The Cade Report John B. Cade Library News

ADVANCING DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP – SU’s Institutional Repository John B. Cade library is home to the SU Digital Repository. It is an institutional repository which is an online platform for collecting, preserving, and disseminating, in digital form, the intellectual output of an institution, particularly an institution that is research intensive. The goal of the repository is to provide open, online access to the University's research and scholarship in an effort to preserve these works for future generations, and to promote a new model of scholarly communication. Published online, the repository is basically accessible to the public. While most academic journal articles are available only to subscribers and not retrievable by general search engines, such as Google, research papers in an institutional repository are fully accessible by the public, free of charge, and are accessible by general search engines. Although this open access platform is a natural fit for libraries, it is also a fundamentally different kind of implementation for libraries because it depends on the faculty for its success.

Some of the benefits of an institutional repository is that it enhances the value of the institution because it preserves a record of the University’s history and research that include not only scholarly articles, but also reports, working papers, data sets, conference proceedings, theses and dissertations, administrative documents, course notes, learning objects and other intellectual outputs. Repositories also enhance the profile of the University and provides the public with an understanding of what the University does. It is also a mechanism for faculty to become known to the research community. When materials are submitted to the repository, faculty members retain the intellectual property rights of their work. The repository will be updated regularly and showcase our professors’ scholarly work,” says Library Dean Dawn Kight. “Our aim is to support, help visualize, and promote faculty research.”

PRESENTING @ THE LOUIS USERS CONFERENCE Held annually since 2003, the LOUIS users conference brings together members to share new developments at their libraries, to share best practices, new technologies or new modes of operation. Library Dean Dawn Kight together with librarians Maya Banks and Eddie Hughes participated in the 2020 LOUIS Users Conference (LUC), held virtually via Zoom. LUC is an annual gathering of library consortium members from throughout the state. The presentation How Far is Your Reach? highlighted the Library’s outreach activities over the last year. Librarians and staff at John B. Cade Library understand that outreach creates positive associations with the library and contributes to the library's support of the University's mission for research, teaching, and learning. Through the library’s programming committee, several events and activities were held so that students will see the library as a partner in their college success and

to remove barriers, so that students feel more comfortable seeking help. “The current COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily changed the way outreach is done, says Library Dean Dawn Kight. “Even though serving the University community looks different during this time, it involves an even greater effort to foster the relationships that have been built with the University community so that users are aware of what the library can offer.”

The current COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way outreach is done, says Library Dean Dawn Kight.

DEAN’S CORNER Greetings As I reflect on the most unusual semester of my career, I am extremely proud of our students, faculty, and staff and all that we have accomplished together. Due to the unusual challenges of teaching and learning in a pandemic environment, service had to go beyond traditional to meet the library needs of students and faculty. We successfully navigated the challenges and changing landscape in a remarkable fashion. Members of the library staff and faculty continued to provide exceptional service to students and to continue their professional development making virtual presentations and providing virtual reference consultations. As we proceed, we will continue to keep the health and safety of our community front and center. We are diligent and mindful of the need to Library Dean Dawn Kight maintain a level of flexibility to respond to members of the University community. This semester has shown how resilient and adaptable that we can be in the face of adversity. Librarians also noticed the increase in students’ technology skills which will be valuable as they enter their professional careers. So, I enter the holiday season grateful. Grateful for what we have accomplished as we worked together. And I must send a sincere thanks to John B. Cade Library faculty and staff for their hard work. Your incredible spirit gives me strength and hope. I wish you, your families, and friends good health and a happy holiday season.

Taking Customer Service to the Next Level

Each month, this section will highlight a John B. Cade Library employee to offer insight into their day-to-day work, hobbies, and more. We have a great staff — but in addition to their day jobs, these employees have a wide array of talents, and interests that make them truly unique. This section introduces our readers to the people who are sometimes behind the scenes making magic happen and we want them to know they are important and appreciated. We salute Dr. Charlotte Henderson, Assistant University Librarian for Collections and Resource Development. She is a member of the Library Dean’s leadership team who is a true team player, and she has an unwavering commitment to excellence in librarianship. (spotlight story page 7)

Increasing efficiency and customer service are a top priority for Library Dean Dawn Kight. In today’s business environment, it is not enough to simply meet our users’ expectations, says Kight. “To truly stand out, we have to be above average.” Public Service Manager Maya Banks conducted a 45-minute virtual session for library staff using Microsoft Teams presenting the basic concepts of customer service and effective customer service techniques and practices. “Good customer service is an opportunity to exceed our users’ expectations,” says Banks. “Of course, in order to exceed user expectations, we must provide employees with the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and skills because providing exceptional customer service is a skill that is learned.” The customer service training aligned employees on how to work together and best represent the library and more importantly the University.

FEAT URE

LOUIS COLLABORATOR: An interview with Dawn Ventress Kight , Southern University Baton Rouge Dean of Libraries Dean of Libraries

Negotiator, Collaborator, Strategic Planner, Storyteller, Vision Sharer, Motivator, Budget Planner, Team Player, Team Leader, Technologist

I saw myself as either a computer analyst in the corporate world or a lawyer. I guess the vision was somewhat accurate since I work in the information and technology field. I just do not make the millions of dollars envisioned when I was 18. I comfort myself by saying I traded dollars for the many college graduate stories where I played a role in their successful paths. My heart is and always was in the industry of service and education. I love libraries and the many ways librarians add value to our communities. I also often feel like a lawyer when pleading the case of more funding for the library.

I believe my greatest professional achievement has been completing technology projects that improved access to information for students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community.

I found humor when a freshman student came to the library while I was working at the reference desk. She asked, in a very polite manner, "Could you please tell me where the library is located?"

She then pointed to a small room asking if that was it. I said, you are in the library. It is this entire building. Her jaws dropped as she was so amazed. Although I smiled inside and outward, I wanted to make sure she felt safe and welcomed. Who or what inspires you? Why? I am often inspired when others reach their goals: buying a house, career success, completing a project or starting a family. When I know the person developed a plan, worked the plan, and achieved success, my faith rises to higher levels and motivates me to do more. How do you motivate or inspire others? I feel actions speak so much louder than words at times. I try to inspire through my deeds and by giving others opportunities and support to be actionable or drivers of their path. This includes understanding that success (however you define it) often comes after what many consider to be failures.

If others described you in one word, how do you think they'd describe you?

What words of wisdom do you have for emerging students or new employees entering the field today?

Fair

Learn about the many opportunities available in the field. Apply for residencies, career development programs, internships and other ventures that will broaden your experiences. Be passionate about what you do, keep an open mind, do your best, and never stop growing and learning.

If you describe yourself in one word, how would you describe you?

Committed Any other random facts or anecdotes you'd like to add? I am a wife, mother of three beautiful girls, and currently pursuing another educational goal. Life is so much better when you appreciate and enjoy it by learning to have peace during the storms and complicated rocky roads.

If you came with a disclaimer, what would it be? Caution: She really bleeds blue and gold (SU school colors)

What do you find most relaxing in your down time? I love to sing and meditate. It takes me to a very peaceful place.

What is your favorite song in your playlist right now? Currently, there is a tie between Hero by Mariah Carey and True Southern Girl by PJ Morton. I love gospel, R&B, zydeco, blues, pop, and various genres of music.

What book are you currently reading? I am reading Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design by Creswell and leisurely reading Dinner for Four by local Baton Rouge author, Lateshia Cameron-Christophe.

Spotlight Dr. Charlotte Henderson As the academic library has evolved from providing the internet as a service to providing services through the internet, the role of the librarian has expanded beyond guarding the silence in a room full of books. Charlotte Henderson has embraced the expanded role of librarians. She feels that libraries provide a portal to the past, while facilitating access to the tools and training needed to explore and solve problems of the future. “A librarian’s role is to share and provide information to all who seek it,” Henderson says. She joined the staff and faculty at John B. Cade Library in 1989 where she has served as head of serials and coordinator of government publications. In her current role as assistant university librarian for collections and resource development, she works closely with academic departments and the library’s budget director and dean to ensure that the library has the resources that the University community needs. She serves as the Library liaison to the education, psychology, speech-language pathology & audiology, and therapeutic recreation programs. She also serves as chair ofCthe University’s Graduate Council. Active in local and national organizations, she is a member of the American Library Association (ALA), the Louisiana Library Association (LLA), the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated., The Links Incorporated; and serves on the Executive Board of the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association. Charlotte enjoys travel and is an avid reader of fiction. Her favorite authors are David Baldacci, Lee Child, Vince Flynn, and John Sandford. Charlotte is the mother of four adult sons and grandmother of six. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, attended Howard University in Washington, DC, and later married physician, Francis Henderson (deceased) and resided in the Washington, DC area until moving to Baton Rouge in 1976.
