VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR Tax-Aide Program

We are looking for compassionate and friendly volunteers to join our team for the upcoming tax season. We'll provide the training and support to help you learn new skills, and you'll get a great feeling from helping those in need. Each year over 35,000 Tax-Aide volunteers serve over 2 million people nationally. Last tax season, volunteers filed returns for over 200 taxpayers in the Ridgecrest area.Tax Counselors work with taxpayers by filing tax returns. Client Facilitators welcome taxpayers, help organize paperwork, and manage the overall flow of service. Technology Coordinators manage computer equipment, ensure taxpayer data is secure, and provide technical assistance to volunteers. We have a big demand for bilingual speakers in all roles. Please come to an Orientation Meeting to see if this is something you are interested in. You will have the opportunity to hear and talk about which volunteer position is best for you. All positions will attend additional training sessions.Some computer skills are required but training will be provided by experienced Tax-Aide volunteers. The program operates from February 1 through April 18 with a minimum service commitment of 10-12 hours per week. Training (40-80 hours) will be from December to February and is mostly online with some in-person help. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage. Students may earn college credit.This year we will be able to interview taxpayers in person in Ridgecrest while complying with Covid protocols. If you are interested in volunteering,

Pumpkin Pie

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons canola oil

1 tablespoon butter, melted

2 to 3 tablespoons cold water

filling:

1 large egg

1 large egg white

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon each ground allspice, nutmeg and cloves

1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin1 cup fat-free evaporated milk

Whipped cream, optional

In a small bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt. Using a fork, stir in oil and butter until dough is crumbly. Gradually add enough water until dough holds together. Roll out between sheets of waxed paper into an 11-in. circle. Freeze for 10 minutes. Remove top sheet of waxed paper; invert crust into a 9-in. pie plate. Remove the remaining waxed paper. Trim and flute edge. Chill.

Place on an ungreased baking sheet; bake at 375° for 6-8 minutes or until edges are very lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack. Top with whipped cream

Booth Construction

All spaces will be taped off to indicate the area for each exhibitor’s booth. Pre-constructed exhibits or booths will need to fit in the space provided. Booth space is 10 feet by 10 feet.

Refunds

No refunds will be made if space engaged is not used or used only part of the time. No refunds will be made within one month prior to the show.

Installation

Booths must be set up and ready for opening. *Must provide proof of status. by 10a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023. Exhibit Space Care

Each exhibitor must keep spaces clean and exhibits staffed and in good order. All exhibits must be ready for display by 10a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Unoccupied Space

If the exhibitor fails to occupy space contracted for by Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 10a.m. or fails to comply in any other respect with the terms of this agreement, The Daily Independent & The Swap Sheet shall have the right to use such space in any manner without releasing the exhibitor from paying the sum agreed upon in this contract.

Limitations

Exhibits shall be so installed that they will not extend beyond the space alloted. Distribution of printed matter, souvenirs or other articles must be restricted to the space of the exhibit. Any part of the exhibit that is over eight (8’) high must have written approval for installation by The Daily Independent & The Swap Sheet. No individual public address systems or highly flammable materials will be permitted on the premises. Music or audio-visual sounds must not be audible more than five (5’) feet from booth.

Total Investment:

Exhibitors are to remain within the confines of their booth and are not to work in public aisles.

Teardown

Exhibits shall not be taken down prior to 5pm, Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Liability

The Daily Independent & The Swap Sheet cannot guarantee exhibitors against loss or damage of any kind. Space is leased with the understanding that the exhibitors will hold sponsors harmless from any or all liabilities from any cause.
