Stockholm, 1981. A man convinces his husband to go with him to a sauna to get new sexual experiences with other men. The man finds the sauna to be a safe place where he can explore his deepest desires. But even in paradise there are rules that you have to obey.

We find ourselves in an extravagant garden in Ouagadougou. The French Ambassador’s wife dreamt about becoming a famous opera singer. Instead, she is now using the singing as a ventilator to survive her seemingly privileged life surrounded by workers. This film raises questions about power structures, class, intersectionality, post colonialism and feminism in a poetic, subtle and seductive way.

The male genius disappears into another world of creativity and inspiration, he sits isolated from the world for days and through pain creates the perfect Art. But what happens to the artist when her body starts working for someone else, someone much bigger than the Art?

Excess Will Save Us

The Camera Obscura (latin for Dark Chamber) is an optical device that led to the photographic camera. It consists of a box or a room with a hole on one side. This film is a reconstruction of an event that took place near the border of Austria and Hungary in the Summer of 2015.

An obsessed local outcast enlists the help of a love-struck youngster to attract the attention of a clueless hairdresser.

Elsa has not slept a wink for thirty years. Early one morning when she’s sitting at the kitchen table, she finds an unwelcome guest underneath her sofa. The creature turns out to be none other than the Night itself. Elsa tells it of her life, and of the death of her best friend – an elephant named Olaf. The Night accompanies her on a moving journey that tells the story of an extraordinary friendship. Finally the Night carries her – sleeping – through the town in its arms.

In a small village of the North of France, an attack alert has been set off due to the combination of two events: the beginning of the dove hunting season and an argument between drunk Polish workers.

Everyone thinks Alice goes too far but she doesn’t give in to group pressure. Johannes gets curious about Alice’s new side and together they discover something new about themselves.

Krister and Kristina’s marriage is crumbling. All the petty annoyances of their everyday life have eroded their relationship. They seek counseling, but it just might be too late to cure the infection that is tearing them apart. The Infection is a film in the spirit of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage, spiked with a dark sense humour.

The neon signs of the Psychics cuts through the darkness. Beckoning, like temples of a secular religion promising guidance through the confusion that is life. A lost soul in a strange post-consumer empire, stripped of inhabitants, a society where everything is suspended in limbo. In search of belonging. To be defined is to be erased, a new beginning.

A married, openly gay teacher in Wales faces the choice of betraying his family or his core values when his older sister asks him to step back into the closet for her wedding in Turkey.

A poetic short film about the fear that religious doctrines can create in children growing up in religious homes. About children’s exposure to, and difficulty of dealing with, abstract religious messages at a young age.

THE FILMS

In 2013, the Swedish Film Institute initiated the work of digitizing the Swedish film heritage – everything from silent era films to films from the 2010s, including world famous classics and lesser known gems that are worth discovering or rediscovering. In our “Classics” series we present recently digitized films that we want to offer to the international audiences. In addition to providing new ways of accessing Swedish cinematic history, our hope is that the Classics series will generate an interest and a curiosity around the Swedish film heritage. The films are available on DCP, with English subtitles. We also offer previews,

digital still images and posters, as well as text materials available along with the films. For the spring 2019 we especially present A Swedish Love Story – the debut of Roy Andersson, Duet for Cannibals, celebrating 50 years!, by the writer, filmmaker and activist Susan Sontag, and Seppan, Agneta Fagerström Olsson’s children’s film – an immigration, class, and coming of age story taking place in a Stockholm suburb inhabited by immigrants from all parts of a war-ravenged Europe. We also present three Swedish shorts classics. www.filminstitutet.se/digitized-films Contact: lova.hagerfors@filminstitutet.se
