The Dragon Innovation Partnership (DIP) was established in 2008 as a collaboration between the former Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea University and University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the Partnership aimed to assist businesses and organisations in reaching the relevant expertise and resources from the universities and help in facilitating the development. The strength of the Partnership lies in the diversity of expertise and resources across the universities in South West Wales, as well as the synergy of knowledge they share. Access to Masters (ATM) The project enables businesses and predominantly SMEs to access Masters level students to assist in research and development, by linking taught Masters Projects with needs of businesses. Advanced Communication Technologies (ACT) The ACT project helps businesses in Ireland and Wales to better understand the opportunities that social media, the internet and other modern communication technologies offer. ACT offers a range of fully funded workshops (such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc.) and a 1-to-1 targeted support programme to help businesses with individual challenges (such as bespoke social media strategies, website improvements, etc). These fully funded workshops and 1-to-1 sessions are only available to businesses in the Welsh regions of Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire and the Irish counties of South Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford and Waterford. The ACT project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Ireland Wales Programme (INTERREG 4A). Architectural Glass Centre (AGC) The Architectural Glass Centre (AGC) is the commercial arm of the Welsh School of Architectural Glass at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea. The Centre offers a comprehensive range of services covering most aspects of commissioning, manufacturing and installing decorative glassworks. The AGC may act as commissioning agent, project manager, consultant or undertake research and development for architectural glass projects. Additionally the AGC organises workshops, master-classes and events to assist in the training of practicing glass artists.

ASTUTE Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies (ASTUTE) aims to enable the manufacturing industry in West Wales and the Valleys to grow by adopting more advanced technologies, and at the same time improve its sustainability by reducing its environmental impact. This will be achieved by a Partnership of Universities throughout Wales that will harness the engineering, science and business expertise within them to improve the economic prosperity of the region. The ASTUTE team can assist companies throughout the different stages of the manufacturing process with business advice and assistance or applied industrial research in:

Since the start of the project in May 2010, ASTUTE has already worked successfully with a number of Welsh companies in different sectors. “The collaboration between Calon and ASTUTE resulted in a significant reduction in the time taken to evaluate potential designs. BEACON: Bio Refinery Centre of Excellence BEACON will build on research already underway at Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) to produce fuels from energy crops such as high-sugar grasses like rye. It will also enable Swansea University to focus on developing their prior expertise in using bacteria and fungi to digest, or ferment, plant matter within the bio-refining process.

l Promote science excellence from Wales BEACON is led by Aberystwyth University in collaboration with partners at Bangor and Swansea Universities. It is backed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.

Bangor University will build on work to develop new materials from plants which can be used to develop innovative products, having recently discovered that compounds found in some local plants can be used to control problems like potato blight. Centre for NanoHealth (CNH) Established in 2009, the Centre for NanoHealth combines nanotechnology with medical science to provide opportunities to develop innovative solutions to the world’s challenge of detecting the onset of diseases at the earliest stage. Novel devices, processes and sensors can be designed, manufactured, functionalised, tested and evaluated for point of care, near–patient and in vivo applications.

Cerebra Innovation Centre Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC) is a bespoke product design service offered by national charity Cerebra to its members. Many of the products designed serve as daily living aids. CIC has made a tremendous difference to the lives of many children with neurological conditions across the UK. The unique strategic vision for CIC means that they are able to respond to individual requests for help and can make small numbers of bespoke products that focus heavily on individual requirements, aesthetic attributes and inclusion into society. Some of the products in the portfolio have been commercialised in partnership with third party manufacturers under licensing agreements and many more are planned.

CIRIC The Creative Industries Research and Innovation Centre (CIRIC) is a hub for research, learning and IP development. Over the last eight years CIRIC has worked with over 500 businesses, successfully securing investment and creating jobs in Wales.

CIRIC has been successful in leading and managing a series of European funded projects and over the last eight years, has supported R&D and knowledge transfer activities, delivering innovative creative industry initiatives.

Creative Bubble University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea is making use of a city-centre commercial unit to create economic and social impacts for the city, through the arts, in an innovative new project with Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) called: ‘Creative Bubble’. Creative Bubble is based in a disused commercial unit on Craddock Street. It provides an area where students can develop and plan creative ideas that use the city centre as a canvas for both creative practice and entrepreneurial and business developments. Students from different disciplines are collaborating to produce new and distinctive work that engages with the communities and businesses in Swansea. The project highlights the University’s aim of supporting cooperation between companies and institutions to develop initiatives designed to benefit economic and social development with the region.

Cutting & Fabrication Centre The Knowledge Transfer Centre in Cutting and Fabrication Technology of composite materials and Non-destructive testing (NDT) is part of the knowledge transfer activities at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea. With facilities to manufacture components in both traditional materials (metals / plastics) and composite materials, linked with the university’s facilities in NDT, this new development provides a powerful resource for the manufacturing industry. The centre has particular experience and expertise in near to market product engineering and testing, with a track record of research that has direct economic benefit to Welsh industry. eHealth Industries Innovation Centre (ehi2) ehi2 works with companies in creating new, innovative ehealth products and services with global market potential, working closely with the NHS and other health systems to identify needs for new products and services. It helps businesses to test, adapt, improve and evaluate products and services in a safe and reliable environment to maximise their competitive advantage; advise and assist companies and where needed, facilitate access to clinicians, academics, NHS, and national NHS IT and ICT programmes. The centre is home to the Welsh Node of the National Virtual Incubator (NVI) with provides excellent networking opportunities through its programme of free hybrid events and mentor sessions.

GO Wales Graduate Opportunities (GO) Wales offer a variety of services to help recruit and retain graduate staff. You could benefit from offering work experience to a student or graduate, take advantage of the financial support for recruiting a graduate through a work placement or advertise a vacancy free of charge. GO Wales also offer SMEs in Wales a Graduate Training & Development Fund to help with the cost of training graduates. Thousands of businesses in Wales have already benefited from the GO Wales programme Melin Consultants, based in Llanelli had been trying to recruit three specialised positions for months, but had great difficulty in doing so. Using the Dragon Innovation Partnership and their sound knowledge of University based expertise; they were introduced to GO Wales. Institute of Life Science The Institute of Life Science (ILS) is Wales’ premier purpose-built medical research and business incubation facility. It is a partnership between Swansea University, Welsh Government, the NHS, and other business partners. The vision for the ILS is to advance medical science through multi- and interdisciplinary research and innovation for the benefit of human health, and to link those benefits to the economy by encouraging interaction with other organisations in a spirit of Open Innovation. The first phase of the ILS vision delivered a state-of-the-art building housing over 200 professional specialists in medical research, working across four floors of wet laboratories and floor for business incubation and devices laboratories to facilitate technology transfer. It also brought a High Performance Computing infrastructure through an effective collaboration with computer giant, IBM. The second phase of the vision boasts a further 6000 square metres of facilities to build capacity, expertise and infrastructure for the benefit of the health and wealth of the nation. ILS Phase Two houses a range of fully operational business incubation units, a Clinical Research Facility incorporating jointly-located clinical trials and imaging suites

working in close collaboration with the NHS and Siemens; NHS Informatics Research Laboratories; The Farr Institute - CIPHER; High Performance Computing (HPC) in collaboration with IBM and Fujitsu; and the Centre for NanoHealth, an open access R&D facility dedicated to the advancement of health care through the application of nanotechnology. Current developments include the Data Science building, scheduled to open in Summer 2015, which will create a world-class centre in administrative data and ehealth research, innovation, training and development through our existing powerful, robust, state of the art data linkage and data access facilities. This development is made possible by funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Welsh Government. The ILS is partly funded through the European Union Convergence Funding Programme and has a special interest in assisting Welsh SMEs.

Materials Advanced Characterisation Centre The Materials Advanced Characterisation Centre (MACH1) offers a wide range of material and measurement capabilities to deliver multisample, high-throughput testing of advanced materials to industry. The MACH1 centre has been established to support companies by providing the capabilities to apply such techniques to metallurgical samples, including novel alloys, providing a complete set of properties for a given material. High-throughput techniques are being increasingly used to accelerate the analysis and characterisation of specimens, most notably in the pharmaceutical industry.

Moving Images Wales 2 (MIW2) Moving Images Wales 2 (MIW2) has the environment, staff and equipment that support research and development partnerships for the creation of intellectual property for Welsh media companies (TV, film and new media) that are located in the Welsh Convergence area.

MIW2 has a range of production and post-production resources that can only be used by media companies for research and IP development purposes. These include a RED One camera and Avid and Final Cut edit suites.

It responds to the changing media landscape, working in TV, film, digital, and cross-platform. Targeting the Welsh, British, European and International market, it responds to the changing media landscape by using new technology to improve audience usage and experience. MIW2 can assist in media proposal development and in R&D activities, such as the creation of Pilots/Tasters (for a future television, feature film, internet concept, cross-platform content, etc). In addition, MIW2 can help forge new R&D networks and advise media companies on a range of activities and processes, such as new digital technologies, the cross-media exploitation of projects and on emerging business models that can target new revenue streams.

Safe Workforce: Sustainable Workplace The Safe Workforce: Sustainable Workplace (SWSW) project helps businesses to improve their health & safety and environmental performance by developing the skills of their managers and staff. There are a range of short courses, each comprising two half-day classroom sessions and an assignment based on the participant’s workplace. The courses have been developed in response to feedback from companies about the current issues they face, including process safety, waste minimisation, workplace stress, and leading in safety. Those completing the course will be ready to implement change in the company’s policies and practices, reducing risks and costs and improving engagement.

Software Alliance Wales (SAW) The project has been designed to help Welsh businesses maximise their potential for exploiting Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and to provide specific support to the software development sector to address skills, competitiveness and key business challenges. Its portfolio of services is designed to increase knowledge and skills through Continuous Professional Development (CPD), IT Company Accreditation (CompTIA), Student Development Projects and ICT workshops for SME business leaders. Software Alliance Wales is a £13.4 million initiative funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government. The project, led by Swansea University, is a collaboration between Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, University of South Wales and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Skills for Industry Is your business located in South West Wales? Are you interested in developing your skills and/or those of your staff? If so, you could benefit from the EU funded Skills for Industry Project. The project aims to upskill the workforce of South West Wales by providing training to the employees of the region. The project will work closely with employers to identify skills needs and develop training programmes that are responsive and flexible. Skills for Industry is delivered by the five further education colleges in South West Wales and aims to improve how the sector work with employers in meeting employers training requirements.

Strategic Insight Programme (SIP) Do you want to develop a strategic relationship with the university? Would you like to be funded up to ÂŁ2500 to spend quality time with a HEI developing ideas for future collaborations? Then the Strategic Insight Programme (SIP) is right for you! SIP builds capacity for Welsh Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to establish strategic links with external organisations, demonstrating the benefits of partnerships with HEIs. The programme facilitates this by providing seed funding for short-term placements aimed at developing new cross-sector relationships, encouraging development of strategically beneficial collaborative projects in a supportive environment. Technocamps Technocamps is a project led by Swansea University in partnership with the Universities of Bangor, Aberystwyth and Glamorgan that provides daily and weekly sessions to young people aged 11-19 on a range of exciting computing-based topics such as programming, robotics, cryptography, animation and much more.

Textiles Technologies Project -2 This project will enable businesses to access the key industry emerging technologies housed within the centre in the Jobswell Campus at Coleg Sir Gar, Carmarthen. The project will be of interest to any business wishing to work on Research and Development, new product development, knowledge transfer, and collaborative projects within the Apparel, Fashion and textiles sector. The main emphasis for this project is the procurement and installation of a jacquard sample loom which will be used to assist companies in the development of woven fabrics in both traditional and technical textile applications. This is an A4B funded project

TILT Training in Languages & Translation (TILT) offers fully funded training to any private business in the convergence area of West Wales and the Valleys. Courses are tailored and flexible and can be delivered either in the workplace or the project will fund finding a suitable local venue. The courses are 20 hours long and can be provided at beginners, intermediate and advance level in Welsh, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Mandarin Chinese. An EU funded project based at Swansea University aiming to make Welsh businesses better able to complete in the global market and get the best out of opportunities in Europe and beyond.

Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating In addition to extensive facilities for commercial & packaging printing WCPC has created a Knowledge Transfer for Functional Materials. With open access facilities supporting the use of printing as a major disruptive technology for efficient, environmentally friendly advanced manufacturing for applications as diverse as automotive, garments, packaging and point of care medical diagnostics. This allows the opportunity for conventional print facilities to move in to new market sectors. Current work on printed electronics and biosensors offers exciting and interesting opportunities for both industry and graduates. This compliments the existing support that the WCPC already offers to companies on areas such as quality and productivity improvements, process mapping and solutions to specific problems.
