C

olour surrounds us. It’s everywhere, in our surroundings, our food, our clothing. It nourishes our senses; we see it, feel it and absorb it. Our minds, bodies, spirits are profoundly affected by it. Colour references are part of our daily vernacular. If someone ‘sees red’, they’re angry and if they’re ‘in the pink’ they’re healthy. Feeling blue means sad, having a black heart is evil while a ‘yellow belly’ is a coward. But what is colour exactly? Scientifically speaking, colour is simply light of varying wavelengths. Each colour has its own specific wavelength and energy that we

absorb through our senses (eyes, skin, smell) as well as through our magnetic energy field (aka aura). In this way, the energy of colour affects us physically and emotionally. Every cell in the body needs light energy and each of the seven major chakras – the energy centres that are responsible for energising and repairing specific organs - resonates with a particular colour.
