University Pathways - 1

Why take the Sydney Institute Credit transfer agreements – pathway to university? your pathway to university As one of Australia’s largest and most innovative training providers, we help nearly 70,000 students put their ambitions into action every year.

Credit transfer is a form of recognition for previous study based on formal arrangements which have been negotiated between TAFE NSW and higher education providers.

If you’re considering higher education in the future, here are just some of the ways we can help you:

Sydney Institute offers over 80 courses which provide an agreed TAFE NSW credit transfer pathway to a higher education qualification.

cc Save time and money. In some cases, the credit transfer you receive for your Sydney Institute qualification can significantly cut the time it takes to earn your degree as well as saving thousands on university fees. cc Recognised qualifications. Earning a nationally recognised diploma or advanced diploma qualification on the way to your degree can help you gain work in your chosen field while you continue your studies at university. cc Invaluable study skills. The research, analysis and study skills you will learn while completing your qualification at Sydney Institute will help pave the way for a successful transition to higher education. cc Practical knowledge. The hands-on skills gained through your TAFE qualification provide a practical foundation for your university studies and will enhance your employability in the field. cc Strong industry relationships. Our strong industry ties and job placement service mean we can help you get work while you study or after you graduate. It also means you can get a feel for the career you have chosen before you opt for further study. With over 800 nationally recognised courses and flexible training on campus, in the workplace, online and via distance learning, we can help you achieve more than you ever imagined possible – including a fast track to your university degree.

Credit transfers can take various forms such as: ccBlock credit. Where students gain credit for a whole year or stage of a university or other higher education qualification for a whole TAFE NSW qualification. It does not depend on completion of any specific units of competency. cc Specified credit. Where credit given is based on completion of the TAFE NSW qualification including specified units of competency which have been mapped to particular components of the university or other higher education qualification. cc Unspecified credit. Where credit is given for components of a university or other higher education qualification, comprising elective or other optional components only. It may be up to the equivalent of a whole year but usually not all of the first year of the qualification.

Applying to university This guide sets out current credit transfer arrangements for courses offered at Sydney Institute. It is important to note that entry to the provider of your choice is dependent on the number of places available and the grades you have achieved in your TAFE qualification. Each application is assessed individually and you must apply for credit transfer when you make your application.

Fast track your degree with special university partnership programs

In addition to agreed TAFE NSW credit transfer arrangements, Sydney Institute also offers several degree programs on-site at our colleges in partnership with the University of Wollongong and Charles Sturt University. Students graduating from selected linked-in advanced diplomas can get up to two years’ credit in these three-year degrees.

Bachelor of Commerce Joint Programs University of Wollongong (UOW) Bachelor of Commerce (Event Management) and Bachelor of Commerce (Hospitality Management) The partnership between Sydney Institute and the University of Wollongong offers students the opportunity to undertake the Diploma of Event Management or Diploma of Hospitality Management at the same time as studying for a degree at the University of Wollongong. You are co-enrolled for 18 months with Sutherland College and UOW Southern Sydney Campus (located at Loftus). During this time you undertake studies at both institutions. After 18 months, you will then undertake full-time studies with UOW to complete the degree. Due to the credit agreement, you are able to complete both qualifications in three years, which sees the UOW grant exemptions from some of their subjects, based on successful completion of the TAFE modules. TAFE also grants exemptions from some of their subjects, based on successful completion of university subjects. In this way, you obtain two qualifications, giving you the practical TAFE experiences that are backed up by more theoretical studies at university, providing you with broader employment opportunities.

Australian Graduate Management Consortium Charles Sturt University The Australian Graduate Management Consortium (AGMC) is a joint initiative of Charles Sturt University (CSU) and TAFE NSW. It offers you the opportunity to study a Graduate Certificate in Management (Professional Practice) that includes an articulated pathway to the Master of Management. Qualifications are awarded by Charles Sturt University with the course delivered by Sydney Institute’s St George College. Graduate Certificate in Management (Professional Practice) Applicants are required to have: ccAn undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or a qualification deemed to be equivalent plus at least two years’ work experience; OR cc A certificate IV or diploma from TAFE or other registered training organisation, plus at least five years’ work experience, including some supervisory/managerial experience and good writing skills. OR cc Substantial experience (at least seven years) in a management position with significant supervisory/ managerial responsibilities and good writing skills. The AGMC program has a number of innovative features and benefits that make it particularly attractive to busy managers who might otherwise be deterred by the constraints of traditional postgraduate study. Visit the AGMC website: agmc.edu.au or email agmc@csu.edu.au for further details.
