The 2013/2014 academic year tested our community as we dealt with the death of a student, staff changes, and a deficit budget. From adversity comes purpose – an examination of what we hold dear; a commitment to work together for the betterment of our school and surroundings; an awakening to moving into our future. As we launch into the accreditation self-study and school-wide strategic planning, the challenges of the past year have strengthened us for the years ahead. The Board of Trustees expresses its gratitude to all who contributed in so many ways to the Sacramento Waldorf School.

Administrators’ Statement 2013-14 was a poignant year. With a senior dying by suicide in the early fall, the school chose to examine the many intricacies of the program. We began to see ourselves more as a whole school. The Administration, the Board of Trustees, and the College of Teachers worked diligently to foster communication and healing for the entire community.

During the year, we developed our High School International Student program, the Lower School Remedial Support Program, and the Early Childhood Department’s nature exploration. With our community, we have many terrific resources and continue to have a dynamic program because of the diversity and generosity that defines it. Julie MacArthur, Lower School Coordinator Marcela Iglesias, High School Coordinator Paul Carlson, Administrator

College of Teachers’ Report College of Teachers

The College of Teachers leads the pedagogical and spiritual life of the school. College of Teachers members are experienced faculty and staff who offer this extra commitment to the school. The College of Teachers met regularly with the Board of Trustees to discuss the administrative structure and to maintain open channels of communication. Each meeting begins with study. In reconnecting to our purpose, the College continued studying Towards the Deepening of Waldorf Education: Excerpts from the Work of Rudolf Steiner Essays and Documents. We have found the book to be especially useful to help guide us through the emotionally challenging 2013/2014 year. Continuing the College’s review of school-wide programs, Movement, Math, Eurythmy, and Early Childhood were discussed and presented. We continue re-enlivening the curriculum to meet the needs of children today, guided by the indications of Rudolf Steiner.

Treasurer’s Report Sacramento Waldorf School had a budget deficit of approximately $35,000. This cash draw was paid from cash reserves of approximately $650,000. Of note, this year we paid down our long term debt by $237,000 and we hired for the first time an investment advisor to manage our quarter of a million dollar endowment. Craig West, Board Treasurer

Each year the Guild coordinates Harvest Faire, an event that brings our school and the community-atlarge together for a day of fun. Once again, Harvest Faire 2013 was a tremendous success raising more than $12,000. These funds support the school in numerous ways, whether it’s contributing to a facility need, paying the fees for guest speakers, or buying supplies or equipment for special programs. All SWS parents are members of the Parent Guild and are welcome to attend the monthly meetings held in the school library.

The SWS Parent Guild helps to foster the school’s sense of community through a variety of good works. Parents’ generous offering of skills and talent are channeled by the Guild into volunteer support for hospitality at many school functions, faculty/staff appreciation luncheons, and coordination of the school-wide lost and found.

2013/2014 Waves Boosters The 2013/2014 season was an exciting one for the SWS Booster Club. We saw growth throughout our sports program with the addition of high school and middle school mountain biking teams, and a middle school baseball squad. The number of student athletes participating in our sports programs increased, as did Booster Club membership. All of our teams made strides during the course of their season, including playoffs and two league titles – CrossCountry and Ski Team – and the future looks bright. The Booster Club supported these efforts with sales of t-shirts and stadium cushions, as well as membership dues. Thank you for supporting our student athletes! Go Waves!

Our 2013/2014 school year was filled with festive fundraising and community-engaging initiatives. A mid-year change in development leadership was bolstered by an earnest group of volunteers who enthusiastically shared their wealth of talent, wisdom, and willingness to lend a hand. Through the cultivation of new and returning volunteers, development began reweaving the thread of giving and volunteerism throughout the community. Three key development events benefited the school both financially and communally:

Thank You to Our Donors PHOTO BY DANIEL MACDONALD

Once again our generous community came together with a hearty spirit of giving. Donations and financial gifts of support came in from current parents and grandparents, our alumni and their families, and current and former faculty and staff. Every gift is greatly appreciated and enables our school to continue preparing young people to meet and fulfill their destinies through a Waldorf education. We offer our sincerest thanks to every contributor. Names in Bold gave $5000 or more; Bold Italic gave $10,000 or more
