Welcome

Welcome to this year’s offering of Speckle Park bulls here at JSF. As we get more involved with breeding and developing our Speckle Park herd, many times we have been asked by commercial men and cowmen from other breeds, “What is it about this breed that makes them different and the reason for commercial operations to use the bulls?” We tell them one word...predictability. We have used many different breeds of bulls in our commercial operation. Speckle Park bulls have given us, by far, the most consistent calf crops, even crossed with females of different breeds. Predictability is so important in either a commercial or purebred operation. The performance and efficiency of this breed is so strong.

DAVID & ARLINDA JOHNER Box 52, Maidstone, SK S0M 1M0 P: 306-893-2714 C: 780-205-4630 jsf3@sasktel.net

As the Speckle Park breed moves forward and grows in numbers of cattle along with the breeders, the options get a lot greater. With minimal data to go along with this young breed such as EPDs, we at JSF are taking a bit of a different approach at collecting raw data. EPDs will be a useful tool in the future as the numbers grow. We find more accuracy in numbers. We believe in collecting real data in the ways of how we graze these bulls, Q-select testing and ultrasound data to give you real life statistics. As we all know, we sell our calves by the pound and that is where your dollar comes from. To give you more results, we use the same bulls you will be using in our commercial operation. This year, we are lucky to watch our steer calves grow and develop close to home. This gives us the chance to see them go right to finish and the opportunity to receive our data back right off the finished product. We will collect all that information and have it available for you as well. Thanks everyone for your past, present and future support. We are fortunate we get to do what we love and enjoy meeting all the people along the way. We wish everyone a healthy and prosperous New Year! Give us a call for your next bull purchase or just to talk cattle!

Q-Select Test

Herd improvement through selection by genetic potential Here at Johner Stock Farm we have been using, selecting and testing our progeny and the sires we are purchasing for the Q-select test in both our commercial and purebred herds. The more we can use these tools in our own operation, the more we can can benefit our customers and feedlots that feed our steers and heifers. As we move forward with this test, we see vast improvement on our gains; not only on our calves still on their mothers but even more as they start to develop on feed. There are four parts to the Q- Select test and they all benefit together. Just one thing to remember, they all have the benefits. We have been using Leptin TT bulls as much as we can on both purebred and commercial cows. On the commercial side of the scale, we have seen increased weaning weights on our steers and heifers in the last four years, up to 100 pounds, depending on conditions and optimal amount of grazing. We are also seeing the number of TT progeny increasing year to year on our replacement females, so in turn, better results as we move forward with breeding stock. As you look at this testing, it becomes a tool to use but remember, the naked eye should also play a pivotal roll in selecting as well. The four tests Leptin, CRH, PMCH and 1GF2 all have their benefits. If a bull you like is a CT for Leptin but his PMCH test is an AA the percentages may still be there for that added tenderness you may require on the progeny. The charts you see are guides; all tests have three levels. If you select on the high levels, it just gives you a slightly higher chance of achieving those goals and there is nothing saying the low end of the chart is bad; there is just a slower rate of achieving those goals. At Johner Stock Farm, we have also found that these testings have been a lot simpler to explain to our customers; commercial cattlemen and women make money by selling calves. So they tend to understand the carcass and feeding qualities more so than EBV or EPD.

Union Forage Trial

We have seeded forages at JSF for the past three years. We selected Forage Varieties this year. We seeded two 12 acre plots plus 50 acres into our silage mix. The 12 acres were grazed with breeding pairs through the summer for four weeks. Pairs were moved to promote regrowth. On August 21, 2018, we decided to do a trial run on our purebred bull calves. We needed to determine if we wanted to use the forages for the pairs or our cows after we wean the calves for fall grazing. The following information is what we found. On August 21, 2018, the bull calves were weighed, ranging in age from March 1, 2018 to May 15, 2018. Weight range was 620 lbs. to 320 lbs. 38 pairs grazed 12 acres for 20 days. The calves were weighed again. We saw gains from 40 lbs. to 120 lbs. in those 20 days. These same pairs were moved to a 35 acre piece of straight grass and the bull calves started on whole oat creep feed. They grazed for 15 days. The weight gains saw a decline in a range of 25 lbs. to 90 lbs., still not a bad gain in only 15 days. We moved again to the forage regrowth plot for five days, then onto a 45 acre pasture of grass that had not been grazed all season. They spent 17 days grazing there, with whole oat creep feed for the calves. For the last five days of the 22 day cycle, we placed silent weans in the bull calves. The bull calves were weaned to establish the October 16, 2018 weights. The calves now ranged from 220 days to 123 days old. An age spread of 100 days of age.
