A need for speed is no longer a reason to dismiss electric cars. Earlier this year, the current electric land speed record of 328 km/h was set by Britain’s Lord Drayson. The very first electric land speed record of 63 km/h was set in 1898 by Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat.

overall lifestyle decision of creating the least impact on the environment and use available resources in the most efficient way. However, we have also noticed that some customers see themselves as role models for others, by showcasing the convenience and reliability of modern hybrid vehicles.” Wills says he is confident this trend towards greener cars will continue in the coming years although education is needed. “There is a demand for educating the regional audience on environmental friendly drives and eliminate potential prejudices, for example the life expectancy of a battery, high voltage lines in a car and service intervals.” “Our brand is ready for the challenge with an attractive model line-up. There is a lot of talk these days about hybrids in our region but we should not forget that also cars with a standard combustion engine develop further and feature a variety of fuel and emission reducing measures nowadays.”

As hybrid and electric cars become more established elsewhere in the world, chances are the UAE is almost certain to follow. Many road users drive short distances within the cities so EV range is not be an issue. In addition, the UAE’s hot climate offers a massive resource for recharging them roadside if solar power stations are introduced. Harnessing the power of the sun with roadside charging stations that are already being used in other countries as park and charge units seems a viable solution for the region. It would only take a local entrepreneur to accept the challenge of driving the infrastructure and the UAE could be one of the highest users of hybrid and electric vehicle’s in the world thereby vastly reducing its carbon footprint and drastically improving its air quality. The UAE winner – no other manufacturer is pushing the green envelope in the UAE as much as Porsche. In the UAE, Porsche offers the Cayenne S Hybrid, Panamera S Hybrid and Panamera S E-Hybrid. The world’s first plug-in hybrid in the luxury class, the Panamera S E-Hybrid’s fuel consumption is 3.1 litres per 100km and reaches a speed of up to 135 km/h in pure electric drive mode. This year will also see the unveiling of the 918 Spyder, the first ever hybrid super sports car with a total of 887 hp combined from three engines, an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.8 seconds and an average consumption of a mere 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres. THE WORLD’S FIRST HYBRID CAR WAS A PORSCHE Faced with public demand and the challenge of smelly steam vehicles and internal combustion engines, the Austrian Dr. Ferdinand Porsche invented an electric wheel hub in 1896 to power the world’s first front-wheel-drive car. This car had a range of around 50 km/h. To increase its range, Porsche later added an internal combustion engine to spin a generator that provided power to the electric motors. Thus the hybrid was invented in around 1900.

Porsche’s Electromobile

The Lohner-Porsche electric car, powered by wheel-hub motors, caused a sensation at the Paris world trade fair in 1900. The Lohner-Porsche electric car, a “Chaise” with the internal vehicle number 24000, was exhibited as the only Austrian car at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair. A news report at the time described the development of the first-ever transmissionless vehicle as a revolutionary innovation. The electric motors in the hubs of the front wheels had an output of 2.5 horsepower at 120 rpm. The 44-cell, 80-volt rechargeable battery with a capacity of 300 ampere-hours gave the car a range of 50 kilometres between recharges; the maximum speed was 50 kilometres per hour. The slow speed of the electric motor permitted direct drive and installation in the wheel. The motor operated without chains and thus without mechanical power loss. Consequently, the electric motor was extremely efficient and was almost silent during operation. The total weight of the vehicle was 1,205 kg. The car could be braked at all four wheels - by the motors at the front axle and with the aid of a mechanical strap brake at the rear axle.

Ferdinand Porsche

Taken in 1900, Ferdinand Porsche sitting next to the driver of a Lohner-Porsche Electromobile with four wheel hub engines, each rated at 2.5 hp. This vehicle was intended for competition use, and Ferdinand Porsche himself delivered it to the purchaser, E.W. Hart, who lived in Luton, north of London, England.

The basics of

crystal healing If you’ve never understood why all those new age hippie types love crystals so much, Asma Merchant is here to explain the basic theory behind crystal power.

H

ave you ever met a stranger who made you feel happy just being around them? Or had someone’s enthusiasm rub off on you? You’re being affected by their energy field and picking up their vibration. In a similar way, crystals emit an energy vibration that can bring many benefits when utilised properly. Crystals don’t heal your diseases or fix your issues but they assist in amplifying your own energy and accelerating your internal healing process. I think of them as a gang of close friends. Just like our friends, some crystals invigorate and some cheer you up while others soothe you. Also there might be some that you don’t connect with at times. Let intuition be your guide in picking the right crystals for you. Always touch them and sense them before you buy. Still, the choice can be overwhelming and it can all get very complicated because there are so many different crystals, all with differing properties, so in this article we’re sticking to the basic to get you started. Here are some of the most commonly used crystals and what they can help you with…

ROSE QUARTZ

One of the most popular crystals, Rose Quartz is the soft, pretty love guru. Associated with the heart chakra, this pink coloured quartz is known for its unconditional love. She will either help you in attracting the right mate or help you heal from the wrong one. Rose quartz also helps with forgiveness, gentleness, compassion and most importantly self-love. She is the one who pushes us forward when we feel low about ourselves.

Citrine would be the power dressing, money making, successful friend who is all about pushing us into action. Associated with the solar plexus, this yellow coloured quartz is all about making things happen in the physical plane. Citrine helps enhance your personal power, mental focus and creativity.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 40-41 crystal.indd 40

CITRINE

CARNELIAN

We all have that one friend who is so at ease with themselves that they glow with the power. That’s Carnelian for you. This crystal helps you in owning your power yet grounds and stabilises you. It has a warm, joyous and gratuitous energy to it. Linked to the sacral and root chakra, this orange helps in owning our sexuality too.

TURQUOISE

Vibrant and charming yet also soothing, Turquoise is the stone you pick when you have to make yourself heard. Turquoise assists in resolving communication issues and keeps reminding us to speak our truth without fear. Turquoise is also beneficial in protecting against any outside influences.

CLEAR QUARTZ

Muddled and confused? Don’t know where to turn for guidance? Clear Quartz is your best friend. Helps in finding focus and clarity while kickstarting your intuitive abilities. It also aids in your spiritual journey by working on clearing your Third Eye and Crown Chakra. Clear Quartz also assists in amplifying the energies of other crystals.

AMETHYST

The friend who makes you forget your problems, Amethyst is the epitome of peace and calm and is known for relieving stress instantaneously. It also shares qualities with Clear Quartz by assisting in your spiritual journey.

OBSIDIAN

This your nononsense buddy who will bring you back to earth when you are flying too high and at the same time pushes you forward when you aren’t moving. This one friend knows how to keep it real by helping you face what you are denying and unwilling to look at. Also protects you from negative energies.

• Clear using singing bowls • Bury them under soil or in your potted plant • Visualise your crystal under white light with the intention of clearing it It also helps to charge your crystals every once in a while by leaving them under sunlight or moonlight. The next step is to state the intention for which you want to use it for. Pick the right crystal for the job so if you want love, rose quartz, if you want confidence to speak up, go turquoise. The easiest way to incorporate crystals in everyday life is to get small tumbled stones and carry them with you in your purse or your pocket. The crystal needs to be in physical contact with you so it attunes itself to your energy. I like wearing them as jewellery so I got myself a pendant cage that way I can keep changing the crystals as per my mood and requirements. You can buy a pendant cage at www.sparklefairy.com.

41

Some people use crystals in meditation to get specific guidance or they place specific crystals on parts of the body to accelerate healing but that’s getting beyond the basics so we’ll leave that for a future article.

WHERE TO BUY CRYSTALS IN THE UAE? Sparklefairy: Online store www.sparklefairy.com Laughing Buddha: Festival city, Ibn Battuta and Souq Al Bahar Art & Picture Framing: Ground floor, Lamcy Plaza Elements Fengshui: Al Khaleej Centre, Deira City Centre and level one Mall of the Emirates

CRYSTALS AND PHYSICAL HEALING A quick guide on which crystals help with which physical symptoms of disease or discomfort… Amethyst: Headaches, insomnia, stress, overcoming addictions Aventurine (healing stone): Releasing toxins, near-sightedness, skin issues Citrine: Depression, digestive issues, stomach, kidney and liver problems Hematite: Aids blood circulation, increases blood supply Moonstone: Aids fertility, female reproductive issues, balances hormones

How to use crystals

First things first, when you buy yourself a new crystal make sure that you cleanse it in any of the ways listed below. That way you remove any remnant energies from the people who have handled it previously and restore it to its full potential. • Wash them under running water • Keep them in a bowl of salt and water. Some crystals disintegrate or lose colour in water so be wary. • Smudge with incense or sage

AYURVEDA – THE SCIENCE OF LIFE

W

hen our Editor decided to send me for an Ayurvedic massage, I had visions of oil being poured onto my forehead from a pot hanging above. I had a consultation with the in-house Ayurvedic specialist, Dr. Oseela, who asked me a few questions to figure out my constituent or dosha to customise the oils to be used. She also pre-warned me that Ayurvedic massages are medicinal and therapeutic and it might be a good idea to not expect a relaxing and aromatic massage. With all of this information, I was led into a warm low-lit room by Maria, a certified Ayurveda therapist. The first part was going to be a 75 minute long Herbal Soothe massage (known as Kizhi). Now, I was expecting to hold my breath the whole time as I was told the oils can be a bit pungent but in fact I found the smell soothing. It was a heady mix of turmeric and thyme and a lot of different herbs. Maria could immediately tell that I do not go for massages regularly and sit at a desk all day. She worked the kinks out of my stiff neck and shoulders. It was a tad painful but I knew I was in expert hands by the way she worked on me gently yet firmly. She completely took me by surprise when she found an achy area on my foot and asked me if I had stomach problems. Spot on! This was followed by heated herbal pouches being patted all over to release the muscle tension. I quite enjoyed that. By the end of 75 minutes my body was absolutely invigorated, yet my mind was relaxed. On to the next part, which was a 45 minute Shiro Dhara treatment, also called Tranquility. Turns out this is the famous imagery seen everywhere. About six litres of warm medicated

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2013

page 42-43 spa.indd 43

oil trickles through your forehead to mentally relax you. In my case, that didn’t happen. After the initial bliss of releasing tension in my head, I was quite uncomfortable for the rest of the time. Maria was intuitive enough to figure that out and assured me it happened only to a handful of people. Most people fall asleep during this treatment. Apparently the monkey mind of my constituency is to blame. I got about 11 hours of uninterrupted sleep later and my body felt recharged the next morning.

The word Ayurveda is translated as ‘science of life’ or ‘life knowledge’. It is a system of traditional medicine and approach to living that traces its roots to the earliest known civilisation in India, a people who lived in the Indus valley from BC3000 to BC1500. All about balance, Ayurveda is used to both prevent and cure illness and stresses the use of plant-based medicines and treatments. It explains the nature of everything in the universe and teaches us how to live in harmony with the natural world, knowing the connections that we share. Hygiene is a central practice of Ayurvedic medicine, which involves regular bathing, cleansing of teeth, skin care, and eye washing.

WHAT ASMA HAD DONE… Herbal Soothe (Kizhi): 75 minutes AED 490 In this treatment, warm herbal bags are used to massage the entire body to release tension and revitalize the mind. BOUTIQUE WEIGHTLOSS BOOT CAMP, UK AND FRANCE NuBeginings is a boutique weightloss boot camp and health retreat, aiming to help women and men lose weight by learning a new way of thinking about food choices. The NuBeginnings weightloss spa was founded in 2008 by Victoria Willis, after her own lifelong struggle with food and her weight. “I struggled with my weight since I was eight years old. When I first started NuBeginnings, I weighed nearly 300 pounds. I have qualifications in nutrition and exercise, yet I still could not lose the excess weight. Then I started to learn about hypnotherapy and the power of our subconscious mind. I trained as a hypnotherapist and did some subconscious work and it was then that changes in my life took place. I am now less than half the weight I was when I started NuBeginnings,” Victoria said. A fitness vacation at NuBeginnings usually lasts for at least one week. Only nine guests per week are hosted to ensure exclusivity and personal attention. A unique programme combining nutrition, exercise and hypnotherapy is then prescribed for each guest, complemented with workshops and lectures to instill a new way of thinking among the guests. NuBeginnings promises an average weight loss of 10 pounds from a guest’s stay at the boot camp. Choose from two boot camps – a mansion house on the UK’s North Devon coast or a chateau in the French Loire valley. www.nubeginnings.co.uk

But sciences such as geology, astronomy, and anthropology also don’t rely on laboratory testing for repeatable results. Moreover, psi concerns consciousness, which is by definition non-quantitative. “Psi researchers must stop acting like science’s poor relations,” says author Lawrence LeShan, “limiting themselves to controlled experiments such as analysing statistics of people guessing cards being flipped in the next room.” LeShan outlines the principles of carrying out a real study using mainstream science methodology of clairvoyance and precognition; mediumship and spirit controls, and psychic healing. “Psychic research,” says LeShan, “can transform our sense of reality itself to offer a new and more hopeful picture of ourselves and of the world.”

he Tree Hugger and I have been together a couple of years now so by now I’ve met all her friends. She kept me away from the weirdest ones for a while but now I know the truth. Some of her friends see dead people. If the dead people are stuck, her friends try and get them to go through a tunnel. I can’t see the

tunnel. I can’t see the dead people either. Apparently we had one of these stuck dead people in our villa. It kept switching our lights on and off. At least that’s what Tree Hugger said, I wanted to get the electrician in but Tree Huggers friends came round to persuade the stuck dead person to “walk towards the light”. I thought they were all

batty at first but they’re nice enough once you get to know them. Another thing her and her friends go on about is rocks. They call them crystals but they look like rocks to me. We have some huge rocks around the house, Tree Hugger says they do things like get rid of negative energy and fill your heart with love. Back in my army days, we had to lift backpacks full of rocks over our heads and run around an obstacle course. Those rocks didn’t seem to get rid of my negative energy. Nor did the pack of angry, snarling soldiers I was running alongside seem to have hearts filled with love. No point telling Tree Hugger that. She loves her rocks, she wears them as necklaces, rings, and ear-rings and has little bowls filled with polished coloured ones positioned all over the house. “They have special powers,” says Tree Hugger. “Can they get me a cup of tea and a biscuit?” I ask. Tree Hugger didn’t think that was as funny as I did. One particular friend of hers, Sylvia, has rocks all over her house; she even takes them to bed with her. Goodness knows how her husband copes. She talks to them of course – all Tree Hugger’s friends talk to rocks and plants – the difference with Sylvia is that her rocks talk back to her! She says some of them have little spirits living inside them. I know this girl quite well now and apart from hearing voices talking to her from rocks, she’s a normal woman who’s climbed high up the corporate ladder. She’s even met Hillary Clinton. I wonder if Hillary talks to rocks. I guess Bill could fit into that category. Last week I said, “Show me one of your talking rocks Sylvia.” She brought out a clear crystal quartz about the size of her hand. “See, look inside,” she said, “Can you see the little fairy?” No. I could not see the little fairy. “Say hello to her,” said Sylvia. “Hello fairy,” I said to the rock. “Are you alright in there? It’s not too cramped?” If my old Sergeant Major could’ve seen me, he’d think I was stoned.
