As I write this it is minus thirteen inside the calving barn and double that in the yard, calving is going well with the calves having very little trouble with the temperature. It always amazes me that from soaking wet they pop up and suck and don’t look back in the frigid temperatures. It makes me feel somehow deficient as I shiver my way around the yard. Next year’s bull crop is looking very promising, I think that they will be a great match for the strong set of bulls that we have on offer this year. With many of us having endured some pretty radical swings in the cattle business for the last dozen years it is encouraging to see the current market. We had some heifers on feed here for our meat program and I needed a pen, so we sent them to town a few weeks ago. It is quite a nice change to see 1200 pound heifers bring $1525. Likewise with old bulls nearing a buck, there will be a few that will be “upgraded.” We have been raising cattle here for 80 years and, as usual, we continue to raise them in a similar environment to that of our customers. Our cattle travel 40 miles from home in the summer and climb to 7500 feet in elevation. You will notice the weaning dates on the bulls are not until the end of October; this is when the snow or the wolves, as has been the case recently, drives the cattle out of the alpine. Of course they fancied the heifer calves and were looking pretty “athletic” by the time we got them weaned. They have developed nicely though and I think you will find them in excellent condition to go to work. EVERY cow here has taken a calf to the range every year and come home to be in calf to our short breeding season. We strive to produce cattle that are trouble free and efficient. We pursue carcass excellence through ultrasound testing and our own carcass program. These cattle are not pampered. It is difficult to find them from May until October and we never mind creep feed them. We grow the bulls over winter to be ready to work for you, not to be ready for slaughter. We have a larger group of black bulls this year that I am sure you will enjoy. They have lots of hair, are bred to be easy calving, and are thick and sound. The Red Simmentals are consistently strong from end to end. The Red Angus bulls this year are primarily sleep at night heifer bulls, made right and still with enough jam to produce growthy calves. All of the bulls are backed by our time tested guarantee. We live in a big province and enjoy customers from end to end. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVD and Leptosprirosis. All calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVD, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. At weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding. In late fall, all cows, bulls and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites. As a further assurance of herd health, all MCC bulls in the sale have been tested and found negative for persistent infection of the BVD virus. All bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow. Ian and Anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Rockstar or “Fox” as we call him is a bull we bought from R Plus in Saskatchewan for his calving ease and carcass traits. He had 17.5 inch ribeye, triple A marbling and measured 41 cm. at eleven and a half months of age and, as a bonus, was out of Marlin’s favorite old cow. Fox remains in the top 1% of the breed for both ribeye and marbling. We own both Fox and Downey together with our good friends and farm help the Pawloffs; they use them on their commercial herd as well with great success.
106Y or Downey as we call him was the $17000 high selling bull out of their sale in Manitoba. He is a son of the great Wheatland 680 S sire and has certainly proven himself here. He is our “go to” calving ease bull, his calves are born with short gestation. We used him on all of our black purebred heifers last year and have 15 calves on the ground so far this spring all born unassisted. His calves have tremendous hair coats are very sound and correct. Downey has six sons in the sale; lots 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 and 13.

118Y was a tremendous calf that we raised, he is out of an elite cow in our program that raised six keeper bull calves in a row and finally had her first heifer calf this year. He weaned at 858 pounds and wouldn’t quit, gaining over 4 pounds a day all winter. He has 5 sons in the sale selling as lots 40, 44, 49, 51 and 52.
MRL 26X - We bought this stout Economy son out of McMillen’s 2011 sale. He was the 2nd high seller of the Red Angus bulls, he has a 78 pound birth weight and his two year old dam weaned him at 860 pounds. We have used him on heifers for three years now and we couldn’t ask for better. As he did himself, his calves also have very good growth.

ERIXON POWER PLAY 102Y Where to start, Power Play has quite a story! We knew that he had a lot of friends sale day so we partnered with Spring Creek Simmentals and Black Sands to own him, he was the high selling red Simmental at Erixons sale at $17250 and he and his four embryo sibs averaged $10000. His dam 2P has produced the Agribition 2009 Grand Champion Female and again the Reserve Senior Heifer Calf Champion at CWA 2012 she has numerous progeny working in many top programs across the country. Two of the feature bulls in Spring Creeks sale are Power Play sons this year and our sale will be no exception as his calves are front end. Power play is pictured here after breeding 50 cows as a two year old, he is a tremendously easy keeper and certainly a valued asset to our program. His sons sell as lots 19,20,22,26,27 and 32.
3Y is another home raised bull that we have been using, primarily on heifers but cows as well. He was born at 72 pounds and weaned at 820, calves incredibly well and has tremendous feet and legs. His eleven-yearold dam and thirteen-year-old grand dam are still here and going strong.

We are seeing growing optimism in the cattle market, making it important to choose bulls to fit your program. We are again bringing you a select group of Angus bulls to fit your needs. We produce some bulls that have been bred for heifer bulls and others that have a little more power for your cows, yet still providing ease of calving.

These bulls have all been vaccinated with Express 5 and Fermicon7/Somnugen as well as recently receiving pour-on Ivomec. Before the sale the bulls will be semen tested and evaluated for soundness.
