Welcome to the 26th Annual Everblack Bull & Female Sale. I don’t know what to say about this cattle market. Some days are “crazy good.” Other days are just okay. I guess volatile is the new normal. The best you can do is top the market the day you sell. That’s why we all buy the best genetics we can afford. A bit about our program… We calve a few cows January to March to get some yearlings for our sale. The remainder of the herd calves from mid-April to mid-June back in the hills with very little supervision. No yearlings are sold privately which gives us a nice set of two-year-olds that aren’t picked over. January to

March calves are weaned the end of September. April and younger calves are weaned the end of November. Weaning weights are actual, not adjusted. Our bulls to use on heifers are the result of mating calving ease bulls to low birth weight cows. This gives us calving consistency on both sides of the pedigree. Again this year we are bringing you a good selection of bulls. Stout, rugged bulls for your cowherd. Easycalving bulls for your heifers. All are sound, semen tested, and guaranteed 100%. Everblack Angus Work Ethic Yep, our cows work hard for a living. They are a swath grazing, corn stalk chewing, snow licking set of mamas. Come spring, our mid April to mid June calvers are gettin’er done out in the pasture with very little supervision. Funny how important good udders, easy fleshing, and mothering ability are with this type of program. Few breeders of any breed can state the record of hosting a quarter century of bull sales annually. Established in 1965, the Gibson Family are pioneers and builders of this great Angus breed of cattle. As we start the next quarter century, it begins at the Everblack farm, south of Vermilion, a new venue for this sale… but what has not changed is the strength and quality of the bull pen.

The large cow herd with a diverse genetic base allows the program to offer a stout, uniform set of seventy-five two-year old bulls for the big pastures… bulls that can cover more cows and fit our Western Canadian terrain and conditions. Packed full of performance, the bulls are athletic, hairy with plenty of testicle and offer that calving ease dimension. As always there are a large number of sleep easy bulls bred and designed to excel in the heifer pastures. The yearlings compliment their two-year old counterparts and are sons of the new genetics brought into the program. The heifers selling are selected from solid, predictable cow families that have built this great herd. Ernie Gibson is a “common sense” cowboy…. he knows what it takes to get the job done simply because he has learned from experience over the past half century. open heifers Selling Choice We couldn’t decide which one to sell, so you tell us. Two broody, big-bodied heifers out of a very successful flush. Sired by the Vision bull that topped the Peak Dot sale at $55,000. He has worked well for us, producing attractive, easy-fleshing offspring. We think a lot of the dam, 65P. The first cow we have ever flushed, she gave us twenty-three eggs on her first try. Sound and very fertile, she’s still going strong at fourteen. Nice production record with four daughters retained in our herd, three daughters at the top end of the Northern Select Sales, and two sons through our bull sales.

We call him Hi Test because 22W topped the Lakeland College bull test. He was not only the highest-gaining Angus bull, but also the high gainer over all breeds. His sire, Net Worth, has been the dominant sire for muscle and mass throughout the past decade. Rob Holowaychuk was a fellow cattleman, our sale manager of many years, and one of those special lifelong friends we count ourselves lucky to have. Rob (and his team) contributed significantly to our business, and we always enjoyed our time spent together at cattle sales, family weddings, reunions, or when he’d stop in at the farm for a visit. We dearly miss our conversations with Robbie, as they were guaranteed to bring thought, perhaps a counterpoint or two, and best of all, some laughter.

Doug Arthur was our beloved brother and uncle. Doug spent many years at the farm working with us to seed, harvest, fence, and take care of winter chores, among the multitude of other ranch tasks. Doug was the first to stand in when we needed an extra hand two Decembers past, and we will always be grateful. Lunchtime in the shop has us missing his comedic relief, along with our daily update from what he’d learned listening to Talk Radio, or from driving around the countryside to see what the neighbours were up to.

BULL WARRANTY

We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a nonsatisfactory breeder, the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day.
