HELLO! Christmas happens at the same time every year but we still seem to rush around at the last minute to get ready - at least we do in our house! Winter solstice on the 22nd of December is the shortest day and has been a traditional time for gathering together, feasting and some cultures light fires to celebrate the coming of lighter days. Our charity profile this month is on the Young People’s Shop. Based in Chichester but offering confidential emotional support to young people across West Sussex. With increasing numbers of children refusing to go to school and more young people suffering from anxiety and depression this is a valuable service in need of volunteers, trustees and of course donations.

Painted Lady butterfly
Painted Lady migration patterns and other migratory insects Something to look forward to and appreciate next Spring. Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country. Among these insects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts. The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 50-56mm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. You will see them on your Buddleia or Lavender. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK. These butterflies have average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle!
For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South. These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest ever recorded flight in butterflies. These migrations take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters. How do they know when to start the migration? The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.

Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies are one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for. Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn. Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This could include hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control. “The form of the cross is an octagon, with abutments at each angle, surmounted with pinnacles. An entrance was formerly obtained through each side by means of its pointed arches, adorned with finials and crockets; but the spaces are now palisaded; over four of these arches are tablets, commemorating its reparation in the reign of Charles II.: and three of the latter are again surmounted by as many dials, informing the passenger of the flight of time. In the centre is a large circular column, the basement of which forms a seat: into this column is inserted a number of groinings, which, spreading from the centre, form the roof, beautifully moulded. The central column appears to continue through the roof, and is supported without by eight flying buttresses, which rest on the several corners of the building. According to the inscription upon it, this cross was built by Edward Story, who was translated to this see from that of Carlisle in 1475, and who we are told, left an estate at Amberley, worth full £25 per annum, to keep it in constant repair; but a few years afterwards the mayor and corporation sold it, in order to purchase another nearer home.
The original top of this elegant structure has been removed, to make room for an erection for the bell belonging to the clock; but the general appearance is much hurt by this innovation, and the symmetry destroyed by its very disproportionate size.” *
The alterations mentioned in the above notes, had taken place by way of building the square finial, in a classic style, to hold the clock-bell gifted in 1723, by one Lady Farington. It is probable that the stone used in the original building was from the oolite quarry of Chilmark, Wilts, and that in a restoration done in the time of Charles II a stone that is found near Ventnor was used. This had probably decayed seriously, and the Duke of Richmond's restoration in 1746, was carried out in Portland stone. On special occasions the cross was illuminated, such as for victories at sea, or events connected with the Royal Family. In the golden jubilee year of George III the Cross and Council House were illuminated. Lamps were also provided for the Cross, at the celebration of the overthrow of Bonaparte. In February 1821 the city applied to Parliament for the installation of gas for the purpose of lighting a number of principle streets in Chichester. By March 1823, the city Guardians had agreed on 120 sites for the new gas lamps; 77 of these were on columns and 43 on brackets. The streets decided on for these lamps were South Gate, the Broyle and Somerstown, area, St Pancras, West Gate, the Pallant, St John's Street, Little London, St Martin's Lane, Chapel Street and Tower Street. And so it was, that on the evening of the lighting up of the city, the special occasion attracted the whole population of Chichester and the neighbourhood to witness its effect which was equal to a general illumination in comparison with the former oil lights. One particular Chichester resident, John Marsh commented on the new lighting in October. “This evening (it having been hitherto moonlit nights since I came home), I first saw Chichester lighted with gas, the appearance of which was strikingly brilliant.”+ *Ref: Excursions in the County of Sussex. The money wil l go towards supporting Sussex police to create eight new Victim Co-ordinator roles; provide six licensed Safety Marshals on foot patrol in high visibility uniform; modernise some of the CCTV systems in Sussex. A group of Sussex researchers are partnering with universities and school mental health support teams to pilot a school-based programme to help young people in West Sussex who are hearing voices to access support more quickly. Libraries are getting into the festive spirit and offering visitors a fantastic choice of free Christmas events and activities to enjoy from seasonal rhyme times and story times to special craft activities. Offering confidential support for young people by Lynn Smith Chichester based charity, Young People’s Shop (YPS) offers free and confidential support for young people aged between 11 and 25 years, who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. The charity’s aim is to ensure that every young person in the west of West Sussex can access the help and advice they need. Cathy Burnard, CEO of YPS, tells me that there is a mental health crisis amongst young people, with the charity seeing rising rates of school refusers and young people suffering from anxiety, depression and self-harm. The factors behind this surge are not surprising, a significant influence has been the pandemic which introduced unprecedented uncertainty, fear and social isolation. At the same time, global economic instability and job losses have intensified stress and anxiety for many. Cathy goes onto explain that the widespread use of digital technology and social media has exposed people to a constant stream of alarming news and comparison-driven content that also feeds anxiety. “This is a critical time when a young person has taken the first steps to ask for help. Soaring numbers of under-18 sought NHS care for mental health problems in 2022, but according to Public Health England, only a quarter of those who need help get it.” She quotes the NSPCC, "There has been a 33 percent rise in referrals to specialist services for UK pupils needing mental health treatment."
“More and more young people who are struggling come into YPS.” “Many young people who access our services are experiencing problems with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. This may manifest itself as depression, anxiety, anger, low selfesteem, vulnerability, isolation, self-harm, or through an eating disorder. They may be in abusive relationships (neglect from parents, siblings, partners, or bullying at school). We take many referrals from Statutory Services, including GPs and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) who acknowledge that the young person's mental health is significant enough to warrant further intervention and support from our services.”
Providing a variety of services to help young people with their needs. Services provided by YPS include - emotional support sessions, provided online, in person or by telephone. These are open-ended, meaning that there is no limit to the number of sessions a user can have. YPS also offers a free counselling service with a team of qualified and student counsellors trained and supervised to offer the best support possible. Again, users can access counselling in person, online, or by telephone. Additionally, the charity operates a drop-in service providing information and advice on any issues young people may face and can also signpost users to other specialist services. Outreach services take YPS into events, schools, colleges and universities in the community and the charity also runs workshops on topics such as selfesteem, anxiety, mindfulness, employment skills, self-care, and wellbeing. However, Cathy explains that YPS is a holistic service that doesn’t just focus on mental health. “We offer activities to support physical health and others to support creativity. Yoga, noncontact boxing, skateboarding, arts and crafts, Bushcraft, and sailing are just some activities we offer throughout the year.” Accessing the services of YPS YPS prides itself on being an accessible service for young people and young people can refer themselves to the charity, be referred by statutory bodies, GPs or through school contact. Cathy tells me that YPS has been supporting young people since 1998, when West Sussex

Council set up “Information Shops for Young People,” of which there were seven across the county, each overseen by a management committee. “The project began as part of the National Youth Agency’s initiative to provide free and confidential information, advice, support, and counselling services for young people on all matters that had importance and meaning in their lives. In December 2009, a policy change by West Sussex Youth Service dictated the closure of the Shop, in favour of merging its advice and support elements with the Connexions/Careers service. However, members of the Management Committee were passionate about preserving the project’s highly valued counselling service. They decided to maintain governance of the counselling as a separate entity, and to retain the name ‘Chichester Information Shop for Young People.’ “ With no statutory funding or premises, it was a challenge for the committee. Still the Boys’ Club in Little London supported their endeavours and identified a space in their building, which became the project’s new counselling hub. In 2012 the Shop gained charitable status and moved into a larger space in the Boys’ Club building,
enabling the project to offer drop-in information, advice and support in addition to the existing counselling service. In 2021, the charity moves to premises in South Street, Chichester and, “In October 2022, we re-branded and changed our name to the Young People's Shop.” Since 1998, YPS has been making a positive difference to the lives of the young people it supports. “The number has significantly increased over the last few years. In 2022, we had over 2,500 contacts with young people for counselling and emotional support, with an average

These numbers continue to grow.” “Outcomes of the young people we support …” When I ask what degree of success the charity has, and how that success is defined, Cathy provides some of the outcomes experienced by the young people YPS supports, including improved self-esteem, confidence and happiness, and learning self-management techniques to help with stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. She tells me that progress and outcomes are measured through feedback forms. Current results indicate that after visiting YPS, 72 percent said their self-esteem improved, 76 percent felt more confident, 62 percent said anxiety levels had improved, 49 percent said their relationships and socialising had improved and 66 percent said they wanted to make positive life changes following YPS support. An independent charity, working hard to raise voluntary funding YPS is funded from applications to local community and national funders such as the National Lottery Community Fund and BBC Children in Need. The charity currently has 47 staff
members, including seven paid staff, contracted staff, volunteers and trustees. The charity is, Cathy says, “Always looking for volunteers and trustees to enrich our service to young people. For people interested in volunteering, please don't hesitate to contact YPS, outlining why you would like to volunteer for us and how you can help us support young people. “The last two years have been a difficult time for the charity sector. The current economic climate poses significant challenges for organisations reliant on charitable donations. Economic downturns frequently lead to higher demand for the services provided by charities, especially those supporting vulnerable populations like young people. Homemade eggnog A traditional Christmas drink Ingredients • 6 egg yolks • 150g local honey • 500ml whole milk • 230g double cream • 1 tsp ‘Carlas Seasoning’ sweet spice blend, plus extra for topping • A pinch salt • ¼ tsp vanilla extract • 100ml Sussex spirit brandy • To serve, whipped cream Method 1. Whisk the egg yolks and honey together in a medium bowl until light and creamy. 2. In a saucepan over a medium to high heat combine the milk, cream, spice blend and salt, stir regularly until the mixture just reaches a light simmer. 3. Add a ladle of the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously. Repeat ladle by ladle to temper the eggs. By doing this gradually will mean the eggs should not scramble.
4. Once most of the hot mixture has been used pour the mixture back into the saucepan over a low heat. 5. Whisk constantly for just a few minutes, until the mixture has just slightly thickened. 6. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and Sussex brandy. 7. Pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a jug and cover with cling film. 8. Refrigerate until chilled. It will thicken further as it cools, if you prefer a smoother consistency, you can blend the mixture before serving with a couple tablespoons of milk. 9. Let good enough be good enough! By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Do you feel like you’re either ‘being good’ or ‘eating badly’ with very little in between? Please take this as your annual reminder that sometimes good enough is, well, good enough! Many people feel a sense of dread when they think about the food and drink around at Christmas. I think this is a real shame, and I’d really like to help you avoid that feeling this year. I’d like you to remember that we eat for lots of reasons which aren’t nutrition. Food is also a way to celebrate, a way to join together with our friends and family. Food can bring back memories and help create new ones. And so, the idea that veggies are good and mince pies are bad means that we are ignoring many of the reasons we eat. ‘Eating well’ to ‘eating badly’ is a spectrum, and you’re not always at one end or the other. It is quite reasonable to find a balance between the food and drink you want to enjoy, and the food and drink which is supportive to your health
goals. This is most clear-cut at Christmas, but it is true for the rest of the year as well. Sometimes, you’ll be focussing harder on your health goals, and sometimes you’ll be focussing more on the non-nutrition reasons we eat. So, choose a few things you can do over Christmas which are aligned with your overall goal, and choose a few things which allow you to enjoy the non-nutritional reasons for eating. Easebourne C of E Primary School Pallant House gallery, Sustainability Centre & grandparents Reflecting on another eventful term here at Easebourne CE Primary School, as always, our students have been busy engaging in a wide range of activities, and I am delighted to share some highlights with you. One such highlight was the recent visit by our Year 2 students to the Pallant House Gallery. Inspired by the incredible artwork they saw, our young artists have been hard at work creating their own masterpieces. Our Year 5 pupils had the wonderful opportunity to embark on a residential trip to the Sustainability Centre. This immersive experience allowed them to deepen their understanding of Year 5 - Sustainability Centre sustainability and develop a deeper appreciation for our environment. The children returned with newfound
knowledge and a renewed sense of responsibility towards our environment. Furthermore, our Year 1 children had the pleasure of welcoming their grandparents for a delightful afternoon of tea and biscuits. This special occasion allowed our children to learn about their grandparents' childhoods and forge meaningful connections across generations. It was heart-warming to witness the joy and laughter shared during this event. As the term drew to a close, we came together as a school community to celebrate our annual Harvest festival at St Mary's Church. It was a time to express gratitude and appreciation for the bountiful harvest we have received. I am thrilled that the generous donations amounted to enough to provide 255 meals for the Chichester foodbank. Midhurst C E Primary School Off to a Flying Start Two MPS football teams went to MRC for the Rother Valley tournament. MPS 1st team managed to win the entire tournament through skill, teamwork and bravery! We played three teams in the group stages, winning the first two 1-0 thanks to goals from Sylvester and Mylo. Our last game against Easebourne ended 1-1 so we had to play a dramatic golden goal game. It took a WONDER GOAL from Apollo to put us through. We then defeated the previous Stedham tournament winners 1-0 courtesy of a fabulous Sylvester goal. This put us through to the final against Easebourne - a local derby! As we approached the final minutes, it looked like a penalty shootout was looming. However, Mylo coolly finished in the last minute – ensuring the shield was coming back to MPS! An amazing effort from the whole team. Edward in goal was solid and reliable. Fantastic defence from Sunny. Plus, amazing wing play from the speedy Lacey and Libby. Upfront, Mylo worked
hard and scored two calm finishes. A big shout out to Jayden and Nadia too. In the picture are our development team of Year 5s, captained by Sienna. A big well done to them too.

Midhurst Rother College Trip to San Francisco - by MRC Sixth form student San Francisco was an incredible once in a lifetime opportunity that I will remember for the rest of my life. From the guided tour around Alcatraz to the computer science museum in San Jose, the Silicon Valley visits to Apple and Google and the Intel Museum there was no time without constant action. We stayed in a hostel that looked out at the Golden Gate Bridge and had a wonderful view of Alcatraz on the walk from the hostel to coastal San Francisco.
The trip was incredibly jam packed, even going to an ice hockey game straight after landing in San Francisco! (this ended up being a 31-hour day). The trip as a whole was incredibly eye opening to life in America and the different career paths that the computer science can take you down. We managed to squeeze a lot into a 5-day trip! www.mrc-academy.org

We spent an inspiring time looking around Stanford University, seeing where all the great computer scientists of San Francisco studied with a small detour to the actual garage that Hewlett Packard was started from.

Chichester City Council Pavement Repairs, Chamber of Culture Edited extracts from minutes of City Council Meeting 27th September 2023.
Pavement Repairs Among the issues discussed were the lack of progress on city centre pavement repairs. A councillor provided a District Council update including work on the Local Plan, plans to improve the nighttime economy, and environmental initiatives with local businesses. Path Completion A member gave a County Council update including completion of the path between Story Road and Lidl and changes to the controlled parking zone. External Audit The external audit for 2022-2023 was noted as concluded. A working group was established to review committee terms of reference and the scheme of delegation. The membership of outside bodies together with annual subscriptions was approved.
Draft Business Plan Authority was delegated to the Finance Committee to approve a draft business plan for public consultation. A councillor summarised parking changes from the Joint Parking Committee. Whitehouse Farm A councillor provided a ward update including traveller incursions, mitigation works for the Whitehouse Farm development, and cycling infrastructure plans. Chamber of Culture The mayor proposed the creation of a “Chamber of Culture” as well as discussions with the Cathedral, Chichester Festival Theatre and Pallant House Gallery about establishing an arts development group. Following a debate regarding whether other organisations should be included within the donations list, it was proposed to add The British Legion Poppy Appeal to the list. The Midhurst Tourism’s allocation will be put on hold, pending receipt of their form. The following donations were agreed:
It was agreed that two trees that had died by the Fire Station died will be replaced. One of these will be planted in memory of a highly-valued and committed member of Midhurst Green Volunteers. The Green Volunteers were also raising funds for the tree/s.

The Council received a request from Baiersbronn to include a garden dedicated to Midhurst within their 2025 Garden Show. The Chairman also reported that a request has been received from Lassay-les-Chateaux, for Midhurst to consider a twinning arrangement. Following a short debate, it was agreed to discuss the invitations with residents currently involved with twinning, and include this item on the next Council meeting agenda.
