We decided a long time ago that we didn’t want to produce just numbers to sell. At MJT we want to raise sound, economical high performance traits in our cattle without sacrificing birth weights or milk. We strive to better these traits on a continuous basis. We feel our commitment to this should help you, the rancher, produce predictable and profitable cattle from MJT genetics. During the late 80’s and early 90’s the tape measure for hip height was used intensely for selecting cattle. At MJT we never focused our attention on height as we were well aware there was more traits to emphasize on than chasing a yard stick. We know the Hereford and Angus breed didn’t gain their popularity for how tall they are - it is their maternal strengths, easy doing, longevity, moderate birth weight and overall structural soundness that established their reputation. The cows can wean a calf crop under almost any conditions and still make you a profit.

He reminded us a lot of his sire “Total”, the type of calf you noticed every time you went to the pasture. Cash was Champion bull calf 2006 Lloyd Stockade Roundup and had the highest rate of gain of any calf in the barn. We sold Cash for 85,000 to Hirshe Herefords in 2008. There was a lot of international interest in him for semen but unfortunately he got a testicular infection and it damaged his semen quality for freezing. We use Cash as a pasture bull and everyone who sees him admires him.

We bought 4S from Lenoard Poholka at the Calgary Bull Sale in 2008. He had been used as a yearling at Lenoards and already had calves on the ground by sale time. We liked his extra length of body, natural muscling and had a good wide foot under him. Our Hereford Genes 2010 Bull was sired by 4S. A good maternal cow family to moderate sized females and excellent udders.

“Magnum” was named Reserve Grand Champion at the 2011 National Hereford Show in Regina. He is an extremely sound, good footed and easy doing herd bull. A true herdsire in our bull battery. His full ET brother “Kilo” - MJT Total ET 332W was named Grand Champion at 2010 Farm Fair International Show. Magnum’s dam is MJT Miss 14H Charisma 228P “Rosie” - now owned by Grabler Herefords - is a female you would like to make a cow herd from. Magnum’s sire is MJT Total 264P that had a 205 weight of 1076 lbs!
When we bought Nitro he was only five months old but it was obvious he had the thickness and frame size we were looking for. His birth weight was 78 lbs. Nitro has produced exactly like I knew he would – thick muscled, good hair and pigment and light birth weights. He was very successful in the Show Ring and was Reserve Grand Champion Bull a The Denver Stock Show in 2011 as a calf. That fall he went on to win Farmfair and Agribition. Nitro has a good set of bulls in the sale and is owned with Hirsche Herefords & Angus and Calvin and Shannon Grabler.

This feature calf in LLBs 2007 sale is an exciting addition to our herd bull battery. Out of a Bando 5175 son, this guy has really good numbers and looks just as good in the flesh. Good topped, thick butted and easy doing all describe this guy. An actual birth weight of 82 lbs. combined with a 1451 lbs. yearling weight (2nd highest of all LLBs calves in 2007) out of a 2-year old heifer proves that this fellow is a real curve bender. Probably the most likeable trait about this guy is that he has that real stout performance that isn’t wasted on frame score. He’s a moderate framed herdsire and should keep the real good producing females coming.
Kurt picked this Kodiak 5R son out of Geis’s sale bulls in 2008 and when Brian delivered him I liked him right away. He has the moderate frame and muscle pattern we want. “Kodiak 5R” himself has stamped his progeny with the consistency of a true herdsire. He was named the “Premier Sire” at the World Forum. A son of 5R’s “HF Tiger 5T” was named World Forum Champion, Supreme Champion in Edmonton and Agribition. We are very happy with the calves off of our Kodiak son “53T”. His females are in production and are herd builders.

Out of our yearling pen we chose two good Kodiak sons to use in our own program. This fella was one of them. We liked his numbers – moderate birth weight and a darn good 205, and his mama was an ABE 9M daughter we though a lot of. His sire group has some pretty impressive bulls in it for sale day! We sold 233X as a two year old to Ron Rude of Youngstown, AB and we neglected to pull hair on the bull for DNA before we delivered him to Ron. The CAA has a strict regulation all bulls used on purebred females must be DNA’d before progeny can be registered. So unfortunately none of 233X’s calves have papers. Ron runs a lot of cows and a lot of bulls so rounding up the bull hasn’t been possible yet. We normally pull hair when we are semen testing and though we were sure we had done it, there was no hair sample to be had at the time I was registering the calves.

“A final write-up” As I sit to write this “blurb” I find myself reflecting and reading each sale welcome from the past 19 years. It was a good ride and we had a lot of fun being a part of the “MJT Back to the Basics Bull Sale”. From the anticipation leading up to each sale, to the after sale party, we can say it was all worth it!
