NEW U.S. HIGHWAY 30 BYPASS OPENS P HASE I OF 5 P OIN T E CON OM IC RE SP ON SE P LAN IN A CT ION The latest report from Iowa Department of Transportation confirmed that the millions of heavy load trucks, tourist busses, farm vehicles and cars were increasing on the mostly 2-lane U.S. Highway 30 stretch through Tama County. It was more than the pavement could bare safely and efficiently, and November 2010 relief came as the new Tama-Toledo 4-lane bypass opened (with a flyover bridge on the west side scheduled for completion Spring 2011). But the physical road infrastructure is not the only transformation the area will be undergoing over the next few months. With this $82 million dollar infrastructure investment, some investment is also needed to facilitate the healthy transformation of the economic opportunity that would be generated by speeding up and doubling the traffic count over the next 20 years. It is now up to our local business, government and nonprofit leadership (as well as residents) to recognize and effectively build on the new asset’s economic opportunities, and make the necessary investment to translate it into increased economic impact. Here is a snapshot of Phase I of economic development strategies that are being deployed so we can help each other maximize the new economic potential: 1 Strengthen the identity of Tama-Toledo (Tama County’s cities) 2 Maximize impulse buys or detours into our towns 3 Capture intelligence on commercial and industrial real estate with new potential 4 Market the new opportunities that have been created 5 Communicate unique development funding resources Discussion and source references available online: www.tamacountyiowa.org search “U.S. Highway 30”

WHY IS TAMA CO. ECONOMY MORE RESILIANT THAN OTHERS’? National economists report that the recession has bottomed out in 2009, but expect it will take years to fully recover on the current economic path. In Tama County, Iowa taxable retail and service sales echo this but have already returned to levels of 5 years ago. Year over year unemployment (a lagging economic indicator) has also improved to 6.3%. A number of factors have allowed Tama County to not experience the same economic darkness reported by most other places in the US: 1) Being hedged by a healthy ag economy, 2) fiscally conservative industry using current buyers market to invest in new growth, 3) record high new levels of new venture formation, 4) record high new capital investment coming from grants to nonprofits and govt, 5) local government with no long term debt. Full discussion of economic indicators planned in the Tama County Connections Magazine, 2011
