oint yourself in any direction of the compass and you’re bound to

encounter adventure. The towering mountains to our west hold hiking, biking and equestrian trails that lead to streams to fish or float, flowerfilled meadows and aspen groves that turn into golden chains each fall. Just beyond that mountain range is Lake Tahoe, ringed by sunny beaches each summer and ski resorts when the white stuff falls. Eastward is a stretch of Pinenut Mountains, open to the public, a stunning void home to eagles, coyotes, deer and bands of wild horses. Look south, north and any other direction and you’ll find a golf course. Lastly, crane your neck, gaze upward and you just might see a glider silently stitching skies that make this one of the world’s most preeminent soaring destinations. DESIREE DURNER

For more details on these trails, additional routes, rides and events, or if you are traveling light and want to rent equipment for your adventure, please go to VisitCarsonValley.org or stop by our Visitor Center. For locations of trailheads and trails, see map on pages 22-23.

C

D Clear Creek Trail

J Old Sheep Road

Clear Creek is 15 miles long starting at either Jacks Valley Trailhead next to Jacks Valley Elementary School or Spooner South Trailhead. This trail is a partnership that traverses through US Forest Service land, private land, Douglas County trail easements and a Nature Conservancy Conservation Easement.

This area offers about 15 miles of fire roads, a few side trails, and a very long sand wash. You won’t find many challenges here (unless it snows!) but if you stay on the main powerline road it will take you to the old sheep ranch, which has a shady spot by the creek and makes a nice resting point.

E Genoa Trail System

The trail wraps around a large hill with continuous views of the Pine Nut and Carson Range. The trail junction offers a round-trip distance of about 5.2 miles.

Carson Valley Trails Association carsonvalleytrails.org The CVTA is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization working with partners to provide access to public lands through a recreational trail system for present and future generations to enjoy.

K Pinyon Trail This trail system includes 16 miles of nonmotorized trails in the Genoa area. Trail segments include the Genoa Loop, Eagle Ridge Loop, Sierra Canyon and Discovery Trails.

L River Fork Ranch

Pine Nut Mountain Trail Association pnmta.org The PNMTA is a non-profit organization with several hundred members and volunteers. Members are from all parts of the multi-use community and share a single goal: to keep public lands open to multi-use activities. Dual sport and adventure riding areas and information are available at pnmta.org.

A Bently Heritage Trail Explore five miles of hiking trail at Kirman Field where the Carson River winds its way in braided channels, supporting willows and wetlands that sustain many animals and migratory birds.

F Genoa Vista Trail This paved 1.3 mile trail connects 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort to the town of Genoa.

G Jobs Peak Ranch Trail The trailhead is located on Foothill Road, approximately four miles south of SR-207 (Kingsbury Grade), and follows an easement through a private development. The trail is intended for hiking (pedestrian use only). Dogs okay on leash. Distance: 1.5 miles, family friendly, light to moderate, low elevation.

B China Springs Trail

H Johnson Lane OHV Access

About 17 miles of US Forest Service rocky roads and jeep trails can be found at this OHV area. These are not motorcycle trails. You won’t find any single track, but the scenery makes this a good choice for a slow ATV loop, or ATV camping trip.

Miles of sandy, novice-friendly ATV trails as well as several steep hill climbs and play areas. The main staging area is large and flat, with plenty of room for large trailers or RVs. There are no services, primitive camping is permitted, and suitable sites are scattered throughout the area.

nature.org There are two trails at River Fork Ranch, the 0.75 mile East Brockliss Loop, and the two mile West Fork Trail. Both trails are flat, and have relatively easy wheelchair access. The West Fork Trail parallels the West Fork Carson River, connecting Genoa Lane to Muller Lane with panoramic views. There are interpretive signs at the ranch house.

M Single Tree Access Trail This trail into the Pine Nut Mountains is marked by a large tree in the middle of the parking lot. There is a BLM map on the southern end of the lot showing available trails. This area is for non-motorized use only and is well traveled by mountain bikers.

N Switchback Mountain Switchback Mountain offers a variety of offroad trails. Please stop in Topaz Lodge for more information.

O Tahoe Rim Trail – Lake Tahoe C Fay-Luther/Jobs Peak Ranch Trail System The Fay-Luther/Jobs Peak Ranch Trail System offers a family-friendly, 8.8 mile network of linear and loop trails, including an interpretive loop with signage highlighting the history, geography, geology, flora and fauna of the Carson Valley region.

I Mount Siegel OHV Trail This area is mainly rolling hills, sand washes, and a variety of ATV trails with mountain views. There is an OHV info box at the main entrance of the staging area. The main staging area is fairly large with some small jumps and plenty of room for young riders to test their skills.

775-298-4485 tahoerimtrail.org The 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail loops around Lake Tahoe and can be accessed from Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit, with spectacular views of Carson Valley between Stagecoach and Monitor Pass. The trail offers a variety of terrain and challenges for mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians.

great motorcycle ride in the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe area might be all pavement, mostly dirt, or a combination of both. Carson Valley is fortunate to be very close to hundreds of miles of scenic, twisty, uncongested roads. If you are a street rider and new to the area, head out for some of the High Sierra passes. Carson, Ebbetts, and Monitor Passes are all less than an hour’s ride. Sonora, Tioga, and Donner Passes are all within two hours. And the roads to any of these passes are beautiful in their own right. A ride over five of these great mountain passes in a single day is completely feasible. To do it, you’ll ride hard, return tired, and won’t have a lot of time to stop and see the sights, but you will have one of the best days of your life.

If you’re looking for rides on dirt and gravel roads, some of the best dirt riding you’ll find anywhere is in the Pine Nut Mountains, on the eastern edge of the valley. Wide, well maintained main roads with firm dirt and loose gravel surfaces get you into and across the mountains, at any pace. More technical routes will include steep slopes, deep sand, loose rocks, short sight lines, and some water crossings. All of this backcountry adventure is just a short ride on paved rural roads from friendly and affordable Carson Valley hotels and restaurants. If you are hauling dirt bikes, there are several OHV staging areas with plenty of free parking for your truck and trailer. This area offers a huge variety of great adventure rides, whatever type of bike you like to ride, and however you define adventure.

Christmas in the Valley Join us in down-home style for a delightful holiday with tree lightings, concerts, a Christmas market, Breakfast with Santa and the famous Parade of Lights. Shoot! There’s too many to list, but here are a few more: Snowshoe Thompson Celebration, Celebrity Golf, wine walks, farmers markets, movies in the park, car shows, bike races and rides, runs of all measure and some very cool arts, crafts and cultural events. For complete event dates and details, visit our website at VisitCarsonValley.org or call 800-727-7677.

Eagles and Ag review Even if you are a local and drive to see the eagles on your own, you will learn a lot about the agricultural community and their involvement in conservation efforts. In addition, on the tours you’ll learn bird habits and how to identify them, even if you just go to the opening night photo exhibit. V i s i t C a r s o n Va l l e y . o r g

Dining

Bread, beans, salad and lamb, the perfect recipe for making friends out of strangers. Hungry?

Dining in Carson Valley Where you dine can define an entire trip: That place with the unforgettable burger. That scrumptious sandwich. The perfect cup of coffee. The steak that spoils all other steaks for the rest of time. It becomes the taste of your journey. In recent years, Carson Valley has seen an explosion of locally owned and operated establishments elevating the community’s culinary culture by simply turning back to the valley’s roots.

Cafe Girasole In one word: amazing. My husband and I decided to try this place today... We were given friendly service and delicious food. I tried THE sandwich panini and a side of tomato bisque and hubby tried the artichoke and ham panini and the sweet potato curry soup.

Whether it be the granddaddy of valley dining -- the JT Basque Bar & Dining Room with its traditional Basque country cuisine -- or the beautiful overhaul of the old Minden Flour Milling Co., into the Bently Heritage Estate Distillery with its locally sourced water and grains, there are a wide variety of local options for you to find a stellar meal unique to Carson Valley and perfect to satisfy your appetite. There are those that have taken roost in some of the valley’s most historic buildings -- Minden Meat & Deli, the Overland Restaurant & Pub and the Pink House in Genoa, to name a few -- who have put in tremendous time and effort toward revitalizing old structures and using ingredients from local farms to fill out their menus. Gems can be found for all palates and cravings, from the innovative and delicious sandwich and soup combinations at Abby Jo’s Cafe Girasole or straight-forward quality at DST Coffee to ambitious international offerings such as Noemi’s Pupuseria featuring tastes from El Salvador and Guatemala, or Thai Thai with its flavors from the Far East. CV Steak is a great eatery for any occasion. When it comes time to eat during your stay, you won’t have to look far to find restaurateurs proudly at the top of their craft working with fresh ingredients grown close to home and housed in buildings with many years of stories to tell. What will your journey taste like?

Bently heritage estate distillery

ently Heritage Estate Distillery is creating some of the world’s finest single malt whisky, gin, and spirits. Located in the heart of Minden, one of the Silver State’s oldest ranching towns, this estate distillery exclusively uses local grains grown in the Sierra Nevada foothills by its sister company, Bently Ranch.

B

The distillery’s water source is among the purest in the United States, drawn from a natural aquifer at the foot of the Lake Tahoe basin. Bently Heritage itself is a one-of-a-kind destination, operating from a historic flour mill that is being re-imagined as one of Nevada’s greenest distilleries. With its proximity to the rugged beauty of the Sierra Nevada, located near Minden’s charming downtown, and deep connections to one of the West’s first ranching communities, Bently Heritage is a destination for visitors passionate about fine spirits, the environment, and history alike.

Robby S. Chandler, Arizona Historian Inn

Good memories We needed a place that accepted dogs and was in the valley. The Historian was not only very accommodating with our four legged family member but we were all super happy with the room and the fresh bakery on the premises! Which, by the way, served gluten free muffins! This meant a lot as I have Celiac. We highly recommend the hotel and will gladly return here for our next trip to Gardnerville.

Barbara G. Cupertino, CA Sierra Motel I appreciated this motel for my one-night stay in Gardnerville. The lady who greeted me and checked me in was very pleasant. My room was very clean and equipped with a mini-fridge and microwave, as advertised. I got a good night’s sleep there due to the lack of noise. A pleasant place, all round, and I will be happy to return.

Ray G. Tempe, Arizona 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort I have never been to a hot springs resort before, but that’s all changed now. While visiting my daughter in Reno we got the opportunity to stay two days here and I gotta tell you I’m coming back! The staff was friendly and very accommodating and the hot springs, I couldn’t get enough of, just all aces in my book. With a restaurant, cafe and saloon, you can’t go wrong.

Fran M. Las Vegas, Nevada Cottage house at the White House Inn My partner and I recently spent a charming night in the Cottage House of the White House Inn and we were very sad to leave. We had come from Vegas to visit the Genoa Bar and Saloon, the oldest drinking parlor in Nevada. This was quite possibly our favorite stop along the way. Communication was great and they made sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable and feel at home (like orange juice and muffins). We highly recommend staying at the White House Inn. We hope to return one day soon!

A great getaway!!! We stayed on a Sunday night. A perfect way to “get away from it all.” Every staff person we met was friendly and accommodating. Our room was on the third floor. Most importantly it was quiet. My wife used the indoor pool which was large enough and very clean. We ate dinner, breakfast and a dessert in Katie’s which is located in the casino. Katie’s meals are generous, tasty, and very well priced. It’s the perfect getaway location.

Beachmomof2 California Carson Valley Motor Lodge Great place Stayed at the motor lodge with family. Room was nice and clean and staff is really nice and quick. They have great concerts at their venue and Katie’s restaurant is awesome. I would definitely come back.
